Hello, I’m Mark Bunting, the Producer of PlayTV, here with some news and updates for all you PlayTV users out there.
For those of you who are new to PlayTV, here is a little bit of background for you: PlayTV is a combination of a USB tuner and software that you install on your PS3 to watch your favourite free-to-air TV channels and listen to your favourite radio stations. PlayTV works with terrestrial signals, which basically means the stuff that you will pick up with an aerial and not a dish or cable, the signal needs to be digital as this is the new format.
When we first released PlayTV, we enabled Remote Play which allowed you to use PlayTV via a Wi-Fi point anywhere in the world. There are some good instructions on how to do this in the online manual.
Right now, I’m working with the guys from Sony Ericsson to support their new mobile phone, the Aino, which will allow the same remote play functionality that you can get with the PSP. I am lucky enough to have one of these for testing and it’s a very nice phone.
It took us longer than expected to make sure that we were compatible with the current set of games on the market but we were very pleased that, on release, we were able to enable background recording so that you could enjoy playing games while still recording the programmes off the air.
Here’s a quick round-up of the other features that we have in the current version of PlayTV, v1.10 (for instructions of how to download this update, check out the video above to see me show you how).
Live TV
- SD Upscaling – This is taking the broadcast picture and improving the way it looks (magic with maths)
- Direct to Live – You can choose to skip the main menu to get to live faster
- Channel Switchback – use circle to switch between the last two channels viewed
Favourites view option – Filter the list of channels to a smaller list using the favourites option - Local channel ordering – See the order of channels in your country the way they should be ordered
- Fast channel change – We are proud of the speed it takes to switch between channels
- Slick interface – This is self explanatory but was one of out visions for PlayTV
- Interactive – MHEG – “Press Red” and bring up the red button interactive services
- Subtitles – If it has broadcast subtitles you will be able to see them
- Parental Ratings – Mostly applicable to European broadcasts at the moment but we support this
- Text Button Support – Similar to interactive and a bit of the old school of broadcaster providing you with more information
- Audio description – Some programmes have AD which provides additional information for those who are not able to see the picture as clearly. Try it out it is really handy if you are doing something while watching TV
- Alternative audio options – If there is a separate audio track in a different language then you can select this track and listen to it in that language
Recording
- Find and Record – from the main menu search the guide to see if there is something that you want to watch or record
- One Button Recording – Press select while watching a channel (not in pause mode) or select in the guide and you will instantly set (or cancel) a recording
- Repeat Recording – Set up a manual recording to repeat to record your favourite shows (I hear what you are saying about series link in the UK)
- Advance booking via EPG – tweak the settings to set the recording to start earlier or finish later
- Accurate event recording – We follow what the broadcasters say, we start and stop recording when they tell us we should
- PDC this is available in Germany and allows a code to be entered from a tv guide to set that recording
Library
- Thumbnail view – view your library as a whole lot of little pictures and then watch the selected one play back (very pretty)
- Sort option – This is available in all list views, press square and you will change the way programmes are sorted.
- Export to XMB – Need to archive your recording (like me on the news) you can do this via the x options menu in the library
- Radio exported as MP3 – To save space and make it compatible with the music player we export radio recordings in the popular MP3 format
Other features
- TV on PSP (needs a wifi connection when not in range of your PS3) – read above for more
- Recording during game play – You can record a programme and play games at the same time.
- Master volume change – Level out all of your audio by tweaking the audio level of
- Volume normalising – Some broadcaster max out the sound and some play it quite, with this setting you can keep it at a level setting. Good if you are switching between two channels with different audio levels.
- Updated via network connection, we are always working to make PlayTV better.
Accessibility
- 18 Languages supported
- BD Remote supported – The BD remote is supported with most buttons used
- In game help Manual – Go to the manual page to work out what the buttons do on your controller or Sixaxis
- First time help – You will get a help screes the first time you go to a few of the menu options
- Intuitive main menu – We tried to make it so our designers grannie could use it.My whole family can and some of them are technophobic.
Our very first release of PlayTV was well received by many of you out there and I am the first to admit that we have still plenty of room to add and improve things. The major thing that we are working on at the moment is enabling HD and Series Link, but there are other fixes and improvements that we will be putting out there.
Thanks for your loyalty and patience as we implement these improvements: I look forward to trying to incorporate your suggestions, requests and ideas into PlayTV to try to meet your expectations. I’ll be back with some feedback on those soon.
Until next time!
Mark

All I want to know is when will PlayTV be available in New Zealand? I’ve been waiting for well over a year now.

