Hello, I just wanted to provide everyone with a head’s up that the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update (v2.80) will be coming soon. The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.

if that is the case then i get it only japanies are living in 90`s
and dont care about online gaming like nintendo and they dont know what people want.
why cant they just let the firmware to the US people i am sure they will do a much better job.

Seriously guys, please make it so not everything appears in the top right hand corner. Whoever made the decision to do that deserves to be shot. It’s such a simple thing to fix, I can’t believe it still hasn’t been done.

Oh sorry for the double post but is there any chance you could move the battery status away from the clock when you hit the XMB ? like move it to the top left of the screen. Becuase if your checking the time and your online you leave yourself open to being killed its nothing serious but it can be anoying sometimes.

I appreciate any upgrades to software.
I usually look forward to them to see what my little black box will be able to do next.
Lately though updates have been a little boring taking away from the anticipation of their arrival!
Seeing as Sony are rreading these blogs I would like to point out some updates i would like to see:
- Access to internet favourites from xmb (allowing you to load stuff like bbc i player, facebook, twitter etc direct from xmb)
- full video codec support (if its available as a common format it should play ps3 – mkv etc)
- a dedicated music player for playing stored music (akin o what they did with the photo viewer)
- oh and moe the clock guys (you say you listen yet i mustave been reading this comment for over year now.
Other than that keep up the good work

@ timesplitter 01: yes i agree and sony guys 1st response hints at that aswell. I’m not really too fussed i understand tht cross game chat does take up RAM and that the ps3′s OS takes up ALOT of Ram but i think that having some link to msn on ps3 or psp would b nice. ino msn is m$ but using another IM based messanger that can connect to service should work examples are: I love Instant messanger etc.
I WANT PSN CARDS FOR EUROPE SONY YOU DO THAT AND A MAY GET A PSP GO!!!

uno this not being compusory is odd too, imean its 2.80 and we dont have to do it that is odd oh also it seems to speed up in-game xmb and trophy synicing.

I think everyone would agree that firmware updates should be treated like Games. Where they get announced a month in advanced so we know what to expect. And if they get delayed I wouldnt care..

- In game voice chat. - Fix the controller battery status and the time view. - Browser acces during the game - Better audio/video codec support ( divx with .srt support, AAC, mkv etc.) - Better trophy view in friend list (level progress etc.) - Thumbnail view of video’s - Much faster browser ( modified ”Firefox 3” or a ”Webkit” based engine for example) with much more plug in support (Quicktime etc.) - Back up the entire Savedata map (now you must copy/back up savefiles one by one) - Faster load time of the XMB in a game. - Auto sync of trophies in the background. If only the half of the list will be added in the near future…..I’ll be happy

Please! for the love of PS3 gaming, put a “new message” and “new freind request” icons in the top right of the screen and make them stick! if i get a message or friend request and my back is turned to the screen or more likely im gaming with all my attention, it can be days or weeks before i realise there’s an unread message in the inbox! and every message looks the same! be it your friends coming online or sending you messages etc. have to improve the psn community features! even if it’s one small step like this!
(and the block user list doesn’t actually stop joint online matches happening does it? just messages…so you’re not 100% safe online from people you dislike in any game >_<)
but thank you very much for the ongoing updates and progress

I am very happy to see that after the update there are some improvements in how quick the XMB load, etc. But I’m sure that me and everybody else would like to see a detailed changelog of the improvements in each firmware. Now-a-days many of us know how to read a detailed changelog and understand it. It’s becoming a basic thing that should be in every new version of something. And if the other improvements that you didin’t tell is something to prepare a full new feature we would like it even more!
We would fell much better if you guys said what are the imrpovements. Really

To be honest I don’t really mind having little or none information about updates, at least I still know you guys at Sony are still developing them =)

@ 3 (Mark Bowles responding to Andrefpvs)
Thanks for the answer! It’s really nice to have someone answer us for a change regarding these small updates! I don’t mind updating at all, and am enjoying the faster loading speeds for profiles and XMB. If you’re working hard to bring us some great new features, then your work is much appreciated! Thanks!

i think you failed to get the message. By all means tell us that there is an update, but tell us everything that’s in it too rather than “improve the playback of some system software”.
Elaborate! We want to know, no matter how miniscule it us

@1
MKV IS NOT A CODEC!
It is a container!
MKV can contain many different audio and video formats that require different codecs. Some MKV’s can contain audio and video formats that “break” the standard.
Go to smlabs and download tsMuxeR you can then load your MKV’s and remux them as M2TS files playable on PS3 providing the video and audio are formats the PS3 can play.
Such as H.264 Level 4.1 Video and AC3 6 channel Audio.
Contact me if you need help with this.
But please stop asking for “MKV codec support”

@49
It’s called the built in web browser.
However that brings me to an interesting idea that I wish Sony would implement, and that is to enable people to create “Apps” for the PS3 or have the Adobe AIR/Flash player native to run “Apps” from the XMB.
Then we could build apps that don’t threaten the security of the PS3 but also add functions for us like Twitter or Google since API’s exist for these things.
So really we should be asking for the ability to do these things ourselves instead of Sony building one stand alone application to do one thing like Twitter.

i think that an update its always good news.sometimes its better than others but always a good job from sony…i hope someday to see new avatars or a avatar with our picture…in game music its a must for all games and taking pictures from the game to our HDD… maybe someday it will happen…

Posted on 24 June, 2009 at 7:09 pm by Enforcer_X
@177
In game Music for all games will NEVER happen same with screen shots to the HDD.
These features are already in the firmware of the PS3 and have been for a while. It is up to the dev to implement them on a per game basis.

