Many of you have been asking why we haven’t responded to your complaints about last week’s 3.0 update until now. Sorry it’s taken us a while to get back to you – this is obviously an emotive subject and there have been a lot of issues raised surrounding the release, so we wanted to make sure we could come back to you with a comprehensive response that answers your most frequently asked questions.
I don’t like the “Fizz”. How do I turn it off?
To turn the fizz off, go to the Theme Settings under Settings on the XMB, you can choose different themes from here. “Classic” is the default theme without the fizz.
Where’s the game start chime gone? Why would you remove it?
One of the reasons we removed the PS3 jingle is that it was created to indicate the start of a game, but now we’re offering non-game content such as Vidzone in addition to games. More importantly though, this change makes the loading time a bit quicker than before, which we think will be a noticeable benefit for all game users.
The BBC iPlayer icon hasn’t appeared on the XMB. How can I get it?
There are 2 criteria for the presence of the iPlayer icon on the XMB:
(1) A PSN account or guest account as a UK resident
(2) A PS3 console sold in the UK. If you don’t have either of them, the icon will not show up. You can access the BBC iPlayer without the icon, by using the PS3 browser. The quickest way to get around it, is to type “iplayer” in the Google search shortcut on the XMB and click “iplayer” from the search result. You will be redirected to the PS3 special site of iPlayer, where you can then press “Select” to add to your bookmark.
For a better experience in the future, we are looking at the possibility of removing point (2). However (1) is required to identify your country of residence.
I don’t like the size of the font and the icons. Why can’t I change it back to its old size?
Based on your feedback, we are looking at the possibility of making the changes optional.
The US and Japan have a few Dynamic Themes available already. Where are ours?
The Dynamic Themes were supplied to all three regions at the same time, but unfortunately, due to the complexities of the PAL region’s PlayStation Store publishing process, they missed our publishing window last week. (Remember, we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages, so it’s more difficult for us to publish last minute content than it is for either the US or Japan). We can confirm that some Dynamic Themes will be made available on the EU Store this week, and we have a little surprise prepared especially for our PAL readers that we hope you’ll agree is worth the wait!
I used to be able to surf the net and listen to music simultaneously. Now I can’t. Why?
The PS3 extended the upsampling capability to audio tracks stored on HDD and storage media with v3.00. Some function on the XMB such as the internet browser and photo gallery outputs with 48KHz only so you need to set audio outputs as 48Khz to enjoy music and net surfing.
The first thing I see when I turn my PS3 on is adverts. What does this offer me?
It’s not just about adverts — the primary role of the “What’s New” screen is to get you into the game more quickly. You’ll be able to jump straight into the last three games or applications that you’ve been using. It’s basically acts as a short-cut to the games that are resident on the HDD, so that they can be automatically booted up rather than having to go via the game selection icons on the XMB. In addition, “What’s New” will give you a chance to discover some of the best deals on offer, read about the hottest stories currently making news across the web or even give you a heads up about some exclusive content our own EU Blog. We’re planning to improve “What’s New” in the future with some exciting content and customisation, so we eagerly await your feedback and ideas.
Uncharted freezes ever since 3.00 was released. Is there a fix coming soon?
We’re aware of the problem with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune following the latest system software update and have a team working hard to isolate the issue. We’ll update further information here on the blog, as and when we get it. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.
–
Well guys, I hope that’s helped answer some of your questions. Thanks to all those of you who have provided positive feedback on 3.0.
As a wise person once said, “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time” — We love hearing everyone’s opinion so keep the comments coming!

Only one reply today? You need to get serious about this Sony, your customers certainly have. We need more information than you have given, half the complaints have not been addressed. You’ve ruined the interface I’ve enjoyed using since March 23rd 2007 and I want it fixed! Nobody asked for these changes. Don’t feel you need to fix things that aren’t broken.
Does the lack of responses mean you are going to wait in silence, hoping this just blows over? Come on! The game startup chime must be returned, the PS Store should not be shoved in our faces everywhere we go (we know how to access it and we know it’s updated on Thursday – that’s all that’s needed!), and all other 3.0 “upgrades” should be made optional or done away with completely. The PS3 is a shadow of it’s former self, and all it took was a single download.
Look at the overall response to 3.0 all over the internet. You’ve upset easily 50% of your customers, if not more. This is an issue that requires immediate action! Please. Thanks.

I really like 3.0 . I love the sparkles and dynamic themes (I’ve even nabbed my unsername in Japanese to get the Afrika theme). I like that things can still be deselected if you don’t want them – eg I don’t want to boot into What’s New, but I do want to be able to go to it when I want to.
If you look at how the PS3 has improved since launch (Day one, 60Gb BC version) the firmware updates have been immense. Thanks SCEE, now go demand some respect for the EU PS3′ers with your overlords!

