Firmware 3.00 Q&A

Many of you have been asking why we haven’t responded to your complaints about last week’s 3.0 update until now. Sorry it’s taken us a while to get back to you – this is obviously an emotive subject and there have been a lot of issues raised surrounding the release, so we wanted to make sure we could come back to you with a comprehensive response that answers your most frequently asked questions.

I don’t like the “Fizz”. How do I turn it off?

To turn the fizz off, go to the Theme Settings under Settings on the XMB, you can choose different themes from here. “Classic” is the default theme without the fizz.

Where’s the game start chime gone? Why would you remove it?

One of the reasons we removed the PS3 jingle is that it was created to indicate the start of a game, but now we’re offering non-game content such as Vidzone in addition to games. More importantly though, this change makes the loading time a bit quicker than before, which we think will be a noticeable benefit for all game users.

The BBC iPlayer icon hasn’t appeared on the XMB. How can I get it?

There are 2 criteria for the presence of the iPlayer icon on the XMB:

(1) A PSN account or guest account as a UK resident

(2) A PS3 console sold in the UK. If you don’t have either of them, the icon will not show up. You can access the BBC iPlayer without the icon, by using the PS3 browser. The quickest way to get around it, is to type “iplayer” in the Google search shortcut on the XMB and click “iplayer” from the search result. You will be redirected to the PS3 special site of iPlayer, where you can then press “Select” to add to your bookmark.

For a better experience in the future, we are looking at the possibility of removing point (2). However (1) is required to identify your country of residence.

I don’t like the size of the font and the icons. Why can’t I change it back to its old size?

Based on your feedback, we are looking at the possibility of making the changes optional.

The US and Japan have a few Dynamic Themes available already. Where are ours?

The Dynamic Themes were supplied to all three regions at the same time, but unfortunately, due to the complexities of the PAL region’s PlayStation Store publishing process, they missed our publishing window last week. (Remember, we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages, so it’s more difficult for us to publish last minute content than it is for either the US or Japan). We can confirm that some Dynamic Themes will be made available on the EU Store this week, and we have a little surprise prepared especially for our PAL readers that we hope you’ll agree is worth the wait!

I used to be able to surf the net and listen to music simultaneously. Now I can’t. Why?

The PS3 extended the upsampling capability to audio tracks stored on HDD and storage media with v3.00. Some function on the XMB such as the internet browser and photo gallery outputs with 48KHz only so you need to set audio outputs as 48Khz to enjoy music and net surfing.

The first thing I see when I turn my PS3 on is adverts. What does this offer me?

It’s not just about adverts — the primary role of the “What’s New” screen is to get you into the game more quickly. You’ll be able to jump straight into the last three games or applications that you’ve been using. It’s basically acts as a short-cut to the games that are resident on the HDD, so that they can be automatically booted up rather than having to go via the game selection icons on the XMB. In addition, “What’s New” will give you a chance to discover some of the best deals on offer, read about the hottest stories currently making news across the web or even give you a heads up about some exclusive content our own EU Blog. We’re planning to improve “What’s New” in the future with some exciting content and customisation, so we eagerly await your feedback and ideas.

Uncharted freezes ever since 3.00 was released. Is there a fix coming soon?

We’re aware of the problem with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune following the latest system software update and have a team working hard to isolate the issue. We’ll update further information here on the blog, as and when we get it. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.

Well guys, I hope that’s helped answer some of your questions. Thanks to all those of you who have provided positive feedback on 3.0.

As a wise person once said, “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time” — We love hearing everyone’s opinion so keep the comments coming!

Much appreciated.

… Now what’s the surprise theme on Thurs? :)

    Jem Alexander 8 September, 2009 @ 9:18 pm

    That would be telling!

I’m replying to this comment so that you all see it — Mark will be replying to more of your responses in the morning.

thanks for the answers guys, its good to hear that you are in the process of fixing things!

samich2007 8 September, 2009 @ 7:06 pm   3

thanks :)

Game start chime should be at least optional!!! I loved it and it’s really hard to live when it’s gone :(

JacktehKnife 8 September, 2009 @ 7:06 pm   5

Do you guys plan to speed up the in game XMB anytime? Thanks!

