Hello, I just wanted to provide everyone with a head’s up that the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update (v2.80) will be coming soon. The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.

Great, an update, we like those.
No info whatsoever on what it does? We don’t like that.

Since this is the first firmwire that the SCEE blog has been up I might aswell try and ask.
Why Dont you (sony) just keep this update that adds “inproved playback” but doesnt have any new fetures and fold it into a large more content packed update.
Makes sence.
or atleast redesign the updating process so we dont have to reinstall the OS every update.

Yey!! I have to spend some time downloading an update what does nothing… time that I could spend playing a game or maybe having to use Skype on my PC because the PS3 dosn’t have it!!

Do you people every stop complaining? Just accept it’s an update to improve playback quality.

Oi oi, where did the effort go. Stuff like that isn’t even worth a full update.
I remember the days of yore when we used to get a whole package of neat stuff in an update.
It hasn’t happened in quite a while.

Thanks for the continued updates! It’s great to see Sony so committed to improving the PS3 experience. (Although, it would be great if some more detail could be given for what is being changed. For example, which game titles are being affected by this update.)
Like others here, I also agree that there are some major features that we would like to see implemented.
There is one feature that should take absolute priority though – Incremental Updates!
Please, please change your update distribution method so we don’t have to download 120-140Mb every time there’s an update. Surely you could use something like rsync to reduce the download size?
Once that’s done, feel free to go nuts with more updates!

I just had a nap and according to my dream, this next firmware will include the following:
- Fizzy Pop Dispenser
- 5D games are supported
- You can put in more than one disc at a time into the console for quick disc swappage
- The fans on the back of the console makes “Weeeeeee” noises
- Tassles have appeared inside the disk tray. Now, when you remove the disc it looks like there’s a party going on inside
- It now supports VHS and Betamax
- When you turn the consolse on, it’ll speak to you. (Currently only supports Gibberish)
- Something about a cloud.
Sorry folks. That’s all I found out. I’m going back to sleep for a bit. When I wake up, hopefully I’ll have some more news for you.

Blimey – some of you guys can sure moan about what is at the end of the day some really trivial stuff…
Besides, you should be happy – Sony are giving us all a free game to play: Super Firmware Difference Spotter 3000. Hours of fun for all the family…

Well, Trophies and profiles are now loading faster. Still not instantaneously (like it should be!
), but that was worth the 5 minute update, I guess.
(Hidden message in this post: find more hidden new features [DELETED]!)

I have a feeling a lot of these “improvement” patches that are undetailed and Sony refuse to say what they improved is anti game sharing etc.
Not something you want to say

hopefully it stops my DS3 from loosing connection all the time

Yay! 2.80 allows me to watch DIVX files streamed from my media server again. A previous update broke this. Also, response time accessing the media server seems greatly improved. Kudos, Sony.

Thanks for the update Sony.
Although as mentioned, a little more detail would be appreciated.
Either way, buzz around devs is that it reduces footprint of XMB and increases Trophy synching speed so those are great news.

If that’s the whole change log then it would have been better NOT to announce the update in advance.

“The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved. ”
What software?
And why PS3 Firmware (v2.80)?
I don’t understand this, why call it 2.80 and it contains nothing new?
Why not just call it 2.78 or something? With a 2.80 version people expect it to contain something new at least.

One thing I notice is that the speed is much faster when browsing trophies, user profiles, comapring trophies etc.

Saying an update “improves playback quality” or “improves system stability” etc is the same as saying nothing! Define “playback quality, system stability”?
All updates are appreciated and obviously desirable (even if WE don’t know why), however a little more feedback from SONY about specifics would be appreciated.
Update 2.76 was a mystery and now 2.80 arrives with no obvious changes/improvements? Would it kill SONY to tell us what the update actually does?
Considering there is potential for disaster with every update, I would think SONY would make the most of every update by adding/improving something? Please be me open, I wanted this blog to be a place for honest feedback and discussion – not just SONY, PS3 spin.