Good day Mark.
I am one of the New Zealanders who have been keeping in close contact with your developers and Dave Hine Marketing Manager of SCEE New Zealand.
As you know with the firmware update 1.10 we now can use PlayTV in New Zealand as we use MPEG-4 AVCHD
Now at the moment we only have one channel with sound which is TV3 due to it being in AC3.
Mark I do have some questions for you:
1) will the next firmware update support AAC/AAC+ audio, all our other channels use this.
2) I have noticed at the moment PlayTV is only supporting Dolby Digital 2.0, will the next firmware update support full Dolby Digital 5.1?
3) This question has probably already been answered but will the next update support MPEG-4 recording (live pause does work 100%)
4)In the menu will there be an option to switch from AC3 to AAC/AAC+ on each individual channel?
5) Here in New Zealand we use our own MHEG5 EPG, will there be support for this in the future. FreeviewHD also uses the EIT EPG for now and next but on PlayTV we can see 5 to 10 events ahead.
Mark thanks for the great product and know I am speaking in behalf of many New Zealanders we can not wait for the official release it will be a massive seller!!!
Cheers
Mike

Thanks for the update – while you’re finding out about Australia, could you please let us know if future enhancements will support UHF frequencies?

Mark Bunting, is there any word, any at all on what’s going down with playtv for Australia?
This is a sure purchase for me, it just needs to be released lol.

How about Australia?
Bloody hell every time I check this blog there is always things that take forever to arrive in Australia. You suck Sony.
also, where is the PSN cards?
At least xbox have some guidelines with release dates across the globe unlike Sony which are slow as a snail.

It’s great that you are extending the playtv capability beyond the psp and ps3 with the Aino phone support – however, do you have plans for IPHONE SUPPORT? Like sky+ does to record etc.
Obviously, this is where microsoft and now apple are more open than sony and hence the hugh success these platforms have with ensuring us consumers can concentrate on services we want rather than the hardware.

@LoveDoctor, if I’m correct PlayTV only supports free-to-air channels. In the Netherlands the channels NED1, NED2 and NED3 are unencrypted but I’m not sure these will work with PlayTV.
Support for a smartcard to decrypt pay channels, like the Dutch Digitenne, would be very cool indeed.

Like other people here, I already have a PVR/DVD recorder (that has series link!!) so don’t need PlayTV but I still like the look of it and recommend it to other PS3 players frequently.
Also, I’m in the UK and really want Freeview HD so if/when PlayTV supports it I will probably get it then.
I have a suggestion for the playTV team, how about integrating the BBC’s iplayer so users can have “catchup” TV in case you forget to record something?

another thing i would like is for Sony to include playTV into the next playstation (slim)
this way we dont have an external box taking up to a USB slot

Hi Mark,
)
I’ve been using my play tv in the UK since launch and think it’s a super bit of kit, while using it I’ve had a couple of ideas which would add greatly to the service;
DAB radio – I know nothing about the tech involved, but is it possible to use the PlayTv decoder to pick up DAB radio?
XMB Radio – Even if the above wasn’t possible, how about being able to play the digtal radio it can pick up on the XMB without having to load up the full Play Tv software? It would be nice to listen to the radio whilst browsing the net for exxample.
Oh btw, there’s one small niggle since the most recent update, the last channel button is the same as the info clear button and sometimes you end up hopping back to your last channel by accident, when you only meant to clear the info window!
It’s handy to have a last channel button, but maybe it needs to be changed to something other then the circle button?
Minor niggle in an otherwise great product though
Thanks for reading!