Here you go seany1 lol, its here!!!

I Love it

iccaldwell 8 September, 2009 @ 7:08 pm   8

Are there any plans for HD with the iplayer?

Thats helpful, thanks guys.

DeathroW22 8 September, 2009 @ 7:08 pm   10

Anything on the friends list? That is my only problem with the update, love all the other changes.

Sigh… you guys have to revert to the old userlist… its horrible now :(

Apart from the system breaking things that 3.0 brought, which I luckliy haven’t encountered. I have no real problem with the new firmware.

One thing I will ask pleasently before you get bombarded with hate; what are the grey boxes around our friends in the friend list for? Can we changed their colour to something different?

Thank you and good luck answering what will no doubt be an angry post! :)

    Mark Bowles 9 September, 2009 @ 10:15 am

    Thanks for the comment.

We know that a lot of you have commented on the friends list and we are currently talking go the Powers That Be about addressing your concerns

What’s the surprise!

Ooo its like christmas

what about the big silly boxes in the friends list?

What about Cross game voice chat? is it ever coming?

Why does the XMB have 2 links to the PSN store? 3 links when the video store comes out?

Mon-Da-Hoops 8 September, 2009 @ 7:09 pm   15

Good we finally got some answers but the excuse about the themes seems a little weak. However can you confirm you are looking at possible problems update 3.0 had with dual shock 3 controllers? ive heard of a few cases (including myself) where it worked fine before and know doesn’t?

milnerant 8 September, 2009 @ 7:10 pm   16

I’ve always wondered if the maximum amount of friends will be increased again?

Audioboxer 8 September, 2009 @ 7:10 pm   17

Thanks for some answers, but no updates on what you guys plan to do with the friends list?

Mon-Da-Hoops 8 September, 2009 @ 7:10 pm   18

Also the grey boxes are annoying yes its not an immediate concern but it would be nice for them to dissapear

Chibber23 8 September, 2009 @ 7:10 pm   19

What about the ugly grey friend boxes introduced in 3.00? Will they be changed or become an optional feature? I dont mind everything else, but I struggle to understand why you would mess up the sleek contenuity of the XMB design like you have with the revamped friends list!

Bearskopff 8 September, 2009 @ 7:10 pm   20

Huzzah! I, like many users here, am pleased to finally hear of the things you’ve taken on board. Nice one PS Blog. Two things though, if you don’t mind answering them? (Pretty please) 😀

1.) Avatars. Is there a specific date yet on when we’ll see some more being released?

2.) Have you got any official prices for the Dynamic Themes?

Bearskopff :)

Although I wish we could get more “whats new” content like the Americans do, and the news ticker they have is pretty helpful.

And get rid of that dang option two for iPlayer. I think my PS3 is french :(

a) What about the ugly friends list?

b) If you are gonna make these changes – make ’em quick.

Other than that good job :)

ilikemonkeys 8 September, 2009 @ 7:11 pm   23

Still leaves some questions unaddressed. For instance the friends list… it looks absolutely dreadful and the graphic design is poorly done. The majority of users don’t like having the PS Store everywhere they go. Shouldn’t it be about getting to the content first? Stop pulling the wool over our eyes, we know that this is about advertising when it’s the first icon we see every time we move over. I suppose this is the kind of BS we have to deal with while PSN is free.

Glad to hear you’re hard at work fixing things! Thanks for the update!

addyjones1234 8 September, 2009 @ 7:11 pm   25

ohh a surprise, maybe just another dynamic theme?

What’s the point in having these Playstation Store and What New ‘shortcuts’ if they aren’t going to be updated every week?

The Playstation Store shortcut wasn’t updated last week but maybe that was because of the lack of any decent content??!!

Laziness on SCEE’s part?? Most likely the answer to this question.

CalvertCrew 8 September, 2009 @ 7:12 pm   27

Can we have the option to change the colour of the grey boxes on the friends list?

Right, but what about the ugly friend list?