To be honest – would you tell anyone if you had a very (and I mean very) small problem, might only affect a few thousand users a problem with some software?
If the press gets hold of it, they will be turning it to another disaster for SONY (even it’s clearly not) and Xbois will gloat even more (even they haven’t got anything to gloat about)?
Most of us proberly doesn’t even knew there was a problem so why make a big issue over it? It will become a big issue when *I hate SONY* people get’s hold of it and I think we all can agree that isn’t necessary.
BTW the update is already live, you just need to update manually.

Sometimes it’s better to say nothing at all….
This was probably the most worthless piece of information ever given to me!

Still no playstation 2 backward compatibility? I guess we have to wait until 10-year lifecycle of PS2 is over

Oh, I’m curious if it fixes the problem with battery indicator covering the clock in right upper corner. I guess not. Big fixes need big announcements.

Something is better than nothing. Could you please be specific with what the update contains though? Even if you have to copy and paste its code it would be better than just giving us a line that tells us nothing.

I hope to have in the next firmware update an interactive XMB motion control feature using PlayStation EYE !

Again, hardly any information, and probably a ton of small improvements.
Last time, there were some significant changes in AVI playback functionality, which were not mentioned anywhere in the log.
As the creator of a PS3 video conversion tool (GOTSent) i’d love to have a bit more information, instead of having to spend a lot of extra time going through all test video files again to see what was changed or added. I wouldn’t even mind signing a NDA or something like that, just please give some more information.

Honestly stop wording it all so ambiguously, by saying ‘the XMB will load a bit faster and we have improved trophy syncing’ we would all be perfectly happy, you make a blog but you clearly still havnt got a clue how to communicate, no replies either, USELESS!

It’s so fun to hear people complaining when Sony adds stability. It’s probably the same people that complains when the game freezes on them.

I like these little updates too, i don’t mind downloading a firmware every 2 weeks…BUT….i want the support to chat with an other friend while playing 2 different games…JUST LIKE THE XBOX….
Please…it’s the only thing that separates PSN from the “Live!” experience…

Woah, yet another comment section full of moaning! lol
I can see where people are coming from though 2.80 is a milestone update that normally contains more useful (and visible) system upgrades.
I would love to know what goes on in the background of these ‘nothing’ updates – if it is for PS3 Games why isn’t it a game patch? Is it for a specific bug in the XMB applications? Is it to do with anti-piracy or blu-ray security? Is it a stealth update to lay the ground work for a future major update or new game feature? How many titles are affected – how/why is playback improved?
People don’t like downloading updates that are of no apparent use – as can be seen in these comments!
Whenever you have to do a nothing update like this you should be made to throw in a little extra something with it – like a new avatar pack (come on now – more avatars are LONG overdue) or a new theme, anything to make the downloading of it seem more worthwhile…

I notice loads of people want the clock moving. But does nobody else want the option to turn off the “your friend is on/offline” alerts but keep the “you have recieved a new message” alert? The on/offline alerts appearing every 30 seconds really annoys me, especially when it covers up an essential part of the screen, but I can’t turn them off without also turning off the new message alerts. Hopefully that option will come in the future. At least they are updating frequently.

I agree with others that a proper change-log would be nice. Not that I expect the EU blog people are likely to be able to have any input on that, but if they ever have, please pass the message
. I don’t care for Microsofts quarterly updates to be honest, but what I do like is that when they release an update they have a proper list of changes.
I’ve installed the new update this morning – you could get it through manually choosing update, so up to now it wasn’t mandatory. I think they added the option not to make an update mandatory somewhere in the early 2.7x releases, where they had a fix that was only important for Japan and was only required in Japan, and optional in the other two regions.
I’ve noticed a few improvements in performance – trophy synching seems faster and I’ve heard people mention other stuff that involve the network also performs better. For me in particular though the browser seems a *lot* faster again this time, almost rivalling my PC and less buggy (some forum pages would refresh twice, like they tended to do on PSP with those same pages). Does anyone else notice a speed improvement here? I use the browser quite a lot, almost daily.

A good thing is that this update is not mandatory … Can we know a little more about this one though ?

Increments of speed for fast forwarding and rewinding music tracks would be great guys. The psp has had this for ages.
Oh yeah and move the clock please lol
