More than 800 journalists and their laptops packed into E-Werk in Cologne, Germany before the start of gamescom to hear the latest announcements from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
A brand new PlayStation 3 topped the bill, as Kaz Hirai – President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. joined Andrew House – President and CEO of SCEE – on-stage. Two-thirds slimmer and lighter than the previous model, it features a 120GB Hard Disk Drive and will be available throughout Europe from September 1, 2009, at the attractive price of €299.
Staying with hardware, it was also revealed that, from November, PSP will be available in two new colours – Turquoise Green and Blossom Pink.
PlayStation Store will expand its range of downloadable content when the PlayStation Network video delivery service comes to the UK, France, Germany and Spain this November – the rest of Europe will follow in 2010. Partnerships with illustrious studios such as 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount Pictures and many more will ensure a stellar line-up of movies available to buy or rent at launch, on both PS3 and PSP, and in either SD or HD.
PSP owners can also look forward to a new section on PlayStation Store. The new Digital Comics service, announced on-stage by Ira Rubenstein of Marvel Entertainment, will deliver a regularly updated library of comics from Marvel and many other publishers in December 2009.
The digital reader – a downloadable application that allows users to read their comics – features an intuitive Autoflow system that highlights particular parts of a cell to mimic the way the eye moves across the page for a great reader experience on a small screen.
With all of this downloadable entertainment comes a new way to add funds to your PlayStation Network wallet. PlayStation Network Cards do just that and will be available next month in €20 and €50 denominations.
Yet another new category coming to PlayStation Store on October 1, 2009, is minis. It will contain a range of PSP games under 100MB in size that are quick to download and perfect for gaming on the go. Electronic Arts are supporting minis and more than 50 titles – including Tetris – will be available to download before the end of the year.
The number of people enjoying VidZone is set to grow – many more European countries will receive the service before the end of the year.
Quantic Dreams’ David Cage took to the stage to introduce a new Heavy Rain character. Recalling a traumatic moment in his own life where he and his wife momentarily lost their son while shopping, he unveiled Ethan – a young architect who lost his son in a tragic accident.
All in all, a great presentation with the new PS3 stealing the show – stay tuned for more updates from gamescom.

I have a quick (but absolutely crucial to me) question about the upcoming video store: will it offer both the subtitled and dubbed versions, or shall we be limited to our country’s language (like on Microsoft’s Marketplace)?
While I love the idea of finally having a VOD service on the PS3, I won’t spend a cent it if I can’t watch movies in their original language. I *really* hope Sony will give us the option.

I have the same issue..
Bought KDL40W4000 august 08, got the ps3 this x-mas.
It would be a really nice thing to be able to start/stop movies from tv-remote.

“The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system.”
Sony updating hardware and taking out a feature? who’d have thought it. This was something I was going to do when I upgraded my hard drive but never got around to it and to be honest probablly never will.
Overall no suprises and really nothing to get excited about if you already own a PS3, be interested to see when 3.0 is available, I’ll be intetrested to see the quality of iplayer compared to using it through the browser and the prices from the store of other video content

@GroundhogDK, I have no answer about that despite I’ve been searching for you, but isn’t the possibility that’ll concern a hardware issue and not software? If its a software issue then the fat PS3′s will presumably obtain the function as well with an update. Sony has usually been “partly” clear about firmware updates in the past.
Don’t shoot me if I’m wrong though because I’m only guessing

@foolishoptimist, usually has to do with national legalization issues. Which makes me wonder why not legalizing an application in every country and then release simultaneous instead of in parts accross the Pal territories.
@Splutterbug you mean Linux? No idea, maybe due to complexitiy of installing and problems that might occur with the hardware, which may occur more on the Slim… but I’m just guessing again.

Why is the the soon to be released PSP Go! Console is only £20 cheaper than this new PS3 Slim Console. Shouldn’t the PSP Go! sell for no more that £180 if Sony are cutting the price of the PS3 series.