In firmware 3.1 I whish there would be :
* Filling in the few missing extended latin characters in PS3 font
* The ability to select Vietnamese as spoken language (in PSN profile)
* Last.fm scrobbling support

The ‘what’s new section’ is all about adverts; the very first row that appears isn’t my recent games it is adverts.
An example; today I took inFamous out its box started my PS3 and inserted the disc. After I turned the TV on and the first thing I saw where the two week old adverts for Fat Princess etc. I then tabbed across to the games menu where I got the PSN Store icon and had to tab through that to get to my actual game. So I had to pass through two pieces of advertising to get to my game.
I actually think the idea of PSN Store links to specific parts of the Store is good. But, they should be at the bottom of each menu structure not above the actual content i.e. below the game I’ve already bought and want to play. Even better allow users to select how menus are ordered, or create custom XMB menus.
My problem with 3.0 is that the advertising is very intrusive, in my example your adverting gets in the way of my gaming. The ‘what’s new menu’ doesn’t even allow you to set the period how far back you want the adverts. Hence we’re all still seeing two week old advert, which if anything demonstrates how sparse the EU PSN Store content is. Please tone the adverts down, just a little.

I am one that likes the “fizz” and you covered the things about the fonts/icon sizes but I have some other things that weren’t covered in the blog post:
- An option to remove that box around the time & info area in the upper right hand side of the screen.
- I like the blur when selecting things but maybe options to tweak it with different levels of blur.
- Random question regarding dynamic themes: I’d love to see one similar to the PS2 clock with all the wicked reflections and refractions, would look awesome as a theme!

Thanks for your support Mr. Bowles and company.
I have a question though. Ever since I’ve bought my first Ps3, one feature I’ve always wished was optional was the ‘beep’ noise once you turn it on. This can be especially annoying if the unit crashes, and I have to listen to it go off 3 more times in succession.
I really like to sometimes play my ps3 late at night, or early in the morning when everyone’s still asleep. But when Uncharted or the internet, etc crashes, these beeps can be really ear piercing when no other noises are goin on.
Can you please make it optional in a new firmware release? I just don’t understand it’s purpose…
Thanks again.

The freezing problem is not only with Uncharted, it is with LBP and some other games as well since the latest update.
Where’s the game start chime gone? Why would you remove it?
It is a reasonable decision, but it should be made optional for the PS3 owners to have that chime or not. I think that makes everyone pleased. =)

Really like the new Firmware. Had no problems with recent games ive been playing.
Dynamic Backgrounds is a nice feature, although the default one is not really the best color
(btw: Why is there still no chance to choose a black background? think the color fits the ps3 so good ^^)
As mentioned the only thing that should be changed are the grey boxes in the friend list. they look… yeah you know, not really good

Posted on 9 September, 2009 at 3:49 pm by SpiderMike_X
To be honest I like 3.00 and I understand decisions were made to please certain groups, however they should have been released with options to negate the changes for those unaffected by how they layout was before.
On a different note, it should be clear by now that no matter what whoever is in control adds to the FW it isn’t enough so my suggestion is that in future you ask the community what they want, take THAT to the chalk board and put it in. WE’RE the ones that are using it, playing it, living with the system, and not a bunch of suits in an office merely “talking” gaming, so ask US what we want, we’ll give you feedback and then you just toddle off and develop it.
Bish, bash, bosh – everyone is happy for a time.
Its either that, or you throw a bunch of random stuff that merely amounts to window dressing, that nobody really cares for and you then get a torrent of disrespect on the blog and the forums, all saying pretty much the same thing – “We hate it”.
Have a think about it.

Has anyone else reported game saves being lost or altered following Firmware 3.00. I was rather annoyed by my fairly complete Fallout 3 save reverting to level 1 where I was just leaving the vault. No idea why else this could have happened.
Just thought i’d check.

If any of you idiots stopped moaning for one second you might realise that: -
a) 500 people moaning on a forum does not equal over 50% of PS3 users. The vast majority are happy
b) They may have plans for those little grey boxes around the friends list… Whats to say that they are not connected to the premium avatars we are due to get? Maybe they will not always be grey!
c) A missing chime is not the end of the world as we know it…. I would spend less time on worring about the chime and more on getting a life.

I just wanted to comment on the quote you put that you can not make everyone happy. I fully agree on that. However, you can maximize the happiness of people by being flexible. The wonderful thing about software is you can provide options to choose. For example, give option to users to change the size of fonts, color and so on. Let users to even customize xmb how it displays, for example xmb is place on the top horizontally, you can provide options to set it bottom horizontally or left vertically or right vertically. The BEST solution to make most of the people happy to give them options, possibilities, and customization. This way not only you will improve the experience and usability but also get less complains.

