Hi everyone. My name’s Adam and I am the European Product Manager for PSPgo. Thanks to all who answered the call earlier this week and submitted questions, we have literally had hundreds! It is great to see that there is so much interest in PSPgo. I will try to answer as many as I can but any questions not answered in this post will be answered in forthcoming updates. I will provide you with as much detail as I can.
xeeki: Are there any technological improvements over the PSP-3000? Like, the screen, or hardware-wise…
Xeeki has asked about detail on the technological improvements of PSPgo over other models. The 2 biggest differences are the removal of the UMD drive and the new design. PSPgo replaces the UMD drive with 16GB of flash memory and the stylish slide open design has made the PSPgo smaller and lighter than ever making it truly pocket-size.
We have also added 3 new features:
- Game sleep function: You will be able to operate the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) while suspending the gameplay temporarily.
- Bluetooth function: This is going to let you use your favourite wireless head phones to listen to music, play games and watch videos….
- Clock and calendar application: We have included a clock and calendar application which can be viewed both when the sliding panel is open and closed.
Nemhome: Will the PSPgo be delivered with a USB cable?
I am happy to say that the answer is yes. PSPgo will come bundled with everything you need for you to start enjoying all it has to offer. Included in the box along with the PSPgo will be a USB cable, AC adaptor and Media Go software.
PSPgo comes bundled with Media Go, which is an easy to use PC application that makes it simple for you to browse PlayStation Store, as well as organise and store all your favourite downloaded games, demos, music, movies and photos.
We know that being able to effectively store, organise and access your content is key so we have created a video to help explain how you can make the most of PSPgo. Check it out.
disc: What is the battery life like?
We have adopted an embedded battery to realise a smaller and lighter PSP system. The battery life is equivalent with the current models meaning approximately 3 to 6 hours for gameplays and approximately 3 to 5 hours for playing back videos. Hope that answers your question disc.
KSPRAYDAD has been asking about peripherals so here is an update:
The peripherals on offer at launch for PSPgo are USB cable, AC adaptor, Video-out cables (AV cable and component AV cable) and a Cradle. We are currently considering introducing other peripherals for PSPgo but can not provide details at this point.
Another big question was if the current peripherals can be used with PSPgo. We have reduced the size of the USB connector and introduced multi-function features which has allowed us to obtain a smaller and lighter PSP. As such the peripherals for the current PSP models do not currently work on PSPgo however we are considering introducing a special attachment that can connect current peripherals to PSPgo.
Can I download games on to a memory stick?
PSPgo is disc free with a 16GB of built-in memory for storing all your essential games, videos, photos and music. However if you do fill this up there are a couple of options to store and manage your games, music, videos and photos. You will be able to back up to a PC via Media Go or to the M2 Memory Stick to store more content for PSPgo.
Torence: Why have you changed the format of the removable memory?
Torence has asked the above question and it is a good one. PSPgo uses M2 memory sticks which are smaller and take up less room on the device. This meant that we saved space and could make the PSPgo pocket-sized. However, you will be able to transfer the data from your Memory Stick Duo to your PC via Media Go and then transfer it to the PSPgo or M2.
theTMO / pavianexodus: Will it be possible to transfer my UMD games to the new PSPgo?
We know that there are many of you excited about PSPgo but are hesitant at leaving your UMD games collection behind. We recognize this and as such we are planning a goodwill programme and will unveil more details soon.
We also know that there are many already released UMD games that you may not own but want to play in the future on your PSPgo. To make this happen we are considering every possibility to bring downloadable versions for the majority of past titles available only in UMD to the PlayStation Store along with all new releases. We will announce further details on this.
How much will PSPgo cost?
Many of you have asked about the price of PSPgo throughout Europe and the PAL territories and we announced at E3 that PSPgo will retail in Europe at 249 Euros. Many of you have asked more specifically what price this will mean in your local currency. Unfortunately at this stage we are unable to define prices in countries where the Euro is not present at this time but I can assure you that as soon as these prices have been agreed upon I will let you know.
Will the price differ between the UMD version and the downloadable version?
I know this is something that is a concern for you. Unfortunately, I don’t have the answer for you on this at the moment. I can however assure you that I will share this information with you as soon as I get it.
I hope I have managed to answer some of the most burning questions! Feedback is always welcome and we do appreciate all the comments and questions. I will be posting regularly to update you on the latest information on PSPgo.
Thanks!
Adam

It is too expensive, did you do focus testing on millionaires or something? 249… I can get an xbox 360 with at least 3-4 games for that price!
I might get it if it is below 200… but 250 is just ridiculous.

