Nearly everyone has played or seen Combat2600 on the Atari or Battle City on the NES. Here at Gameloft, we wanted to revisit an older but very popular gameplay style for consumers.
Battle Tanks features World War II tanks that face off against each other in hopes to blow the other to smithereens. You can play against the AI or co-op with a friend in Campaign Mode to overcome 50 maze and paint ball-like levels. There’s also a fun multi-player option also allows two to four people to challenge each other in Death Match modes or Capture the Flag mode.
Nothing beats blasting through walls with rockets, scorching enemies with flame throwers and carefully calculating the trajectory of bullets to win battles. The controls are simple: the left stick moves your tank and the L2 and R2 buttons are used for firing. The aiming guide is highlighted when you hold down the L1 button and comes in extremely handy when you’re trying to stealthily eliminate enemies on the field. To reduce the waiting time when a player dies, we added a new feature: Gun Turrets! When you’ve lost all your lives, you still can play and help your partner win the game.
As soon as an early version of Battle Tanks was installed on our PS3 test kit, it quickly became the most popular attraction in the Gameloft Studio. Everyone who passed by was drawn to the game’s colorful graphics and intuitive gameplay. During a recent office gathering, Battle Tanks was main party attraction. Crowds gathered and stood in line to watch folks challenge each other and have the chance to play themselves.
Battle Tanks captures all the youthful fun you can imagine. It is available on PSN right now and is priced at £7.99/€9.99.
The images below depict the graphical evolution of Battle Tanks for the PSN.
We initially started off by drafting a few futuristic concept styles (human vs. alien invasion).
We then considered using a 2D background, but quickly found that it did not provide the effect we wanted, so we added a real terrain.
We also considered the idea of creating a child-like environment that featured tanks made from cardboard, rivers and lakes made from pipes and obstacles from toys left behind.
None of the styles above matched what we wanted to create for audiences. So the Production Team decided to take a different approach and create a semi-realistic graphical style with cartoonish tanks.
We then fined tuned it even more and decided to remove the cartoony aspects to provide more realism with the graphics.
We liked the look and feel of the terrain but decided that realistic tanks inspired from the WWII era would be a nice touch. Below are a few concepts we drafted.
Ultimately, all the graphic aspects tied in well together and gave us a foundation for what we wanted to bring to the PS3. Below is the final result!

Oh, I missed this one. I want….
Questions though:
What PS3 features are used in Battle Tanks? Do we have custom music, screenshots and video capture?
Also, I’m looking at your sreenshots there and they are 1200 x 673?!!? Is this a proper 1080p game or is it upscaled? TBH the screenshots seem not to do the game much justice, there are artifacts and colour bleeding all over them.
Help please before I pay up.

i wouldnt mind knowing about some of the features like video capture aswell. i reckon its not used too much in PS3 games i think there only about 5 and i personally would like to see more games have the video capture and upload ability rather than using easy cap to record video’s and upload them to youtube.

Hi me again.
While looking for more info, your site Gameloft has Battle Tanks listed @ £9.99.
Just FYI.

The image above the WWII tanks is a photoshopped image of the map arena_lumberyard for Team Fortress 2..

Firstly it’s a great game… Last few levels are very very hard.
Secondly, you might want to upload some screenshots with a higher colour depth, because those last few images look awful and really aren’t doing your game any justice.

Looks like a lot of fun, been thinking of picking this up as it is a decent price, but didn’t know what to make of it.
This blog post has certainly enlightened me though. I like the genre (WWII) and coop is great plus so you’ve sold me on this one Gameloft, well done.
More of this please SCEE.

Yeah, someone must have screwed up with the images, I can’t imagine the game looking like that on the PS3?
Also why no more then 4 players locally?

