Hey! My name is Ben and I’m the Head of Production at VidZone. We are all incredibly excited to launch our new on-demand music video streaming service free on PS3 and PSP (via Remote Play) today at 4pm in Europe; that’s 3pm for blog readers in the UK.
VidZone will be available for free download from PlayStation Store in UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Australia. As well as having access to 1000s of music videos which you can watch whenever you want and fast forward/rewind/pause, and create playlists, I am happy to let you know of some great exclusives for launch in my first post here on SCEE’s PlayStation.Blog.
Ahead of E3 we interviewed ultra cool band, Kasabian and got exclusive access behind the scenes of their new video “Where Did All The Love Go”.
Kasabian on VidZone
Not only do we have exclusive behind the scenes footage, but for launch we are showcasing a WORLD exclusive live version of their Processed Beats video. You will only see the full videos on VidZone.
Oh, and for all who suspect we will be catering for just you pop loving people only… think again! VidZone is launching with over 10,000 music videos, 4,000 artists, 2 Major and thousands of Independent labels, across 12 main genres. You will find all your favourite acts including Metallica, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, System Of A Down, Oasis, The Killers, Kings of Leon, 50 cent, Eminem, Kanye, Jay-Z, Aphex Twin, Rage Against The Machine and Pearl Jam as well as Lady GaGa, Britney, Beyonce, Leona Lewis, Sneaky Sound System, Jamiroquai, Justin Timberlake…and tonnes of dance acts from Ministry of Sound and other huge global stars like Tiesto, Fatboy Slim, Maura Picotto, Eric Prydz, Armand van Helden, Basshunter, Freemasons and more! We will be adding loads of videos all the time so if you can’t find your favourite video to start with it shouldn’t be long for us to get it so keep checking back and you may be pleasantly surprised.
Watch this space for info on video updates and all other aspects of the service. We have some very exciting things planned over the coming weeks and months which you will definitely want to hear about.
Ben

Is this coming to Finland? It is so unfair that this comes only some countries and so many doesn’t have it:(

In some cases you have alternative versions of music videos, i.e. a Director’s Cut version of Natasha Bedingfield’s These Words and the US Version of Unwritten by the same artist. In these instances, are there any future plans to make the original versions available?

While I appreciate the continued development of PSN services it’s a bit frustrating not being part of the few countries that vidzone is getting launched in.
You could at least come up with an official statement regarding estimated release of this to the rest of the EU community.

Do not be surprised if you do not get wogole vidZone .. But if you wait to the perhaps as many as some pieces of the Polish singstar

But it was known from the beginning … Okay, we all had hopes that, however, can and Poland will be able to use VidZone …
The most surprised me the fact that 50 European countries (including those without access to the PSS), only 6 (do not take into account Australia, but repeat it again six) of them can use this service … Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? I think here should be a great applause for SCEE

Really fed hopes that, as PSS, so VZ service will be available in Poland, except that in English.
Really thanks, I am grateful and obliged dozgonnie with Sony in August as head interferes, klonuje and has so many important things on my head just so they forget about us.
Sony once again showed what about us (Poles) thoughts …

“VidZone will be available for free download from PlayStation Store in UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Australia.”
WHY ONLY THOSE COUNTRIES ?
it’s a shame for all people who live in EUROPE and can’t access Vidzone.. are we just useless ?

I think VidZone is great so far from the brief amount of time I’ve used it. The music catalogue seems to be good but hopefully it will be updated frequently as well as expanded to more categories, especially in the Rock/Metal genres and less mainstream genres as well.
The interface of the application is pretty slick, however browsing between the featured categories is very slow due to updating the featured tracks everytime I try to navigate to different category. I think this needs to improved. I suggest not showing the featured tracks list until the user ‘selects’ the desired category. I also found the menus a bit confusing but may be I just need to use it more.
Overall I’m happy. The banner ad at the bottom of the video can be a little intrusive but as long as the service stays free, is improved/updated regularly and we don’t get more ads thrown in our face, I will continue to use VidZone. However, the moment I see those annoying 30-second ads between videos I’m uninstalling this service straight away.

There needs to be an option to choose whether or not you want your music censored. I’m an adult, as are the majority of PS3 owners. Isn’t it the parents responsibility – not SONY’S to decide what is and isn’t suitable?
I’m getting extremely frustrated than the default/mandatory setting for everything SONY/PS3 is censor, censor, censor! It is insulting and totally unnecessary.
It isn’t SONY’S responsibility. I’m a big boy, stop treating me like I’m eleven years old. Grrrrrrr!

Having experienced it on Thursday it worked very well. Only thing is, full screen mode on a 40″ Sony LCD doesn’t look very sharp sound on most videos is very good I must say

Absolutely brilliant. Not sure about the Barry Manilow singing Rick Astley!!!!!
Anyhow can we have some :
Theory of a Deadman (understandably would have to be radio edits though!!)
Rascal Flatts (I mean, if you’ve got Lonestar on there!!!!)
Chilli Peppers
Blue Man Group (a strange one I know but hey!!!)
Cher (for the missus)
The only real niggle I have is when you search by Artist and you go into the songs they have, to come back out you press ‘O’ but this takes you to the start of the alphabetical list. Can it be changed to go back to where you were up to. If you were up to Aswad you would then be thrown back to the beginning and its a hell of a slow scroll.
Apart from that
FANTASTIC.

