Hot-on-the-heels of our last MAG preview, Zipper return to explain the reasons behind their decision to create an online shooter that supports up to 256 players, as well as some of the technical challenges they faced.
If you didn’t already believe that it’s only possible on PlayStation 3, then watch and weep … tears of joy, of course!

If we revealed everything to you now, what would you have to look forward to?

I want to look forward to this because it sounds amazing, but honestly check that video and others out, the movement when shooting looks terrible. It doesn’t look realistic at all and a bit stiff. Plus there wasn’t any recoil at all.
Is it just me?

It’s the only FPS that i think actually looks good in the last few years (yes ive had/played cod4/5, didn’t like), so i hope it’s as fun as it looks!

I feel that this is gonna ROCK.
I just hope that this will not go the way of SOCOM , glitchers destroying this would be an epic fail.
It is hard enough to deal with glitchers on 16 player maps, what steps will there be to deal with glitchers I wonder?
ROLL ON BETA…..Wanna try this BAD-BOY out asap ..
Bring it on Zipper, great job…

I’m wondering what stage the build shown in the gameplay is? Will there be much graphical polish to come or is this representitive of what to expect?
NB I’m not expecting graphical miracles with 256 players (nor am I saying it looks bad).

The footage in this video was taken from polished Alpha code. There will be some improvements before release, but the overall look and style of the game is pretty much fixed now.

@Elliot: What I have to look forward? The game offcourse
Cant Wait!! But I really want to see a kind of tutorial how the game works. Because I think that many people think it is Battlefield (2) but than bigger. But there are other kind of objectives etc.. So if you could explain those new modes, that would be great

Ow and about that release date, the rumours are that MAG is coming out 2 weeks after MOdern Warfare 2. Are you guys gonna take that risk? Are you gonna eat up Modern Warfare 2 with MAG?:P

what resolution will this be running at? i mean are you rendering at a lower level (640 for example) then just upscaling it to 720p to keep your frame rates up?

looks awesome!
when ready, can we have some hi-res in game screen shoots please?
also i would like to know more about the weapons used in game if i may? the differences between the different factions weapons and the details of what attachments we will be able fit? I guess some of this will be under raps for now but could we have this sort of information before launch please? maybe the devs could do a pdf/poster showing off all the weapons with details and attachments?

hopefully this will satisfy all our expectations…
BTW expectations…Firmware 2.80 is coming tomorrow. (i assume, cause the debug one seems to be up already). heard there will be changes for the invitation system, but much more important for us would be: can we expact crossgame chat with it, or in the near future?
thank you very much

How much weight is there to your character. I mean are we talking Killzone 2 or Call of Duty? I’m concerned that the character will feel like cardboard eg- Resistance 2

a few things…256 all converging in one place and no frame rate drop…..hmmmmmm…this is interesting…i mean EPIC games cant even handle 10 players in multi-player without chronic lag.
And please tame the jumping it looked a little halo (can i say that) the guys jumping in the video near the steps after running looked a bit too floaty..yeah floaty.
Other than that its looking MENTAL! Im in the UK can i ask now that i want in on the BETA?

Sony should just release the Beta on the PlayStation Store for everyone to download.
I mean, 256 players per game.
The servers will need some serious testing
But, this won’t be able to compete with Modern Warfare 2.
It wouldn’t be a wise move for Sony to release this in November.
Do they really want to compete with the beast that is Modern Warfare 2?

Is there any options for the HUD? It´s looks kind of messy now.

There’s one thing that I think is wrong so far. The lack of real guns. The current weaponary looks dull.

very excited about this game, eventhough the 256 players sometimes seems more of a gimmick (in other words, thats not why the game looks so interesting) it could have a great value to the atmosphere and general feeling you got when playing the game..; for example pc shooters always seemed a lot bigger and more immersive, these are elements im also seeing in this game, by being able to tell how the battle is going kilometers away just by the smoke (or the lack of it..) and stuff like that
i just hope they can get the graphix up to par with present shooters, eventhough it looks great already

Please make sure that we have an option to set up the controls just like in COD 4 (ie R1 to shoot, R2 grenade, L1 to zoom in, etc.).
Also, is there any possibility of split-screen online (ie have a guest at your house and go online together)?

How does the kill notifications work? Because I mean, with 256 players, are you really gonna want to see every single kill appear on your screen…it would cover up all the gameplay! Are you making it just so that the kills in your squad pop up on your screen?
Looking good so far though. Some of the animations weren’t great, such as when jumping, but lets hope thats polished for the final game.

“This is… it!” should be the tagline for MAG – so succinctly and appropriately put there by Steve Suhy. Any hardcore FPS player would concur, if MAG delivers what it promises.
Very nice video, some solid info along the marketing hype. I appreciate how deeply the guys at Zipper have delved into the genre. Ed Byrne’s comment on tackling the challenge of making a 256-man battlefield rewarding, yet challenging was particularly insightful.
I see the vast scope as a benefit there: you can set numerous goals at different levels of the game – individual, squad, team, etc. -, that it is possible to create a compelling experience for even the losing side. Even though you might end up on the losing side, you might make squad of the game, or gain rank in a weapon. I’m opposed to all current implementations of experience points in FPSs, but sounds like MAG is on the right track.
I’m curious to hear more about how persistent the world is in a future installment. Will we be battling the same battles every time, day and week? Or will there be more or less persistent benefits from winning the game for a side/squad/person? And how do clans come into play in all of this?

It’s without a doubt that it’s innovation to a first person shooter on a console and I think that’s what FPS are lacking now since Call of Duty 4, innovation.
It’s looks a fantastic game and I hope that it delivers what it promises. A great video.
