Hi everyone,
My name is Angela Madronero and I’m the European PlayStation Store Manager. For a while now, we’ve seen a number of recurring questions about the PlayStation Store appearing on the blog. Many of the questions can’t be covered in the weekly PlayStation Store update; therefore, I wanted to take this opportunity to respond to some of the most frequently asked questions.
How has the European PlayStation Store grown since its launch? Are there any plans to increase the reach of the store further?
The first thing to say is that the “European” PlayStation Store is also available in non-European countries. Basically, the countries that make up the SCEE region (which historically operated the PAL TV system) all come under the banner of Europe. For the purposes of this blog I’ll continue to call it the European Store, which operates alongside our sister stores in servicing American, Japanese and Asian markets.
We have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages. As you can imagine, it takes a significant amount of coordination and operational support to maintain our existing stores; however, our current list of countries is by no means final. We are definitely interested in further geographic expansion of the PlayStation Store.
The PlayStation Store is a commercial enterprise; therefore, we need to prioritise the roll-out of additional stores by reviewing a country’s PLAYSTATION 3 installed base, broadband penetration and e-commerce environment. These reviews are completed on a case-by-case basis. Ultimately, the roll-out of additional countries needs to make commercial sense.
What improvements have been made to the PlayStation Store since launch?
Those people who have been using PS Store since 2007 will have seen many changes in such a relatively short space of time. The changes are usually made in response to user comments, or to improve operational efficiency.
From a user point of view, over the course of two years we’ve:
- Re-launched the PS3 store with a significantly improved layout and design using a native PS3 technology rather than the original browser-based store. This dramatically improved the speed performance and provided a richer graphical experience. We were also able to configure the same store design to both High-definition and Standard-definition TV.
- Implemented an ‘A-Z’ search section throughout all stores.
- Rolled-out a ‘Preview Button’ for sneak peeks at content.
- Launched the PSP Store and made PSP content available via the PC (Media Go).
Our most recent updates include:
- Design refresh
- Search functionality within English language stores; roll-out across non-English language stores to follow
- Additional rotating advertising slots in order to highlight new content
Why is the navigation different across different regions?
There are times when different regions choose slightly different navigation flows or ways to reach content. Basically this choice is a reflection of the type and quantity of content on offer, as well as the differing operational requirements of each store.
Clearly with so many stores in so many different languages, there are some unique operational and consumer facing requirements for the European Store, but our basic approach is to provide navigation that allows users access to content in the quickest time and with the least number of clicks.
In order to ensure the best user experience, we conduct surveys and user tests to analyse the ways in which consumers access content. These tests are completed in many countries in order to make sure that all requirements are captured and considered before the final decisions are made.
We have been asked whether it would be possible to have a demo category that allows for direct entry to demos from the Store Top (home page). Research to date has shown that the download figures for demos in the US Store and the European Store are very similar, so it seems that most visitors to the European Store are able find demos easily in whichever store they visit. For this reason we are not planning to change the placement of demos in the store; instead we are concentrating our efforts on changing the navigation flow in some other ways.
Why is there different content on the European Store from the US and Japanese stores?
This question often gets asked. In fact, all Stores have different content depending on their local markets. We are committed to working very hard to ensure that our first-party content (the games created by our own Sony Computer Entertainment development teams) is published across all the PlayStation-Stores, simultaneously. We know how important this is to you, and I hope that you’ve seen an improvement in synchronised, worldwide releases over the past six months.
Why is there a difference in third party content?
The decision about whether and when to release a game for sale is in the hands of the individual publisher (companies like Capcom, EA, Konami, Ubisoft, etc.).
In the same way that the publisher decides when to launch the disc version of a game, they also decide if and when PlayStation Network content is made available.
There are many reasons why our third party partners may not be able to launch content in one region on a particular time/date; this may be due to technical glitches, digital rights issues, localisation requirements etc. So the issues are a little more complex than may first appear.
We know that there is a lot of frustration when content is released on one store but not another. I can confirm that from a PlayStation Store point of view, we are committed to supporting our third party partners in bringing as much content as possible to the European Store.
In addition to accepting credit cards, the US allows you to use pre-paid cards within the PlayStation-Store. Will we be getting a pre-paid cards system and, if so, when?
This is something we’re definitely looking into for European Store users. I can’t give you any further information at the moment but I can assure everyone that we will be bringing you more news in the not too distant future, so please hang in there!
When will Europe get a video and music download service?
We recently launched VidZone – a great EU first, free of charge music video streaming service. We have received very positive feedback and are thrilled with its successful launch, with over 1 million downloads in less than 8 weeks.
At Games Convention in August last year, we announced that we had a long-term plan to launch a video on demand service for some countries in the SCEE region. This is still our plan, and as soon as we have all the details locked down, one of my colleagues who is working on the programme will give you an update on when and what will be available.
I hope that answers some of your immediate questions. Keep the comments and feedback coming, and I look forward to updating you as and when I have more information to share.