Chibber23 8 September, 2009 @ 7:13 pm   29

Also, since 3.00 Resistance 2 freezes to a black screen after the incogneto logo has come up and has to be powered off with the switch at the back to get back to the XMB. Only issue I’ve realy had after any update so far

addyjones1234 8 September, 2009 @ 7:13 pm   30

oh and well done to SCEE for a change rather than the usual “we are looking into it” cliche

*sorry for double post i was excited by the surprise :)

flyingsupernerds 8 September, 2009 @ 7:13 pm   31

Any chance you can confirm or deny whether the latest firmware update is the reason why my PlayStation 3 died, Mark? If not, any chance you can provide a time frame on when the next update will be released?

My PlayStation 3’s chance of working again kinda depends on it. Thanks.

Great, expect one of the biggest complaints was never mentioned. The friends list…. :(

And with the web browsing + music issue etc… Why not just an “Auto” mode? so people dont have to change it everytime

kingofscotland 8 September, 2009 @ 7:13 pm   33

Appreciate the communication, thats all most people want some honest communication.

I am happy with 3.0 apart from 2 things.

1) Don’t have iplayer icon as I have a refurb 60gb from Sony which is a EU 04 model, so hope you do remove step 2 as stated.

2) The friends list – the grey boxes are really ugly and spoil the lovely XMB – and I love the fizz BTW

‘“What’s New” will give you a chance to discover some of the best deals on offer, read about the hottest stories currently making news across the web or even give you a heads up about some exclusive content our own EU Blog.’

I think you’ll find you’ve just defined an advert.

If I want adverts, sorry ‘news’ I’ll fire up the internet, not my console. Give us an option to disable them please. Oh, and one link to the Store would suffice.

marcindpol 8 September, 2009 @ 7:14 pm   35

what about all the serious issues the 3.0 firmware causes???
you were even not able to tell us if the next fw. is going to fix those and when is coming?

this is a joke!

Suzzopher 8 September, 2009 @ 7:14 pm   36

Can’t wait to get rid of those ugly big fonts 😀

ollybobs27 8 September, 2009 @ 7:14 pm   37

Symonator 8 September, 2009 @ 7:14 pm   38

and its took you a week to tell us this>?

You have missed all the important questions and answered what you feel like…

what about the big ugly out of place boxes in the friends list?
They are horrible.

What about the freezing of the ps3 when your just sitting on the XMB?

You just don’t care about anything it seems, very selective answers, you guys need to wake up -!!

Chibber23 8 September, 2009 @ 7:14 pm   39

Oh, I’ve just realised the news ticker hasn’t appeared on my XMB since the update… You may want to add an on/off control if only for the benefit of those it’s not worked for!

SiRobertson 8 September, 2009 @ 7:15 pm   40

Thanks for the response guys, you’ve covered most of issues but the Store icons haven’t been addressed, no doubt the SHOUTERS will make you well aware of that though. 😉

Could we be getting the LBP theme for free? That would be very cool indeed.

Just to puck up on point 2 of the iplayer, as far as I know models affected like cecho4 have been sold in retail stores in the uk, additionally scee are handing out cecho4 models as remanufactured units. Step 1 I could understand but the predicament of two isnt the fault of the consumers, but sony and the retailers.

I do hope 2 is removed in the future otherwise it could cause more problems for us.

I just revisited the Theme and its great for old people like me. Can We have bigger fonts and boxes for the senile please?

Usual banal and trite answers , telling us nothing we did not already know, and using the ever usefull excuse of localisation ,What about the friends list grey boxes, what about the other game freeze (Batman AA amongst others) problems, a whats new that has not updated yet and does not include all games in latest played (Batman AA for one) . i expect i’ve missed a few other things out but i’m so frustrated now it beggars belief , how long has 3.0 been on the drawing boards surely it cannot take that long to put a few themes on a a few different stores at a few different prices

It’s TRUE you can’t please EVERYONE 😀
I liked the update. It was just the Moving Themes we didn’t get made me mad 😀 Oh well, can’t wait to see what the EU PSN Store brings this week 😛

Thanks for responding about this!

