Hello, I’m Mark Bunting, the Producer of PlayTV, here with some news and updates for all you PlayTV users out there.
For those of you who are new to PlayTV, here is a little bit of background for you: PlayTV is a combination of a USB tuner and software that you install on your PS3 to watch your favourite free-to-air TV channels and listen to your favourite radio stations. PlayTV works with terrestrial signals, which basically means the stuff that you will pick up with an aerial and not a dish or cable, the signal needs to be digital as this is the new format.
When we first released PlayTV, we enabled Remote Play which allowed you to use PlayTV via a Wi-Fi point anywhere in the world. There are some good instructions on how to do this in the online manual.
Right now, I’m working with the guys from Sony Ericsson to support their new mobile phone, the Aino, which will allow the same remote play functionality that you can get with the PSP. I am lucky enough to have one of these for testing and it’s a very nice phone.
It took us longer than expected to make sure that we were compatible with the current set of games on the market but we were very pleased that, on release, we were able to enable background recording so that you could enjoy playing games while still recording the programmes off the air.
Here’s a quick round-up of the other features that we have in the current version of PlayTV, v1.10 (for instructions of how to download this update, check out the video above to see me show you how).
Live TV
- SD Upscaling – This is taking the broadcast picture and improving the way it looks (magic with maths)
- Direct to Live – You can choose to skip the main menu to get to live faster
- Channel Switchback – use circle to switch between the last two channels viewed
Favourites view option – Filter the list of channels to a smaller list using the favourites option - Local channel ordering – See the order of channels in your country the way they should be ordered
- Fast channel change – We are proud of the speed it takes to switch between channels
- Slick interface – This is self explanatory but was one of out visions for PlayTV
- Interactive – MHEG – “Press Red” and bring up the red button interactive services
- Subtitles – If it has broadcast subtitles you will be able to see them
- Parental Ratings – Mostly applicable to European broadcasts at the moment but we support this
- Text Button Support – Similar to interactive and a bit of the old school of broadcaster providing you with more information
- Audio description – Some programmes have AD which provides additional information for those who are not able to see the picture as clearly. Try it out it is really handy if you are doing something while watching TV
- Alternative audio options – If there is a separate audio track in a different language then you can select this track and listen to it in that language
Recording
- Find and Record – from the main menu search the guide to see if there is something that you want to watch or record
- One Button Recording – Press select while watching a channel (not in pause mode) or select in the guide and you will instantly set (or cancel) a recording
- Repeat Recording – Set up a manual recording to repeat to record your favourite shows (I hear what you are saying about series link in the UK)
- Advance booking via EPG – tweak the settings to set the recording to start earlier or finish later
- Accurate event recording – We follow what the broadcasters say, we start and stop recording when they tell us we should
- PDC this is available in Germany and allows a code to be entered from a tv guide to set that recording
Library
- Thumbnail view – view your library as a whole lot of little pictures and then watch the selected one play back (very pretty)
- Sort option – This is available in all list views, press square and you will change the way programmes are sorted.
- Export to XMB – Need to archive your recording (like me on the news) you can do this via the x options menu in the library
- Radio exported as MP3 – To save space and make it compatible with the music player we export radio recordings in the popular MP3 format
Other features
- TV on PSP (needs a wifi connection when not in range of your PS3) – read above for more
- Recording during game play – You can record a programme and play games at the same time.
- Master volume change – Level out all of your audio by tweaking the audio level of
- Volume normalising – Some broadcaster max out the sound and some play it quite, with this setting you can keep it at a level setting. Good if you are switching between two channels with different audio levels.
- Updated via network connection, we are always working to make PlayTV better.
Accessibility
- 18 Languages supported
- BD Remote supported – The BD remote is supported with most buttons used
- In game help Manual – Go to the manual page to work out what the buttons do on your controller or Sixaxis
- First time help – You will get a help screes the first time you go to a few of the menu options
- Intuitive main menu – We tried to make it so our designers grannie could use it.My whole family can and some of them are technophobic.
Our very first release of PlayTV was well received by many of you out there and I am the first to admit that we have still plenty of room to add and improve things. The major thing that we are working on at the moment is enabling HD and Series Link, but there are other fixes and improvements that we will be putting out there.
Thanks for your loyalty and patience as we implement these improvements: I look forward to trying to incorporate your suggestions, requests and ideas into PlayTV to try to meet your expectations. I’ll be back with some feedback on those soon.
Until next time!
Mark

