Wow, what a day! Everyone has been talking about the Sony press conference hosted by Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA, and with so many announcements, I’ll stop using up space with this introductory paragraph and dive straight in.
The PSPgo was officially unveiled on-stage by Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. CEO, Kaz Hirai. It’s 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the PSP-1000 and with 16 GB internal flash memory, it’s designed for those who like their digital media “to go”, as they say over here. It will be released on October 1, 2009.

Complementing this new evolution of PSP is a host of fantastic games coming to both UMD and PlayStation Store. Kazanouri Yamauchi, the mastermind behind Gran Turismo, arrived to show GT PSP, which will feature 800 cars, 35 tracks and will run at 60 FPS. He was followed by another legendary Japanese developer, Hideo Kojima, for the reveal of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, a brand new mission for Solid Snake, only on PSP, which takes place during the 1970s.
Completing the portable line-up were a brand new Resident Evil title; Buzz! Quiz World, which will also be on PLAYSTATION 3; and the news that Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines features interoperability with Assassin’s Creed 2 on PS3. And to make sure we see plenty more stellar titles for PSP in the future, Jack Tretton announced that the price of PSP development tools will be cut by 80%, expanding the opportunity for developers to create content for PSP.
Moving onto the PS3, Richard Marks of SCE research and development showed us a new motion sensing controller that works with PlayStation Eye to enable 1:1 movement response. The crowd was impressed by tech demos that allowed him to play sports, wield a giant sword and shield, aim guns and even write with astonishing precision. He spoke of “sub-millimetre accuracy,” which I like to think of as a metric shout-out to us Europeans.
There were absolutely loads of PS3 games on show, including a live demo of the opening scenes to God of War III; a gorgeous video of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves gameplay that climaxed with Drake taking on a helicopter; the trailer for Team ICO’s latest creation, The Last Guardian; a look at ModNation, which applies LittleBigPlanet’s mantra of play, create, share to the kart racing genre, allowing players to build playable tracks in a matter of seconds; Agent, a new exclusive title from Rockstar North; the surprise announcement that Final Fantasy XIV is coming next year, exclusively to PS3; and the first trailer for Gran Turismo 5.
The strength of this E3 line-up was best summed up when Tretton proudly announced that 364 games are coming out on PlayStation platforms in the next year. That and the number of semi-colons in the above paragraph.
So there you have it, which bit was best for you? I’m off to see what the rest of the SCEE guys are up to, although the words lying and down were being used quite a bit earlier.

Very excited about Uncharted 2, God of War III and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Also cautiously excited about Agent, since it’s from Rockstar North, which have an amazing track record when it comes to games.

I was very pleased with the show, lots of great things coming and it was nice to see the people poking fun at themselfs (like all the leak jibes) and not taking things so seriously.
Highlights.
.
Seeing God of war 3, it looked EPIC.
Modnation Racers, all i can say is WOW, i’m so looking forward to making my fav mario tracks
MAG, looks so good, i want it NOW!.
Unchated 2, DAM!!! it looked sweet.
Lowlights.
GT5, was disapointed with the lack of info, GT mobile october 09, Forza 3 october 09, yet still no GT5 release date!.
Agent, very interested in it and was so disapointed nothing was shown about it.
All in all a good show and i sure as hell won’t be getting rid of my PS3 anytime soon (and i’ll be sure to have a PSP by october
)

We need a release date for GT5. I’ve seen a 2009 interview with PD’s lead where he states that it isn’t pinned down yet.
Biggest letdown of the show.
Also, what’s going to happen with the firmware for ps3? What are the new features going to be, if any, soon?

I loved the look of the PSP Go!. Day one purchase. I still love that some people are comparing Sonys motion control to the Wii. Its uses infrared. Sonys is based on mo-cap technology. It is Lightyears ahead. My highlight though was modnation Racers.

I’ve already started saving for a PSP Go.
Play.com have it for preorder at £249.99, hopefully that won’t be the final price as for another £40 you can buy a PS3….

