yippee! another waste of bandwidth!
seriously, stop fart assing around! how is it that MS can bring updates out 1-2 times a year but you guys feel the need to stuff us around 7 or 8 times a year? come to think of it, last year sony were updating almost every fortnight.

Are you sure it’s not “Placebo effect”?

The playback quality has been what? What was wrong with it before?!!? Always a cryptic description accompanying a minor firmware update! Why not let us in on the details? After all, it’s mandatory to install it (if you want to continue to use the PSN) and it’ll be using up our bandwidth. I’m not asking for much, just that you publish the release notes that would have no doubt been published internally anyway.

PlayStation Lifestyle wrote an article about it which you can find over here:
http://playstationlifestyle.net/2009/06/23/rumors-abound-of-p sn-update-280-tomorrow/
This would be highly usefull for people like me who are going 2 rate this topic… if it doesn’t this aboute does suck monkey balls if it is true however it’s more than welcome

Ok so from reading comments and some other articles unofficial features of this update includes:
Improved/fixed DIVX streaming
Improved response time accessing Media Servers
Reduced XMB/OS footprint
Increased Trophy syncing speed
Faster browsing of trophies/user profiles
Improvements to text chat swear filter
Groundwork for in-game invites (game specific feature)
More avatars
I’ve not downloaded the update yet, so can’t check these things myself, but if any/all of these features are true why not just post that in the first place? It would have saved you a lot of grief in the comments section! lol

Another useless FW update!
A bunch of people are asking about the XMB trophy sync and I was wondering that it was anounced 2 FW updates ago but I guess it remain the same, slow! Seriously, I’m not expecting any further improve to that.
- How about ingame voice chat?
- How about permission to open things on ingame XMB, I mean, when playing we only have XMB access to send/read PM’s, join/creat chat rooms and navigate within the XMB. I wanna be able to change things while i’m in a game, I wanna be able to open a picture that I receive without quit the game, etc.
They keep throwing this useless updates empty saying only “…to improve BD reading and throphy sync…”, its always the same thing over and over.

“Since this is the first firmwire that the SCEE blog has been up I might aswell try and ask.
Why Dont you (sony) just keep this update that adds “inproved playback” but doesnt have any new fetures and fold it into a large more content packed update.
Makes sence.
or atleast redesign the updating process so we dont have to reinstall the OS every update.”
For all we know this is a bundle of software titles, but making people wait months for a smoother gameplay experience is stupid. Also, a firmware update is basicaly new firmware, you have to download and re-install it. You cant exactly patch an OS… stop complaining guys, its a good thing.

I hope this update also fixes the irritating issue where I would get a DNS error message when attempting to sign on to PSN since installing 2.76 update. This has been driving me up the wall since then!

nice update. now time for PSN cards in europe. How are they gonna fix this when the psp go is out? only download games. but when there is no option to pay i think people will download them illegal. so please sony, fix this. noet every person has a CC or want a CC. put some PSN cards in europe. 10 euro is still 10 euro.

I would like to see Sony streamline the backup process. If I get an error while doing a backup, because Sony doesn’t like me to send in my PS3 with my own hard disk, I want to know what exactly caused it.
Also enabling developers to lock save games so that I can’t backup them is total bullcrap! I can’t backup my Killzone 2 save, which is a save point right before the final boss fight, which I haven’t finished yet. My BD drive is toast so I can’t play the game and I have no means of transferring the data.
Please Sony, fix some of that. It has been a while since you released a meaningful patch. Updates to Home are not meaningful patches to the PS3 platform imo.

Not a massive fan of how messages are displayed in the inbox. Whenever the battery icon/clock fix comes, I wouldn’t mind another box in the top right of the screen displaying how many unread messages I have etc. Also pushing the PS button when you receive a message notification should take you directly to that message I think.
Aside from that, if the cross game voice chat can’t be done, why not just be able to leave a voice clip? Just as usefull…

i think they should put the clock as a screensaver or a background picture and sony should make the web browser better forget playback updates….

To all those moaning about the clock – seriously? I mean, get a watch or something. Or don’t, whatever… if that’s all you people have got to moan about then hows about you swap lives with me..?
To those wanting PS2 compatability – i hear PS2s are quite good for that, pretty much 100% of PS2 software runs on a PS2.
Blimey, the internet narks me these days.

PS2 back-comp? In all honesty, why the heck would SONY do that, giving dev’s an easy way out of developing new games, after all – a dev wouldn’t you as a dev rather develop a game that can be bought at 100+ million units than 30+? I know what I would, if we ever going to see it, it will be in the future when PS2 hs been dropped – that’s my guess.
The overall perfomance og PSN has been – to say it at least – poor the last few days, so I haven’t noticed any differences yet.
More avatars – that would require that someone told me how many there where before
, a feature I would love however was to add my own custom avatar, since there aren’t any wolves to choose (if there where then a lot would use it, making it not special for me) so I would love to be able to use my own – maybe when the upload feature for HOME will work.
As previous mentioned – I understand why SONY doens’t release the information – there’s no need for it, it changes an overall perfomance with some playback features, isn’t that enough?