I myself have two things I hope you can implement:

1) When you get a message, the box image comes up in the top right box, nice. But if we get more than one, can you put a number to show how many are unread? Also, show if we have a text chat invite?

2) If possible, please make an option to revert back to the old settings, where the jingle when you start up a game comes back, and the beginning boot up sequence music is back to the way it was? Just an option, let people who don’t want the jingle to be heard have their choice as well.

Thank you!

patatdrolleke83 8 September, 2009 @ 7:17 pm   47

Nice Q&A =)

DJ91rocks 8 September, 2009 @ 7:17 pm   48

Thanks for the information…most of the questions I needed to know have been answered. Looking forward to finding out what the “little surprise prepared especially for our PAL readers that we hope you’ll agree is worth the wait” is.

I like most of the new FW 3.0 except the friends list, seem more like a place than anything right now. The blur effect when entering sub menus is nice but maybe you don’t have to over do it? Sometimes less is more.
Also Flower froze for me yesterday, never happened before (haven’t tried any of the other known freezing games).

Blasteroids 8 September, 2009 @ 7:18 pm   50

I, for one, applaud SCEE for its dedication to translate dynamic Zebras into 8 different languages so it can placed on 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies.

Carnivius_Prime 8 September, 2009 @ 7:18 pm   51

Uncharted freezes? I’ve been playing it a fair bit since updating the firmware and haven’t had even one problem with it. So it doesn’t affect all PS3’s then?

Most of the firmware changes haven’t bothered me much and I like having the lil info at the top showing how many people online and if I got a pm since I turned off the notification thing cos it was always annoying me during a game or movie or something.

There is one thing though. The way that all items in the list not the currently ‘chosen’ one disappear after a few seconds. That’s really irritating for me, especially when I was trying to check play length times on videos and music files in the lists and I had to keep flicking up and down to keep the list ‘fresh’ so it wouldn’t fade.

Scooby4ever 8 September, 2009 @ 7:18 pm   52

First of all thanx for sharing som more light. But for some reason i dont think this explained all the stuff that was talked about the store last week? Some ex: Are you going to hurry up process to have avaliable products on each store at the same time or more demos, trial demo before buy etc?

Remember EU have a large community for Sony. So please show us that you support us in the same way you have done with others.

Thank you for interacting and communicating with the user community. That is truly a great way to handle “grass roots” public relations. It is great to see that SCEE does listen and react to user input 😀

What about my UGLY friendlist??? And where is the Scandinavian Dirt 2 demo??? Can we expect a fix soon? You guys only answered the easy question!!!

Bloody_Marcel 8 September, 2009 @ 7:19 pm   55

I’m posting this here because the Contact Us form is buggy (says “Image verification was incorrect. Please try again.” despite it being correct- Tried multiple times reloading the image).

Anyway, this is the message I’m trying to send you:

Hello there,

I just wanted to let you know that since the day the PS3 was released in Europe, the Italian version of the PlayStation Store displays the wrong procedure relative to how you are supposed to install a PS3 Theme.

Here is a picture of it.

It basically states the following:
1) Select Game icon from PS3 Home menu.
2) Highlight this theme and select it by pressing X
3) Push the Triangle button to access the Options menu
4) Select “Set as theme” and follow onscreen instructions to finalize the configuration.

As you can see, this is incorrect and it has been like this since forever!

Can you fix it? Thanks

Desd1nova 8 September, 2009 @ 7:19 pm   56

I’m also another refurb 60gb with an 04 serial number. Point 2 on the BBC iPlayer comment is the clincher.

Looking on the forums it seems that there a few refurbs AND people who’ve been sold a 04 PS3 in the UK.

Great fw.. just give us the choice of choosing the Font/Icon size to smaller..

Thank you for all of that information.

You were direct, open and honest.

Im glad you mentioned some of the hurdles you face compared to the U.S and Japan store in terms of getting things released.

Hopefully this will get a few people of your backs.

Keep up the good work guys.

