Space has always been a big part of the Ratchet series but for the first time, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time gives you the opportunity to travel freely across the universe blasting and exploring to your heart’s content.
Check out this trailer as the Creative Director at Insomniac Games, Brian Allgeier explains, there’s a lot waiting to be discovered out in space. Navigate your way through asteroid belts, land and investigate small moons, battle alien ships and upgrade your own vessel by collecting the mysterious Zoni. And whilst you’re busy exploring the cosmos, you can even listen to Space Radio, which plays loads of cool music along with funny clips and commercials!
One of our huge focus points on Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time has been exploration and replay value. This focus is highlighted by our space exploration gameplay, which allows you to fly Ratchet’s ship between the planets in the game – while landing on spherical moons and completing side quests. We put together this video with Creative Director Brian Allgeier that will give you a first look at the new space gameplay.
But don’t take our word for it! We also had IGN into our studio earlier this week to check it out and get some extensive hands-on in one of the space sectors – you can read all of their thoughts here.
One of our favorite parts of space gameplay is how it really rewards you for exploring. The various spherical moons contain Zoni, which allow you to upgrade your ship’s abilities and weapons, and are also required to face-off against our final uber-boss in replay mode (that’s right, hardcore fans, a special boss you’ll need to get beat to get the last trophy). There’s also a huge incentive to explore in that you can discover new mods for your constructo weapons. We’re also really excited because the designers have created some excellent platforming and hoverbooting moons –and some of them, especially later in the game, will challenge long-time platformer fans.
The other star of the show is Space Radio with its zany commercials, and movie trailers, and fun DJs (like Captain Slag and Rusty Pete on Pirate Radio). Fans paying attention to the news reports will also discover answers to some of their biggest questions about the Ratchet & Clank universe, providing plenty of incentive to tune in while you’re exploring space.
We’re excited about this brand new space gameplay as we are continuing to push hard to wrap up the game. For fans traveling to PAX in Seattle next week – make sure you stop by the Sony booth and check out both the Krell Canyon and Great Clock demos. We’ll also have Ratchet in costume, and we will be handing out the mega-popular Comic-Con swag inflatable wrenches. Creative Director Brian Allgeier will also be giving a presentation about the history of Ratchet & Clank weapons (along with some new ones) called Weapons 101. You can catch that presentation Friday, from 2-3pm in the Unicorn Theatre.
That’s all for now, hope you like the space gameplay. I’ll be happy to try and answer your questions about in the comments below!

To save people the trouble of having to navigate through the bloated and ad filled site that is IGN, here is a link to the video: http://tinyurl.com/mqn4vy

Wow that’s an impressive addition to an already impressive looking game. I was planning on getting this anyway as I’ve really enjoyed the other two PS3 games (I never played it on my PS2 funnily enough), but this just makes me want it more! Plus graphically it looks like a Pixar movie!
Both Insomniac and Naughty Dog are really doing Sony proud with what they are accomplishing with the hardware…

Looks great, I just want some dates for this and Uncharted, and news on any Collector’s Editions, that last part is all that is stopping me from pre-ordering

I’ve always loved the R&C games, and they’ve always been pretty large games – but this one looks like it’s going to be HUGE. Can’t wait to play it.

This is going to be without a doubt one of the best games of the year. I’m a huge fan of Insomniac, such a great dev studio.

UK release is listed as 30/10. game looks sharp, sony’s first party line-up is looking really solid for the coming months. i like the exploration/side-quest idea and gives the game more scope and playability, but i generally found the space combat in tools of destruction to be fairly annoying and interrupting. it’s like when developers put vehicle levels into FPS games.. if i wanted to take control of planes or motorvehicles i would have bought a flight-sim or racing game, but i like neither genre. still, i’m sure this will have it’s usual mix of inventive platforming and absurd weaponry.

I drooled over those screenshots. I’m really looking forward to this game, and I’ve never played Ratchet in my life.

Most anticipated game of 2009 for me. Absolutely loved the previous “full” game, have to play the PSN game soon to get over the worst waiting pains.
So is there a Ratchet plush toy coming?

I always wanted Ratchet and Clank as they are consistently brilliant games, and (thankfully with all the grey, browny games that we see all the time) the most colourful. Colour is something “next-gen” games have missed a number of times. Im glad Ratchet and Clank has an excellent palette.
Cant wait now with this Space Gameplay, and Im desperate to see what happens following Quest for Booty, which was a lovely little addition enabling them to test some new game mechanics possibly…? More of the same Insomniac.
Awesome.

“You realize this ship has an ejector seat, right?”
LOL
My mouth fell open when Brian started to explain the space exploration feature.
This will be so awesome ^^ .
But are we going to planets ourselves or do we still need to select them from a menu?
I’m the kind of person who will explore a lot and will do as I can. So I will find many Zoni and do many side-quests
.
I haven’t seen the possibility of upgrading your ship since Going Commando, glad to see it back.
You really saw that you ship was ‘evolving’ and I liked it so much.
The space combat looks fun too.
Visiting those moons is something that I remember from Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal.
I just hope that the environment remains fun (the ‘space’ – mostly green & black).

Is there supposed to be a link to a trailer, or am I missing it?
Sounds great and looking forward to it, looks like it’s shaping up to be another fantastic R&C game! Space radio sounds interesting as well.

this looks great an all, but i have a question: is the space gameplsy on a 2D plane, or will it be completely 3D free roam like the space gameplay we saw in R&C2: going commando??

According to the video in which Brian Allgeier explaines ‘space exploration’: Yes, it will be 3D and free roam.
I keep making posts here lol.

if it is 3D free roam that makes me want it even more
it just goes to show how far insomniac (and all other first and second party PS3 developers) go to really show how poerful the PS3 is. its amazing what they have done.