Hi Mark
Great to see a PlayTV update on the EU blog! And for us to give direct feedback! The silence has been deafening not to mention absolutely frustrating over the last year or so waiting for this thing. As I’m sure most others here do I check news every day waiting on it coming to New Zealand so hope you can come back on a rough ETA also when you check on Australia.
Sony need to pump some real dollars to accelerate development of PlayTV so they can market and make it available globally. Surely this thing would sell like hotcakes if it was available where DVB-T is rather than the select few Euro countries so far.
Obviously a lot of customisation needs to be done for each country but by the time this is done for each country at the current rate of updates- it will probably be irrelevant or have missed huge market opportunities plus frustrated a huge Sony fanbase. I hope you can pass this on!
I really hope we’re able to purchase it soon. I believe NZ is close to France’s DVB-T’s specifications it seems so once French HD is fixed we should be there pretty much!
Keep up the good work in the meantime and hope you give those Sony bosses a kick up the pants for some more development and marketing monies!

I really like the Play TV, but unfortunately my PS3 is offline at the moment. Is there anyway to download the update other than through the PS3, like the FW updates?

Azuicity, Thank you for getting in contact. At the moment we only support updates through PlayTV.

Just a couple of questions, as the PlayTV supports MPEG4 decoding it may also work in Portugal right?
When (if you have any idea) will it be available on portuguese stores?
Thanks and keep up the good work.

If series link gets included I’d probably pick a PlayTV up as a second PVR in addition to my main one (an HTPC), then when I renew my phone I’d be tempted by an Anio.
Good luck with the updates!

I’m starting to really think about PlayTV, but I miss a way to be able to se cableTV signal with it. I mean, all the features are great, but the most TV channels I see are not those PlayTV catches, and the official deco the cable company rents is horrible.
By the way, it is going to be compatible with pay DTT?

it would be nice if items moved to the system video folder were given a preview thumbnail. this happens automatically if you copy something over via a media server.
also, moving radio shows to the system menu is ludicrously slow, if it works at all.
Posted on 22 June, 2009 at 2:08 pm by Mark Bunting
rastansaga, You can create a preview thumnail yourself as I am sure you know. It is to do with the way we move the media around, but I will talk to our specialist to see what he says.
The radio shows as I am sure you are aware end up as MP3 format so this conversion does take a little time, we will see if we can improve it in the future.

Thank you for the great product you have brought to PS3. I imported the PlayTV from UK and it is working great. Only the PlayTV’s internal clock is little off. Have you thought to add a possibility for users to change the internal clock for themselves? That would be a great add-onn.
Thank you again for the great product and good luck with the future updates.

Well i would love to have this product, but when you as me live in Denmark and there is only 4 channels to see on DVB-TV then its a bit much to spend aprox. 80 pounds/800 DKK on the PLAY TV device.
If only you could see the analog channels (cabel) on the device then it would be great or use your own Pay Channel Card, then i would buy Play TV in a heart beat.
And yes i know that 80% of the msg in this blog news is about punking Sony to make different versions to differet areas and thats what im going to do also,PLEASE make Play TV in different versions for different areas.
Finally i really hope that i will be able to buy this in the future, because the PS3 is the greatest machine ever made, just to bad i really cant use its potential.

Dear M.Bunting,
First of all sorry for my poor english, but you know that french guys does not speak english very well…Thank you for your play TV. I use it everyday!!
And don’t worry, I won’t mention the HD channel sound (oops I mentionned it). Hope the update will come quickly!!!
Since the beggining of June, I have problems with some channels which used to work perfectly before. Indeed, when there are quick moves on tv, you can see a lot of lagging (like the image is doubled and that makes you feel dizzy).
First, I thought it was a bad signal reception, but I tried something which incriminates play TV software:
I saved broadcasts on one of these channels where I can see these lagging problems. If you watch them via the play TV library, it’s like in live TV (with lags when quick moves). But if you transfer these records on the XMB, these lags don’t occur anymore!!!
I tried this experience many times and the results are always the same: lags disappear when you watch a record via XMB!!
Can you explain me this strange phenomenom???
Can you please fix it for next release?
Thanx in advance!! And I hope you will not sleep until you reach my comment which is in position 51!!!
Posted on 22 June, 2009 at 2:12 pm by Mark Bunting
allybaf, thank you for the mail. That is unusual can you tell me a ittle more about your Playstation 3, what is the model and is the hard drive the same one that was installed. Do you know if this happened after an update?
Thank you

SONY said PlayTV was coming to Australia… we’re STILL waiting!
Please show some respect and let us know if/when PlayTV will be released in Oz? People are having to import from the UK!
There is huge demand for PlayTV in Australia… don’t SONY want to make any money?