Desd1nova 8 September, 2009 @ 7:21 pm   59

Just to add to my existing post

The presence of a TV icon isn’t a clincher NOW, but it bodes badly for UK PS3 owners if future UK exclusive features can be held back through no fault of our own…..

perspexorange 8 September, 2009 @ 7:21 pm   60

Thanks for the update. It’s good to have an official response.

As regards the firmware – I generally thought it was pretty good.

I absolutely love the sparkles – they look so nice at the moment, late at night, with the purple and black (currently).

The only things I found a little frustrating was the lack of dynamic themes (which you are fixing this week – so thanks for that) and I think the numerous links to the store (currently two in the EU but 3 soon, presumably) is a little over-the-top.

But generally speaking, a really nice aesthetic update.

So thanks once again, SCEE.

Now all we need is some great new spaces on Home announced for this week (Namco, Siren, Ghostbusters maybe) and I will be very happy.

jellis1992 8 September, 2009 @ 7:22 pm   61

FW3.0 has grown on me over the past week, allthough the option to turn the fonts back would be very welcome :)

The one thing i still want though is the option to hide the PS Store icon under Game, it just doesn’t have to be there because there is another icon 2 clicks away!

I would also like it if when the video store becomes available, it isn’t just a PS Store icon, it is something different and more specific, such as a video store icon.

Thanks for the Q&A!

Skookie30 8 September, 2009 @ 7:22 pm   62

Noooo i want the Ps3 chime back: once great man once said its the SOUL of the ps3 & you Rip it SOUL out.

i cant see any different it still black & pause in the blackness before the title comes on. plz Plz bring it soul back.

1 more thing thank you for the Q&A, you miss a opportunity to say about the grey boxes in friend list are they going to be a mini gamecard with trophy stats on em. 😐

wbrinkman 8 September, 2009 @ 7:22 pm   63

Can’t believe that this took a week to compile.

With regards to the Whats New:
“We’re planning to improve “What’s New” in the future with some exciting content and customisation, so we eagerly await your feedback and ideas.”
Why did SCEE not implement these from the get-go? You knew it was coming. Same with the PSN store bits getting pushed back each and every time. You can’t give out the same excuse time and time again.

I have a feeling that SCEE is trying to keep up with the rest of the SCE divisions but can’t; When is SCEE going to step it’s game up?

I dont like my last couple of posts on the blog here, they’re all very negativly tinted but I’m just getting fed up with the service you give your customers. Thanks.

WhiteWolfDK 8 September, 2009 @ 7:24 pm   64

I’ve noticed small freezes in Ferrari Challenge also, only lasts 1-2 seconds.

The boxes on the friendslist – they’re not that beutifull 😀

The icons and fonts should be made smaller or at least make then customizeable so we can choose our own size.

The popup telling you that a friend has come online ot a message has been recieved – please make it smaller or making it more transparant.

//WhiteWolf wanting a dynamic wolf-theme 😀

Glitch321 8 September, 2009 @ 7:26 pm   65

Alot of unanswered questions. The real question isn’t really about why, it’s what you going to do to fix it?. Are you going to fix it?. I think we all know why you took away the chime but the problem is most never asked you to. I can get into a game two seconds quicker, big deal.

Ziggy-Moff 8 September, 2009 @ 7:27 pm   66

“The BBC iPlayer icon hasn’t appeared on the XMB. How can I get it?”

Right, as explained loads of times, peope who don’t have the icon have EU consoles supplyed by sony via replacement, it’s kinda stupid that your possibly removing options 2 as YOU NEED TO!, you have UK customers without an advertised feature and we don’t have it on our XMB because YOU didn’t send us back UK consoles. Don’t possibly remove the featue just remove it so we can access it via the XMB just like you’ve advertised.

Also as others have said, you’ve once again ignored the most complained about things and just answered with “maybes”, tell us for a fact you are fixing things that have been complained about please.

Also. i find it kind of insulting you say “Thanks to all those of you who have provided positive feedback on 3.0.”, so people who supply negative feedback about 3.0 get no thanks?.

As a wise person once said, “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time” ……Another wise man said “Dont fix what ain’t broke”

Where’s my blog edit button? and why do you call it EU? EU = European Union…. Not Europe(I know it’s a small thing but i do NOT live in EU i live in Europe and i dont wanna be part of EU either..)

