Hello everyone, my name is Dave Glanister and I’m the WipEout Fury Ship designer, here to give you a little insight into how we created the look of the ships.
Our main aim for the new WipEout Fury ships was to modernise their visual look whilst keeping the DNA of each existing individual team. On previous WipEout games, a key feature for ship design was its dynamic straight edge and triangular silhouette. For PSone and PSP this key element was the best way to achieve a great design without using a huge amount of polygons.
Our approach for the Fury ships was to keep the dynamic straight edge design but add to it by dividing the ships body panels up into three main layers. This new addition to the ships allowed us to overlap, interlock and weave the main ship panels together to achieve a more complex look.
By taking this approach it allowed the designs to show gaps, grooves and negative windows of space that were in-turn filled with real time PS3 self shadows. This made the ships appear lighter and more hover like without reducing the ships scale or bulk.
To evolve the designs further we replaced the nut and bolt element to the WipEout HD ships by building clean simplified inter-locking mechanical shapes. This suggested fewer components in the ships build. Also it gave the ships a tailor-made look and also suggested that the ships parts had been created with new and advanced material.
When viewing the ship design side on, the body panels have been purposely angled forwards to help create a dynamic appearance even when stationary. As a result the ship’s profile fights against the horizontal lines of the track’s surface which helps communicate the notion of an antigravity spacecraft.
To help identify the Fury ships within a race we added a second layer to the cockpit. This gives the impression of extra pilot protection. Well also placed a blue emissive tint to the cockpit glass which adds energy, notion of power and focal point to the core of every ship design.
That’s it from me! Hope you enjoyed reading about what I do
I understand that we’ll have another update for you on WipEout Fury next week by another member of the team here. In the meantime, have a great weekend.

Definitely the best PSN game so far!!
The graphics,the sounds are amazing!!
I can’t wait the expansion pack:)
I had a question about the Wipeout franchise.
Does the HD a spinoff or a brand new series in the wipeout era??

I love the design … i hope there will be new tracks too.
If the ships are made from “new technology”, why not add new weapons too ? that would make the game like fresh new ..

Could you guys please contact me? I found out how to abuse the glitch that caused many players to cheat on Zone Zeus. Also I know a method to figure out exactly who abused it!
Would be great if you would support the game by allowing us to help keep the leaderboards honest!

I continue to pledge my gaming soul to Studio Liverpool for the decades of awesome games their staff have developed.
Also, for those who complain that Wipeout HD is too hard, try completing Motorstorm Pacific Rift. I got all the trophies for HD in a month of playing yet 6 months on from getting Motorstorm and I haven’t completed the main campaign yet, it’s just too damn hard.

I have to say this: Wipeout HD is one of the best titles on the PS Store. It’s such a fantastic game. I’m really looking forward for this expansion.

I like the new models for the ships, but it does look a little bit fat when viewing from behind, maybe making it slimmer would be better?
Also I would recommend the following
Sandbox mode to have :
Custom Ship design (Taking parts to combine with eachother to create unique wipeout ships)
Custom racetracks design (To extend the lifetime of Wipeout HD)
See little big planet for example!
Otherwise you devs could include the tracks of Wipeout 2097/Wip3out SE in this or a later expansion.
I love the work you put into it.
Greetings

In a forum I have read that the actual Wipeout HD has a sort of barrel roll bug and effectively sometimes it fails. Is it true? And will be fixed?
And what about weapons, any changes?
In any case it will be mine day 1, no money better spent for months and months of fun!

Aggiungimi se ti va, ci facciamo qualche bella partitella!

Interesting to see how much consideration went into the placement of the surroundings alongside the tracks. You rarely read about the intricacies of environmental design in racing games.
A quick couple of questions (one of which has no chance of being answered, but hey, I tried
)
1) While I realise that time issues prevented the alternative HUDs from being modified for Fury, is there a chance at all that you might consider releasing an update or a piece of DLC to include them later down the line? While the visual design in Wipeout HD is gobsmackingly gorgeous, I can’t help but feel the subtlty of Wipeout 3’s HUD destroys the default and 2097 modes. Sure, they might contain nearly the same amount of information but 3 feels far less in your face about it.
2) Considering how much attention has been lavished on HD’s environments, and the fact that no other science fiction videogame looks like Wipeout to this day, have you ever thought about branching its world out into another genre? There’s so much variety and consistency to the landscape that I hardly doubt I’m the only player who’d love to explore more within an action adventure setting (particularly after playing Mirror’s Edge).