Mark, thanks for posting. That PlayTV is still being improved and feedback considered is nice to know.
As an Australian user of PlayTV I must say that I am quite impressed with PlayTV and regularly use it to record 1080i (1920×1080 and 1440×1080 and up to 17Mb/s) HD shows. It works pretty well for an unsupported/released feature.
Having said that an obvious fix would be to fix the ‘other’ region scanning so that Australian UHF frequencies (7Mhz channel spacing) are scanned and channels found. This would make a lot of existing Australian PlayTV users very happy as it would then work in regional areas and allow city people to pick up SBS (we’d then be able to watch more Premier League Football!).
Some other general functions that Sony may like to consider:
1. Allow padding to be longer than 10 minutes. Australian commercial broadcasters are notorious for running shows well over their scheduled end time. 10 minutes sometimes isn’t long enough. And the broadcasters don’t signal the start/end of show properly like they do in the U.K.
126
Posted on 21 June, 2009 at 11:20 am by onewa
The rest of my list:
2. Add a ‘trim to start’ and ‘trim to end’ functions to allow excess bits to be trimmed off a recording. This is useful (some might say necessary) for HD recordings which can be over 10GB for a one hour show when 10 minutes of padding has been added.
3. Is ‘proper’ up/down volume control possible? Maybe L3 and R3 could be used? This may help in those cases where I jump from an channel broadcasting surround sound to one broadcasting stereo.
4. Allow 1.5x FF with audio speed just like the XMB (I would just copy recordings to the XMB but Australian recordings don’t often play once copied – I think we can wait for the official release for that to be fixed).
5. How about listing recordings and scheduled recordings in the XMB? Allowing users to start PlayTV and watch a particular recording right from within XMB?
6. Please don’t attempt Freeview certification in Australia – you will have to remove the skip button and slow FF down to a maximum 20x. Existing customers won’t like that.
Cheers!

@124: There is a huge demand for Play TV in the whole world, not just in Australia…..90% of the people/friends i know (about 20), who have a PS3 would love to own Play TV and as a MVP on the Scandinavian Sony Forum i know that people would love to get hold on a Play TV device that would support PPW channels or analog cabel channels.
As it is now, you wount get people to spend 80 pounds on a device that only can be used to see 3(4) channels in Denmark, but personaly i would be one of the first to buy the Play TV box is it supportet more channels.

Nice to get updates on the development progress for PlayTV, thanks for that!
I’ll echo some of the comments in post 17 by Fishfingers, particularly with regard to complression of the files. Would it be possible to encode in DivX/MPEG4 format? MPEG2 uses a lot of disk space – even if this option is made available when you export out of PlayTV it would be a considerable benefit. I have resorted to copying files to an external HD in order to save space on the PS3.
Regardless, thanks for a good product – I work with a company setting up green button/series links – so I’m really looking forward to it becoming available on my PS3!

Here’s my wish list of improvements.
Faster loading.
In a perfect world the TV pictures would be integrated into the PS3′s main menu without any further loading. In reality I know this is impossible due to memory constraints.
Off timer.
I usually go to sleep with the TV on (and the off timer set). However if Im watching a recorded program on PlayTV Im always afraid of drifting off to sleep, leaving my Playstation on all night. This is bad for the environment and my bank balance.
Sound over HDMI & Optical.
At the moment I have my sound output to my amplifier (Using the optical connection) because I love surround sound in my games and movies and the HDMI is straight into the TV. If Im watching an episode of Eastenders however I’d prefer just to have the sound coming through the TV’s speakers. At the moment I wold have to go into the PS3′s settings and manually change them before I watch PlayTV. I know this might have to come via a main system update but it would be much appreciated.
Im really excited to hear about series record coming in the future. All the best getting it up and running. I home it won’t take too long. Thanks for a great product and keep up the good work.

