Hi everyone,
My name is Angela Madronero and I’m the European PlayStation Store Manager. For a while now, we’ve seen a number of recurring questions about the PlayStation Store appearing on the blog. Many of the questions can’t be covered in the weekly PlayStation Store update; therefore, I wanted to take this opportunity to respond to some of the most frequently asked questions.
How has the European PlayStation Store grown since its launch? Are there any plans to increase the reach of the store further?
The first thing to say is that the “European” PlayStation Store is also available in non-European countries. Basically, the countries that make up the SCEE region (which historically operated the PAL TV system) all come under the banner of Europe. For the purposes of this blog I’ll continue to call it the European Store, which operates alongside our sister stores in servicing American, Japanese and Asian markets.
We have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages. As you can imagine, it takes a significant amount of coordination and operational support to maintain our existing stores; however, our current list of countries is by no means final. We are definitely interested in further geographic expansion of the PlayStation Store.
The PlayStation Store is a commercial enterprise; therefore, we need to prioritise the roll-out of additional stores by reviewing a country’s PLAYSTATION 3 installed base, broadband penetration and e-commerce environment. These reviews are completed on a case-by-case basis. Ultimately, the roll-out of additional countries needs to make commercial sense.
What improvements have been made to the PlayStation Store since launch?
Those people who have been using PS Store since 2007 will have seen many changes in such a relatively short space of time. The changes are usually made in response to user comments, or to improve operational efficiency.
From a user point of view, over the course of two years we’ve:
- Re-launched the PS3 store with a significantly improved layout and design using a native PS3 technology rather than the original browser-based store. This dramatically improved the speed performance and provided a richer graphical experience. We were also able to configure the same store design to both High-definition and Standard-definition TV.
- Implemented an ‘A-Z’ search section throughout all stores.
- Rolled-out a ‘Preview Button’ for sneak peeks at content.
- Launched the PSP Store and made PSP content available via the PC (Media Go).
Our most recent updates include:
- Design refresh
- Search functionality within English language stores; roll-out across non-English language stores to follow
- Additional rotating advertising slots in order to highlight new content
Why is the navigation different across different regions?
There are times when different regions choose slightly different navigation flows or ways to reach content. Basically this choice is a reflection of the type and quantity of content on offer, as well as the differing operational requirements of each store.
Clearly with so many stores in so many different languages, there are some unique operational and consumer facing requirements for the European Store, but our basic approach is to provide navigation that allows users access to content in the quickest time and with the least number of clicks.
In order to ensure the best user experience, we conduct surveys and user tests to analyse the ways in which consumers access content. These tests are completed in many countries in order to make sure that all requirements are captured and considered before the final decisions are made.
We have been asked whether it would be possible to have a demo category that allows for direct entry to demos from the Store Top (home page). Research to date has shown that the download figures for demos in the US Store and the European Store are very similar, so it seems that most visitors to the European Store are able find demos easily in whichever store they visit. For this reason we are not planning to change the placement of demos in the store; instead we are concentrating our efforts on changing the navigation flow in some other ways.
Why is there different content on the European Store from the US and Japanese stores?
This question often gets asked. In fact, all Stores have different content depending on their local markets. We are committed to working very hard to ensure that our first-party content (the games created by our own Sony Computer Entertainment development teams) is published across all the PlayStation-Stores, simultaneously. We know how important this is to you, and I hope that you’ve seen an improvement in synchronised, worldwide releases over the past six months.
Why is there a difference in third party content?
The decision about whether and when to release a game for sale is in the hands of the individual publisher (companies like Capcom, EA, Konami, Ubisoft, etc.).
In the same way that the publisher decides when to launch the disc version of a game, they also decide if and when PlayStation Network content is made available.
There are many reasons why our third party partners may not be able to launch content in one region on a particular time/date; this may be due to technical glitches, digital rights issues, localisation requirements etc. So the issues are a little more complex than may first appear.
We know that there is a lot of frustration when content is released on one store but not another. I can confirm that from a PlayStation Store point of view, we are committed to supporting our third party partners in bringing as much content as possible to the European Store.
In addition to accepting credit cards, the US allows you to use pre-paid cards within the PlayStation-Store. Will we be getting a pre-paid cards system and, if so, when?
This is something we’re definitely looking into for European Store users. I can’t give you any further information at the moment but I can assure everyone that we will be bringing you more news in the not too distant future, so please hang in there!
When will Europe get a video and music download service?
We recently launched VidZone – a great EU first, free of charge music video streaming service. We have received very positive feedback and are thrilled with its successful launch, with over 1 million downloads in less than 8 weeks.
At Games Convention in August last year, we announced that we had a long-term plan to launch a video on demand service for some countries in the SCEE region. This is still our plan, and as soon as we have all the details locked down, one of my colleagues who is working on the programme will give you an update on when and what will be available.
I hope that answers some of your immediate questions. Keep the comments and feedback coming, and I look forward to updating you as and when I have more information to share.

