As they’ve already released two Resistance games and are working on their third Ratchet and Clank title on PS3, I can see where Insomniac Games gets its name. At E3 last week, I sat down with Bryan Bernal, Project Manager of Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time to take a look at the latest instalment in one of my favourite series (just look at my avatar).
The demo started in a massive new area – the biggest ever seen in a R&C game – where Ratchet is fighting alongside General Azimuth. I got to see a hilarious new weapon called the Sonic Eruptor, which is a giant, belching frog on the end of a gun. There is a constant animation of it breathing in and out and if you fire when it’s at its fullest, you get a more vociferous burp resulting in more damage. The graphics are sumptuous and represent yet another leap forward for the series.
“Technology wise, we’re building on Resistance 2,” explains Bernal, “so we have soft shadowing; our own water technology, which just went open source so other developers can use it in their projects; and the biggest, most open environments we have ever built.”
“In order to get around, we’ve given Ratchet a pair of hover boots that let you zoom across the levels and do some acrobatic stuff like going off ramps. They also open up some great new platforming possibilities.”
We then see another new weapon, the Cryomine Glove, which lets you temporarily freeze enmies. Bernal blasted a huge mounted rider and then used a crossbow called the Plasma Striker, which also reveals each baddies’ weak point, to finish him off.
My favourite part of the demonstration was when we moved to a level from later in the game and were controlling Clank as he faced a puzzle which makes use of the game’s new time mechanics. In front of us was the familiar set-up of two floor switches and a closed door, and there are no prizes (I sold them) for guessing that you need to somehow stand on the two switches to open the door.
The way around it is to use the three Time Record Pads in the centre of the room. When you stand on one you are able to start a recording, lasting up to a minute, of your movements. When you stand on a second pad and start recording, your first Clank jumps to life and also interacts with the environment. So, (can you guess what it is yet?) you can create two recordings and sync their movements to stand on the switches together, while the third you runs through the open door.
I won’t even try and explain the other two puzzles of this kind shown to me as I was scratching my head after a few steps, but they involve up to five Time Record Pads, multiple doors and elevators (lifts, to you and me). It kind of reminded me of Portal; the gameplay mechanic is completely different but the thought processes required seemed similar.
“There are going to be a lot of these puzzles,” Bernal said, “and we’re trying to appeal to the hardcore audience as well as the more casual. They’re also optional and will unlock new areas and rewards, so we’re able to have some really challenging levels for those who want them without putting off anyone who struggles with them. We love this kind of cerebral gameplay so we’re really happy to have this in the new Ratchet and Clank.”
What was interesting for me at E3, as I was playing so many games each day, was seeing which ones I found myself thinking about in the car on the way back to the hotel. On the first day it was EyePet with the odd glimpse of that helicopter fight from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (and my inability to know the difference between Chloe and Elena!) After the second day, it was the time gameplay in Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time.
Actually, there are so many things I could talk about from Bryan’s great presentation, but I don’t want to keep you scrolling here all day, so if you have any questions, let me know in the comments or check out Jeff’s walkthrough video from PlayStation.Blog.US.

Nice update just watched the video on the PS blog. Really love Rachet. This is why I play videogames and sometimes the industry forgets that games should be fun in the first place and add all the extra layers after that.
Awesome job IG and PS blog

From meeting a few of the guys now, the Insomniac Games studio seems a cool, fun place to work, and it think it comes through in their titles.

Great articles on this new blog guys. Something to read each day and a real personal touch to the news.
R&C is one of the best IP’s on the PS3, me and the misses cant wait for later this year its a game we both love playing!

Thanks for the big-up. I think those puzzle levels (I’m still thinking about them!) will be great to play with someone else in the room, although they could start arguments… ever seen the Simpsons episode where they all try to do a Rubix’s Cube?

What Insomniac Games is doing for the PS3 is unheard of…and that is why i like Insomniac Games so munch. They are pulling the car for the PS3 with high quality games, and the fourth one in the livecycle of the baby what the PS3 is at this moment, is awsome, and nothing less.
I love all the first party devs of Sony, they are making the differens this livecycle of the PS3 and believe me whe still havn’t seen the last of them yet……

They’re a talented bunch, for sure. And, I’m pleased to say, they’re nice guys too!

Not that I know of. I asked Bryan if he had any plans for multiplayer and he said that ‘their focus is on bringing an awesome single-player experience.’

Those time puzzle things sound awesome. So you do something, then go back in time and watch yourself doing it, whilst being able to do things as well and work together with your past self? I can’t wait!!!
Posted on 9 June, 2009 at 5:27 pm by James Gallagher
That just about sums it up, but with one correction: *past-selves* – I saw one level with five Time Pads and five little Clanks all running around.

