Hello, I just wanted to provide everyone with a head’s up that the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update (v2.80) will be coming soon. The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.

Hi all, like 2.76, 2.80 is a security update hence all the hush hush and lack of details. Either PSN is going through some changes or PS3 security holes are being filled and SCE doesn’t want to tip off the hacking/mod community.

@Bonyman: You might know more than me but realize that not all filesystems(I don’t know what the ps3 uses) needs defragmenting so it might not be necessary, think of filesystems like reiserFS, no need to do a defragment

Hi, good to see the PS3 constantly being kept up to date, even with minor things to make everything a little smoother
My feature wish-list:
A back-up feature just for save-game – Allow us to easily create a backup of all our save games (or just ones of our choosing, similar to copy multiple for movies/music). When you have as many games as I do keeping a backup can be time-consuming and irritating. Can’t back-up the entire HDD either since I have put a 320GB in there.
Allow randomising of video playback when sequential is on – I have some music videos on my system (less now thanks to the awesome VidZone), and it would be nice to have them play randomly, not just in the same order the whole time.
Smoother in-game XMB
Cross game chat

Please, please, please, please……….
I swear you to stop making protected save.
I would like to change my hdd and I can’t.

Why are people still asking for PS2 backwards compatibility???
Seriously, just use your PS2… or buy one. They’re dirt-cheap now days.
Eh, what’s that? You don’t want to have to use up precious lounge room real-estate by getting out your PS2? You want to play your PS2 games on a system that supports HDMI, wireless controllers and virtually unlimited space for saved games?
Oh. Yeah, that would be useful, wouldn’t it.

Okay this is my first entry on any blog so I’ll try to make it count.
First thing first…..just give me a straight answer on this please…why can’t we listen to music and play a game yet? I mean 360 owners have been doing it this whole time so why not us? With such a large investment on a PS3 I think we should have all 360 features+. And can I look forward to Fallout 3 DLC set dates any time soon?
And I noticed someone said something about updating avatars. I think updating avatars frequently would be great!! Compared to your great accomplishment thus far I think it should be a small task to give us more pictures or maybe let us upload our own.
And last but not least……the time and date positioning. I personally have had no problem with it but then again I wait till the PS3 tells me that my controller is almost dead before doing anything (thanks for that little feature).
Well thanks for listening which I assume you are considering your “plethora” of responses.

Hey YellowMegaMan I would love to play some PS2 games with HDMI, with wireless contollers, and as much space as I could dream of. Although that problem could be solved with PS2 games on the PSN.

Here is my wishlist too (it seems comments are read!):
* Filling the few missing extended latin characters in PS3 font. ( http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message?board. id=62&thread.id=1428505 )
* The ability to select Vietnamese as spoken language (in PSN profile)
* Last.fm scrobbling support

@ Apnomis – Actually SONY doesn’t need to host the Avatars, in the beginning, around the time light first came
– we did have our own avatars on the US-Blog, they linked to gravatar.com – so it’s possible, just needs to be coded, so we have the ability on the PS3 system also, could be made very easy, if it scan the email at gravatar to see if there’s any avatars linked to the email we log on with, otherwise it just uses the one we have choosen on the PS3, so there’s no definitive need for SONY to host them, they just need to link it.

BTW have counted the avatars – no life I know
There are 223 at this time and the number before 2.80 was (listen for the drum-roll)
223 – so no new avatars have been added, I think they should delete a lot of them and give us some that looks better at the least, majority of the avatars look very childish to be honest.
Maybe a vote on the 2 blogs, and the 100 with the lowest score are going to be replaced – the new 100 will be found by a global design competition.

(Continues across 2 posts)
Can we please have these features?
- 1st of all can somebody please move that battery icon down a couple of cm. seriously its not that hard. I know basic programming things and all it is, is changing a couple of values.
- Automatic update downloads. There should be an opt – in feature that the playstation when connected to an internet connection automatically downloads an update and then turns itself off again when it’s done.
- If we can’t have the feature above what about background downloading of updates? Even if we can’t go online during the download.
- Make a setting in the settings menu that you can control where you want the notification box to be. Just make it so you can go into the settings then use the analogue sticks to position where the notifications will come up. Let the user put it in the middle of the screen if he/she wants to.

