The Best Keeps Getting Better… Well.. We Think So Anyway
I seriously think our entire office is hooked on picking playlists for you guys! You see, we like to give everyone in the office a chance to have their say in on what videos should be in a playlist, not just our über music experts. The problem is, it seems everyone has a different opinion and will fight to the death for their right to uphold that opinion. Don’t worry, we came up with a solution, we have erected an Ultimate Fighting Hexagon in the middle of the office. Whoever wins gets their video in the playlist. Simples!
That doesn’t actually happen…but I wish it did! Anyway, now to business…
We are all in agreement that we have the best new Homepage and Playlist features ever! We also have a little bit of interactivity for all the people out there in all the various communities which I’m sure you will have no problem participating in. So keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times and…. LLLETTTS GOOO!!
Newly Added Videos Playlist!
You’ve been asking for weeks and now it’s here. We have a dedicated newly added video playlist in //Recommended / New Videos where you can see ALL, and I repeat ALL videos just added to this territory. Get clicking on the triangle!
Behind The Scenes Exclusives!!
VidZone TV Show – be the first to watch the pilot for our new TV show! Our presenters will serve up celebrity interviews, backstage footage from festivals and gigs as well as all the gossip from your favourite artists …and all of this in our very own ice cream van!! Crazy I know! We would really like to know what you think so get commenting!
Wireless and Lovebox Festivals – That word “exclusive” again… Exclusive footage and interviews from two of London’s best festivals including words from Pixie Lott, Florence (without her machine), Mr Hudson, Soul II Soul, N-Dubz, Kid Cudi and more!
Peter Andre Interview – Lock up your daughters…and wives.. and girlfriends…as everyone’s favourite Aussie divorcee speaks exclusively to VidZone about his new single “Behind Closed Doors”, which is well on it’s way to become a UK #1 single this weekend. Pete chats candidly, offering advice about marriage! (UK+Ireland only).
Other Home Page stuff
VidZone VS Playstation 3 – Almost as perfect as Alien VS Predator or Freddy VS Jason…and you to get to be involved! We challenged the guys and girls from the PlayStation 3 office to see who could come up with the best video playlist and we want you to be the judge! This is how you vote… All you need to do is leave a comment saying either “VOTE VIDZONE” or “VOTE PS3” on any official VidZone site…FaceBook, Twitter, PS Blog or the PS Forum and we will find them. Of course, as I write the blog I get to be massively biased and I say VOTE VIDZONE! VOTE VIDZONE! VOTE VIDZONE!
Video’s from the Movies – What is your favourite movie? Easy…Mine is Weekend at Bernie’s. A harder question is what’s your favourite music video from a Movie? My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion? Mamma Mia by ABBA? Black Suits Coming – Will Smith? Find them all here in one place on VidZone for the next two weeks.
New Playlists – Holiday Songs – No Cliff Richard, but all the other videos that will get you into the holiday spirit. Groove Armada, Roger Sanchez and MGMT feature.
Underground Acts – Small artists need love too!, All your favourite underground acts you know and some you won’t including Dananananaykroyd, Mumm-ra and DJ Vadim.
Sunday Sessions – Sunday is for sitting back and back relaxing so why not add this playlistwith Newton Faulkner, Amy Winehouse, Keane and more.
Metal Mania – More metal than you can shake a piece of metal at. Get ready to rock till you drop. Motörhead, NIN and Bullet For My Valentine are there to help.
Karaoke Favourites – We all know you have a beautiful singing voice, prove it with these sing along classics. Videos from Shaggy, Girls Aloud and Abba (of course).
That’s it, surely you can’t want any more! If so well then you will have to wait until the next update.
Signing off,
Ben

I don’t seem too be able to get my vidzone to play videos. Sometimes the video is just blank, other times it says
The vidzone application encountered an error.
The video you requested could not be found or is corrupted.
Is there any way to sort this or is it due to the demand?
Posted on 13 August, 2009 at 5:53 pm by Ben Creasey
Hey Leigh5T
Any problems can be emailed to ps-problems@vidzone.tv and we’ll try to fix the issue for you.

