Hi everyone,
My name is Angela Madronero and I’m the European PlayStation Store Manager. For a while now, we’ve seen a number of recurring questions about the PlayStation Store appearing on the blog. Many of the questions can’t be covered in the weekly PlayStation Store update; therefore, I wanted to take this opportunity to respond to some of the most frequently asked questions.
How has the European PlayStation Store grown since its launch? Are there any plans to increase the reach of the store further?
The first thing to say is that the “European” PlayStation Store is also available in non-European countries. Basically, the countries that make up the SCEE region (which historically operated the PAL TV system) all come under the banner of Europe. For the purposes of this blog I’ll continue to call it the European Store, which operates alongside our sister stores in servicing American, Japanese and Asian markets.
We have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages. As you can imagine, it takes a significant amount of coordination and operational support to maintain our existing stores; however, our current list of countries is by no means final. We are definitely interested in further geographic expansion of the PlayStation Store.
The PlayStation Store is a commercial enterprise; therefore, we need to prioritise the roll-out of additional stores by reviewing a country’s PLAYSTATION 3 installed base, broadband penetration and e-commerce environment. These reviews are completed on a case-by-case basis. Ultimately, the roll-out of additional countries needs to make commercial sense.
What improvements have been made to the PlayStation Store since launch?
Those people who have been using PS Store since 2007 will have seen many changes in such a relatively short space of time. The changes are usually made in response to user comments, or to improve operational efficiency.
From a user point of view, over the course of two years we’ve:
- Re-launched the PS3 store with a significantly improved layout and design using a native PS3 technology rather than the original browser-based store. This dramatically improved the speed performance and provided a richer graphical experience. We were also able to configure the same store design to both High-definition and Standard-definition TV.
- Implemented an ‘A-Z’ search section throughout all stores.
- Rolled-out a ‘Preview Button’ for sneak peeks at content.
- Launched the PSP Store and made PSP content available via the PC (Media Go).
Our most recent updates include:
- Design refresh
- Search functionality within English language stores; roll-out across non-English language stores to follow
- Additional rotating advertising slots in order to highlight new content
Why is the navigation different across different regions?
There are times when different regions choose slightly different navigation flows or ways to reach content. Basically this choice is a reflection of the type and quantity of content on offer, as well as the differing operational requirements of each store.
Clearly with so many stores in so many different languages, there are some unique operational and consumer facing requirements for the European Store, but our basic approach is to provide navigation that allows users access to content in the quickest time and with the least number of clicks.
In order to ensure the best user experience, we conduct surveys and user tests to analyse the ways in which consumers access content. These tests are completed in many countries in order to make sure that all requirements are captured and considered before the final decisions are made.
We have been asked whether it would be possible to have a demo category that allows for direct entry to demos from the Store Top (home page). Research to date has shown that the download figures for demos in the US Store and the European Store are very similar, so it seems that most visitors to the European Store are able find demos easily in whichever store they visit. For this reason we are not planning to change the placement of demos in the store; instead we are concentrating our efforts on changing the navigation flow in some other ways.
Why is there different content on the European Store from the US and Japanese stores?
This question often gets asked. In fact, all Stores have different content depending on their local markets. We are committed to working very hard to ensure that our first-party content (the games created by our own Sony Computer Entertainment development teams) is published across all the PlayStation-Stores, simultaneously. We know how important this is to you, and I hope that you’ve seen an improvement in synchronised, worldwide releases over the past six months.
Why is there a difference in third party content?
The decision about whether and when to release a game for sale is in the hands of the individual publisher (companies like Capcom, EA, Konami, Ubisoft, etc.).
In the same way that the publisher decides when to launch the disc version of a game, they also decide if and when PlayStation Network content is made available.
There are many reasons why our third party partners may not be able to launch content in one region on a particular time/date; this may be due to technical glitches, digital rights issues, localisation requirements etc. So the issues are a little more complex than may first appear.
We know that there is a lot of frustration when content is released on one store but not another. I can confirm that from a PlayStation Store point of view, we are committed to supporting our third party partners in bringing as much content as possible to the European Store.
In addition to accepting credit cards, the US allows you to use pre-paid cards within the PlayStation-Store. Will we be getting a pre-paid cards system and, if so, when?
This is something we’re definitely looking into for European Store users. I can’t give you any further information at the moment but I can assure everyone that we will be bringing you more news in the not too distant future, so please hang in there!
When will Europe get a video and music download service?
We recently launched VidZone – a great EU first, free of charge music video streaming service. We have received very positive feedback and are thrilled with its successful launch, with over 1 million downloads in less than 8 weeks.
At Games Convention in August last year, we announced that we had a long-term plan to launch a video on demand service for some countries in the SCEE region. This is still our plan, and as soon as we have all the details locked down, one of my colleagues who is working on the programme will give you an update on when and what will be available.
I hope that answers some of your immediate questions. Keep the comments and feedback coming, and I look forward to updating you as and when I have more information to share.