@usalborg: they don’t have to create a new hardware for that: subscription card interfaces are standardized, they can be read by a PC/SC-compatible smart card reader, those readers are available with USB-interface. So – I think – it’s really a software “issue”. (see my post #196)

@KRoy_03: Ummm, I did not think about that…you made a really good point. But, I’m not sure if it is possible for PlayTV case. But, in theory it should not prevent to use USB interface to read the cards. Maybe Sony is stuck with some patent issues? Otherwise, I really can’t understand why DVB-C is not supported. We Goddamn do not live in 20th century where DVB-T signal coming from your antenna, hence today, mostly, we get signal from our cable tv providers. At least Sony can comment on this, since this a popular feature which has been asked several thousand times. Mark, please comment on it!!!!

I have a conflict with two channel in Italy: Sportitalia and Timb Test 4 at LCN 23. It’s possible to insert the manual programming in the next PlayTv update?

Hi Mark,
I’m living in Israel which started with DVB-T broadcasts using MPEG-4 format. I got the PlayTV to check it out here, but unfortunately I can’t complete the PlayTV set-up process since it doesn’t discover on-air channels. I guess that it’s due to the fact that it’s looking for MPEG-2 format.
As far as I know version 1.10 support MPEG-4, and I’ll appreciate your assistance in letting me know, how can I upgrade the PlayTV SW to the new version 1.10.
I would like to comment, that the system architecture isn’t correct nor logical. Why should the completion of an initial set-up process of the device be dependent on the existence of on-air broadcast?
A more proper way to do it, is to complete a basic set-up which makes the device ready, and then to provide all of the necessary tools for changes or adjustments if needed.
Looking forward to hearing back from you or from your customer support team on how should I perform the upgrade?
Thanks,
Jacob

@Jacob
Your problem has nothing to do with MPEG4 versus MPEG2, it is simply that PlayTV cannot find a DVB-T broadcast (I know this because the original software can pick up MPEG4 broadcasts in New Zealand). Your problem could be because PlayTV doesn’t scan the correct frequencies (this is a problem in Australia) or because you’re not actually receiving DVB-T broadcasts (perhaps a problem with your aerial). Either way, you can’t update PlayTV without first successfully finding a DVB-T channel (yes, I agree this is a strange design decision). The only thing you can do is take your PS3 and PlayTV somewhere that definitely receives a DVB-T broadcast and set it up there. Otherwise you will have to wait until a new version of the software is shipped on disc (maybe the Australian release as frequency scanning has to be fixed for us).

Hello Mark, really think PlayTV needs 2 features added.
1:) the ability to record 2 channels at the same time, i know you haven’t added this so people can game and record but i would rather have the option to record 2 channels instead ? i fail to see any logical reason as to why this can’t be added as an option (lose the abilty to game and record, gain simultaneous record) then everybody is happy !
2:)series link or a variation of it !
thanks !
Rich.

Hi c_edwards44,
Did you receive anything?
You must receive a signal before upgrading Playtv.
I don’t know why it’s build like that!!!

Hi Mark, Excellent device for PS3 and great that you actually take the time to look at this blog!.
Just got one, unfortunatly Argos in the UK are now discontinuing these, which is a shame!
Couple of little things i’d like to recommend :
Option to go straight into play TV when the machine is switched on. not through PS3 menu.
It would be superb to harness the PS3 power to allow widgets on the screen (similar to new Samsung Tv’s) , weather , stocks, news, would really allow PS3 to stand out from the crowd.
Allow ps3 to broadcast through Web like slingplayer? if this cant be possible why are sling player able to do it.
Just some thoughts, keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing an up-date soon,

Hi Mark, a number of us are waiting with baited breath so would it be possible to give us all a wee update and progress report on the next firmware update and what we are going to expect?
The big ones for us in New Zealand(and many other MPEG-4 Countries) is AC3+ (AAC/AAC+)support, DD5.1 and MPEG-4 record.
And for Australia 7mhz UHF scan and MPEG-2 HD recording improvment.
Look forward to your reply

hi mark,

Just three ideas:
Automatic Search Function:
For when you want to watch/record a certain programme but have no idea when it will be on next. This function would search the EPG every time PlayTV is started. The search would need to be specific, as not to annoy the user every time they tune in. Let’s call it the “Wish List”, why not.
Bookmarks/Cuts:
Bookmarking each section to allow for an almost seamless second viewing. This would be a manual task, but I’m up for the challenge. Also having the ability to cut out sections of recorded content would be great for freeing up space on my HD.
XMB FFwd and Rwd:
Please give the Sony XMB dev team your code for controlling playback. I use XMB playback a lot and the controls are very jerky.
All in all PlayTV is a great product. Keep up the good work

