Hi everyone. My name’s Adam and I am the European Product Manager for PSPgo. Thanks to all who answered the call earlier this week and submitted questions, we have literally had hundreds! It is great to see that there is so much interest in PSPgo. I will try to answer as many as I can but any questions not answered in this post will be answered in forthcoming updates. I will provide you with as much detail as I can.
xeeki: Are there any technological improvements over the PSP-3000? Like, the screen, or hardware-wise…
Xeeki has asked about detail on the technological improvements of PSPgo over other models. The 2 biggest differences are the removal of the UMD drive and the new design. PSPgo replaces the UMD drive with 16GB of flash memory and the stylish slide open design has made the PSPgo smaller and lighter than ever making it truly pocket-size.
We have also added 3 new features:
- Game sleep function: You will be able to operate the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) while suspending the gameplay temporarily.
- Bluetooth function: This is going to let you use your favourite wireless head phones to listen to music, play games and watch videos….
- Clock and calendar application: We have included a clock and calendar application which can be viewed both when the sliding panel is open and closed.
Nemhome: Will the PSPgo be delivered with a USB cable?
I am happy to say that the answer is yes. PSPgo will come bundled with everything you need for you to start enjoying all it has to offer. Included in the box along with the PSPgo will be a USB cable, AC adaptor and Media Go software.
PSPgo comes bundled with Media Go, which is an easy to use PC application that makes it simple for you to browse PlayStation Store, as well as organise and store all your favourite downloaded games, demos, music, movies and photos.
We know that being able to effectively store, organise and access your content is key so we have created a video to help explain how you can make the most of PSPgo. Check it out.
disc: What is the battery life like?
We have adopted an embedded battery to realise a smaller and lighter PSP system. The battery life is equivalent with the current models meaning approximately 3 to 6 hours for gameplays and approximately 3 to 5 hours for playing back videos. Hope that answers your question disc.
KSPRAYDAD has been asking about peripherals so here is an update:
The peripherals on offer at launch for PSPgo are USB cable, AC adaptor, Video-out cables (AV cable and component AV cable) and a Cradle. We are currently considering introducing other peripherals for PSPgo but can not provide details at this point.
Another big question was if the current peripherals can be used with PSPgo. We have reduced the size of the USB connector and introduced multi-function features which has allowed us to obtain a smaller and lighter PSP. As such the peripherals for the current PSP models do not currently work on PSPgo however we are considering introducing a special attachment that can connect current peripherals to PSPgo.
Can I download games on to a memory stick?
PSPgo is disc free with a 16GB of built-in memory for storing all your essential games, videos, photos and music. However if you do fill this up there are a couple of options to store and manage your games, music, videos and photos. You will be able to back up to a PC via Media Go or to the M2 Memory Stick to store more content for PSPgo.
Torence: Why have you changed the format of the removable memory?
Torence has asked the above question and it is a good one. PSPgo uses M2 memory sticks which are smaller and take up less room on the device. This meant that we saved space and could make the PSPgo pocket-sized. However, you will be able to transfer the data from your Memory Stick Duo to your PC via Media Go and then transfer it to the PSPgo or M2.
theTMO / pavianexodus: Will it be possible to transfer my UMD games to the new PSPgo?
We know that there are many of you excited about PSPgo but are hesitant at leaving your UMD games collection behind. We recognize this and as such we are planning a goodwill programme and will unveil more details soon.
We also know that there are many already released UMD games that you may not own but want to play in the future on your PSPgo. To make this happen we are considering every possibility to bring downloadable versions for the majority of past titles available only in UMD to the PlayStation Store along with all new releases. We will announce further details on this.
How much will PSPgo cost?
Many of you have asked about the price of PSPgo throughout Europe and the PAL territories and we announced at E3 that PSPgo will retail in Europe at 249 Euros. Many of you have asked more specifically what price this will mean in your local currency. Unfortunately at this stage we are unable to define prices in countries where the Euro is not present at this time but I can assure you that as soon as these prices have been agreed upon I will let you know.
Will the price differ between the UMD version and the downloadable version?
I know this is something that is a concern for you. Unfortunately, I don’t have the answer for you on this at the moment. I can however assure you that I will share this information with you as soon as I get it.
I hope I have managed to answer some of the most burning questions! Feedback is always welcome and we do appreciate all the comments and questions. I will be posting regularly to update you on the latest information on PSPgo.
Thanks!
Adam

@79 krae_man. I know the VAT thing, but even with the 16% of VAT (IVA in my country), the PSPGo! costs 50€ more than the US version. And I wouldn’t mind if all that money were VAT, as at least, that would be for hospitals, social helps, etc. But those 50€ Sony earns are simply for them as they cannot make a good conversion. So don’t make VAT the only guilty in that.
1€ is not equal to “correct $/€ conversion” + VAT.