Thanks for the information
Lets hope sony is able to bring the goodies (vidzone, video-, music download service) to as many countries/customers as possible.
I know, it’s sure is no easy task, but crucial for an overall good customer satisfaction.

At 199 – yes, they are full of rubbish these blog posters. Not one word about pricing discrepancies, just constant PR guff.

We DESPRETLY need new avatars from actual games, GTA, LBP, MGS, BioShock, Mirrors Edge to name but a few. The most recent avatar on the store from an actual game is Haze for crying out loud.

I dont want a demo section to browse demos, i want one so when im looking for new games to buy digitally on the store, im not bombarded with demos, which makes my buying experience a little more fustrating thsn it should be. At least make sections to divide games, demos, add-ons and classics. Other than that though, the stores great.

It’s beyond me how you can look at both the US-store and the PAL-store, and not come to the conclusion that the US-store is so much better.
I’m not talking about the contents, as you have pointed out, not everything comes down to Sony. But the way the store is organised is so much better. Separate demo-section, distinctive icons, clean and easy.
The PAL-store in comparison is cluttered and messy.
But perhaps you can do some extensive research and show us that “we” (the PS3 users) are wrong….
Just remember, sales are not equal to customer satisfaction. And yes, in that last area Sony can improve so much more.

Great entry and I first want to say that the PSN store has definately been improved over the past few months.
Some personal thoughts:
- I’m not buying a game for 10-15 euro when I can’t see a video/screenshots, nor a user review (even a link would do as it is connected to the web anyway), star rating or size of the game (levels). Even for small casual games a demo makes sense (I got the pinball game after trying it). Like me, many of us are not familiar with old(er) console games.
- I personally don’t like the navigation through the sections on te left, I always find myself going back and forth before I found what I’m looking for. I guess i like to have a bettter location for the search butten and turn it into a search bar.
- Definately looking forward to the video on demand announcement.
Thanks again for the post and reading the entries, much appreciated

What I miss the most from the EU PlayStation Store are the Konami PS1 games.
US PSN had Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for over 2 years now, and is one of the bestselling titles there, but for some reason it has yet to be released here.
And when we finally got a good Konami PS1 game here, Silent Hill, it was removed after just a few days.
It would be nice to see Castlevania: SOTN, Suikoden 1&2, Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill!
I would also love to see some Square-Enix PS1 titles that never reached Europe back in the days. Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Threads of Fate and Brave Fencer Musashi were all released in the US back in the PS1 days but never came to Europe, and they are all excellent. And then their games that reached Europe too, like Vagrant Story!
Lots of improvements that can be done with the PS1 Classics section!

As for the US to EU delays that are 3rd party releases…..
How can Microsoft manage it on Live?
Why did it take over 7 months for the Blast Factor patch to make it to Europe?
Even the game developers said it was in the hands of SCEE??
I’m not having a go, but the PSN needs to offer more than Live does and there are simple areas where it is clearly behind.

First of all, i would like to say that i think the PS3 is a excellent machine. That beeing said, i do have some complaints.
I agree with what has already been said; you talked about the video store coming to Europe a long time ago. I still isn’t here. Microsoft is launching theire video-on-demand in Norway soon. (this fall) You have had a long time to figure out the legalities with the different Scandinavian countries.
Living in Norway, i am starting to get used to beeing left out. Microsoft is starting to get the idea, that they should expand theyre services. When will Sony too get it?
And i do hope that when you finally launch the video store, it will not be exclusive to England and the ‘Big’ and ‘Important’ countries!
Also, i would like to see a Demos section on the EU Store!

Pre-paid PSN cards within the Playstation Store would be very nice!