@171
H.264 has been a part of the PS3 since launch.
go to smlabs download tsMuxeR to mux your MKV to M2TS

@166
AAC is supported
Did you just put down a random list of things to support?
MKV won’t ever be supported, see my above posts.
Subtitles should be supported!

Wew you’ve been busy on here. And tbh, its alot of wasted time to remux a movie just to play it on the ps3. Should just work out of the box so to speak.
Also, the browser has horrible performance on the PS3, it often fails to properly show this very blog, and I wouldn’t even bother to open a site such as Flickr. That ‘support’ they added to the youtube page is to solve this very problem, but that’s just one site.

Sjeez the most off the people are never happy!
I think it’s just good that sony supports the PS3 in form off updates. Every update (even how small it is) is a update for the PS3.
Keep it up! let the updates come!
also 2 suggestions:
1) When you are in a voice-chat room, you can’t do anything but watch the room.
I was hoping that the FW dev team is looking into this.
When I chat with people I really want to listen my music, watch films that are on the HDD and maybe surfing the net!
to put it simple:
When you are voice chatting, you could be able to listen to music, watch vids from your PS3′s HDD and maybe surf the internet!
2) Please add an alphabetic sort-out function into your PS3 Music folders! I think the video folders have this!
so that you get this: Music -> examplemusic -> all the artists in there in alphabetic order (sort them from A-Z/Z-A on their name or the title song)

I’d like to come with a feature request that should be pretty simple to implement (I hope someone reads this, even though it’s already the fourth page).
Problem: The text in the XMB is not very visible when using a light background image.
Fix: Give the option to use a font with a black outline.

..sorry for my english first.. but I’ll try. I think you know that everytime there’s an FW update a ton of reply expolde in the blog.. I’ll see here.. but also in US blog. And you know what really your community is asking for.. but everytime, I don’t know.. photogallery, life with playstation and so on.. speak honestly, these are all great feauteres.. but secondary.. in a gaming console they are not a priority for gamers. And PS3 is a GREAT game console! Playstation is a grat brand.. a great history for all us.. so we need or ask more social and gaming features.. today online gaming is a strong part of business and entrateinement.. gaming, not PLaystation Home.. so Private-voice chat must increase.. gamers profile must increase and so on..
I don’t understand why spending time, energy and money to develop a photogallery or a text chat that anybody asked for.. and ignore our request since year now.
And the worst thing, you don’t even speak with us.. is more than a year that I don’t see an interview with Eric Lampel for example or anybody from PNS developement team.

It would be GREAT to know more about their project and work.. PSN and XMB is like air for us gamers.
So only this.. speak with us.. and let us know about your work! We’re adult and we can understand and maybe suggest something or discuss. But if you trat us like stupid child.. you will have naturally stupid reactions.
I hope you can understand, bye

I’m okay with the system update but can I please inform you, me and a few other of my friends are experiencing a prob. with our PS3s in which when we go on PlayStation Home & send messages to each other on the XMB Menu while on Home, its sometimes freezes, then I have to restart the PS3 to get it working again.
I admit it isn’t a major prob, but it’d be nice to fix it as it does get quite irritating plus I do know you can send messages on PS Home without tapping the PS Button just by going to the Home PDA.
This is related to the following topic for the people who were going to ask as I want it fixed it in the next system update, plz : )

my wish list:
1. I don’t want the clock to be blocked by the battery bar, ever:P
2. I want to be able to reach the xmb all the time (while on dvd, ps2, psn, etc) and be able to do more while there (options and such).

LOL…. We would have found out just as much if we simply tried to connect to PSN, a daily occurence for many of us.
Anyway, this blog is in it’s infancy at the moment but i hope it improves and becomes a much more vital part of our daily gaming….
Here are some of my wishes/suggestions for future updates.
1: ‘Improve’ the browser (or allow Firefox to be ported over) Please!
2: Remove that blasted clock( or implement it as a background like the ribbon visualiser)
3: A defrag option for the HD (possibly use otheros to run a simple defrag utility from a cdrom or flashdrive?)
4: A simple 1 or 2 click solution to back-up ALL our gamesaves in one go, including copy-protected ones.
5: I’ll have a few more grumbles/ideas ready when the next update comes around…

is it possible to in a firmware update 2.85 to add ps2 game support to no ps2 game supporting ps3s? i would even buy that ability at the psn store if it came at most with the price of $50
