Hello VidZone fans!
First of all, I think it is only right and respectful to pay our respects to the King of Pop, ‘the idol’ and without doubt the coolest man on the planet…Michael Jackson. Without him, pop music would not be what it is today. May he rest in peace.
It has been a little while since my last post as we have been extremely busy taking all your suggestions on board whether they have been tweeted, blogged, emailed or shouted from the nearest rooftop (VidZone does not suggest you climb any rooftop for your own safety and to be honest the other three methods work really well)! I’ll be back with more regular updates so feel free to check it out!
I hope you have liked the homepage and playlist updates. So far we have had sexyvids and indiekids, stadium rock and the King of Pop, cult flicks to Festival kicks, and that’s just to name a few! We always like to hear your thoughts on what we should be featuring (to be honest… it makes our lives easier if you do!).
So you’re probably asking yourself where will we be going next in our amazing adventure into the wonderful world of music video?!…Well, let me tell you…
New Featured Playlists
BBQ Music
Well… it would be rude not to wouldn’t it? BBQ season is well and truly upon us and what better way to accompany the sound of sizzling sausages and the inevitable scream of the lost burger or wasp attack than some super summery titles. Videos from The Beach Boys, Jazzy Jeff, Groove Armada, LL Cool J and a ton more.
90’s
Let’s face it. The 90’s is the new 80’s. Check out the Shell suits and videos from Ace of Base, Take That, Whitney, The Lighthouse Family and more.
Metal Anthems
You have all been screaming (sometimes literally!) for metal so we thought we would oblige. System of a Down, Godsmack, Marilyn Manson and Bullet for my Valentine feature among others.
Dizzee Rascal
You saw the interview, now delve into Dizzee’s head further the first ever VidZone Celebrity Playlist. Dizzee has exclusively chosen a selection of his all time favourite music videos. More acts coming soon.
Hot New Videos
Bored of old videos? Want fresh new videos from all your favourite artists? Thought so! This does exactly what it says in the title with videos from Chaka Khan, Freemasons, Grizzly Bear, Maximo Park and much much more!
As well as all these new playlists we have uploaded over 500 more videos, all of which will be available for your viewing pleasure when today’s update goes live this afternoon. These vary from country to country so we can’t give you the full lists but rest assured you will find more of the same great selection you’ve come to know and love!
Just a reminder that we LOVE to tweet with our users so if you fancy having your say or just chatting with the friendly VidZone team go to www.twitter.com/VidZone and start following us today!

Well done on VidZone its excellant and sit there watching music vids all day.
Just a little problem I’ve been having, when searching vid titles it automatically searches for beginning with “A” straight away which can take ages before you can change it to whatever letter you want. Is it possible to delay this a bit so we can change the letter before it automatically starts searching.
Everything else is wicked, so keep up the good work..

Thanks for the update. I love VidZone. This is such an awesome application and it’s great for the PS3. Even my Xbox-loving buddy was impressed.
The new playlists are great but can you implement / ask the devs to implement support for the official Sony Blu-ray remote control please? Using the dualshock 3 to control VidZone is really frustrating. Plus if you want to promote VidZone as a tool for parties, where anyone in the room can skip tracks and so on isn’t it better to support an intuitive interface provided by Sony’s blu-ray remote, rather than explaining to people the whole R1 L1, R1, L2 thing?
Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 1:05 pm by Ben Creasey
Hey reakt
You can use the Blu-Ray remote but you have to have it assigned to controller 1.
Go to Settings/Accessory Settings/Reassign Controllers then set the remote to controller 1.
Hope that helps

Bring it to Belgium! I suppose the rest of Europe is eagerly anticipating the coming of this great service. Please send updates asap on the status of the other territories, or perhaps just an indicator. You guys must know something. I’d be happy to know if VidZone is coming 09/09, or just in which quarter it’s comming to Belgium. Or for the other european countries.

Hey,
great to hear that the blu-ray remote is working
but what i would REALLY like to see is keyboard support…
it is a real PAIN to scroll through all the letters with the controller. so support for the sony keypad or any other keyboard would be really nice.

Looks good, but I would like more Dance/Electronic music videos in the future.
Keep up the good work ^^.

oh forgot to mention that… there is an easier way to change the controller number…
just start vidzone and push the PS-Button for 2 seconds -> go to controller settings and set the number. DONE
so you needn’t to go through all the menus
and i can confirm the remote is working
Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 1:21 pm by Ben Creasey
Hey Slatter666
Thanks for that.. i can confirm that that works also!

Can you add more Irih music?

I think VidZone’s great and I’m well impressed by the amount of content, but here’s a my list of improvements that I think would make it even better (sorry for repeats of other peoples)
1. Better playlist management. Even if just a simple “clear all” option added.
2. Normalisation of vid volume.
3. Searching. As another poster has noted, going into the search by track title will hang any further input as the program tries to find all tracks beginning with A right away. Change search to use the normal keypad input and also search within titles? It’s a pain having to put “the” to find artists like “the who”
4. Widescreen support of videos.
Cheers and keep up the good work.

do the featured playlists stay there forever or would I have to copy them to keep them in my own library??
Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 1:55 pm by Ben Creasey
Hi Kalel1981
I would suggest saving any of your favourite playlists as we can’t keep them up forever.

Hi Ben,
Any news on why there are no Warner Music artists on VidZone?
I would really like to see artists like Muse, Green Day Linkin Park and blink-182 on VidZone.
Great service thanks!

Any chance of the search feature being fixed in the near future? Annoying to not just be able to type it
Also, im just wondering why there’s no music by Linkin Park on the service even though on the download page for VidZone in the PS Store it says Linkin Park is Featured?