I have a question about the new features that will be added to the psp go. While im sure that the Bluetooth function will be exclusive to the PSP Go, would it be possible to have the Game sleep function and Clock and calendar application on the psp 1000-3000 series? Also are there any plans for those features to eventually be brought over to the other PSP’s or will they also stay a PSP Go exclusive?

If PSP 3000sales Spike.

What’s that, $250USD? I’ll buy a PSP 2000/3000 and 16gb Memory stick pro duo less then that cuse I’ll get better battery life and I’m an internet savy digital consumer and know how to find a better deal online.
K thx by Sony.

ive gotta say this Q and A was pointless we knew all this already.
why with the UMD drive gone is the battery life still crap? 3 – 6 hours.
why is it being overpriced in europe at €249 when its $249… at current exchange rates the american price point should make the europe release €177 and for uk £155. do you really think we will buy it when we can goto import places and get it for cheaper? because lets be honest were in a credit crisis and i aint shelling out an extra £100 for summit that’s cheaper abroad! i want a PSP go… but i can live with my old one and an 8gb stick and get the same result so far.

Ive got one burning question-why is this blog so full of moaners? Seriously – unless you’ve got something new and interesting to say – don’t post! Yes, everyone’s got complaints, yes SCEE has its flaws, yes the PSP Go could be seen as overpriced, yes there’s lots to complain about. You think Sony don’t know this already? You think posting the same complaints over and over is going to get anything done faster? If Sony is hated and is as bad as some of these posts imply, then why would anyone buy their consoles?
This blog post isn’t just to satisfy all the hardcore gamers out there, who know about the PSP Go already. This is a community blog, for EVERYONE. I myself didn’t read in to the PSP Go too much when it was announced and so I found this post really quite useful. Just because it skirted some of the more difficult question doesn’t mean Sony is evil or whatnot. It just means they’re not ready to answer some questions yet. Mr Grant even said that questions not answered here will be in due course.
In the end, it comes down to one thing – if you want a PSP Go, buy one. If you don’t think it’s worth the money, don’t. Just don’t sit there and moan just for the sake of it.

OMG!!!
Those answers are complete [DELETED] Yes you heard me sony.
But what makes me sick is the way they distort what people ask for, i mean, hundreds or even thousands have asked why the us price at $249.99 and European at €249.99 if Euro has more value over dollar, and they simple add an answer sayin’ “user x asked how the psp go will cost” pffff are you [DELETED] kidding me!? We already knew that and we want, demand, an explanation (and I don’t believe that is one beside ‘money money money’ for sony pockets) for the pricing being set that way ’cause Europe will be paying for what the us users won’t pay.
PSP go won’t worth €249.99, not even close and not in this world.
I only have one thing more to say: sony, you’ll not see the color of my money and I wish many hundreds of thousands think like me and then you can pick the psp go and sitck it up yours (you know).
I can already smell ‘censored’ in my post… yeah, that’s how sony works! When they don’t like to hear the truths they simply ‘erase’ them.

@109 Brownber. Let’s see, I thought you are moaning about moaners. I don’t see the reason to make a Q&A where everything answered was already knew before. If someone was interested in PSPGo!, all that questions were answered in official information given in media, so I guess, and we all did, that when they make a Q&A they have to answer the things most of the people want to know but cannot, not what some that weren’t enough interested in the console to be able to read by themselves asked. A Q&A is for answering those things people ask and have no answer anywhere.
And of course we are not Sony haters, I have all Sony consoles (PSONe, PS2, PSP-1000 and PS3, and other Sony products), and me and most of the others are not complaining about Sony itself, but about what they are doing in this case (Price, Store, Pay w/o credit card), and specially, making a Q&A where those things that were asked the most aren’t solved. In some cases he just said “We are not sure about that right now”, but those others were directly ignored when they were the most frequent and yet unsolved questions.

@109 Brownber.
They don’t have plans about Video Store? It’s a very important thing, you have or you don’t have plans for that? Simple question. Unsolved. That could be important in my decision to buy a PSPGo!
Do you have plans about PSN-Cards in Europe? Yes, or no. Easy. That could be important in my decision to buy a PSPGo!, I would like to be able to pay games, obviously.
And of course, that we have to pay more having less services is an important thing in this topic. It’s time for Europeans to be equal than other players in the world. SAME SERVICES NOW!

I think that the price is so high. Although, looking how you make the currency conversion ( 250$ = 250€ ??? )… and happens with all the products, so please make the things right, 250$ = 178 €. Please European users want the best PSX games on the store, like japanese store. Pre-paid card for European users please.

