Hello my name is Marcus Tanner, Art Director on WipEout Fury, and I’m here today to give you a brief insight into how a WipEout environment evolves from concept art to production geometry.
A WipEout track is set in a utopian environment populated by stunning, cutting edge architecture enhanced by contemporary graphic design. This aesthetic is created by designing architectural forms that are influenced by abstract sculpture, structure in art and science, futuristic architecture, mecha detailing and contemporary product design.
To create the WipEout aesthetic our concept artists use a fluid design process that involves creating abstract shapes in 3D and bouncing work around the team from artist to artist to evolve and clarify the designs. This results in bold, abstract 3D structures, which are rendered and painted over with architectural detailing and placed into the context of a WipEout environment.
These concept images use the structures as set pieces, trackside furniture, tunnels etc and give the production team an idea of how they would look in game:
The positioning of objects in a WipEout environment is created by a design process called Dynamic Composition. The results can be likened to a piece of music providing the track with a visual melody, rhythm and harmony. This process involves sectioning the environment along the track to provide the fundamental flow of shapes that creates an interesting rhythm for the player. It includes strategically adding set pieces which provide focus for the player and then populates the track to create an enhanced game experience. The result is a dynamic environment that emphasises the feeling of speed and movement as a result of the rhythmic pattern of structures around the track and also focuses the players’ attention on set pieces.
WipEout Fury is all about the use of bold structural shapes which define the architectural forms. These structures are oversized so they register with the player as they accelerate past at high speed and their striking shapes become associated as icons of each track. Interlocking modular shapes & overlaid layered surfaces make best use of the lighting by allowing shadows to play over the structures, and sunlight to glint through the gaps. This gives the impression of a highly complex and richly populated environment which is enhanced by the use of hyper-real gleaming hi-tech surfaces.
That’s it from me! But here’s Tony (Games Director) and Paul (Producer), after the jump, with answers to some of your questions from the WipEout Fury ship update last week.
Hello everyone,
Myself and the WipEout team have noticed that you guys have a lot of questions about the forthcoming WipEout HD expansion pack, Fury. Here are the answers to the questions that we are currently able to answer.
Suzzopher: “Any idea on a launch date?”
A lot of people have asked us this and it’s lovely to hear that people are so keen to play Fury. I am happy to say that it is in the final phase of QA testing at the moment. Once this is completed we will be in a position to announce the release date here on the PlayStation Blog.JacktehKnife: “I was wondering if they plan to introduce Home Game Launching in the future?”
Yes, we are looking into adding in Home Game Launching. We will have more news on this in the near future.Brave9zero: “Will the new add-on modes (Zone Battle ETC) be playable in Split-screen?”
Hi Brave9zero. Of the three new game modes only Detonator is single player only. Zone Battle and Eliminator are tremendous fun in multiplayer both online and in split-screen. We routinely play Eliminator mode here in the studio just for fun. The carnage is unbelievable especially now that players can turn their ship around and attack opponents head-on. You’re going to love it.Apolloeye: “With the new cockpit designs will you still be able to see the pilot in photo mode?”
Yes you will be able to check out the pilots using photo mode. We’re looking forward to seeing the shots you all take.koolkid201: “Will there be any new HUDS coming with Fury?”
There are new HUDs for the new game modes. We had to design these from the ground up to ensure that the pertinent information is relayed to the player clearly. These HUDs are always used in the new modes regardless of which of the HUDs you have selected in the options. The reason for this is that it takes a lot of graphic design work, implementation and many, many iterations to get a HUD right. We simply didn’t have the time to make new game mode HUDs for the existing HUD themes nor did we have time to create any new cross-mode HUDs like those in the original release of HD.silvio6silvio6: “If the ships are made from “new technology”, why not add new weapons too?”
We would have loved to have added new weaponry but the difficulty with doing this is that it would have unbalanced the game play. When developing a Wipeout game, perhaps the trickiest aspect to get right is the difficulty balancing. By its nature when you add randomly picked up weaponry to a race pretty much anything can happen and trying to make the game fair to the player while maintaining a challenging difficulty curve is very tricky indeed. Our design teams do amazing work in this area. So, if we had added new weapons to the new ships existing races would have been thrown out of whack, especially for people racing in the older ships.- Paul & Tony

I can’t wait to get this have been with wipeout since PS launch and it never disappointed (hmm fusion still not sure about that one lol), its great for the support this game is getting.
I do have one quick question though, is there any chance of getting the voice communication fixed to the point of being usable, even just in the lobby?
Many thanks and again a big plus for this wonderful game!