O and Also i rally don’t understand why you only have one video from Brandy when she has around about 10 video’s and yet you nearly have all of A*Teens music video’s up what up with that?
You don’t have Danity Kane or Day 26 on there ether.
Make’s me wonder how meny people are working on ur team and if you even listen to what we customers the people that use the service have to say at all.
Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 2:55 pm by Ben Creasey
Hi Black Canary
I can assure we do take everyone’s comments on board and are working hard to get you all the videos we can. The gaps in our catalogue is due to us still working with labels to license their content. We are signing labels all the time so keep checking back and hopefully we will have all the videos you want soon.
78
Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 2:48 pm by Damoedge
I emailed for Danity Kane but so far no response. Whilst I appreciate the the updates here I think it’s a bit crazy that certain updates will happen at certain places first. Why can’t the updates be kept in one place so people aren’t asking for the same thing over and over again.

Please, fix the AC/DC spelling mistake. The band appears as AB/CD! If it helps, I am using the Spanish version of VidZone.
Oh! And add some Blue Öyster Cult videos, please. I think they are from Sony BMG so theres no excuse here
Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 3:07 pm by Ben Creasey
Hi Lacri
AB/CD is actually a AC/DC tribute act
Don’t worry, a lot of people have made that mistake.
Thanks for the suggestions though.

Thanks for the reply Ben after explaining it i understand where you are coming from.
But please don’t do what Sony do when it comes to stuff that is Japanese, its like they don’t think anyone from the UK would want it or care about it at all and they are so wrong.
If you check out Youtube a lot of the UK listen to Japanese artist so please don’t follow there train of thought.
Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 3:11 pm by Ben Creasey
No problem
If you can suggest some artists (and even better, Labels) then we can go and try and license them. We arent experts in this type of music (we try our best though) so any help any of our users can give is appreciated.

Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 3:17 pm by BlackCanary
No Problem Ben I’ll do that.
What’s the best way for us to get in contact with you and your stuff when it comes to sending you that information?
Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 3:35 pm by Ben Creasey
Send the list to playstation@vidzone.tv and we will see what we can do

Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 3:19 pm by Apnomis
Thanks a lot for the reply Ben, I can’t believe I’ve been sat there going through each song one by one to add it to my custom playlist!!!! I never realised you could do the full Now Playing list, and I did try looking for a way!
I’ll be sure to give this a go when I get home, thanks again!

Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 3:29 pm by Qazcool
can you add the function to use a keyboard or even the online-keypad to type out letters when searching for songs. It just feels so sluggish the way it is now where you have to slowly scroll thru the letters one by one.

Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 3:30 pm by nemesisND1derboy
Seriously Ben,
SIGN WARNER MUSIC GROUP.
I NEED LINKIN PARK!!
ahem, sorry about that.
But in all seriousness, the people want Linkin Park. Give the people what they want Ben.
VidZone is brill, just needs to be expanded more.
Thanks

Vidzone has a great potential but:
-It needs to load faster when vidzone is launched from the XMB
-the custom settings like the volume of the menu sounds should be saved. I always have to turn them off whenever I launch vidzone
-Widescreen should be available at least as a user option. We have a HD console to play SD content…but cropping / zooming to a widescreen ratio can’t be that difficult.
-On french territory, Celine Dion has only one video available, but 20 are available under the name Céline Dion at the end of the C list…though this name is not searchable, since the accentuated letters are not supported. It would be cool to merge the contents and ignore the accents to make the search results more accurate.
-Volume normalization is certainly important too.
-Many artists are also featured in the vidzone…but no videos are associated to them. That would be something to fix!

Pleeeeease design a new way of searching!! Whoever thought that scrolling through letters was a good idea today needs a kick up the a*se!!

Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 3:48 pm by Anth1888
I agree we need a new way of searching its painfully annoying to do, just a simple text box would enhance VidZone alot.

Posted on 2 July, 2009 at 3:51 pm by qwertyuiopasdfgh
1) please allow us to use the wireless keypad to input the name of the band we want to search, the current method in which you press up or down to scroll through all the letters is too slow!
2) About japanese music, can you try to licence Ryuichi Sakamoto? Also what about Mark Knopfler (obviously not japanese)? And more Oasis, Pulp, Blur, etc. I’ll also give you an Italian artist’s name you could try to license: Cesare Cremonini.
Thanks! Vidzone rocks!

So do we have to set the remote port to 1 every time we want to use it with VidZone? Is this the only solution or are you actually going to fix it properly?

Excuse me, please could you make it that we can hear the music were playing and play a game at the same time, there was an artical some time ago that we would have this but it doesn’t look like it will come out. Just reply and tell me if it’s possible or not. Thank you.

Not being able to use the remote properly is a pain, let me use the play, pause, skip buttons.
Search is aweful, keyboard support please. The database sucks, why does the PS3 HDD churn like mad and lockup the playlist when searching for tracks? With a good indexed database the search should always return near instant.
Improve the video quality. I would ever prefer a little buffering if it got anywhere near close to DVD quality. Let me choose what target bitrate I want.
Why can’t I get 5.1 output? Or at least have a PCM stereo track for all videos!
My receiver supports DTS and Dolby Digital, VidZone only ever outputs Stereo PCM for some reason. You sacrificed overall quality to have 5.1 and I can’t experience that so at least let me experience the best of what I can, true PCM stereo not a downmix of a low bitrate 5.1 track. The ones that are only PCM stereo to begin with sound a thousand times better and Pro Logic 2 makes it surround anyway without using a horribly lossy codec.
VidZone seems to be about a quarter the resolution of a DVD using too low a bitrate and possibly even a poor codec. If its H264 the bitrate must be insanely low. If its not H264, why not? It should at least match YouTube MP4 quality.

One question though, David Reeves promised VidZone would work in game, will this be happening in the future? Not streaming videos, but just playing music.