Hello Mark,
Thanks for offering this avenue for us to comment and vice versa.
Initial comments:
There needs to be a quicker way of getting to live TV.
Perhaps a second dropdown option on the XMB to leap straight to live TV?
Maybe also an option of defaulting to live TV when you power on the PS3 for those who are using the PS3 as a media centre mostly for TV.
UPDATES?
When are the France modifications likely to be released as an update? Things have gone strangely quiet on here recently.
Most of the capabilities we require are already native to the PS3.
Majors we urgently need are:
DD 5.1 capability
AC3+ (AAC/AAC+)support
MPEG-4 record
Thanks!

Hi Mark
there seriously needs to be a way to update the software for those that currently don’t have a signal due to Australian 7mhz UHF scan issue.
I imported mine from the UK and cant get a signal yet. I don’t want to have to buy a 2nd when its released in Aus
thx Peter
.ps thx heaps for keeping us upto date on the progress

As an avid Radio 4/7 listener I record a lot of programmes using PlayTV but if I transfer the recordings to the XMB it can take 15 minutes to transfer a 30 minute programme. Is there any way to speed up the process or is there a reason for the delay. Regards, Mike.

Posted on 9 July, 2009 at 3:44 pm by Autosleep
@boodangle
I’ve not transferred radio yet, but a 3Gb movie takes seconds. I doubt the programme is actually moved, simple the XMB is authorised to access the data. Simultaneous XMB/PlayTV file access would be great, but there must be some legal nonsense stopping us having our cake.
If you tend to listen to the shows within a few days you could always use BBC iplayer.

Hi Mark,
Just wanted to check something with you for all of us here in Aus. The Australian (newspaper over here) quoted Michael Ephraim on this page …
http://www.australianit.news.com.au/story/0,24897,25672790-501304 0,00.html
as saying that PlayTV is set to be released here by October. Not that I don’t trust this article, but everything I find in reference to it is people quoting this article, and nothing official. I would love to beleive it, but I have this strange feeling the reporter has just pulled this out of thin air.
Would you be able to confirm / deny this for us?
Thanks

Hi Mark,
I have now used PlayTV a bit more and got the V1.10 upgrade.
Good to see the straight to live TV option added.
Please have a talk to the Bluray/DVD player software people. Their display button option brings up all the info about the video and audio formats currently being played. This would be excellant for PlayTV as well.
Also, How do you rearrange channels? My TV3 for example is in slot 6 and I can’t change this. This feature would be much appreciated.
Apart from that, just the usual requirements for the next upgrade:
DD 5.1 capability
AC3+ (AAC/AAC+)support
MPEG-4 record
Any word on update arrival times?
Thanks.

Mark, have you dropped off the planet? Nearly 3 weeks and not a word? There are truck loads of people checking this board daily, so any chance of an update? … even if there is no further progress. It just would be nice to set our minds at ease that the project is still being looked at, at the very least.
Cheers.

Sorry for jumping in at the end of a long thread to comment.
I purchased my PLAYTV from the UK, it arrived yesterday, and found in my area i cannot scan channels as all broadcasting is done via UHF. My question or comments relates to a previous posting to someone about the in-ability to update becuase setup wont finish unless it finds a channel. For those people who do have a playtv from the UK, Would it be possible to make the software for the AU version of the PlayTV available via the playstation store?? Or will we be able to buy the AU media from SONY??
230
Posted on 15 July, 2009 at 4:07 am by wilt64
bluetitan001 you will probably find all the global fixes will be in the standard firmware updates, for an example the next firmware update will address MPEG-4 recording and AAC/AAC+ audio which won’t effect you but may also include 7mhz UHF scan for Australia but this won’t effect New Zealand because we use 8mhz scan on UHF.
It would not be in SCEE interest to have different versions of software each country it is all bundled into one update which makes economic sense.
Hope I have that correct Mark (:->)

i love playtv – i’ve had it for over 3 months now (imported, of course). just a few MINOR issues:
1. Startup time is far too long. 10-15 seconds AFTER already waiting for the PS3 to startup is definitely not a good thing.
2. Sound and picture both flash in and out for up to 60 secs after selecting playtv from the xmb. this problem is not with power interruption, connection issues, or aerial problems – it only exists on startup to the playtv program.
3. While picture improved drastically with the 1.10 update, it is still slightly more pixelated than when i plug my aerial directly to my tv, rather than through my ps3 (all channels).
4. Obviously issues in Aus with SBS and ABChd.