Yep, something has definitely gone wrong with your ‘final results’ – it looks like you’ve converted them to 256 colours or something!
I liked the old ‘aim your tank’ type games where you had to adjust for wind and stuff, but this game looks more like a cat and mouse type game? I would really need a demo of it before I consider a purchase…
Also it’s interesting to see the stages of development a game goes through, it seems from the screenshots that the final maps a more artificially map like, whereas the earlier ones had a more natural and realistic 3D appearance to them. I suppose symmetrical top-down maps are needed for gameplay reasons though. Personally I quite like the look of the kids bedroom design for some reason, there’s just something about it that stands out from the others.

It’s good to get a bit of info on this game as it just seemed to appear on the store without warning. I really do love the graphical style of some of the games on PSN at the moment. Fat Princess looks just beautiful. However I’d really like the option of playing a demo before purchasing. Why isn’t one available?

Yeah same for me….
Looks interesting, not seen many reviews.
But is a demo too much to ask rather than gamble 8 pounds.
I mean demo were so common on the previous generations. Now there is the ultimate demo system with PSN and there are hardly any demos.
Do games developers expect you to gamble on a few screen shots on an unknown game?
Maybe for titles under a fiver but this needs a demo.
if the game is good surely a demo means more sales??

Needs a demo
Needs at least a video
Won’t buy it until that happens.

Why do developers post these topics and then sit back and don’t reply to any comments???
Surely they are at work monitoring the posts and looking at the feedback.
It is after all an exercise to drum up some press and sales for the title.

^ Agreed.
Blogs are for user and blogger interaction.

@FBZ1501 I totally agree.
This is not so much a blog as an an ordinary website.
Agree with many others it needs a demo as there are too many overpriced turkeys on psn store.
I did love Combat on the Atari so I am hopeful this game will be retro remake classic.

The EU blog is terrible.
We rarely get interaction between us and the powers that be.
We get constant updates about stuff we care little about (singstar, buzz comps and battle tanks) then when, whilst trying to make the post more interesting by way of comment, we get no response.

I’ve got this game on the Wii, it came with the remote. Wii Play it’s called, quite popular.

@sparced
Having spent the past week playing Battle Tanks i can assure you it’s so much more of a “game” than Wii Play’s Tanks game.
Just briefly…
– AI is far better
– The weapons and pickups (like sheilds, homing missles, invisibility, etc..) add so much depth
– Gameplay is very fast and frantic
– The levels differ a lot, with dirt slowing you down, teleporting through potrals (not to mention the cool firing through them) and the desctructive elements.
– Alongside the big campaign mode, local battle modes you have the online mode.
In short, it’s a good game. Needs a demo to show itself off really. I’d say for a fiver it would have been a ‘not to be missed’ purchase, but for the £8 it’s pretty good value.

@ onlineatron, with the obvious exception of Mike Kebby – who is quite frankly the best ‘feature’ of this blog!
Problem is articles like this are cut from the US Blog, so the content owner didn’t necessarily publish it here in person so couldn’t reply.
I still think in general (helped hugely by Mike) the EU blog has a higher response rate than the US blog. Whoever posts an article should make a point of spending 10 minutes reading the comments an hour or so after posting – even if it’s just the first page – and give a minimum or 2 or 3 replies to the best questions/comments.
I think the main problem is the posters need to be careful what they say as they are representing the views of SCEE as this is not a personal blog, so although we may not always get direct replies in the comments section that doesn’t mean they’re not being read – look at the Firmware 3.0 article, 800 replies giving SCEE a direct line to consumer feeling about the update – these were consolidated, processed, and will (hopefully) later today become an official response and FAQ from SCEE. You can’t argue with that, and in some ways is better than responses being lost in the comments pages – look at how often poor Mike has to repeat himself!

@ CodeMonkey_UK, thanks for the summary I must admit Wii Play Tanks crossed my mind when I saw the screenshots too. And you’re also right about the price, for a fiver I’d have probably taken a punt on it but at £8 it needs a demo to convince me.

I like these tank games, I kind of hoped this was going to be like Tanaris, one of the first SOE multiplayer online games, I played that game to death on dial-up, the replay value was exceptional, until the hackers got a hold of it.
I dream of the day that someone takes that game up to date and releases it for this generation of console, it’s a sure fire winner.