@102, it doesn’t have to be the biggest games, or even PS3 exclusives. A wide selection of multiplat games for download would be nice.

If PS2-titles were offered as downloadable (and playable) I would buy for at least €100 1st day …
Please see that as a hint

My comment ahead was not commented by Angela. I know, not all posts can be answered. But it will be nice for me, if you say some words about german store. Thereby I now, that Sony knows about our situation. And I can say, all germans are really steamed up about it.

The only way to agree on a store layout would be to allow the user to customize it and choose the categories relevant to them.
This would be very simple to implement.

@102
Gimme a break, of course it would work.
HDD upgrades are dirt cheap for PS3 users. ALOT cheaper then Microsofts propriaty drives that cost £100.
Games like MGS4 are an exception, not a rule. InFamous came in at 9GB. Thats nothing on a ps3 with an upgraded 300-500GB drive.
3rd party games are not much bigger on the PS3 then on the 360
If Microsoft can do it, Sony certainly can, don’t make excuses for them please.

I’m sick of being treated like a backwater entity by SCEE.
Sony is creating rifts between regions when it should be worried about the threats it’s competitors pose.
We want a unified system for ALL PS3 owners!
I don’t want to jump ship but Sony repeatedly test the loyalty of their fans/customers…

@110
It’s download times and the knock-on affects like that on current Broadband systems that would be the next biggest problem.
I’m not sure what broadband infrastructure is like for you in Sweden but a lot of places including UK just couldn’t handle downloads of 9GB-35GB very well.

Good job with the PS Store, you really do a great job. I work for an international business system software and I know how complex can be the localitation of a product and everything that involves,
Thank you for caring about my little language Swedish! ONLY SONY cares of all the 3!

I understand the motives behind the existence of this blog, but it’s starting to feel as if it’s actually being counterproductive. SCEE in comparison to SCEA is just so slow, vague and not forthcoming with details that it only serves to enrage the fanbase.
Add to that the outrageous conversion rates, the fact that try as you might, we still do not properly see or feel improvements since you lag behind in all respects and it’s easy to see how such a blog entry leaves us feeling empty as usual.
I’m sorry my comment is so negative, but as an european I am fed up with the 2nd class treatment we have received since ever, basically. Nowadays we shall not settle for anything less than equality .

Let me just chime in by saying that contrary to what seems to be many (vocal) people here, I don’t really need a separate demos section.
I look through the ‘what’s new’ section regularly (in addition to reading the updates here @ PS.Blog), and the other things there are IMO just as important as the demos. Frankly, I don’t play demos very often, usually I look at gameplay videos and reviews. If I’m interested in a specific game, I’d also rather have all game-specific items rather than just the demo for it.
Only use in a demo-section I could see is for people who just got their PS3 and want to download a whole bunch of demos. Meh, I’d rather spend my time playing full games
.
So, although I wouldn’t really mind if either, if the Playstation Store Europe teams don’t want another category, that’s fine by me.

omg… I lol’ed.. hard.. at the excuse of not having a “Demo” section on the frontpage for the Euro store….was that statement ment to be taken serious ?
People like to try out games before buying them – so why isnt it obvious to have a category with that instead of hiding it….When SCEE state that they have done research that many people still finds them, but what about those who might not find it, and again what is the reason not to have it, besides “But people still finds them”–<lol
But thanks to SCEE for taking the time to explaning themselves