Just to ask when we Europeans are going to get these great PSOne Classics?
Front Mission 3
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil-series
Suikoden
Wild Arms
It would be great if we could get few great games that were never released in europe. (For example Xenogears and Wild Arms 2.)
Also is there possibility that at some point we could get Parasite Eve and Suikoden 2?
Personally, the one I miss most is Suikoden.
Have a nice day!

Hello,
I’m coming from one of the countries where there is no store at all. I have “abused” a made up Hong Kong account to buy some games, but I really do not have the patience for this anymore. Not to mention that if a company wants to get my money it should fight for it and not the other way around.
What I really do not understand is that in this century Sony is using old and obsolete models.
E.g. if several countries are not feasible as stores, why not put them in one “alternative” (name it whatever you like) store in english where the different distributors get paid depend from what account (which country) the transaction has been made (in my opinion this should’ve been made for the whole world, you know there are websites that already manage things like different languages (it is possible to have a “select you language” menu), currencies (not to mention that banks *really* manage to debit/convert foreign currencies) et al, these things sound like rocket science when I hear the comments from Sony about their store blunder).
I could write for hours, but I fail to see that there is any will to change, this is more of a fix a bit here and there and calm the customers show…
Thank you for your time.

I appreciate that you have a lot of laws & languages to contend with, but can we please get some more avatars. I guess i’ll be paying close attention to GamesCon for more info on the infamous Vid store.

I am from Slovenia (EU) and we don’t have our own PS store and we can’t use our creditcards (Mastercard, Visa…) in UK PS store plus, we can’t access Vidzone since it’s IP locked. Is there any hope for us?

This is bull! It’s just excuses and hand wriging to buy time, make it look like they’ve given us what we want. If you want PSN Cards, tell them, keep telling them. When they do official posts like this, just comment with a (reasonable) list of what you want. It’s only by making noise they’ll see they have to deliver. It’s not good enough. It may the most powerful console, but its dowload service is the weakest. And its only by making them see they have to deliver they will. The PSN Revolution starts here!

Hi Angela,
about what’s great:
Vidzone is great.
Your tips about some GamesCom annoucements are quite interesting (not to say entertaining): video store and psn card
about your post:
Thanks for those economic, corporate, deal with other company precisions (that are quite obvious and presented with a so corporate language -isn’t the ps blog an advertising and marketing blog?-)
about region and opposite strategy for almost (material and immaterial) identical content (game and video):
It’s clear that it requires lots of work to assure quality release over so many countries (with high cultural differences in some case) and even if Mike stated that he won’t explain why the ps store is contry locked; I’m still asking myself why 90% of blu-ray movies aren’t, why PS3 games are region-free (even better, they can’t be region-locked), but still downloadable content which is the easiest thing to distribute worldwide is country-locked (a first in term of geographical limitition in videogame). So, WHY?
I’ll pay a premium tax to download from other store through my EU PSN id (like 10% tax on each purchase outside my store).

Posted on 12 August, 2009 at 1:13 am by Sambuque
About a statement that needed lots of costly research in many countries:
Your statistics just prove that EU store visitors are smarter cause they don’t need a demo section to find them (and because we’re smarter on the old continent we won’t have an easier way to navigate the store -you could even make it harder to browse, just to see how smart customers from the PAL zone are (and make research to see if they are smart enough in all contries, so you could make it even less friendly)-)
Will we see you at the gamescom for the great annoucement?
Best regards.

At the end of the day love, Sony Europe need to show people some respect and not delay content for month/years/announce it’s NOT coming EVER.

I have been dying for anyone to answer my question, but no answer has been received. I sent a PM to a moderator on the official forums, and I asked it openly on both the European and US forums, but again no answer.
I’m Middle East PSN store user (Region 2). We get exactly the same updates as the European and the UK stores, except any Activision related updates from demos and DLCs. I can’t get Call of Duty: World at War map packs because they weren’t released on the Middle East/UAE store. What should I do? I found a way to fund my wallet, yet what I do want to purchase isn’t on my store!
Anybody help please!

