More than 800 journalists and their laptops packed into E-Werk in Cologne, Germany before the start of gamescom to hear the latest announcements from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
A brand new PlayStation 3 topped the bill, as Kaz Hirai – President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. joined Andrew House – President and CEO of SCEE – on-stage. Two-thirds slimmer and lighter than the previous model, it features a 120GB Hard Disk Drive and will be available throughout Europe from September 1, 2009, at the attractive price of €299.
Staying with hardware, it was also revealed that, from November, PSP will be available in two new colours – Turquoise Green and Blossom Pink.
PlayStation Store will expand its range of downloadable content when the PlayStation Network video delivery service comes to the UK, France, Germany and Spain this November – the rest of Europe will follow in 2010. Partnerships with illustrious studios such as 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount Pictures and many more will ensure a stellar line-up of movies available to buy or rent at launch, on both PS3 and PSP, and in either SD or HD.
PSP owners can also look forward to a new section on PlayStation Store. The new Digital Comics service, announced on-stage by Ira Rubenstein of Marvel Entertainment, will deliver a regularly updated library of comics from Marvel and many other publishers in December 2009.
The digital reader – a downloadable application that allows users to read their comics – features an intuitive Autoflow system that highlights particular parts of a cell to mimic the way the eye moves across the page for a great reader experience on a small screen.
With all of this downloadable entertainment comes a new way to add funds to your PlayStation Network wallet. PlayStation Network Cards do just that and will be available next month in €20 and €50 denominations.
Yet another new category coming to PlayStation Store on October 1, 2009, is minis. It will contain a range of PSP games under 100MB in size that are quick to download and perfect for gaming on the go. Electronic Arts are supporting minis and more than 50 titles – including Tetris – will be available to download before the end of the year.
The number of people enjoying VidZone is set to grow – many more European countries will receive the service before the end of the year.
Quantic Dreams’ David Cage took to the stage to introduce a new Heavy Rain character. Recalling a traumatic moment in his own life where he and his wife momentarily lost their son while shopping, he unveiled Ethan – a young architect who lost his son in a tragic accident.
All in all, a great presentation with the new PS3 stealing the show – stay tuned for more updates from gamescom.

James quick question. When you say that the video store is coming to the UK, are you referring to the Rep. of Ireland as well. If so, please be aware that my ancestors didn’t suffer hundreds of years of oppression and then finally getting our independence, to still be considered part of the UK. If however, the store isn’t coming to Ireland in November, I apologise

What about “PS3 Other OS Install” Feature in the Slim version?
There some rumour around the web about the ‘disabling’ of this feature. But, Kaz Hirai, during the Conference said that ‘all the PS3 Fat feature are still present in the PS3 Slim.
So?

I really understand all the frustrated customers who are still waiting for Vidzone as it is a free service… but who really cares about a video store?
To rent a movie is so 80′s.

Unfortunately, having done a search for the official press release, it appears that the store is also coming to Ireland at launch. This now raises two issues.
1) You don’t rate Ireland as a country, as you felt we weren’t worth mentioning in your blog post
2) You do indeed consider Ireland to be part of the UK, which truly and honestly is offensive
I would be grateful for a response

Why is there no in-game-voicechat? CMON!
We don’t need new features in HOME, we really don’t need animated themes… why?!

@brihar, here’s the beauty you can’t only rent them but also “buy” them!

@Auron89
Check the default PS3 browser site, read about PS3 Slim and…yep! The “Install other OS” will be disabled.

How can you not show the biggest PlayStation Franchise on Europes biggest gaming show? Where was GT%?
PSN Cards are awesome but a whole year too late, PS3 Slim was leaked and the conference was way too short.

I’m very interested in the ‘lack of other os’ rumor… I hope it isn’t true.
What about the new countries to receive VidZone? Are there any list of these country availible? Of course Poland won’t be mentioned (which becomes more and more irritating).

Very impressive Sony, good job. You delivered big time.
I really feel sorry for Sony, in the weeks running up to big events, they always seem to suffer from a barrel of rumors and supposed leaks, which are never officially confirmed. Yet people always seem to think that they are official, and Sony gets lambasted for not announcing them. For example, Sony didn’t say GT5 would be shown or a release date announced, yet people are disappointed when it isn’t.
I am glad to see that there are some nice new features coming out with 3.0 and the Video Store should be great as well.
Europe appears to be catching up on the US in many areas, keep it up Sony!

@41.
With regards to the info panel, it looks like the scrolling info may be able to be turned off, on the 3.0 video (on the US blog) at 1min50secs in the video it shows only the clock/message info in a smaller box without the scrolling part (the clock is showing 7:25am) yet at other parts of the video (at 7:11am) shows the scrolling info, now i’m not saying it can deffinatly be turned off BUT it does strike me as weird that parts show it without it and parts show it with it, so one would assume it could be turned off just like before.
At least with regards to the new whats new section it shows your last played game be it disked based or otherwise which is nice, but that PS stroe icon everywere still bugs me something rotten.

@52 If we are indeed getting a video store on launch I am pleased but If Sony are referring that The Republic Ireland is part of the UK I am outraged, my great-grandfather didn’t fight in 1916 just for the country he fought for to be looked upon as a part of the UK >:(

Any of those prices in £?