Wow, great post and great replies! I’m so glad you wrote to post #14 that you’ve taken care of the zone zeus glitch, and are taking care of the leaderboards!
Just one more question about this subject:
Is there a way for you to remove the zonezeus trophies from players that glitched there way to it? (Would be awesome to see this is a rare trophy again)

Yes! I have been waiting for this update since launch and it looks amazing, big Wipeout fan here. Wipeout HD to me is actually the best game on PSN, in terms of scope and value and its nice to see you guys supporting it. Zone battle looks amazing and I cant wait. You guys didn’t mention anything on price in the above questions, so are there any indications?
Thanks Studio Liverpool.

Hi dear Wipeout Team! I love Wipeout and its philosophy, its style – it’s one of the best consolebrands ever made!
The concept arts look fantastic! You get almost a feeling like there is an entire living world around Wipeout.
I know what I’m saying now is rather impossible, but, imagine an RPG/racing game in this world! Play as a pilot of one of the racing teams, an global or intergalactic political conspiracy or whatsoever – race, evolve your ship, your charakter, your racing team! Solve different mysteries; get kidnapped and build an improvised ship with help from found parts and escape with valuable information, which will help save the galaxy!
I know there is a problem with the brand, but I guess smart marketing moves could solve this problem
The Wipeout world you’ve created is simply fantastic with a lot of potential! This could be a great experience!
And as said before by other fans – thank you for this wonderful game!

Tony mentioned that there will be six new music tracks with Fury lastmight. Any chance that we will maybe see some CoLD SToRAGE on the WipEout HD playlist in the future?

I love this stuff, I wish more developers would release the conceptual work that they create when designing a game. Wipeout has always been stunning and I thought the departure of the Designers Republic would bring about the end of its style, glad to say its still very much alive. Any chance of making this downloadable to the game?

Hi and thanks for these insights into the ship and track designs.
ok,I do like Wipeout HD,I think it’s got a lot going for it,but I have one issue and thats the design of the tracks.Being a F-zero GX fan (still play it) will these new tracks be a little wilder?
I know the series is grounded in a “future reality” sort of way,but I found the tracks slightly tame after GX.I wondered if (nearly called you Psygnosis) the team at studio Liverpool had considered going wild and doing a few out there levels, like inside/ontop of a pipe or a section were you can chain link boosts whilst the track goes through 360° on it’s x axis?

The game is to hard for me and because of that it is frustrating and I’m not playing it anymore…

Hello Marcus, Tony and Paul. Thank you for this effort bringing us this quality info about the product. It’s nice that now with the EU Blog we’re more in touch with all of you from Studio Liverpool. This architectural design has impressed me a lot.
In the game most of us always have a little problem with the headset audio function. I’ve messaged many of the headset users I’ve seen, and also asked a few colleagues from forums: all of them share the problem too (most of them have the official SONY headset, few ones used a third party one). It’s just that.. lets say 85% of the times someone uses a headset the audio quality is bad and with many cuts, or receiving each word double. And while playing it’s hard to understand each other due to the lack of headset audio controls in the setup screen. If you want to hear others better, you’ve not a singular headset volume in the config., it’s mixed with the effects too.

The idea of a button to open/close the audio is pretty nice (although it gets a little delay from the moment you press the button until you should talk). But I would like to know if you’re planning to add something in a patch to solve the problem with this audio. People are avoiding the use of the headset in the game because of this. Most of us use the text chat throught the XMB to bypass this, implying screen changes on critical moments before the online match start and consequently, screen freezes in Playstation 3.
Best regards,
Aero-R
NOTE: Excuse the use of two comments but I wanted to explain this properly.

I have a question, if I host a tournament will I be able to mix the game modes? Maybe have a few Zone Battles some Eliminator and a couple normal races in there?
And thanks for the blogs, keep up the good work!
Posted on 9 July, 2009 at 4:24 pm by Paul Tweedle
Hi akirapill,
That is an excellent idea. We did think about mixing and matching race types but, in Fury, Tournaments will all be standard races.
Thanks,
Paul.

Thanks for answering. I apologise for using the word gimmick. Was maybe the wrong word to use, though I still don’t like rolls lol. I know you put alot of thought into everything wipeout, and it’s very much appreciated. Loved and played all the wipeout games for many years. Any thoughts on using ps camera to take mugshots, etc?

I really like hearing from development teams who are so passionate about their product. You can really gain a sense that the final product will be well worth waiting for. The original WipEout HD still is one of the best downloadable titles out there and I’m sure Fury can stand up there with it.