New Avatars are definitely needed, even if I have to pay for them. (I personally think the Chimera skull and crossed guns from Resistance: Retribution would make one hell of an avatar). Or ideally, our PlayStation Home characters being displayed on the XMB in the friends list. Not only would it mean every one is unique (providing they don’t use a pre made character) it would also give more of an incentive to those who still view Home as a pointless service that doesn’t benefit their PS3 experience.

So once again SCEE is pushing the blame onto 3rd party developers.
Heres a novel concept for you; give them more support.
Then again, its strange how 3rd party developers manage to get simultaneous releases when its a disc-based product. Its only when something shows up on the Playstation Store when the problems start to appear. Funny that.
Ever since the original Playstation, SCEE has been the runt of the litter as far as the SCE group has been concerned. Releases are months, if not years behind the rest of the world. Its laughable. It encourages people to use grey imports (RIP Lik-Sang, God bless ‘em) and turns people off the brand as a whole. Its funny, when I owned a 360 I was never concerned about waiting months for a title, whether it was digitally distributed or not.
Maybe you ought to start talking to the likes of Valve. Its not perfect, but its a vast improvement on the running joke that is the EU Playstation Store.
Sony have a long tradition in treating Europe as a second-class customer. This latest PR guff says to me that nothing has changed and that attitude is set to continue. Unless you’ve got dollars or yen burning a hole in your back pocket Sony simply are not interested.

“Research to date has shown that the download figures for demos in the US Store and the European Store are very similar … For this reason we are not planning to change the placement of demos in the store”
I know that people have already commented on this, but I’m saying it too just so you understand that the statement doesn’t make any sense. The download figures are the same because people in both US and EU want demos, not because the demos are equaly easy to find.
You say you want the store to be easy to browse, and out of all the stores the US one is by far the most easily browsed. You say there are differences in the lay outs beacuse there is different content on the stores, but this too doesn’t really make any sense. Even though the actual games might differ, it’s still all the same kind of content. Therefore it would be very easy to have the same lay out across all stores. It’s not like a single store offers ringtones and another one offers clothes. It’s all just games, demos and dlc, and those are also the top categories that makes the most sense.
Don’t get me wrong here, I think you’re doing a great job over all! =)

dont care about a demo section as i dont mind browsing dont care for a video service either as i would continue to use youtube for this. cant believe so many people whinging about a brilliant FREE service that has never failed or crashed on me. the only thing that would make this service better is music as it makes my bravia tv buzz and im using a sony es amplifier with fibre optic connection to the ps3 but if the sound is low and im using the store my tv makes a buzzing noise plz play the music from the shopping centre in home when a user enters the store as it drives me nuts just thought id mention it
p.s. keep up the good work!

I really don’t believe this.
We, your customers are telling you that we want a demo category.
You are coming out with some contrived spin about why you won’t.
You won’t say it but you won’t give us a demo category because you misguidedly believe that by making us sort through all the pay for rubbish on the store in order to find demos that we will impulse buy like hypnotised robots.
You are wrong.
Sony have so disappointed me this generation, that next generation we will have one console in our house and I’m afraid it’s going to be the Microsoft one.
Well done Sony and good job Angela on totally ignoring your customers and answering your own made up questions.
Utterly abysmal PR.

Completely agree with virtually everyone here. We NEED a demo section. Also adding a few more categories would help too, e.g.:
-PS3 Games
-PS3 DLC
-PS3 Demos
etc. Everything shoved into one overflowing category is really not very user-friendly.

Please make it possible to download demos for more games. x360 live has demos for allmost all games produced for it and ps3 store is not close by any means? Rather strange if you ask me.
And one another important feature a TRIAL download for all buyable games on store. Give the user a choice dont force them to buy and getting them to be unsure in the future if it is worth it or not. All arcade live games on x360 is trial download wich i allways use to test before buy.
Those are important features you cant ignore.
PS.
More PS3 themes for the ps3 would be great.

Good luck, arranging it for me and my other non-creditcard Playstation wanna-buy stuff players!

Just a quick question, is there no way SCEE can work together with publishers to quicken the process of releasing their products in the European sector?
I understand that the American store has PS One classics that include Tomb Raider so would there be any method of quickening the process with Eidos (Or Square Enix whatever you fancy)?