Looks great, always been a big fan of the R&C series and RFOM, R2.
This will be another purchase.
I just wish they’d release a trophy update for 2 R&C games already on the PS3.

Cool, I just bought Tools of Destruction and Quest for Booty!
Hopefully there will be a trophy for max leveling (and upgrading) all your weapons. I love leveling up my weapons, so well, I don’t even need a trophy for it… would be nice though
And yeah, coop would be nice so I could play with my brother. Now it’s like “You failed, my turn.” xD

Fantastic! I love these types of puzzles! It’s great to hear that ACiT will include them. I really feel that there is a severe lack of enviromental puzzles in games these days, but were quite prevalent in the PS2 era. Most games these days add things like the pipe puzzles in BioShock, instead of these enviromental puzzles I love so well.
I have every Insomniac game since the original Spyro the Dragon, and I don’t intend to stop now! Every year, these guys blow my mind! How these guys can keep making a quality new game every year baffles me!
Posted on 9 June, 2009 at 7:02 pm by James Gallagher
I love them too and it seems like some developers abandon them for more action-heavy gameplay, so it’s great to see Insomniac sticking to its guns… or not, rather, at least not all of the time.

Btw James can you go and talk to the media molecule guys about future DLC for Little Big planet?
And the evolution and wipeout guys about their next games as well? Thx.

Check out Tony Buckley’s post about the new WipEout DLC from June 1.

Resistance 2 was “good” but it didnt have the flare and intensity that Resistance 1 had….it was too colourful…too clean..I missed the vehicle sections and I believe the enemies actually looked and felt more real and powerful in the first game.
Not saying I didnt enjoy R2…just that it was a diluted experience.
Retribution however was alot of fun!

Insomniac do some great games, the danger here is it will get too frustrating especially with a 1 minute limit if you make a mistake with your 4th recording and the rest was perfect on a hard level, doing it all again could grind on peoples nerves. Insomniac are usually smart enough to see thing like this though and put in mechanics that work… here’s hoping!
Posted on 9 June, 2009 at 7:04 pm by James Gallagher
If I remember correctly, each Time Pad acts independently and its associated recording doesn’t reset until you go back to it and re-record that particular ‘track’.

Yeah i thought RFOM 1 was better than R2, at least as a single player.
Not much for online shooters, but R2 had loads of decent options if you were.

That time mechanics stuff reminds me exactly of an online flash game called Chronotron. It even uses a little robot just like clank

May be an obvious question, but is this a full title. I mean is it a full retail release?
Posted on 9 June, 2009 at 8:09 pm by James Gallagher
Yes, it’s coming out on Blu-ray Disc and won’t be a shorter title like Quest for Booty.

Next time please post SPOILER ALERT when you give such…
I just have one request: I want a Ratchet (and Clank) plush toy! That would be the first Collector’s Edition game I’ve ever bought. And I’m 34 and male.
Can’t wait for this, Ratchet&Clank was the first game I played on PS3, and I loved it!

R1 > R2 but R+C = WIN

Oh, and agree completely: games should be fun. As much as I enjoy Killzone 2 and Deadspace, if I see yet another dystopian monochromatic future I’m gonna scream. Give me disco-dancing aliens any day over that!
I don’t know why there’s a notion that hardcore and mature games must be about bleak surroundings, killing, dying and violence. Again, that’s fine, but maturity is more than that. I’ve been a hardcore gamer since LANing Wolfenstein 3D, and am almost as mature as my age suggests. I enjoy melting faces with fireballs, but I also laugh out loud when Clank gets taken out by a giant hammer from the dashboard.
So thank you for bringing us another mature, hardcore(ish) game which is fun and dares to be different!

Great post James, it did a great job off explaining some of new gameplay. I’m really liking what Insomniac are doing with A Crack in Time, the new puzzles sound very good, and the changes to the game design with the more open levels, and the slight change in art design look great.

Yeah, Collector’s Edition would be neat.
And I have to say that Clock Blockers would have been a great name

Thanks James. I have to say from the footage I’ve seen, the game looks absolutely beautiful like the first future title. I particularly love the explosions, which have a gorgeous cartoon appearance to them. I think even with my finances, I’ll be struggling not to buy this title. Can’t wait. Co-op would be fantastic though

R&C looks badass as always
Here’s hoping for a demo not too far away
RANDOM QUESTION:
Any word on some new Avatars for PSN?
I’ve drained all the half decent ones, I’m ignoring the frankly crap mushrooms and “cool” skateboarding ones and I’m hoping for SOMETHING MGS related in the future (The lack of which is criminal)

This looks brilliant, that Sonic Eruptor weapon had me in stitches. The hover boots seem to add something new to the game too, can’t wait to get my hands on it. Great article.