Gamester101 8 September, 2009 @ 7:28 pm   69

I’m satisfied with these answers. But I hope that dynamic themes are priced appropriately, anything above £2 and I won’t be buying any.

Thanks for the update I look forward to getting some good themes this week.

One thing about the BBC iplayer is that it should be in Ireland as well. The RTE player would not be as much use for me as I watch less than 5 hours of RTE a week and some of my favourite shows are on BBC.

They broadcast all their shows here as well so I don’t see the point of not letting us use it.

almighty-slayer 8 September, 2009 @ 7:29 pm   71

I must have missed the part where you answered the question of what they hell you did to the friends list.

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 7:29 pm   72

Well it looks like Sony has turned into nintendo, They haven’t listened. I want the spiderman font back as well as the jingle, i dont care if there is a split second loading time faster, at least give us the choice. This is the same with the Playstation Store on the game, and soon to be video, there is NO need, only an idiot would not go on the playstation store regularly.

Next time, dont get the marketing team involved with the update 😀

also why don’t we have any scrolling info in the notification bar like the US and jap?

“As a wise person once said, “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time”

It must be pretty hard to pee off almost everybody the majority of the time then.

Ziggy-Moff 8 September, 2009 @ 7:33 pm   75

@73, be quiet about that, that’s the one bonus we have over the US and jap sections, they are forced to see it all the time and have no option to turn it off, we at least dopn’t have it at all atm.

Plus the only info scrolled is the same exact info that’s in the whats new section.

Hi thank you for this post, it is a start :)

I for one like the update but not the friends list!

But can you explain what the language got to do with the delay of content like themes?

For other content Why not release it in English for people that do not want it in their own language, with an setting in the store or maybe you could do checks like iplayer on language settings of the ps3 and present the US. store updates to everbody with the language set to English..

Glitch321 8 September, 2009 @ 7:33 pm   77

It’s actually a good thing that we don’t have the ticker!, it’s awful.

Blasteroids 8 September, 2009 @ 7:35 pm   78

@73 Looking at the US forums, there is no way to turn off that scrolling bar! So just be pleased we do not have it. It could perhaps be the best thing SCEE never did!

I would just like to say thank you for this post, and also I think the changes in 3.0 was awesome. Even the friendlist is nice where you now don’t need to scroll down to see what people are playing. It would be awesome if you could add trophylevels there in the future.

CircleOfFire 8 September, 2009 @ 7:35 pm   80

My issue with the point about iPlayer is that I do have a UK account and a UK bought PS3, it would appear your man on the forums knows more about this than you do.

I hope that after all the hubbub about EU PSN’s slow approval system. Causing games/themes being released later than US/JP, the approval system will be revised, so people can get their content on time :)

the ugly friends list….the ugly friends list…..the ugly friends list….the ugly friends list….the ugly friends list…the ugly friends list

back old friends list

Well, i certainly enjoyed the amusing comments above.

It is certainly a hard world be live it and only made harder now that it doesnt flash up “playstation 3″ when i start a game….

On a more serious note i do have one small but iritating issue.

– When i go onto the web browser it opens up full pixel, this seems to have been implemented since the iplayer was introduced and is iritating for wesites like wikipedia which display widescreen and are now slow to navigate.

Other than that more options would otherwise be welcome as always, if people dont like bigger icons let them have the small ones, same goes with the screen flash. Im sure the friends list alterations are part of future updates i just hope these come sooner rather than later.

onlineatron 8 September, 2009 @ 7:36 pm   84

Mostly telling us what we already knew.

I’m looking forward to this surprise in the store this week.

Also I’ve had no problem playing music whilst browsing since 3.0.

what crap, these should just be put into the help forums or whatever, this is no real Q&A, you havnt answered the more important questions, like someone above stated, you answered very selective questions.

i bet this thursday will be another poor update, they will just give us a few themes, i gurantee its nothing special.

never going to trust what SCEE say, have to see it to believe it.

onlineatron 8 September, 2009 @ 7:37 pm   86

“You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time” — We love hearing everyone’s opinion so keep the comments coming!”