@ 148 and 150:
HDMI CEC is only optional in the specifications of HDMI 1.0-1.3. Or, to be more precise, CEC *wiring* within the HDMI plug is mandatory, but CEC *implementation* is optional.
Whether it’s called Viera Link, Bravia Sync, Kuro Link, Anynet, Aquos Link, etc. they’re all the same thing: HDMI CEC.
It doesn’t matter what brand your device is as long as it supports CEC, which the original PS3 does not. The question is: is the restriction a hardware one (which can’t be corrected) or purely a software one (which could be corrected).
If it was as simple as issuing a new firmware, I can’t imagine why Sony wouldn’t have done it already.
I have a Panasonic plasma, an Oppo Blu-Ray player and a Sony AVR, and they can all be controlled with each other’s remotes (I don’t use the feature myself since my Harmony One remote does a much better job).

Has slim PS3 got full backwards compatability?
Will existing PS3 get full backwards compatability via a patch?

@117:
did you read the conference, or did you just want to whine?
VidZone will be released in 11 more european countries in November, including Norway.
the VideoStore will be available from November, for UK/Ire/Ger/Fra/Spain with the rest of europe to follow soon after in 2010. i know people are complaining that their country is not listed yet, or why can’t all countries go together – those few countries make up the vast majority (over 80%) of the PS3 install base for the SCEE region, so it makes no business sense whatsoever to continue to withhold the services. a service like this requires many 3rd-party partnerships on a PER country basis to function, so it is difficult to get everyone to agree when content can be released. sony just can’t put up content wherever and whenever they like. cinema/DVD releases are often staggered across europe as well, so even when the videostore is available, i would expect to see a lot of regional variation. this situation is not unique to PS.

a pure software emulation solution for PS2 bc is a massive technical challenge not something that is “eminently fixable”. no PS3 model since the 60gb has had any PS2 architecture in it. they say it’s not happening, so you’ll have just have to get over it, i’m afraid.
katamari forever should be on the PSN this winter, but since it is published by namco-bandai, it’s not up to sony to pre-empt or reveal anything about it.
most games which have dedicated online servers work well, my broadband connection isn’t that fast (2mb/s) and i never get lag. games (like CoD4/5 for example) which use a host are more prone to lag, connection problems, and other issues, but it’s hardly the fault of the ps network if you get “host ended game”, “no capable host found”, or the host has an upload speed of 20K/s or whatever. some third parties do choose to have their own dedicated server farm (like EA does for battlefield), but even then they sometimes can underestimate the volume/demand which can result in problems until more servers are added. this happens on all platforms.

Plus, the Digital Comics service, is probably IP region locked as well isn’t? So probably no chance we can read in Europe the comics of for instance Jason Rubin, “Iron and the Maiden”, if his publishers decide to publish them for the PSP Digital Comics service.

Please talk to Skype and bring Skype into the XMB! Every PC or MAC, even really old ones, can handle Skype running in the background. PS3 should be able to do this too!

I think taking out Linux compatibility and saying PS2 compatibility is a definitely not happening is really going to harm sales for the slim PS3. The whole point of Linux compatibility was that it added something unique to the console, something the other 2 consoles don’t have, and everyone is screaming for PS2 compatibility, and we all know about the patent that converts emotion engine code into PS3 cell processor code, so not including PS2 compatibility is a huge mistake. These are things Sony want to include and keep in if they want to beat the competition, and they should really listen to fans on the internet, they usually know what these things require if they want to boost sales and increase user install base.