Sony had the best E3 in years some of the best things were:
Motion controllers (much better than Project Natal)
Uncharted 2 gameplay (completely blew me away)
PSP Go official announcement (was a bit underwhelming due to the leaks)
ModNation Racers (brilliant idea to merge LBP and Mariokart)
Final Fantasy 14 announcement (13 hasn’t even come out yet and Square are looking to the future)

After two years and big spending on the Microsoftsite, 2 years of Microsoft owning, Sony beating Microsoft big time. Sony you owned this e3, why? Exl games games games en more games and that is why i own a PS3 not for twitters and kind of crap.
Sony dit the wright thing…let the games speak for themselfs, and what a beautiful line-up the PS3 has…better than the 360 a blind man can see that….
E3 2009? SONY OWNAGE

The Sony’s motion sensing seemed like an interesting concept, but as with the Natal, they’re both in early stages. I doubt we’ll be seeing either of them until 2010. Personally, the Natal looked more interesting for me, but I’ll most likely be picking up both so long as they don’t look like the tutti-frutti sticks they look like now.
One question: Microsoft mentioned they were sending out dev. packs to developers within the month, what are Sony doing about this? Presumably they won’t leave it to the last moment and send them out about a month before it’s due to be released… Will they?

Could Sony not have lowered the price of the PSP DevKits a bit more so that even individuals could write some simple games for it? A sort of ‘blessed’ homebrew portfolio wouldn’t hurt!
Then, Sony could make up a section on PSN specifically for such apps/games and PSP owners can download/buy such software for free/at a cheap price…A bit like the Apple iTunes store thing for the iPhone. I’d settle for a Tube map app right now!!
It would propel the PSP into the social phenomenon that it deserves to be and even give the iPhone a run for its money (games/apps-wise, anyway) and make it (I’m sure) overtake the Nintendo DS.
Doesn’t Sony remember that the original success of the PS1 was because they aimed it at hardcore gamers with a youth culture theme?
Surely if the youth of today could put their fave stuff on it, then it would be more trendy for them to own one and to be swapping demos, downloaded ‘free’ games and other appropriate apps!
Wouldn’t that be great?!

Doesn’t really effect me but I know a lot of people are wondering about the PSP Go.
Will there be a way to get your UMD games on to the PSP Go through some kind of download?
I doubt it but I know a lot of people who want one but will pass if they have to give up their games

Does anybody know if there is any planes for making a Remote Play app for the iPhone, so you can stream musik to your iPhone insted of having to carry two devises around eg. PSP and Phone.
As it is now i really dont use the Remote feature mainly because i dont want to carry two devises around all the time.
So if Sony made a Remote Play App for the iPhone/phones i think that the feature would be a much more used feature on the PS3.
So is there any planes for this…?

Things to do to succeed with the PSP Go and to compete with PSN and PSN video store.
1) Let people with UMDs send them in to an exchange program to receive serial for a digital copy. For extra goodwill send them back their UMDs too.
2) Let people download unlimited copies of the software content (videos, games) they own like on Steam and iTunes. This guarantees a better adoption rate. I am an avid Steam consumer and I couln’t see myself buying content in any other way.
3) Deliver a syncable platform solution for Mac, PC, PSP, PS3, Cell phones(and perhaps other portable and not so portable units) with the Media Go. Support conversion for ALL popular softwares like FLAC, Apple Lossless, DivX, Xvid and different HD-formats. Also build a strong podcast platform that can rival iTune’s. Let users backup the games they don’t want to have on their PSP by unchecking them in Media Go. This way they don’t have to redownload them from PSN everytime they want to switch games on their PSP.

4)Introduce a fully functional PSN Store with a video store for ALL regions and make it possible for early adopters to buy content from other regions. Delivers 1080P content streamable. Start selling music and let consumers download music in differen qualities FLAC, 320 kbps, 192 kpbs and so on. Support unlimited downloads to purhased content here also!
5) Create a nice virtual media shelf viewer so that consumers can se ALL the content they have bought from PSN and PSN video store. In this way it can stimulate the collector in certain consumers to sort all their content nicely. Support different filters to the shelf like “Purshased Games”, “Free Videos”, “Demos”,”Addons” and so on.