So… I’m sure this Vidzone thing is great and all – not that I can tell since I don’t have it and as such is more interested in things I can actually use/buy/download/whatever. I do find it a tad annoying with all the trumpeting – especially when the news ticker on my PS3 kept telling me I could go get Vidzone now, even though it wasn’t available.
I can’t wait for the day when the EU cracks down and says customers across the EU aren’t allowed to be treated differently. (That goes for all the service providers)
Being in a small country it’s more than a little frustrating seeing various services with “whoops, not available for you yet”, “oh you have to pay even though country X and Y get this for free”, “Sorry, you can’t have this ever” and so on.
I’ve been standing with cash in my hands for TEN YEARS now waiting for someone to be ready to take it by delivering decent online services at reasonable prices. No-one seems willing to take it. It’s highly puzzling.
Rant over.

I must say this blog is fantastic. Thanks for your reply to my post, and for other peoples post. Its great to see such a pro-active website, especially so since the community was really after this!
on topic, I stand corrected as its actually six countries. Why was it not possible to launch in all EU countries out of curiosity?
Posted on 13 August, 2009 at 5:58 pm by Ben Creasey
Hi NRD,
There are a few reasons why it wasn’t possible to launch in all of the EU. These include; label licensing, advertising availability and streaming costs. But we hope to expand the VidZone service to more countries as soon as possible.

Netherlands and many of the Nordics are the mist highly setup countries in the world when it comes to broadband! How would streaming cost have anything to do with it? If videostore foes live in selected countries it’ll be a sad sad day!

Thanks for the nice service! One thing though: I had a quick look at the new videos for my country (Germany) under “Recommended / New Videos” and they are all much worse in quality than those from the other playlists. Any idea why?
Posted on 14 August, 2009 at 10:09 am by Ben Creasey
Hi Lempriere,
I’m really sorry about this we’re looking into this matter as we speak as we strive to bring you high quality videos all the time. Rest assured if this is definitely an issue at our end and not with your broadband connection then it will be corrected as soon as possible.

BEN!!! 3 weeks ive been asking please tell us if PINK FLOYD will appear anytime soon , please reply this week
Posted on 14 August, 2009 at 10:18 am by Ben Creasey
Hi Deadrest,
Sorry I haven’t got back to you, time restraints mean I can’t respond to every single blog comment as I need to encode more lovely videos for you! However, to try and shed some light, we can’t actually give you specific time frames of when a video will be going live as it depends on several factors like when we receive the videos from the labels and if there are any problems encoding.
We are constantly working to expand our library of music videos for you so keep checking the updates to see if your favourites have been added. All video requests are noted down from the blog but if you think of more you can email playstation@vidzone.tv
Hope this helps!

@ Ennkidu – Well, thats why the money I usually spend on PSN and Blu-ray games now has been put into a X360, getting feed up with the AS SOON AS POSSIBLE phrase.
@ Helvedeshunden – Well, M$ has already been pounded by the Euopean Parliement for issues regarding browsers and mediaplayers in Windows, so who knows.

We’re working on this right now and will continue to do so until it is fixed. Apologies!

I would love to have some kind of “radiostations”.
You choose a genre, or an artist and it mixes the music for you, linke Apple´s Genius, or lastfm.
Most of the time I´m just too lazy to browse throug all the stuff und usually never finding what I´m looking for at all.
So all I use are the recommended playlists.

Thanks for the metal. How about more classic bands though? Iron Maiden and Megadeth, two bands that are every metalheads staple diet. They have loads of videos too.

Other than saying that I concur with others saying the UI needs an overhaul (especially the search, I’m not always sure if a band starts with the word ‘THE’ which it may be catalogued under). I just wanted to say the replies you have left to comments are some of the best I have ever seen. Even better than the Playstation Home team on the forums. If the rest of Sony was so transparent there would be a lot less frustrated users.
Thanks for taking the time and effort!