Why was OtherOS support really removed? I really hate those marketing quotes like ‘will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content’, it only seems to me that Sony have made yet another dumb move by removing yet another unique part of what made PS3 PS3. How about keeping your promises and stick with it or at least ADD options, not REMOVE them, even Microsoft doesn’t remove any options with their box…
Please tell the real reason (even if it’s too technical for most regular consumers) why the option was removed, because I can’t see a softwarewise reason as Sony still has to support it for the older units…
It seems that with every new SKU another function has been removed.. Not a good thing, and this only means that some people will not buy a new PS3 if theirs breaks…

– the emotion engine code is already in the old 60gb PS3s, but they have some PS2 hardware components for the graphics synthesizer chip, which have not been in any models since (including the slim) in order to reduce the manufacturing costs, and thus keep retail costs down. it’s all very well saying, “add what everyone wants and boost sales”. however, simultaneously everyone’s been saying “your console costs too much you need to lower the price or sales will suffer”. it doesn’t work both ways. if software emulation was a trivial matter i’m sure they would have done it, but apparently it is not. sony believes it can increase the install base on the PS3′s own merits. time will tell..

Oh. Enjoy the price drop, Europe.
Looks like Scandinavian territories, or at least Sweden, get to pay the same as for the current 80GB (no price drops announced, most retailers still sell it for the equiv of €360, and pre-order prices are on that level for the Slim also.)

Hey, you guys did an amazing job at gamescom, but I was wondering whether it would be possible to clear something up for me concerning the Video Store. I was wondering whether it will launch in November for the Republic of Ireland? I’ve heard yes from some sources and no from some others. Can you confirm whether it will or not? It would be super-extra-helpful!

Hmmm i must say that im pretty disapointet about the “new” PS3 slim.
1# You will have to buy an extra PS3 stant to get our PS3 upright, witch is extra money out of your poket.
2# Still only two USB ports.
3# Bad idea to remove the power contact behind the PS3, now you will have to crawl down behind your setup to pull our the power cord from the power outlet if your PS3 frezzes.
4# Gone are the touch buttons, this was one of the greatest things about the PS3, it gave it a feel of quality.
5# Linux is gone.
6# The nice black finish is gone, witch also gave it a quality finish.
7# Frontdraw to harddrive is unnessesary, because with 120GB, most people wount need to change harddrive, so this space could have been used to something better, like more USB ports.
So the only positive things about the new PS3 Slim is the lower power comnsumption and the smaller size, but thats not much of a remake, it more like a step backwards.

Well, sod the new hardware and boring little features.
Give the people what they really want: Backwards compatibility.
If it’s not announced soon for PS3 I’m selling mine, because the PS3 games and the pathetic online service aren’t worth it. I only got it because PS2 emulation had to be right around the corner and I wanted better picture quality from PS2 games on my LCD TV.

@3# Bad idea to remove the power contact behind the PS3, now you will have to crawl down behind your setup to pull our the power cord from the power outlet if your PS3 frezzes.
Press power button for 15~20sec and the PS3 will be forced to shut-down with ever kind of Freeze.

People don’t get your panties in a bunch – you can change the HDD.
What I missed were some local details – for me for instance it was very interesting to see that we’ll get BBC iPlayer and such directly supported from the XMB, but not only that, a lot of other countries get links to their equivalent services (including Dutch NOS, Australian ABC, Spanish rtve, and several others).
Ditto for vidzone – Benelux was specifically mentioned as well as Scandinavian countries to get it before the end of the year, but most European countries should be getting it soon.
Why not go see the conference for yourself in Home, in the Presentation Podium? It streams pretty good, and it is followed by a whole bunch of interviews. Though I’m guessing we’ll get these here and/or on PSN soon as well, but this is the place where you can watch it already (as of yesterday morning I think).

Are you shure about that, will the PS3 not just reset itself, not a shutdown..? And if so, then the button will have 3 funktions on/off, reset, shutdown..hmmmm would rather have the old power button, its also faster to use, rather than having to sit with your finder on the power button for 20 sekonds.

Previous PS3s
* Processor: 90nm IBM Processor (2006 Models), 65nm (2007 – 2008 Models)
Power Consumption: 380w (2006 – 2007), 280w (2008
PS3 “Slim” (CECH-2000)
* Processor: 45nm
Power Consumption: 250w
This is why i’m going to pick up a SLIM for sure!
The old ps3 gets too hot!