thanks for your reply wilt64, i might be slightly confused but thats ok, im sure i will be corrected soon. but initial attempts at this are that, you cannot update the version of playtv you have installed until the first configuration is complete. Due to the fact that i cannot recieve a single channel the configuration never completes. meaning i cannot update the playtv software. I am however going to inner city melbourne in 2 weeks time were i will be able to. however if was to format the ps3 later on.. would i be able to get the new updates without having to scan first. please correct me if im wrong..

Hello Bluetitan001
I thing you are right.
If you don’t be able to scan for the first time, you probabli never be able to get the new firmware.
You must find channels!
Or buy the future with a Bluray version 1.20 PlayTV software.
When it released in Austrilia.
After format PS3, your Bluray software is al ready the same.
So, you must repeat.

Posted on 15 July, 2009 at 11:16 pm by richandfleur
I have to agree with mylesmac above. Startup takes a very long time. This is not ideal for those wanting to replace a normal freeview set top box for instance, where you wait only 5 seconds from startup before you are watching tv for instance. An option to start with playtv running may be a solution for those who actually want to run playtv by default when the box starts.
Yes bluetitan, the software version that is shipped on the playtv bluray install disc will not let you update if you have not first found a channel. You can not change this, so you’ll have to go somewhere where you can receive a channel. Or wait until an official Australian version is released and borrow someones Austalian install disc.

Thanks for the response people. I had a feeling that was the case. as i said i am heading down towards thecity next week so i will be able to tune in and get the updates required. In the mean time i am happily using it under vista with media centre and it will surfice until i can sort it out. I am quite happy with the device to this point. Cant wait until it works with the PS3 in regional VIC.

Bluetitan do you wanna take mine with you ? LOL
)
me being in Tasmania I can’t drive anywhere to get a channel so it looks like ill have to wait for the Aus release and buy a 2nd unit (I doubt EB would have the 7 day return policy on this
I just wish they would release it for download through Playstation Store or something

Am I the only one to be bothered by the delay in transfering a radio programme to the XMB? It’s more of an issue for me than the 15 second start-up time! What’s wrong with you people!?!
241
Posted on 16 July, 2009 at 1:07 pm by CmOr
Ummm…look at the flags next to our names boodangle. The majority of people who’ve posted since your first whinge about radio programmes are from Australia or New Zealand, where we don’t get many digital radio programmes other than Non-English speaking news programmes. What is wrong with you person!?! Can’t you comprehend that maybe different people from different countries to yours might have…wait for it…DIFFERENT ISSUES TO YOURS!!! That is what is “wrong” with “us people”.

(continuing from post 231…)
one final point:
recording one channel whilst watching another – significant stuttering of BOTH the recorded content and the channel being viewed. I just finished watching a show that went for approx. 2 hours, with a background recording going the entire time. Only minor stuttering for first 30 mins or so, became progressively worse to the point that even the channel being viewed was basically unwatchable. Please note – both were SD channels, not HD (i was trying to prevent stuttering!!). I hope that it’s not too late for a solution to this to be included with the next software update!
Thanks again. Hope to hear your reply soon, Mark!

Mark, thanks for the update. The product is progressing nicely.
Just another Australian registering some serious input on getting a PlayTV. We brought a PS3 only 1 month ago to be the media centre/hub, I have only just stumbled onto PlayTV. The PS3 being able to do BluRay, transcoding playback from the PC, basic Internet browsing and of course games is fast becoming a must have in my lounge room, to the point where I even removed our DVD player..
However the wife will never permit me to get a Tivo type PVR!!! Due to shift work we continually miss sporting events.
Could Sony confirm a release date? otherwise I fear I will join the 100′s of other Australians/New Zealanders who will import or miss out.
Importing will not truely reflect the uptake in AUS/NZ… sooner you release it the more you will sell here, justify the shipping expense!
Thanks and we all here look forward to an update Mark.
Even a one liner will suffice!