I don’t see why the battery life isn’t long considering Sony specializes in making batteries also. The PSP GO should have an equivalent battery life to that of a 3000 with the extended battery from the 1000 which would make the battery life closer to being 6-10 Hours of Gameplay ALTHOUGH it would be shorter than a DSs’ battery life it would be a HUGE improvement over the average PSPs 3-6 hours of gameplay.
AND also really? a goodwill program? why don’t they just allow users to somehow go to a retailer and get download vouchers for games they already own? As opposed to turning in our already bought games ,and might i add games we would probably love to keep.

Despite the inflated price and lack of a touch screen I was still considering the psp go (don’t own a psp), but the more info I read about it the less appealing it seems…(don’t even get me started on the proprietary port)
Having the same not-very-great battery life as previous psp WITH UMD drives is a pretty lousy decision, especially since the battery is internal this time and can’t be swapped out or upgraded as needed.
It’s all well and good the device is pocketable now, but what’s the use if it runs out of power so quickly? Are we supposed to carry the adaptor around everywhere as well? I’m assuming the battery life quoted above doesn’t even include bluetooh use (eg A2DP) – one of the strengths of the psp go – which will just make the problem worse.
I hate having to charge my DS all the time already and that has better battery life than the psp go…

for questions on the hardware specs please visit http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/090603a_e.html
If I’m not mistaken Sony have not announced everything about this console. They could have something up their sleeves that not only makes up for this price (imo: free downloads with pspgo purchase. $$50 psn codes to download your collections?? who knows!) but has evaded leaks and unloyal employees.
Keep in mind that there is still ~15 weeks till it is released, which is plenty of time to announce something we don’t know.
So please, stop complaining about the price, it’s not doing anyone any good.
in relation too battery life, perhaps one of their unannounced peripherals could help with that
Also, for those in nz/aus the release date is 1st october, as per nz.playstation.com

Will be any “renove plan” for those who have PSP 1000-2000-3000?
If good renove i may buy, not if no PSN cards in europe and most games in PlayStation Store.
250$ is not 250€, with 250€ i can buy a 360 premium with 2 games, why should i buy a PSP Go!. Even with 250€ i can buy a preowned PS3 or 8-9 low-cost games. That’s because i may buy, just with a good renove. Do you really think any not-mad person will pay 250€ for a PSP Go! if they can buy a 3000 one for 150-180 with a game?
122
Posted on 13 June, 2009 at 10:53 am by VitalogyPJ
Skald90, i wouldn’t say better. I’ve been saying that for quiet long time in this blog, but I guess sony people close their eyes to posts like this, they must suffer of some kind of blindness for posts like this.
Like you said, with €250 we can ‘trade’ sony for m$ and guess what, we can even dl backups too so unless psp go can take coffees or cut the grass or make orange juice I can’t see any utility in it that PSP-3000 already has with bigger screen.

Posted on 13 June, 2009 at 11:26 am by Wiwo
I see several problems with the new PSP.
I have 35 games in UMD, and as I’ve read, some third party games may not be able to be used in the new PSP. A lot of my games are from third parties and you don’t assure me I will be able to play them in PSPgo.
I have PSP-1000 since day 1. I bought it for the screen, and the new one is smaller. And as PSP-1000′s digital pad sucks, I’m used to play with the analog stick, but in the new version, it’s position doesn’t seem too comfortable.
So probably I won’t buy the new PSP (if at least the battery were better…).

Since Playstation has always had a slight tie to Linux is there going to be media go for Linux users? I hate windows and mac is overpriced so I use open sourced anything. Will I be able to get media go for my PC?
I’m also seconding how annoying it is that us Europeans pay extra so America and Japan can have lower prices but I think it’s more likely that I will start bleeding money than that injustice being rectified.

@ Bloody_Marcel
And the funniest thing is I didn’t even saw that question in the comments on the other post LOOOOL I only saw people asking an explanation for the US an EU price.
They hei, its sony… they do want they want to do thinking in and only in themselfs and their pockets. For them, consumers are clowns.
I guess i’ll start lookin’ for produtcs in other companies that at least care about consumers.