Hi Angela,
The Portuguese store is a shame…
There are a number of missing DLC, some PS1 games missing… it´s a shame to sell games, then we can not buy the DLC to extend the gameplay The service that you mention before,(Vidzone) is not yet available.
Why isn´t this service available yet????
Angela Portugal stays in Europe(SCEE)…
Is Portugal not worth the investment?
Thanks for reading and do somthing about it

@159 – Right on!
The Portuguese store is horrible, i looked not so long ago to the UK store and my jaw reached the ground floor of my building and i live on the 5th floor. Vidzone is going to be a mirage by the looks of it and the video service might be aswell.
Worse is that it’s not just Portugal, but Poland and other “forgotten” countries, which strangely enough have a large PS3 community for it’s [The country] size.
Stop for a moment and realize that if you don’t act quickly people will get upset, they start not caring, they buy the competitors items which i must say is getting on most of our minds and start distrusting SCEE and all that they bring.
On another note, the PSN cards should’ve been here already, everytime i go to a FNAC or something like that i see Xbox Cards, piled up there and a week later, its empty.
Anyway just a big rant here with some points of sincerity…

Then anwer this: Why IS it needed on other Stores (USA)?
If the overwhelming number of PSN users want a dedicated “Demo” tab why not give it to us?
Is it typical SONY/SCEE bloody mindedness?
SONY wonder where the love (and their profits went)… I can offer a few suggestions.

if 1 PSN for all EU is not possible, then at least please add the option to select the language on the PSN to English.. like the Italian PSN, no English option at all.. there are people living here who can only speak & understand English so please dont just leave us all behind.. also, this has nothing to do with PSN but i just wanna say this, WhyTF did Sony released InFamous here in Italy with no English language on the game?!!!.. stupid move by Sony.. i have to import a UK version just to play that awesome game..
165
Posted on 12 August, 2009 at 4:55 am by rollz616
still say the UK should come under the SCEA as the SCEE is just way to over stretched and undermanned for the size of the EU area
166

And how hard is it to put the size of a file under the DLC?

you know i’m getting sick of you people deleting my comments, if you don’t like me complaining maybe you should try fixing your problems instead of censoring people.
so i’ll ask again, what is it about a demo category would make only the eu store unusable if it was there?
i have another question, why was the only store that you couldn’t buy the shivering isle, the eu store?i could get it on live, i could get it on pc, but the only way to get it on the ps3 in europe was to buy a whole new copy of the game.
can you finally explain to me why that is?
and now a public service announcement
stop the mod mb abusing his powers by victimising people he doesn’t like and ignoring the rules to protect his friends

So.. on the one hand, a unified publishing model (with localisations for the exceptions) that would make the EU market more attractive than the US – isn’t possible.
But on the other hand, you still can’t localise everything, so there has to be patchy services all round?
Doesn’t make sense, Angela.
(I would also have some comments about your frankly offensive rewrite of clear and accurate questions people have – but the blog tells me to “be more concise” after three sentences.)

Posted on 12 August, 2009 at 8:19 am by zyxses
Everybody knows that the PAL territories are treated like a bastard child by SONY. It has always been the USA and Japan.
I just wish SONY’Sontempt for us wasn’t so obvious. Yay! We got VidZone… only because it wasnt practicable in the USA.

Posted on 12 August, 2009 at 8:20 am by Dutch_Rootsman
The answers in this FAQ are the same that are cut and pasted every Friday (Aussie users).
We need common release across all territories. We need SCEE to take the initiative and ensure this happens (or come as close as humanly possible).
Please forget the spin, there is no excuse for the inconsistencies in content.
Not that you guys have anything to worry about mind you. Games on Demand (X360) are charged at such a ridiculous rate.
I love my PS3… please give me some decent digital content to play on it and at a reasonable price (ie. exchange rate is actually quite good for Aussies these days. PSN prices don’t seem to reflect this however)

Hi Angela
I’m late to the party and I guess you won’t read this message, but I’ll try anyway.
When writing something in the PS3 browser I’d like to be able to change languages on the fly, is this something we could see in the near future? Because this is a real pain, my english PS3 “predictionary” get’s cluttered with german and french words…
Thanks.

I love the pathetic list of ‘most asked questions’ – ha
How about answering the real questions, as someone posted above:
‘Can you shed any light on why Fat Princess cost more in the UK and Europe than it did in America? Almost all $15 titles convert to £10 (including the Watchmen 2 release on the exact same day as Fat Princess), so why did $15 convert to £12 for Fat Princess?
As you’re the Store Manager I assume the decision was either made by you or came past you at some point, was it simply (as I imagine) a case of squeezing more money out of people in Europe?’

It’s nice to see the video store finally arriving over here. Unlike most, I’m just glad it’ now coming over here, rather than complaining ‘it’s too late’. I’nm glad SCEE is almost as good with online features as SCEA.

I find it quite annoying that you have to restrict the users even across Europe this way. Myself I live in Switzerland, on the border to France, but I am Norwegian. I have come across problems with your restrictions on several occasions.
I bought the PSP with the Go!Explore and had huge difficulties being able to buy the maps for Europe because Go!Explore wasn’t released in Scandinavia yet and so you decided that I was not allowed to buy the maps with my Norwegian credit card (I did not own a Swiss one at the time) even if I opened a Swiss account.
A second annoying thing is that I bought LittleBigPlanet in a Canadian web-store, since I was told that games for PS3 aren’t restricted to zones. However, now I cannot buy any content for this game, and I actually have to keep an extra US account just to get to download the free content. Wonderful!
The reason I am annoyed is that you are so close of making this fantastic future-proof multimedia player, but your restrictions all over the place makes it more annoying than practical in many cases.