Not that I am annoyed with you (or anything similar), in-fact I am very happy with the service we get and would like to congratulate you. Either way, I have some comments.
First-
One of your questions mentions about when third-party content arrives on the store. You say that these other companies choose when the content will arrive, yet I have heard the developers of Trine have had the game with sony or ages and are waiting for it to be released. This is not the only situation like this.
Second-
My main issue with the stores is as follows. I wish the world had a single store. Choose your language/currency in the ps3 settings, then be able to access any content from anywhere. I know that seems very hard, but many pc games can be bought world-wide. I do understand if it’s not possible.
As for now, I will just ask another question.
This video store that will be announced, will we start with all the content the US store has, or due to copyright issues, will we have to start from a small library.

no real important question is mentioned in this post.
no details on the German Store & the missing 18 content. where r they? thousands of over 18 year old people ask after them.
this one is mentioned in the post bu:No Information about the Video Stream Service that was announced before with big words…Why has the US thousands of TV Shows & Series in HD and whats the Problem about bringing the same Service in Europe. how long will it take to bring it on.
The prize situation: why do Sony charge us europeans sometimes more than the US 14,99$ aren´t 14,99€… this is a rip off that is made too often
Sale offers: why r in the US more Sale offers made than here in the EU? there were springsale, summersale, the last was not many weeks ago where hits been selled 50% off.
where is the european version of Quore???? i don´t think its sooooo hard to get it published here…. we don´t even have PULSE…
these r the important wuestions we want to get answered…not the boring stuff you told us up there. Improvements & repolish are ok but not worth a QA.
Regards Samarotu

“Angela Madronero and I’m the European PlayStation Store Manager”
are you sure you should let all the annoying Store whiners know this?
keep on giving us the weekly updates, there’s usually something worth downloading, be it a video or wallpaper at least, sometimes we get sweet DLC for a favorite game, like Fallout 3, oh sorry -haha-

Most of sweden have at least 10mbit/s.
I have 30 Mbit/s with option of faster speeds if I choose to pay more.
I pay about €25 for my internet connection each month
Several cities have up to 100 mbit/s.
People with a PS3 usually have the common sense to also have a good connection.

so you want everything on the video store from america that has so far, it won’t happen, it will be a mixture for example in england we will have tv shows what we get i.e. top gear, life on mars, only fools and horses for example plus some american shows like friends, dollhouse, true blood etc, in sweden for example they will have their own content, same for germany, italy, ireland, spain and so on, us got the store straight away because they had distribution deals already in place

the problem i have with these answers, is they are generic, those are not the most FAQ, those are “catagory brackets” that you are using to group actual questions.
what about the actual faq’s. time scales, just tell it to us straight we can handle it.
whens it coming out… no plans at this time sorry.
where is metal gear. konami say go play hide and **** yourself.
we can take it, just tell us the truth. stop beating around the bush. and do not even reply with a “we are going fast blah blah blah.” unless your given me straight up answers dont bother coz were all getting sick to death!

You say “we announced that we had a long-term plan to launch a video on demand service for some countries in the SCEE region”. Well, what was actually said was that it would be launched “next year” (2009). I assume if that was still the case you would of said so?

Could we please have a better backup facility for game saves?
More and more people are experiencing broken consoles after 12 months – it’s obvious by just looking at forums so can’t be denied.
Currently we either have to do a full backup of the console which is hard if you don’t have a large enough external media, or we have to go through every single game and click copy. Can’t we have a ‘Copy All’ feature?
Also, some games don’t allow to be copied – Fight Night Round 4 for example. What’s the procedure if our console breaks and we were unable to backup these games? We have to replay the game again?? What’s the point in the hard drive then?

@Post 132
Thank you SO much for mentioning this. I just had the YLOD, and flat out refuse to pay £150 repair fee. So p***** off that my saves are gone. I’m not paying that sorta money to NOT get my saves back. No way. Oblivion, wtf???
On another note…
‘At Games Convention in August last year, we announced that we had a long-term plan to launch a video on demand service for some countries in the SCEE region. This is still our plan’
At last, we can get some honesty from a company about what to/what not to look forward to. Saying that, there MUST be some big update coming soon to do with avatars, surely. People have been asking for too long for such a simple thing.

