MotorStorm has collaborated with VidZone to bring you a taste of The Festival in a brand new VidZone Playlist. The tracks featured showcase the diverse musicscape of The Festival and the attitude, aggression and intense pace that epitomizes MotorStorm.
Alan McDermott, Audio Manager at Evolution Studios, explains what he looks for when creating the soundtrack for a MotorStorm Festival, and what The Festival is all about.
I’m Alan McDermott and I’m here to tell you what goes into picking music for MotorStorm. This is not easy to describe. MotorStorm has one of the most eclectic and carefully chosen soundtracks for a racing game around. There’s a specific reason for this: MotorStorm is more than just a racing game. It’s a Festival of racing, music and partying hard.
The only thing that you need to understand in order to create a set-list for a MotorStorm Festival, is that MotorStorm is a festival of the insane. Thousands of people descend upon a completely unsuspecting location once a year and tear it up, some watch, some race, but all of them party. There’s no way to control what happens when thousands of fired-up lunatics unite in the same space. It’s a living, breathing event. It’s hard to call how it plays out. Anything could happen.
The only thing you can go on is a good understanding of what The Festival is, but when you get a feel for what it is, the hardest part of picking the soundtrack is done. So what is it..?
I can tell you that it’s Dirty. That it’s filthy. That it’s raucous. It’s full of attitude. It’s relentless. It’s a nihilistic tour de force. It’s fuelled by adrenaline. It’s chaotic. It’s angry. It’ll rip the doors off your car to cool down. It’ll pawn all your mom’s jewellery for $1. It’ll fill your bathtub with ketchup and wash the dog in it. It doesn’t care about the noise, and it won’t turn it down even though its 4am…
It’s a place where lunatics unite, to race by day, party by night.
The playlist is available in VidZone right now, so fire it up and check it out!
Go ahead and tell us what you think of the tracks in the games and suggest any artists, DJs, bands, tracks, etc. you’d like to see play The Festival in future.
The next Festival will arrive with an Arctic Edge a little later in the year, and you can bet that the soundtrack will be just as impactful and raucous as those that have gone before it.

Ben – thought you might wanna know.
Clicked an advert for the new Final Destination (which looks awesome btw – Final Destination is one of my favourite film series!) and it makes the browser run out of memory.
Not a lot of use having an ad that doesn’t work in the browser

Could you maybe make an official announcement about Vidzone coming to other EU countries? Could we maybe also know approximately when? End September? October?
Greetings from Luxembourg.

Poland is much bigger and there are much more PS3′s but we are out of Europe. No polish XMB, no polish leters and no VidZone for Poland. Can someone tell us why?

A few days back I received an advert for Final Destination after every song I played. I hoped it was a bizarre error. I logged in and out twice to see if it would help. I didn’t. I had to switch the service off and play music from my HDD instead.
I really like VidZone. I use it several times a week and used to use it when friends came round (but stopped doing so when the adverts started interrupting the playlists). However, the adverts are often too frequent and repetitive.
That said, some nights, there are no adverts. I don’t know why (maybe no one paid?), but on those nights (often at odd hours), the service is blissful, and I love it. However, at other times the adverts come thick and fast. Sometimes after every other song? Or even after every song? That’s unacceptable for me. I have to turn the service off.
Please, if anyone reads this who can make a difference, try to strike a good balance. I understand you need to create revenue from the service, but please find a way to do so that doesn’t make me throw my controller at the TV in frustration at hearing the same advert for the 30th time in a row. As it stands, the adverts are often too much.

Hi Hapimeses,
Sorry for the late reply. VidZone have never meant for adverts to be shown that often and after every video is totally unacceptable. We are trying to regulate this so that the adverts do not spoil the enjoyment of the service and also so that the same advert is not viewed multiple times by the same user.
If you are still having this problem please email playstation@vidzone.tv and we will try to fix it.
Apologies,
Ben

@14
Same, i used it tonight for an hour or so, and had G.I.Joe adverts literally after every song. But that’s the first time i have ever seen a proper playing advertisement.
Weird

VidZone is great, my only minor gripe with it is that it doesn’t have any Muse tracks on it yet! How can you miss out on possibly the worlds greatest live band!?
Concerning songs to be heard in Motorstorm, I think Muse fits the bill pretty well. Some of their older stuff like Stockholm Syndrome and Hysteria would fit in with the Festival theme quite well in my opinion.

I was listening to some of the MotorStorm music on the MotorStorm Jukebox in Home last night, so I decided to blow the dust off VidZone and check out the MotorStorm playlist.
There is no way to sugarcoat this so I’m just going to say it, the VidZone user interface and loading times are beyond a joke. Someone needs to sit down, at gun point if needed, and redesign the entire application for the PS3.
I’m going to uninstall VidZone today and won’t be installing again until I hear news that the application GUI has been vastly improved and the initial loading times have been significantly reduced.
Does Sony not have any quality control in place for these kind of applications?
Posted on 25 August, 2009 at 12:45 pm by Ben Creasey
Hi SiRobertson,
We will be adressing these issues very soon, probably not by redesigning the entire application though
but you won’t know if we’ve updated unless you keep updating VidZone or check back here.