I’ve been reading the comments and i see that quite a few people are asking when/if Sony will support loading your own music in all the PS3 games. It’s up to the developer if they want to support loading songs from the HDD, not sony. For instance, Burnout Paradise already supports loading your own songs when playing online (via the Easy Drive menu). It was added with the Cagney Update of the game. So, basically you should ask the game developers for this feature, not sony. (^_^ )
532
Posted on 9 September, 2009 at 4:18 pm by ShlizarAxis
Next to that, and this is my personal opinion, people who are flaming Sony or the people on this board for “a lack of repsonse”, “an unacceptable update because they are missing the loading chime, or suddenly have grey boxes in their friendslist, etc” or “find the PSN Content updates pathetic because we didn’t get any (free) dynamic themes” should chill, seriously… It’s not the end of the world or something… We, as consumers, can “demand” all we want, but sony does not have to drop down on their knees and give us everything we want. They are doing their best to please the consumers with free firmware updates, a free PSN with weekly updates, etc, etc. Their “best” is probably something most of won’t agree with me (and that’s ok, you are entitled to your own opinion), but nonetheless, we ARE getting firmware updates, weekly PSN content, etc. There is always room for improvement.

thanks sony for the quick response. =)
some guys out there are exaggerating, the firmware is not that bad..
but i would like this function to be implemented:
(Quoted from Zuler, @45)
”
2) If possible, please make an option to revert back to the old settings, where the jingle when you start up a game comes back, and the beginning boot up sequence music is back to the way it was? Just an option, let people who don’t want the jingle to be heard have their choice as well.”
thanks again.

Nevertheless, if the new firmware is responsible for freezing up games like uncharted, then sony is required to fix it. However, only if the firmware can be held responsible for breaking it in the first place. That doesn’t mean that for instance the friendslist is “broken” and requires fixing. We can only suggest that they change it or give the consumers the ability to customize it, not demand that they “fix” it. It isn’t “broken”. A lot of people just think that it’s ugly. (^_^ )

In future please add a disclaimer to the PS3 packaging stating the following:
“Enjoyment of this product may be compromised at any time by forced updates containing random, arbitrary and seemingly pointless changes to your system that were neither requested nor required. Sony Computer Entertainment will take no responsibility, provide no explanation, nor will they fix any of these changes. Any requests for them to do so will not be acknowledged. Purchase at your own risk.”
Again,
- Restore game startup chime.
- Remove PS Store icon from Games.
- Fix friends list.
But even more pressing,
- Answer us.

Being myself a software developer I also have been involved many User Interface, and usability project, I can recommend SCEE to really put some serious effort on providing a possibility to users of customization of XMB, look and feel of user interface. This way I can bet that you will find your customers more satisfied. And in practice when implementing in software it is not very difficult, you just need to pay attention on this feature more. I don’t say ps3 user interface does not have possibility of customization, but thing there is much more can be done….

PlayDude77 they have been doing the same wrong thing for years and don’t seem to want to change it.
The US residents always get everything before us if we even get them at all.
Easy solution = make a english psn store for europeans so that they dont have anymore excuses on why they couldn’t release a certain item.
I live in sweden and english is pretty much our second language and we are fluent in it.
The cost for the items can’t be hard to set for diffrent countries can it? They deal with numbers in diffrent countries they do sales in every single day so I dont buy that as an argument.
ShlizarAxis it has nothing to do with the free dynamic themes. It has to do with sony making big promises and failing at it. Even if it is a small thing like a dynamic theme they even fail to deliver that to europe. It’s always us who get cut off for some reason.
One thing I learned from working with this kind of stuff myself is that changes won’t happen unless someone complains about it.

In all fairness to Sony – it may be a free world (or is it, dependent on where you live) but these are Sony’s servers and therefore Sony’s rules. Considering the amount of sheer hyperbole and misplaced anger, I’m surprised they are as polite as they are.

ok sony had better reply to this: why is it that i should have to use my web browser to access the bbc iplayer when the reason i have an 04 model is because my ps3 broke within warrenty and sony replaced it with what i was told was an identical one that did everything my old one did or wuld have done in the future yet that is clearly incorrect, it is purely the principle of not having what i should have on my ps3. I feel that point to should be revised not possibly but definatly revised.
P.S. [DELETED] where u guys on when you thoght that the friends list would be a gd idea?? whoever designed that should be fired, or was it the cleaner sneaking into the office no wonder you ddnt show it in any of the pre-release videos…

@ ShlizarAxis, thats right it is up to developers to make in game music, but whats wrong with sony mandating it like trophys. it cant be that hard to put custom music in as other developers have done it. i would prefer music in all games from 2010 than the way it is now. same as cross game chat i don’t care if old games don’t support it, so long as we get it.