Again another useless update and a big F* U to the rest of Europe. I currently have about 10 games on my wishlist (viewable on eurogamer.net profile name is SL33PY if you care). I will now NOT buy any of the PS3 games on that list, nor will I purchase anything on the playstation store until you get this sorted and bring the VidZone to ALL Europeans. If you can’t deliver to the whole territory then DON’T START PUTTING IT OUT!!!
You guys don’t seem to grasp the enourmous frustration that comes with every VidZone post not detailing when THE REST OF THE EU WHICH IS ONE TERRITORY will get the VidZone app!
If you keep this up I’ll end up putting my PS3 in some dark cabinet and no longer caring at all. Since you don’t seem to care for us neither.
This article got yet another ’1′ rating and I suggest everyone that isn’t allowed to use the vidzone do the same.

I would like to echo MrPain09′s complaint that most of the “Weird Al” videos are inaccessible to people since ” is not a searchable punctuation to therefore you can only get 1 video through the search.
I’d also like to know when the other Tenacious D videos will be available.
Also, ‘No You Girls’ is the only Franz Ferdinand video and yet that is unplayable, it has a yellow triangle on it and cannot be played. Why are some videos available to search but you can’t play them?

Will there be an update for navigation with the PS3-Remote?

@lorghe : You’re just right.
We’re regular customers after all.
A good old fashioned boycott of the PSN maybe?
But I’m not quite sure many people are ready to do it actually.

I think vidzone is great service and really streamlined when it starts up (ignoring the search function…)
Though why does it take so long for it to start up? This is the one thing that stops vidzone from being completely seamless with PSN. Are you working on starting vidzone more fluidly (on par with PSN store)? Its a good service, but personally for me, i’m using the web browser to view videos on youtube. Especially since it takes just a fraction of Vidzone’s start up time to search for videos.

Just reading about caching 25 songs locally, any chance of this being definable for uber hdd people?
Also, have you seen the Silverlight stuff? Where it streams and dynamically alters bitrate based on the stress put on your broadband? Would be nice to see that in there at some point, would greatly improve performance and visual quality. Of course toggleable for places which have capped broadband.

Hey Ben
An awesome application you have here and apart from the previously mentioned search function, lack of HD video & streamed adverts, I’d say its pretty perfect!
Can I ask that 3 things are taken onboard for the next patch however:
1) When you reduce the sound effect (I always reduce to zero as it spoils music playback for me) and save this option, the default level is restored upon next boot of the application!
2) Add shuffle functionality
3) Allow user generated playlists to be uploaded for anyone else to download, in a similar fashion to LittleBigPlanet levels or My Buzz Quizes
Keep up the good work mate!
Cheers

Hi oscardaniel,
Unfortunately this week we had an issue with just the new videos that were added. Don’t worry we should have this fixed today and you can get back to enjoying the usual high quality of videos that you have come to expect from VidZone.

Any information when Vidzone comes to the rest of europe?
84
Posted on 15 August, 2009 at 3:46 pm by MaXMC
So I guess we’ll never see this in Sweden since most of us now use Spotify for our music and we won’t tolerate [DELETED] like quiting our media player to look at an advertisement link…
I whish xmb could have last.fm support instead, that is a working service and it would be nice to be able to track the music I play on the PS3 as well…

I guess it’s time for us “outside” Europe to forget Vidzone and the PS3 and concentrate on the brand new PSP Go instead:

At least they have a good sense of humour in China!!!

That’s all nice and fun for those who are already using the store, but what about us people in other European territories? Finally we were getting excited about having an awesome application launch in Europe before NA, and then you limit it to only a few countries? What about us in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy and many other areas? I’m sure you’re trying, but please give us some sort of feedback.

Hi Ben,
Love the service, looks really good and the more videos on there the better. I looked on your response to toddhunter’s suggestion extremely favourably, as you know in Australia broadband data caps are very low and that’ll be the real killer for a service like VidZone in Oz.
If you can find a way to cache the content locally at ISP’s so it’s unmetered that would make the service a lot more popular, something you should also be looking at for digital distribution for the PSPGo!
Keep up the good work!

Hi there agains.
BUG REPORT in vidzone:
Vidzone doesn’t take into account PS3’s button layout.
My PS3 (CECHA00) is “O button” for “OK” and “X button” for “Cancel”.
Vidzone, contrary to other programs, forces “X button” for “OK” and “O button” for “Cancel”.