Posted on 18 August, 2009 at 9:20 pm by brihar
@Onna76_NL
yes of course I can “buy” a movie!
But I haven’t bought a movie since I realised how much money big companies make from selling movies.
From VHS to DVD, from DVD to Blu-ray or Digital downloads…
And at the end the artists don’t even earn their keep!!!
This is why I prefer a free service with commercials than a v.o.d.

Questions:
* How much will PSPgo be in Australia?
* How much will PS3 Slim be in Australia?
* Any reason to switch from chunky to slim?
Thanks

@61.
On the EU PSN site (the ps3 browsers default page) it states the UK price as an RRP of £249.99, so that’s the UKs new lower price, i find it pretty crappy TBH, i could already buy a brand new 80gig for £249.99 and when converted to dollars that’s $413 and it’s evern worse for the EU as there 299 euros is $422!!!.
The UK price should be £225 max and the EU should be 250euros max IMO as currently it’s a great price drop for the US and a nice kick in teeth for the rest of us.

Posted on 18 August, 2009 at 9:27 pm by LSB123
66, making a Slim the standard console saves Sony a lot of money, as they’re cheaper to make
Sticking with the chunky the entire lifecycle of the PS3 just isn’t good business sense

Posted on 18 August, 2009 at 9:28 pm by LSB123
Thanks Ziggy. Yeah, doesn’t sound that much of a drop from the deals you can already get, hopefully they make up with it with some decent bundles.

I would like to know one thing:
Will the PSPGo be sold in countries which do not have a PlayStation Store? Or it will be available for UK, France, Spain, Germany and a bunch of other countries?

@68.
I think you may have missed his point, he seems to be asking is there a reason for the consumer to swtich, not why did sony swtich.
@66.
It’s lighter, smaller and uses a little less power that seems to be about it for pluses, for minuses it can’t install another OS like the phat, there is still no comfirmation on the changing of the HDD and it doesn’t look as nice (but that’s an opinion not fact
)..

Posted on 18 August, 2009 at 9:46 pm by Croopnick_PL
Sony–You want a list what we REALLY want?
Voice Chat during game,
VidZone and VideoStore to ALL countries
Play PS2 games on PS3
Cheaper stuff on PSS
better internet browser (it’s really hard to talk to Mozilla?)
More PSone games
and we want to be treat like US gamers.
No some useless Home things, no animated Themes (I bet they make system slower and maybe crash), no puttin everywhere PSS icon.
One good thing of 3.0 FW is…moving clock.

That’s lovely, a nice neat new PS3. Perhaps Sony can now work on an update for the Play TV that actually makes it usable as a PVR in Mpeg4 areas!

The only thing that troubles me about the new firmware is the spam of the store link through the XMB. Sony, why stop there and not add it in the system settings menu too?
Finally.. a PS3 with 120GB, BLuRay and all the other goodies for £250….Or a PSPGo for the same price… is it not obvious how overpriced the PSPGo is?
88
Posted on 18 August, 2009 at 10:33 pm by twistedintoform
ziggy-moff:
$299 is the US price WITHOUT tax.
£249 is the UK price WITH tax.
take off our 17.5% VAT (ok, it’s temporarily 15% but will revert at the end of the year), and therefore the equivalent UK price is £211 or about $345.
compare games:
$60 in the US,
£40 in the UK.
it works out that they’re actually cheaper here.

Great news, but…
Please fire the designer, it is the ugliest bird of the current generation. I love the extra’s the PS3 is getting, I just hope there will be a nicer looking slim, or at least with a shiny polished finish. For some reason the slim looks like a DEV kit to me :/
Kudos for everything else

Posted on 18 August, 2009 at 10:55 pm by wing126
oh god i think that ps3 slim looks terrible the only reason i myself would buy one of them would be if my ps3 gets the ylod or if the fat ps3 were out of stock.
other than that the conference was great! psn cards and a video store for europe hell yes!!!! and firmware 3.0 sounds pretty great, but premium themes and avatars? WTF is up with that? yes i know the americans had them already but back then it was retarded imo.
still some awesome announcements made though

hey guys at SONY; considering you have changed the logo of the PS3, I think you should change the logo in the BOX ARTS too.

i’m really worried about slim overheating problems. i actually feel my 80gb hot sometimes after 2 hours of online playing, specially under it; however nothing to worry about, it’s well placed for ventilation and the zone that’s under is the fan, not the cell.
but i even heard about slim ps2 having overheating problems, and this slim ps3 could have too. we won’t know before someone has a slim ps3 in his hands and tell us how hot it is.

Chyrsus:
i think the games software conferences don’t start until thursday, but i wouldn’t expect anything more than maybe a few new trailers for stuff that’s already known, like uncharted 2, MAG, R&C:ACIT, GoW III, heavy rain, etc.

I for one, am disappointed that Sony haven’t put the PlayStation Store icon under every menu of the XMB.
Why only Video, Games and PlayStation Network?
Couldn’t they put it under Music and Photo as well?
I love the PlayStation Store icon. FW 3.0 FTW.

Nice one Jem/Home team.