If PlayTV already works well in Australia, I can see no reason whatsoever why SONY shouldn’t release it?
I think all of us are sick and tired with the constant stream of excuses we get from SONY. None of them seem valid.
It would be nice if SONY actually spoke with its consumers and let people know what the Hell is going on.
I have put off buying a PVR because I’m waiting for PlayTV. I can’t wait indefinitely! Of course once I get a PVR I won’t need Play TV and once again SONY lose my money.
Surely someone “out there” in SONYLAND can tell me when Australia can expect Play TV? Surely???

Posted on 22 June, 2009 at 12:26 am by MG350
As another user of PlayTV in Australia here are couple of changes that would improve the PlayTV usability
Closed caption (subtitle) colours:
Can the background colour of red be changed to black and the text colour changed to yellow as the red with transparent text or blue is not the easiest to read. Can these colours be made customisible?
Also is it possible have an option to turn on closed captions temporarily using a short cut key on the remote? At the moment you have to bring up the menu and turn on closed captioning, save the option and then this becomes a permanent change. Sometimes I just want to turn on closed captioning just for a particular program.
Schedule Time Padding:
I agree with the point made by onewa with regards to increasing the padding time or making this customisible. Would also like to be able to have the interval setting applied by default when setting up a recording, at the moment you need to set up the padding each time you setup a recording.

The Closed Caption Text would be much better if it was a nicely rendered font rather than the teletext style currently being used (which is ugly and hard to read).

Hi Mark,
Great looking product, congratulations!
Like many people in AU + NZ I am patiently waiting the release of this product. I think sales of this would be huge, especially in Australia due to the number of PS3 owners who similarly are waiting for it and use their PS3 as the centre of their media hub.
Would you be able to give an indication of which quarter this product will be released, eg. in Australia, ie. Q3 or Q4? Or if imminent, then a specific month?
I’m sure you already realise that there are 1000s of posts regarding this product on blogs and forums in Australia, showing there is genuine interest in it.
Any details on its release would be greatly appreciated – thanks.

Mark,
Thanks for giving us the opportunity to comment and I use Play TV daily and generally think it’s great.
A glaring omission for me is the lack of ability to set reminders or schedule automatic viewing of programmes.
Other than that I would echo other users’ requests to improve start-up time; to allow trimming of recordings, and also to export recorded radio programmes as a background process.
Thanks

Does Sony have any plans to support DVB-C (Cable)? I want to use my digital TV (DVB-C signal) provided by ComHem (pronaunced in Swedish as “Come Home” – yeah, it’s true!) together with PlayTV.
I’ll need a “card reader” in the PlayTV hardware to decrypt the signals.
The digital TV providers doesn’t allow free digital channels here in Sweden more than 2-3 crappy once – which “the people with happily pays for trough the high taxes”…
Either way, Sony, we want DVB-C support for another PlayTV module. Got any plans for it? Would be a great expanding point.

When will PlayTV be available in Poland?

Posted on 22 June, 2009 at 3:02 pm by florin
I understand that PlayTV software is developed in UK. Therefore developers have only the local channels to test it with, although they could use a DVB-T signal generator internally.
Do you think it would be useful if us, various users from many other countries, would upload 5-10 seconds worth of data from local muxes, recorded with a PC tuner? I don’t think it would be a problem with copyrights for such small content-wise meaningless streams.
Another thing:
would it be useful to make a poll for the features to be added in next updates?
Thank you for updates on PlayTV developments
Posted on 22 June, 2009 at 3:29 pm by Mark Bunting
florin, thank you for the offer. We do testing in other countries before we offcially release in that country and use a signal generator.
Your second suggestion is exactly what I was thinking.
Here is my plan, I am going to wait another week or so then list out the suggestions that it would be possible to do and then ask for some votes I will then publish this as try to tell you what we are going to fix and if possible when.
144
Posted on 22 June, 2009 at 3:37 pm by sibbor
Poll for feature requests for the current PlayTV? Like I wrote earlier I would love to see DVB-C (Cable) support, but that would require a whole new piece of hardware… but the software could still be remains the same.
So if that falls into the pile of feature requests I’ll promote it a bit harder with this message.
Keep up the good work Mark Bunting (together with team)!! Great with the updates and the platform overhaul.