My Ps3 is currently setup as a media server. whilst i’m aware i will be able to use remote play to acess stuff on the console. Can i take file from the media server (mac) and place them on the Pspgo ? or will I have to have them on the Ps3

Pricing is a bad joke, and no UMD drive cuts you off from second hand and discounted games (look at the difference between RRP and best prices for UMD-based games using gamestracker.com or a similar site – there’s no way you’ll see the same with downloadable titles from Sony’s store). I’m not seeing any convincing reason to go for a Go over a 3000 and hefty memory card.

Getting closer to reining me in. Good to hear that they are thinking of an adapter so I can use my GPS. That and an ability to convert UMDs are very important for me.
The suspend game feature is great, I’ve wanted that for so long as I often have to exit a game when I get to the end of my train journey to listen to music for my walk.
Of course, the other problem beyond the hardware price is the price of games on the store are alway RRP and more than they cost in most shops, especially as they get older. Never much in the way of special offers on the playstation store.

I am just dissapointed in the pricing of the PSP Go. I would love to get one but I can not afford one for that price. £179 would be a lot more reasonable. Any plans to re adjust the pricing in time for launch? Or are there any plans to make a bundle value package in the UK at launch?
Thanks.

Dear Adam,
Will the PSPgo introduce PSN Trophies for future titles?
It would be pretty awesome to have both PS3 and PSP Trophies counting towards our gamer level

@Andrefpvs
No Trophies on PSP. Blame it on the hacked PSP’s.

Damn no answer about “How 2 buy games if you don’t have a creditcard?”
Why is Sony so silent about this? Do they want to make money or are they,,,,,

Well, I dislike the price but love the new PspGO! design and features, specially as a true portable system. But there are some questions in my mind:
– Will Sony eventually launch some kind of free application in order to grant users the power to create some kind of low weight applicattions (like another styles for the clock, minigames, etc)?. Of course i’m not talking about a full devkit. The idea is give some lightweight apps to bring users the opportunity to create and share their own content. The inspiration cames from LBP, of course.
– Can I charge my future PspGO! using the usb (connected to a Ps3, a Pc or another thing)?
– What about the gps function? It’s included?
See you
.

basically i see this session as a chance to plug the GO! instead of answer questions. sony just dont get it charging 5/6 of a ps3 for a psp bullcrap. i still have a 1000 and am upgrading for my 18th birthday and i might as well get a 3000 with a super sized stick. to me the GO is epic fail until it reaches £180

My question is:
The PSN Store isn’t present in all of the world, not even in all 27 European countries. With the full digital download service for the PSP Go how can the unprivileged countries benefit from the PSP Go if we don’t have PSN Store? I know that there is the PSP 3004 but I already have one, and I really want a PSP Go, I love the concept, I love the design, it is superior to the PSP 3004. So: how can I get content without PSN Store here in Romania?
Second question, not PSP Go related but PSN related: why don’t you give us a global PSN store for the countries where there isn’t a PSN Store? We really don’t need localization, because we play our games with one of the 4 main languages of europe anyhow, because we never got localization. So a global (or at least european) store would be a good idea.
This were my questions and I think half of the European countries (without PSN Store) are asking the same … So we are ignored as always. Thank you Sony.

Thank you for avoiding most important questions and just answering those we already knew.
-Why that ridicolous conversion $=€? Not only for the PSPGo!, but the games too (19.90$=19.90€ for example, and this time the distribution cost are crearly out).
-Will we have Video Store as USA, or the only thing that make us equal to them is the money conversion? They pay less than us and they have more services, that is not fair for us.
-PSN cards? Are we different to US even when asking for a way to PAY you. It’s incredible you even avoid to solve that problem, it’s not even a ’service’, Europeans want to pay, but you avoid giving as a way. And you still want to make us believe paying the difference in the PSPGo! is reasonable?
I thought you really wanted to know what customers had to ask and say, I’m dissapointed about this. But you still can change this situation as you can see we are all asking in the comments why you didn’t answer to that. And better if you not only answer to that but you solve it.
Correct $/€ conversion, same services than USA, and a no-credit card system to pay. Thank you, and I hope this time we receive THE answers.