“Research to date has shown that the download figures for demos in the US Store and the European Store are very similar, so it seems that most visitors to the European Store are able find demos easily in whichever store they visit.”
Garbage. It seems that most visitors to the European store are able to find demos. It says nothing about how painful the process is for them. It is indisputable that it would be easier if there were a direct link to demos as there is in the US store.

Perhaps SCEE doesn’t want a demo section on the store, cause that would demonstrate how few demos there are compared to the SCEA store.

I like the new store… but is very poor… also vidzone isn’t available in Portugal and in other countries also IS SHAMEFUL! that a DLC [in ut3 for example] the titan pack i had to download it from the UK store because it isn’t on the Portuguese store… is like what the hell!?
The only way I see to play on the ps3 is to live on Japan…
I’m not going to buy games on other stores… it is hard already to buy stuff without credit card… and we haven’t pre paid card why? =(
One thing that annoys me too is the store, can’t you separate the paid downloads to the free ones?

Sorry Angela, but SCEE is clearly not up to the task. The problem is not with the developers, but with your submission guidelines.
If you can’t even admit you have a problem, you’re never going to solve it. I can see SCEA/SCEJ not wanting to be dragged down by SCEE’s incompetence, but there has to be a better way of handling the store (like letting someone else handle it).
185
Posted on 12 August, 2009 at 11:25 am by Agent_Cooper
and yes, you do need to let people download content from other regions, DLC in particular. If I import a game, I should be able to download DLC (free and paid).
You only create these artificial barriers because you want to force people into paying your ridiculous prices.

@Angela, thanks for paying attention to our questions and by answer these in a FAQ that give more of an overview of why certain complaints shouldn’t be addressed to Sony but to other parties instead. Like, why Suikoden, Metal Gear Solid for instance still haven’t released in the EU PSN stores. Of course we address these complaints towards you as you’re easier to approach for use than the publishers.

I dont think some of you understand how hard some of these things you want on a free service sony are doing a great job for a free online service. compared to xbox we have more features on ps3 which gets updates every couple of months. yes they can put a emulator on the ps3 for ps2 games but they are most likely perfecting it if you have seen the xbox emulator at work its terrible and only 300 r so games can be played.and demos and such for every game??? thats a little mad its up to the developers to release the demos.

Couple of things — I love the PlayStation store, so I want to improve it as much as possible.
A couple of suggestions however;
As everyone has mentioned, a demo along with every game would be great. Instead of having two different items however, have the full game which you click on & in the information page of that product, there’s a button you can click to download the demo. User friendly, and clutter free.
Another thing is the newly installed rating system on Xbox Live — that work’s great, and I would love it to be implemented on the PS3, or at least something similar.
Other than that, I’m sure everyone is happy with the PlayStation Store, even if there are tonnes of whingers on this blog.

@ racedriving – I’m guessing Switzerland is one country with more than one store since they have different language regions within the country, think Belgium has 3 languages as well, so it might be those pulling up the numbers.
That said, I can’t see any excuses why the stores shouldn’t look alike, should actually even make it easier for the managers, since I’m guessing that we don’t have different servers with the same content, instead the stores consist of headers pointing to the content, so in the european stores they actually have to remove pointers since the Demo Category and Trophies Category for that matter is missing, shouldn’t it be easier to just have the same pointers to everything?

a top 10 section would be really great.
so you can see what the 10 most downloaded items were last day/week/month/all time.

You don’t answer to the most important question: why are we overcharged compared to the US? I bought Fat Princess for the US store using my Italian credit card. I paid 11.48 euro instead of 15 euro. Guess what? It’s multilanguage as well. At least it plays in Italian and Engish. So much for the EU PS Store. Low on content and well overpriced.

Hi Angela,
Thank you so much for giving us insight in what feels to me as a not so very well thought out business model. It looks like M$ had a better plan with the point system instead of using currency.
I’m also not happy with your answers. I feel left out not having cheaper prices for content and be left out on free services that pop up in a few countries but not where I live. It feels like I’m treated as a second grade customer and that the money I invested in the machine is not appreciated by Sony (I was a day 1 buyer). It doesn’t make me feel good about choosing your brand. Don’t understand me wrong, I’m not angry, I’m just very, very disappointed.

One hundred and ninety six comments and only one (29) mentions that the Playstation Store has yet to include file sizes of downloads on the descriptions page. Can anyone imagine any similar type of site with such a disparity of file types not informing people of the size of the download before they started it?