Thank you Mark for your answer.
I’ve collected a list of suggestions from forums:
- adjust volume from remote control
- per channel type of audio preference
- speeding up the loading (and exiting) of PlayTV, maybe integrate it in XMB
- Internet based EPG (for week coverage)
- record with subtitles
- more customisable manual record (adjust on the fly, so you don’t miss the end of a film or an extra time football match)
- possibility to save the buffer
- PIP on same mux or with any channel when not recording
- display the signal level/quality & manual search (some ppl will want to tune first and then adjust the antenna)
- possibility to edit the list of channels (order, name, preferred streams)
- possibility to have less info on the screen when switching; 1/3 of the screen has info on top of image, almost always I need to press Circle to make it go away and if I press that in the exact moment it was disappearing… I just get a channel switch, arghhh…
- possibility to display more techy info like the mux, ac3 availability, level/quality level, native image resolution
- 5.1 channels, EAC3 & AAC codecs

Regarding testing, I know that it is quite an effort to officially support a new country and that affects the prioritizing of updates.
But, if being compatible with a not supported country requires very little effort, why not do it? You have many customers from Australia and New Zeeland, for instance.
In my case, I’m in Romania atm, and there is a channel that has AC3 (regular one, not DD+) and MP2 sound. Unfortunately, none is heard and I’m quite sure it is a quick simple fix. Product-wise, on one hand I hardly believe that Sony will officially support Romania any time soon, and on the other hand DVB-T is starting here just now so it is a growing market. In UK, France and other western countries you need to come with spectacular features to make them to switch to PlayTV.

First of all,Thank you Mark for answering me!!!
I still have the original 80gB Hard Drive: and I bought my ps3 September 2008.Everything worked fine with my play TV until the beggining of June…
When I watch some channels with live TV, and when there are quick moves or travellings, you can see irregular frame rate and the image is doubled. It sounds like you don’t have the good codec when you watch a video…(I ‘m not talking about HD channelsbut SD channels).
If I record live TV and watch it via the Library icon, the same problem occurs.
BUT, if I transfer this video from Play tv software to XMB, IT WORKS PERFECTLY…and I tested it a lot of times and 100% of videos recorded from these french channels (BFM, Itélé, W9, Direct 8, Gulli at least)by Play TV, have irregular frame rates when watched in Play TV software, but are ok when watched in the XMB… Strange isn’t it?
Just an hypothesis: Some french channels need a particular codec which is not included in play TV software but is included in PS3 system. Is it possible?
I went to check on the net, and some french guys who left comments on forum have the same problem since the beginning of June!
I am waiting for your answer to solve our french problem

Do you have any plans to support DVB-C ie. cable networks and Conax pay-TV cards?
At least in Finland cable networks already provide several HD channels, but you need a subscription to view them so Conax support would be required, which is also true for many DVB-T channels.

Looking forward to any future new update! A poll on new features would be a great idea. Here are the top ones I’d say are needed:
- Series link, BADLY NEEDED! Any indication as to when this will arrive? Only then will PlayTV compete with Sky+. Also please remove the 25-episode limit, as it’s a pain and seems to serve no purpose
- up/down volume control without having to sift through many menus
- when deleting items from library, it shouldn’t jump back up to the top again after each delete. maybe even select multiple then delete?
- startup time – if PlayTV could be more integrated into XMB then it would be much better, and it wouldn’t take soooo long to switch between XMB and playtv
But keep up the good work! Is PlayTV still developed in Liverpool? I live round the corner from wavertree tech park so would love to come and share my suggestions and see the development

Mark Bunting , i’m a french user of the playtv ( so excuse my bad english …).
PlayTv is a good product and a good idea, i regret that MPEG-4 compatibility was not avaiable at the beginning . ( contrary to the TV spots )
Today i regret the compatibility problem with Dolby Digital Plus .
I can understand some technicals problems , but it’s difficult to understand the absence of communication.
With you it’s the first communication about DD+ problems, thank you !
I have a question :
Today we must launch the playtv by the XMB, it will be really interessant to launch directly the playtv with just a button ( like a button of the official remote or the dualshock ).
One button = boot the PS3 and run the PlayTV.
What do you think about this idea ?