PSP 2000 on Dell.com right now: $129.99 w/free shipping
16gb Memory Stick Pro Duo on Amazon.com right now: $73.14 w/free shipping.
Total cost $203.13.
Do you really think the internet and digital content savy consumer is going to fall for your BS ipod pricing?
Do you really think they’re going to pay an extra $47 for bluetooth and the clock app?
You’re funny Sony, thinking you can charge ipod pricing when you support flash cards.
Apple wouldn’t get away with charging $70 more for the 16gb touch over the 8gb touch if they had an SD(or even micro SD) card slot.

“Game sleep function: You will be able to operate the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) while suspending the gameplay temporarily.”
Does this mean, if i press the home button it will bring up the XMB, or is it a sleep mode only thing. If it is, it would be cool if you could bring up the XMB (like the ps3 can) while in game.
Thanks

Will we be able to boot games from the memory stick if the memeory is full in the psp?

The price is too high. If it would cost less than 200€, I would buy it immediately. And please bring more downloadable PSone games.

Posted on 12 June, 2009 at 6:17 pm by Vysaek
@37 has a point.
Why spend 250€ buying the PSP Go! if i can buy the PSP 3000 more and a few memory stick for less than 200€? With those Memory Sticks i can download the games from the Ps Store and I can still use the UMD i already have.
So, why should I pay 250 for the PSP Go! if i have that alternative?

i dont get why sony will answer the price questions unless they know that it’s not worth the money.

Adam,
Two things:
First: The fact that the game sleep function won’t be available for 1000, 2000, or 3000 users is a shame. I was really looking forward to a way that I could pause Patapon 2 (love that game). Is it truly that much of an issue to implement? I know the psp is capable of using the present memory sticks for caching which was patched in post launch, so why wouldn’t the same thing be able to be done for game sleep? Is it really the included flash or is it the 32 mb of ram versus the 16 found in current models?
Second:
Will the good will program be extended to non-PSP Go owners that wish to convert their libraries to digital as well? Will the digital versions be similar to the current offerings in the playstation store or will they follow the route of the bundled movies that came with the memory cards and only allow a one-time transfer?
Thanks for your time

Without games included, I can’t believe Sony intends to charge more than £180 for the cheaper to produce go. A price bump doesn’t surprise me, being the new shiny thing, but €250 is nuts and now you’ll have this pricing issue hanging over the go until something more reasonable is announced.

Posted on 12 June, 2009 at 6:40 pm by Vaistrat
I think you are getting enough feedback in one precise direction.
One euro does not equal one dollar.
Localization as a “reason” for higher cost?
Enough is enough; are you even aware of the language we’re all talking here?.Who’s the old fella thinking you will alienate Sony customers with a unified store? you do know from 80’s onwards we people usually learn english in school right?
A friend of mine used to download demos from another country’s store. The mere language config of the PS3 showed in 80% of cases the localization was already there. Not done here.
I too would like to know about technical differences between the older model’s screen and this one.Weren’t you suppose to answer that question in the article? Thanks for reminding us that is UMD-Less and has 16Gb Flash, but,as you Might know,we already knew.
Not trying to be disrespectful here, but Sony has to stop acting like Internet does not exist. We are not in the mid 90’s anymore, where we were unable to check out prices of the same product in other countries.
Europe has to stop being the banana republic of Sony, your conquered market is going to crumble down soon if your bosses keep testing our patience.
Good day,and thanks for your work.

Personally, my main problem with the psp go is 90+% of the umds I bought are from the US, because they were never released in Europe (mainly Atlus/Nis titles).
I doubt this good will program (whatever that might be) would let me transfer these games to the new psp, and even if it did I don’t see the situation changing.
The US has more games, they’re released earlier and they’re much cheaper. I’m probably in the minority and maybe SCEE thinks this type of customer isn’t worth the trouble, but unless that changes I’ll stick to SCEA.