Hello,
while I understand there might be lots of tech reasons for not being able to go live in the whole Europe (number of online servers vs. QoS) I am still disappointed for the following reasons:
- As reported by many bloggers you advertised the launch of Vidzone as Europe-wide: this is obviously not the case
- Even if I have a Swiss PSN account, I still received a happy email rushing me to go to PS-Store and download Vidzone: can u imagine how frustrating I was when I didn’t find anything there?
- Finally, SONY has a controversial policy about users’ rights, DVD region coding, IP-based content blocking, 10Gb limit for Other OS installation and so on. Therefore each time something like this happens I cannot avoid thinking it is somehow related to some kind of paranoid policy about how I can use my PS3 and what I am allowed to play on it.
Best Regards.

First of i would love to try the VidZone app. But i live in Denmark, so i just have to wait.
But on the other hand, then the big countrys are gonna be the Beta testers of VidZone here in EU and i for one will not miss the frustrations of a app that dossent work proberly/has some bugs, so just sort out the bugs for the rest of us and release it as soon as you guys can.

First off, great job! For launch, you seem to have it working pretty well. It’s actually got my Dad of all people attach to my PS3!
Few things though…(I’m sure it’s probably already been mentioned in the twelve pages)
*Artist search is broken
*It needs a better search input. It can take a while to search for something when if you stop at ‘A’, it has to load all the results before you can change the letter again.
*Although you already have a huge section of music, I can’t wait until you get even more labels on board!
*Adding a feature similar to Apple’s ‘Genius’ would be nice!
Keep up the good work you’ve already started so far though!

well done to everyone who worked on bringing vidzone to the ps3.i find the user interface fairly easy to navigate.however i think the way you need to input txt into the search feature can be a bit anoying at times when it searches for something when your just trying to type in a name. cant we just have a pop up keyboard in the same way you send a message on psn?.
also is there any way to view the vids full screen on a large screen hdtv?
these are just minor things and doesnt detract from vidzone being a great free service on ps3.
heres a couple of artists/songs that i hope you could add at some point in future
bob marley(redemption songs)
bob dylan(hurricane)
john lennon(imagine)
lynard skynard(free bird ftw)

Can someone tell me how to enter a * in the search field
For example Nsync is shown as *Nsync but there is no way to enter the star, also just typing Nsync will not find any videos, currently I have to find via Video name then find all associated videos which is a pain.

This is so good. Had it on for most of yesterday afternoon with mine and my girlfriend’s playlists on together playing on shuffle. Only had a couple of buffers all day. Really great feature.

What I would like to see, beside a better search function, is the possibility to uncheck a song. E.g. when I “x” a song it´s marked for playlist, now when I “x” again it should get unmarked. Sometimes I just want to pre-listen and song and thereafter I have to remove it from my current playlist.
As earlier mentioned, as you go back a folder in search mode, you should get back to the point in the list, where you allready scrolled to.
But nevertheless a nice service, allmost better than the shoutcast-support I´m still waiting for.
But a lot space left for improvements.
Please keep working on it!

Great application for the PS3 and well stocked with music and videos from day one, great job!
Just noticed that you have a twitter account for VidZone, any chance of setting one up for PlayTV (another great app for the PS3 BTW)? It would be great to see what the team are working on for both VidZone and PlayTV!

Can you tell us how often new tracks will be added, perhaps you can put news about recently added artists on the home page. Will this be a weekly update?
Many thanks

Loving VidZone, but totally hating the fact that all of the vids have different volume levels.
Watch 1 with TV @ 25 and its a good listening level. The next vid plays and the volume is too low, next vid plays and the volume is that high that my TV nearly explodes!
PLEASE NOISE BALANCE ALL OF THE VIDEOS !!!
I cannot deal with reaching for the TV remote every time a different video plays.

I so agree with the comment above
I made a playlist of songs to listen to while im studying and i had to keep getting up for the romote to turn the TV up when some of songs volume were too low and some were too high especially la roux – in for the kill. I hope something is done about that.
Otherwise it’s a great service the quality of the videos are great and im happy about the available music videos so far, i just hope more genre’s and songs are added soon and that the rest of Europe can enjoy this great service

Hmm, I too have downloaded this and the application looks terrific with the exception that I can’t hear a thing. I have so far tried re-booting my system on several times and have now deleted it altogether and re-installed the app but still no sound. I have the latest version of the system software installed and have a HDMI connection direct to my TV. This is the first problem I have experienced with any app on my PS3, can anyone please please help? Thanks in anticipation…

You have the same issue as me, and many others.
There is a solution, but you will have to keep changing this setting if you want your full sound back.
Go into the Sound settings on the PS3
Select the HDMI output
Then change your output options
I had to remove the Dolby 5.1 from the top of the list
That should get you going!!
Of course change this back if you want proper sound output on games n stuff.
Good Luck!

Can you listen to radio like fear.dm and hard.fm? – if not, will it come to vidzone in the future?
I hope there will some Hardstyle and Hardcore, but i doubt it.

I’ve seen there are more people with this problem, don’t you know any solution?
Thanks in advance. Any help will be very appreciated.