*continued from previous post*
- If you can’t have a feature like cross game chat because of a patent or a physical or another issue can you let us know please?
I would rather know that you can’t then just you leaving us in the dark when we ask for a feature like cross game chat or the party system.
If possible:
- Cross game chat
- The party feature that is on the other system and in resistance 2
Please read and listen and hopefully reply to my post. I would really appreciate it.
Also please try and pass it on to the dev team for at least their consideration and maybe tell us if they decided to implement these or not just to stop people complaining when your mind is made up.
THANK YOU!

Could we perhaps in future have a feature to delete/reset/hide redundant games from the Trophy list.
Thanks

Oh yea also Skype would be a great feature. Maybe Sony could use that to dodge a patent the other system might have on cross game chat.
Also internet radio like the psp has. I love it and I would love to hear it on my home theater system. This might be a stretch but possibly listen to it in games that have in-game music?

Posted on 25 June, 2009 at 11:55 am by Apnomis
I can’t believe there are 223 avatars! Just shows how much dross there is in that collection!
@ jyaki, if you use the PS3 Backup tool in the System menu on the XMB it should back up everything including protected content – as long as you restore it on the same PS3, even if the HDD is different, it should restore everything as was – I tried it when I updated my HDD and it worked perfectly.
@ TheManInYourTV, you can listen to music in-game – but this is a game specific feature that is not normally advertised on the box, if there is no custom music option, just click on a song from the Music section of the XMB and see if it works – it will tell you if the feature isn’t supported. I don’t know how true this is, but I believe MS hold the patent on the way they overlay music from an OS level which prevents Sony using the same solution – hence why it has to be part of the game code instead. Personally it doesn’t bother me that much – part of the development and immersion of the game is the sound effects and music score, why replace it – it’s like taking an iPod to the cinema! I can understand it for the smaller PSN games but more and more of these are supporting custom music in one way or another anyway…

There will never be one?

One other undocumented feature is that USB dongles (Guitar Hero / Rock Band / Buzz) are no longer assigned as Controller 1 !
Pity about the breaking of Open Remote Play…

Cross game chat
Ingame music across all games
Skype
Somthing like a pop-up, instead of going in to menu. And there is the music player and more

@ Yakkity – I actually think that happened in 2.76 because I haven’t had any issues with this for some time and defenitly it was solved before 2.80

TheMainInYourTv, just to respond to your question regarding the in-game music, from my knowledge this option is available but it relies on the developers to implement it into the game for it work.
Examples of these games are Wipeout HD and Killzone 2. There is no doubt in my mind that there are more games with the option available, but these are just an example of developers implementing the option.
Hope this helps

Well thanks for telling me Apnomis and Dannehkins. At least someone can give me a straight answer instead of jumping around and making us guess. But I do still hope they make it for all systems I am sure there would be a way to get around the patent but it is too early in the morning for me to think lol. It is noon now and just woke up bout 15 mins ago.

I don´t understand why a lot of you guys are complaining.
I think that it´s good to know that Sony´s doing Steps forward with our System. You´re not forced to look how the percentage counter will increase during an update.
Any improvement is welcome, hopefully a few of the ones named above.
For me it is definetely an improvement if the Trophy synchronisaton will go faster. A little one, but an improvement.

If I had a say, I’d like to have the option to play a video file, and nominate some music to play instead of it’s audio track. So, say I had a visually stunning vid, and some sweet ass tunes, bang them together with some friends and, erm, beer, and you’d have some nice background images to your tunes. As it is, I have to use another audio source to do this at the moment.
Further more, I’d like some MilkDrop2 style music visualisations (Mmm, perhaps the above video playback could be rolled into the music visualisations area?).
Maybe an animated backdrop on the XMB would be good too. Shall I wish for the ability to animate the XMB icons too?

Hi…!
As i can read in the first post then it is just a small update, witch is fine by me, but as you guys write “The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 software has been improved”, but could you tell us witch titles it is..?
And as many other of the users in this blog, i would also like to see some more details on the updates you guys release. This would be greatly valued.
Finally, because i cant help myself, im gonne post a little list of things i would like to see in a update.
- Being able to delete “default internet favorites” from the browser.
- Being able to delete new features/icons from the XMB, that you give us in the FW updates; like the new fotoalbum feature, News ticker and so on, so you can keep the clutter of icons (you dont use)down to a minimum.
- PC like strukture on the music files/mp3 when you transfer the files to the PS3 system, beacuse when i copy the files back to a PC, then the filenames have been changed, witch meens that i have to re-name all the files again, by hand.
- New avatars.
- Remote Play feature for the iPhone, just like the new Sony/ericson phone.
I have many more things i would like to see
but lets start with these.