Posted on 12 June, 2009 at 6:55 pm by krae_man
To everyone in europe, your price includes VAT. The US price is before tax. When you factor in the 20-25% VAT the EU price is approx €200-€210.
You’re only being overcharged by about €20-€30. Sony should be charging closer to the exchange rate then they currently are(the PSP and PS3 pricing in Canada is equal to the exchange rate with the US for example).
But you all Really, REALLY need to start factoring in the VAT when you complain about EU pricing. You give Sony and out when you dont factor it in.

there seems to be a common theme occuring in this thread .. the pricing .. understandably .. how gullible d’you guys think the average consumer is? seriously? in the current economic climate as well .. you want us to support Sony when clearly they don’t seem to comprehend what is fair .. £250/€250 .. go buy another PS3!! .. Hell, a 360 .. sort it Sony or you’ll lose a foothold .. £180/€200 seems a fair price but still a lot to ask for what it is from a technical perspective .. PSP Pass

I’m not full of it.
I know the Go is overpriced. I already mentioned in an earlier comment you can get a PSP 2000/3000 and a 16gb memory stick for like $50 less then the price of the Go.
You’re not going to get Sony to change its EU pricing unless you specificly factor in the VAT in your argument each time you bring it up.
Take away all excuses so they have none.

Hey thanks for doing this and really glad to hear there’s a goodwill program in the works, that’s a load off my mind!
My big question is: will there be any performance increase to the web browser? I know the RAM/processor specs are the same as on the 2000/3000 (64mb ram, 333mhz processor) but with the availability of flash ram on the Go! you could presumably cache between the flash ram the main ram a lot faster than you could between the memory stick/main ram on the earlier psp models.
cheers!

dude i get your point but your VAT calculations are off for most of europe due to the falling rates its closer to 15% than 25%.
respect to your opinion and all. (i consider canada a europe territory when it comes to sony, video store etc) but i think u are full of it.

Nice post Komond_Deckard @63.
I’m feeling really dissapointed with those points too… I thought SCEE could offer us EU players more features and be in (at least!) equal level as US players, as we pay stuff almost the double (x1.5)…

Thank you very much Adam for the info you shared with us. I think the best one is the attachment for the current psp’ peripherals, It’s essential to let even more people give in their old psps and bring this new one.
The only thing i hope now, is a digital-rent service…something like we can digitally download a game and play it for 4-5 days, like the movie rental…Anyway, i can’t wait for the 1 october!

@hedges1001
the UK price hasn’t been confirmed. Take away the UK and 21 of the 28 EU countries have the VAT at 19% and above.
Only Cypris and Luxembourg are at 15%, the rest are at 18%.
Its reasonable for Sony to have the same price in all EU countries for simplicitys sake.
Price should be 230 euros.

226′90 and call it a day
just kidding
I think I see where Sony’s coming now.
Major hardware revisions tend to be announced at TGS,apart from correct/debatable VAT speculation,we all know the sweet point would be 169 for a pspgo and 299 for a hypothetical PS3 slim.Winter 2009/10?
Hey,just guessing.

I am concerned about the “embedded battery”. It sounds to me as though you’ll be unable to replace the battery once it dies?
And all batteries die sooner or later… What happens to your PSP Go after a few years of use when the battery dies if you are unable to replace it?
I am also curious to know why the expected battery life is not significantly longer now that UMD has been dropped: I thought this has always been the biggest drain on the battery. Is the “embedded battery” less powerfull than the “removable” version of the other PSP’s?

The Tapwave Zodiac had an internal battery and you can buy replacement batteries and the screwdriver needed to open the thing up and replace the battery online. I’m sure the same thing will happen. You’ll void the warrenty, but its not like the battery will die in warrenty.
Speaking of the Tapwave Zodiac, the PSP Go closed looks just like the Zodiac. Seriously look it up.
The Zodiac had Digital distribution, 4 face buttons, two shoulder buttons, bluetooth enabled and a touch screen all back in 2003.
The thing was seriously ahead of its time.