Ok some poinst:
1. What is this talk about localization?
Why should I have to wait for the patch of Fat Princess when my PS3 is set to English, the game I play is in English! Why should I wait for the German and French versions?
2. VidZone?
3. Qore? Why not release this in Europe (again I live in Sweden, we ALL understand English here so no need to localize). The work is already done in the US, why not use it for subscriptions here too?
4. Pulse, also not present here in Europe, again SCREW LOCALIZATION!
5. SCEE is slow as hell on getting things out. Eg. the Fat Princess patch, did it change any text strings? No? Then just test the connectivity and be done with it.
The only game that I own that has done localization right is Uncharted. I could select different language for speech and text and game interface, it was wonderfull!

Speaking as a Australian this FAQ doesn’t make me feel any better I’m sorry.
I still see no reason whatsoever why we should be under the banner of the European region to begin with, in terms of language, and other factors, we are far more closer to America.
The internet is supposed to breakdown global barriers, not put up more.
The localization issues just plain do not and should not apply to Australia, We should be getting releases either simultaneously or very soon after America does, that goes for home as well.
The ps3 has seen some great success of late in Australia, we now need the support from Sony SCEE/A/S whatever.
I’m sorry, it’s tough love, but we just want our content which should be available to us, reasons can only go so far as to why we don’t have the Uncharted space, why we don’t have Metal Gear Solid, why we don’t have a video store. Yes it’s hard coordinating with so many territories, yes we understand, but the fact is, we’re paying for a product, with expectations of various things being delivered and supported.

@137: You are aware that there has been fifty other posters lambasting Sony for not refusing developers to release games in the US without also at the same time releasing them all over Europe, in order to force developers to support the whole world equally. Not saying I personally care either way, but this do exemplify why Sony simply can not please everyone here.
If Sony did start demanding global synchronized releases, everyone in English speaking countries would complain that the games got earlier releases on other consoles. And if they keep their current strategy, everyone in the SCEE region complaines about getting games later than other regions

Hello Angela,
When is the Playstation Network going to be available for other PAL SCEE countries.
I’m talking about the basic feature of the PSN, not the Playstation Store. Some countries don’t have the Store, like Romania, Cyprus and Bulgaria. However many PS3 customers in other PAL SCEE countries don’t even have access to the basic features of the Playstation Network for example North Africa (Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, etc…) and Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia etc…)
WHY IS THE PSN NOT AVAILABLE IN THESE COUNTRIES EVEN IF THEY ARE SCEE PAL TERRITORIES ?
WHEN IS PSN GOING TO BE AVAILABLE IN THE AFOREMENTIONED COUNTRIES ?

Sorry but it’s hilarious to read “our basic approach is to provide navigation that allows users access to content in the quickest time and with the least number of clicks.” You can put everything in one place and it will be one click away… Sorry but demos and full downloadable games in one “basket” simply doesn’t work. If the game is new title and you know what you are looking for it’s OK. But from time to time I’d like to simply see ale FULL PSN games to choose something but it’s tedious as demos:full games ratio is very high.

Sure, downloading 9GB would be painful on your average 4Mbit broadband connection, but not impossible by any means.
Bandwidth caps and increases in speed will only come when the ISPs are FORCED to change, because people require the faster connections and larger download caps. If we instead adjust our usage around their businesses models, they will continue to give us slow speeds and small download caps.

I would proffer to use a service like PayPoint then buying topup cards.
As then I would be able to go to any shop that has PayPoint and then buy a topup. If it was a PSN topup by cards it would only sold few shops more likely in Town centres that would have a habit of not stocking them.

What about countries without PS Store? I’m working for the distributor in Croatia where the word “console” means only “PlayStation”. PS is almost 100% of console market but no Store for us..

“Demo Section” for the store…
Think of the demos as milk at your grocery store. Everybody goes to the grocery store to buy milk, and everybody has to walk buy hundreds of other items to get to the milk. That isn’t an accident! If the milk was at the front of the store, you may not be exposed to the hundreds of other items the store has available to buy.
Same with demos!