hey guys stop hating on sony! (i plan to work for them in the future lol) anyway if you put a little common sence into this then its clear that this was quite a big update, but sony are not revealing what they put in this update probably because they dont want their competators *cough*micro*cough*soft*cough* stealing ideas. sereously why dont you get it? its a big update and they are keeping the cards close to their chest, if its something like a cure to the ylod microsoft may use the idea to cure the rrod or something? i personally like these little undercover updates so atleast i know microsoft or nintendo wont be shady and steal the ideas. but sony we want more mini updates i seem to like finding little improvments on my ps3 after each update
.
one love and god bless

oh and sony (even tough im 99% likely to be ignored) i was wandering if you had any plans of improving the web browser on the ps3? iv always wanted to play runescape on my ps3 but it doesn’t support java
. is their any chance that we will see firefox or java incorporated weeb browsers on the ps3? to be completely honest i baught the ps3 because it said its like a pc on many websites but nah i cant even play runescape.
i hope you do decide to put java in the web browser soon as you alredy use it on the blueray and sun java has partnered with you on that.

It was a good update. It might not of brought more bread to the table but it certainly lead to improvements on the console. It’s always welcoming to know that an update is increasing the performance of something.
I can comprehend that it may be frustrating for some people who would preferably like to know the full workings of the update and what exactly it did. However, if they were testing something significantly big or laying down the foundations, then surely you would rather be a surprise when it comes rather than knowing it already without any real knowledge of what it is.

Please, please, please, PLEASE upgrade the browser?
My Nintendo DSi has better website compatibility! The PS3 browser is CONSTANTLY freezing, many websites don’t work properly; YouTube – mail/settings, Yahoo, etc etc!
The main problem seems to be accidental L2/R2 input of scrolling when a page is loading causing a freeze. Of-cours it often freezes all by itself. I’m sure it can’t manage plug-ins etc properly and just crashes?
It needs a major update! I suggest SONY spend some time searching their Official Forum websites ( which ALSO don’t work properly with the PS3 browser ) and see just how many threads there are complaining about the browser.
I know the PS3 is crippled by not having adequate memory, but if my DSi can work with a website SURELY the PS3 browser should? Shouldn’t it???

Quite well down on the list of requests from most people but please can you make the Content Level for games open for amendment once I’ve downloaded a game? The reason I ask is that whilst the preimplemented levels for each game are quite good I would like to customize it so that I can can decide what my 4 year old son sees and plays.
For instance, I’ve implemented the Parental Lock at about level 7 which restricts Battlefield 1943 and similar games but WORMS, which is level 3, is not restricted. WORMS, whilst cartoonish in nature contains quite a few language highlights which I’d prefer my son not to hear and think it OK to repeat.
How would this change be implemented?
I download a game and note its current Content Level. Have a quick blast on it myself and if it’s unsuitable I should be able to press triangle over the game to bring up the Information (where I can already edit the Folder name). I would like to be able to edit the Content Level to bring the game up to level 7. When I try to edit the Content Level I’m asked to enter the Parental Lock password. When entered correctly I can edit the Content Level (entering the password for successive edits).

Not meaning to be a Sony hater in any form but 2.8 has caused the system to stop “seeing” ANY disc put in the player. Data, game, CD, DVD. No mater what it just doesn’t see it.
I would have thought coincidence, that the player died at same time but I am finding TOO many others out there with exact same issue and all related to the install of this latest 2.8
Nothing else seems to be affected just the disc players ability to do anything.
Does ANYONE have a solution or hopes of one anytime soon?
What is perturbing tho is that this appears to have been reported within hour of 2.8 release and here now 3 weeks later it’s still being offered with no caveat.

Hey guys, a bit of a late comment to this, but you should be able to see it…
For some reason, FW2.80 has locked the input volume of the official headset at level 3. Is there any way to sort this out? Because I’ve just bought one, and it’s picking up absolutely EVERYTHING in my room, even button presses on my DS3! Obviously not the best thing to have when gaming, as everyone will get an echo of what’s coming out of my telly…
Any official word would be really good to hear, as I’ve been fobbed off twice on the phone now…