Since Fury is nearly a new overhall when it comes to graphics and textures, how will you keep original wipeout hd tracks to look as fresh as the new fury ones.
Posted on 13 July, 2009 at 2:47 pm by Marcus Tanner
Hi AZanshin
You`re right, the Fury’s architecture and ship designs have evolved from the original HD game which gives Fury a distinctive cutting edge aesthetic.
However, as a result of developing the designs of the original game the Fury pack we have achieved continuity with the look of HD.
Thanks
Marcus

One more quick question, will we be able to mix songs on our own playlists with those already available with the game. I would love to include WipEout HD’s music tracks with my own while racing. Especially with that great Noisia tune from the Fury trailer.
Posted on 10 July, 2009 at 11:53 am by Paul Tweedle
Hi JamboGT,
That is a good idea but, no I’m afraid not. You can either choose the WipEout music or a created playlist. Sorry.
Thanks,
Paul.

A few questions (one of which has no chance of being answered, but hey, I tried
)
1) While I realise that time issues prevented the alternative HUDs from being modified for Fury, is there a chance that you might consider releasing an update to include them later down the line? While the visual design in HD is gorgeous, I can’t help but feel the subtlty of Wipeout 3’s HUD feels makes it feel less in your face about the information it presents.
2) Considering how much attention has been lavished on HD’s environments, and the fact that it still posesses a unique style compared to most videogames, have you ever thought about branching its world out into another genre? There’s so much variety to the landscape that I hardly doubt I’m the only player who’d love to explore more within an action adventure setting (particularly after playing Mirror’s Edge).
3) Aren’t you concerned that the stat increases to Fury’s new ships might unbalance the game with regards to the original craft? I believe the improvements are supposed to be small it runs a risk of alienating vanilla HD when it comes to time trials.
(Apologies for the double post, mods. Some of this appeared on the ship design blog yesterday by mistake post-login)

Hi Concepting,
I’ll tackle your questions.
1. The HUD thing I don’t think will be an issue. The three new modes have their own distinct HUDs which work well and shoe-horning them into the WO3 or 2097 style would have taken a long time to develop and test and might not have even worked. You’ll see when you see them just how specific to the modes they are. Also, it’s not like they’re in the same style per se as the HD HUD either. They are pretty much their own thing(s).
2. It’s certainly an interesting idea to explore the WipEout Universe in other genres but nothing is planned at the moment.
3. I understand the concerns about the stat increases but they’re so minor that they don’t make that much of a difference in race. The old ships can still hold their own. When you’ve played it, let us know if you agree.
Thanks,
Paul.

Hi, Paul & Marcus.
You know you made one of the best games ever with WipEout HD, so I’ll get right to my question. It’s regarding WipEout environments : why so many artificial settings compared to natural ones ? In HD, 6 tracks out of 8 are in an urban environment. A lot of players have fond memories of the endless plains, forests or deserts in the previous titles. Will nature make a come-back in the future ?
Posted on 13 July, 2009 at 2:55 pm by Marcus Tanner
Hi armorvil
We love cutting edge, futuristic architecture
Natural environments are cool too but we there`s more scope to legitamising crazy shapes with man made structures.
If we tried the same thing with landscapes the tracks would start looking like they were set on an alien world.
cheers

Hey Paul&Marcus,
WipEout Fury trophies have been uploaded, so the DLC is coming…but when ?
Top secret, huh ?
Thanks guys.

Cheers for the answers Paul. : )
My main concern with the stat increases is that it might skew online time trials towards Fury’s craft if it means laptimes are permanently reduced using them, but knowing the Wipeout crowd, I’m sure that’ll just encourage some players to try and eke out as much performance from the original craft as they can to match them. Aesthetically speaking, I prefer the look of the Fury craft.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing all your thoughts and ideas about design and gameplay. This is so rare nowadays, I have read all of it, and bought WipeOut HD one week ago. I love it !
One question: could you, one day, add Motion Control ? This would be awesome with a game like Wipeout …
Iam thinking about a future update, as this would need tweaking/testing I guess.
Cheers.

@78 There is motion control in Wipeout HD, you can turn motion control on/off in the settings so you can drive/fly/hover only with the use of the motion control.
Hope it helps a bit.

WipEou t Fury Dated
By Peter C [ColossalBlue], Site Editor
We’re pretty excited about the upcoming WipEout HD DLC. You might have noticed, we talk about it whenever we get a chance. Well, thanks to the wonders of Twitter and a bloke called JamboGT (not even sure if he’s on TSA) We’ve got another excuse to talk about it. Excitingly we’re getting to tell you that it has an official Sony release date. OK so for the time being it’s only on the official Hong Kong site but we really can’t imagine Hong kong getting the content and the rest of the world being denied it.
The date to mark on your calenders is July 24th 2009. Which is soon, hurrah!

Hi, not sure if this is a bug or intended to make the Bling Brigade trophy easier to get, but it seems that the Fury ships count. I just organised a race, 7 of us had the chrome skins and one guy was confused and had not even unlocked the skin yet, on the third race he used a Fury ship and we all got the trophy. Should probably be fixed as it kinda sucks for all the players who worked hard to get that trophy I guess?