@ WhiteWolfDK you’ll never get to upload your own avatar as Sony are really cautious about things like that in case the system is abused – SCEE haven’t even given us Photo Frames in Home yet (which baffles me as it’s a private space that would require someone to accept an invite and the photo stays in the control of the sharer which in many ways is far safer than the Photo attachment function of PSN Messages).
More fundermentally though the avatar is used on other platforms for example your EU/US blog avatar and your psn trophy signature. It would be very difficult to manage this, imagine having to store and moderate 20 million jpeg images and ensure they work correctly in the blogs and signatures etc!
I’m happy for Sony to retain control of the available avatars, but they should be updated much more regularly i.e. there’s an inFamous PSNID Signature template but no inFamous related avatars. They could even offer premium avatars for a (very) small fee, or as unlocks in games e.g. complete inFamous and unlock a Cole avatar.
Also I’m sure they must have stats on the number of users using a particular avatar – some of the frankly rubbish ones that have no active users should just be deleted to make way for better ones.

As long as they dont delete my ninja avatar I’m happy.
I just cant believe Sony hasn’t jumped at the chance to get the community involved to let us guys create avatars in a compo type event. best dozen every year is included.

Good update – faster XMB is always great!
We need ingame XMB across PS1 games because I receive messages all the time and people think I’m ignoring them

Posted on 24 June, 2009 at 1:09 pm by Apnomis
E-ROLE that’s a great idea! They did it with Warhawk insignias so why not avatars!
It promotes UGC, it’s a ‘cheap’ competition for them, it gives the users what they want which is more avatar choices, it gives them the chance to get something more unique in their avatar lineup rather than just the heads of PS3 game characters, and it saves them devoting resource to design some themselves.
They could have a new avatar category for “Community” or something and pick say 25 of the best submissions. And because avatars are global there would be no reason not to make this a global competition.
I bet a lot of people enter for no other reward than the satisfaction of seeing their creation on the PSN…
They could even structure it like the recent photo competition and get users to vote for their favourites – that way they wouldn’t even need to bother looking at them all themselves, just the most popular ones!
It’s a win win idea!

I just dont undersdtand, to this day, one certain “Pain” avatar. it’s the strangest choice for an avatar ever, boggles the mind why it’s included.

Supposedly according to post#8 on The Sixth Axis:
http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2009/06/24/firmware-280-for-devel opers-only/
the word limit in the text chat rooms has been increased from 32 to 64. Filter is still on though.
Haven’t been able to confirm this myself.

Wait for a reply it´s a waste of time in this case.
In the SCEA PSBlog were a post with +2000 comments and no one single reply from Mr. Eric Lempel, the guy that always post firmware updates.
It seems that we get the same treatment in Europe.
I think when thousand of people are claiming for features that never come since the PS3 launch, it´s hard to reply that.

What Apnomis said in post 107.
Anyway, I think it’s great that Sony keeps updating the firmware. Would be nice if we got more info though, can’t see the reason for not informing what’s been added/changed in the update.

I think its great that sony upgrades the firmware now and then even though sometimes its not a big update. Support for mkv and vidzone in Sweden and rest of Europe would be nice.

Yeah, guys, would it kill you to move everything out of the top right hand corner? Everything clashes, it’s kind of ugly.
It’s not that hard to change some numbers is it?

An official changelog would be great to read as it gives some insight into what’s going on.
I couldn’t care less about:
Cross Game Chat – If I’m playing one game and someone else is playing another it’s pointless. I don’t see the need for it at all.
The battery icon – It stays for TWO seconds… is the need to know the time really that bad?
In Game Music – It’s not going to happen unless the devs incorporate it themselves into the software. MS made sure of that.
Party system – Get the devs to patch it for Home and use game alunching there.
MKV – Lets face it… we know why people want it. Do you really think they’ll incorporate it?
and one final thing to remember…
This is NOT the XBOX 360 and if you really wanted all those 360 features you’d go get one of those instead. I bought a PlayStation3 because I wanted to play the games and watch bluray. If I wanted all those 360 things I would’ve bought a 360.
Just because the other side has it doesn’t mean it would be any use to SONY at all.

Mark it’s nice that you responded. But perhaps it would be best to keep these updates quiet, especially if there is nothing significant to announce. Getting off topic for a moment. What is the story with the Avatars. Come on now seriously!!! How hard is to implement more avatars. At least give us a response other than that they are coming. They’ve be coming for over a year. They’re only small resolution pictures!