Posted on 13 June, 2009 at 3:09 pm by boxman96
No offence, but 16 GB isnt too much space for games, knowing that most games being made are over a gig. ALso, do you think you could enhance a few things before you release it… Like let use scroll through the XMB without the bottom sliding part being out? And putting a friends list in the XMB? We really need those, badly.
131
Posted on 13 June, 2009 at 3:26 pm by faceless360
i see some people mentoning that the US price doesn’t include tax. Well, some states in the USA have no tax at all. in most states, it’s around 4-6%. in the expensive states like Illinois, New York and California it’s around 8-10%, so it still doesn’t compare to the 15-18% figures i see people mentioning for VAT.
132
Posted on 13 June, 2009 at 3:43 pm by hedges1001
thats the point if you include tax for the US we european users still get shafted. (look at game prices we europeans wish games equal $60 then they would be more affordable) i feel sorry for australasian users though they pay even more than we do.

Firstly I’d like to say thank you for answering some of our questions and the PSPgo looks like an amazing machine and a big improvement on the PSP 3000, aesthetically.
What does concern me though is the fact that the actual screen resolution and hardware capabilities don’t seem that much improved.
Also, I know some others guys here have asked the question but to no reply. You keep mentioning the fact that the PSPgo will come with software called Media Go that will be compatible with a PC. Thankfully I am a Mac user and was just wondering whether you will supply software that will be compatible with Mac OS X?

€250 is fair… is it as fair as €178 which is the US price point equivalent? your going to pay nearly 100 euros more for something with less services in Europe. this isnt me moaning or complaining i just dont see how you can consider it fair?

I’ve been trying out Media Go with my PSP-2001, and already I’m scratching my head and wondering “what were they thinking??!!”
Converting any video from my PC’s library for the PSP to transfer it works fine – but Media Go *always* converts at a resolution of 720×480, way above what the PSP can display. This doesn’t appear to be able to be changed.
The result is that a single music video running 3 minutes 54 seconds is 165MB big.
I call software design fail on this one. Back to the drawing board for Media Go

Hey !
I really hope you’re gonna read and answer me this.
Have you guys concidered a HDMI video out ?
I live in Denmark where component cables are .. well they aren’t really used. So the only choice i have for using my psp with a tv is a AV cable.
The quality difference in the picture with using SD vs HD on a hdtv are pretty big, which is why I decided to ask this question.

I think a bad decision is the removal of the UMD drive – we’re all forced to download the games off of the Playstation Store. Many countries (especially us Aussies) have such low internet download allowances, so we’re screwed..

*Yawn*
I liked the way you dodged the last question… Im willing to bet it wont be sold at a competitive price (as in, £10 less than RRP) and once demand falls for UMDs (and thus price) then i just dont see how Sony will be able to sell Digital downloads cheap enough for the likes of me to want a PSPgo. Especially when its over priced at the start anyway! Hmm, let me think, an older PSP for under a £100… or the same bit of kit, just re branded for £200+?
Give it a few weeks/ months and i would bet that the older PSPs will be less than half the price.
What about older games? Sorry, but that is a very important thing and you neglect to make any meaningful comment on it. Seriously, I see no point to the PSPgo other than to boost your finances. The time/ effort would have been better spend branding the PS3 in the first place… And reviving the psps product life cycle in simpler ways (price cut)

Just my comments. PPSgo 249 $ = 249 Euro? How about 1$=1,3949 EUR? 249 EUR =347,3288$
Any hefty price tag in EU?
The price for games? How about no physical disk and manual? So the price should be significantly below the “normal” price or?
How many times may i download an purchased game? How long will the game stay online and available for download? 1 year? Question no answers.
I remember the shutdown of DRM servers for my music library. That left me screwed with music i cant play anymore. But i have purchased it…
So chew on that.

That is a point I’ve been checkin’ all along but seems sony don’t even care about what the people, who makes them earn money, have to say about that.
And it gets even worst, I read somewhere that the big dogs in sony said that €249.99 is a good price for europe and that consumers think so too LOOOOOOL can you believe this BS!?
It’s sony, what can we say…

Will there be in the future some point cards that you buy in a real world shop so that you can afterwords pay without using a creditcard

Thank you

I’ve been looking forward to the PSPgo since the rumors of a UMD-less PSP started circulating a few months ago. I was a little unsure of the design when I initially saw low quality leaked photos. But after seeing decent quality pictures I think it’s a very sleek bit of kit; I want the white one.
I’m a great believer in digital media as I really do believe it is the future. However, how can you possibly expect the general public to embrace it when the cost of entry is so high. Had the GPS unit and camera been built in, the price would be more acceptable and worthy of the ‘premium product’ label Sony have given it. As it stands the current price is ridiculous especially considering the difference in the exchange rate. Currently $250 = £153ish and €250 = £211ish. Anything over £160 at retail and you’re having a laugh.
I’m also shocked and quite disappointed that there’s no Mac version of the Media Go software available. Sony are immediately alienating millions of potential customers by not supporting at least Intel based Macs running 10.5.X and above.