Problem is you’ve pleased none of the people… none of the time.

uckily I use the ps3iplayer link to see BBCHD streaming in 720p on my ps3, so it’s not the end of the world. Maybe someone in the dev team should add the HD Streaming channel to the interface.

punisher85_pl 8 September, 2009 @ 7:38 pm   88

What about answer on the most important question – What Sony do with the ugly friends list?

btw. when we will obtain a details about new premium avatars?

Killa_Cobra_ST 8 September, 2009 @ 7:38 pm   89

Ooohhh a surprise, should be good hopefully…

balaenidae 8 September, 2009 @ 7:38 pm   90

Thanks for updating us on this. There seem to have been a real shift in the ammount of information given to customers and that can only be a good thing.

Is it reasonable to assume (as you have not commented) that the Playstation Store icons will not recieve a toggle option and that the boxes around the friends list will remain? I think everyone would appreciate an update as to the reason for the grey boxes.

Finally! All Sony ever needed to do was actually sit down and feel like they’re part of the community they so tout themselves and us as.

As of now, i’m just glad users were listened to.

Thanks for the answers to *some* queries.

The Friends List is the easiest thing to fix. 99 percent of people hate it. It simply requires the graphic to be removed – no localisation involved for menu options or functionality. Please, can we just get rid of them or can you perhaps give a hint as to their placeholder nature because that’s what they look like – placeholders.

For shame!

This question is targeted to Sony:

It is true that EA or some business doesn´t want you integrate the cross game voice chat??

If it´s not true, why it hasn´t been integrated yet?

almighty-slayer 8 September, 2009 @ 7:39 pm   94

Surprise for us all?

I bet its that we have to pay £5 for themes 😀

onlineatron 8 September, 2009 @ 7:40 pm   95

I think you completely miss read the comments.

We were not just complaining about poxy themes or bugs in 3.0 that we knew you would fix… we were complaining about the general mistreatment of the SCEE regions.

No GOW collection
No CometCrash
No Bomberman
No Themes
Late Video Store
High Prices for hardware (PS3 and PSP-GO)

onlineatron 8 September, 2009 @ 7:41 pm   96

Also… 95 comments and no response!

Sherif_129 8 September, 2009 @ 7:41 pm   97

Nice Q&A, it answered all my questions, apart from one, the friends list. Will you be reverting back to the old list, with the grey boxes ruining all your dynamic themes? You have receieved a lot of negative feedback about the new friends list.

onlineatron 8 September, 2009 @ 7:42 pm   98

Just change the logo to the PlayStation3 redesign.

i now scroll my friends list down so its off the bottom of the screen, my playstation network coloumn up so its on Home to avoid the Whats New from appearing and scroll my game column up so the 2nd (of soon to be 3) Store logo is above the main XMB icons, Why not remove that 2nd one and have the 6 boxes appear when you hover over the original store icon

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 7:43 pm   100

@ 96, yep this is as far as listening goes with SCEE me thinks

st0rmbr1nger 8 September, 2009 @ 7:44 pm   101

Would like to know if the ugly boxes around the friends list is going to be tweaked. I know it’s a small thing, but right now the PS3 is so god damn perfect, we all find small things to nag about!

Sony have given us the gift of the battery and clock not overwriting each other in one hand, and taken away the looks of the Friends list in the other :-)

Splutterbug 8 September, 2009 @ 7:46 pm   102

Nice to know there is some kind of response but please fix the unreadable friends list and the iplayer icon in the XMB, as an earlier poster stayted “Maybe” just isn’t good enough, there is a problem you’ve acknowledged it please fix it

HEADSTAR 8 September, 2009 @ 7:47 pm   103

i love the sparkling stars go away when a game turns on, dont change that

i dont get it, some of you want lbp dynamic theme for free why??
some people make a living out of this .
sony dont change the size of the icons back, they are nice

DarK_EviL 8 September, 2009 @ 7:47 pm   104

I’m very disapointed about this…
Q&A NEEDED to have all the main questions asked by the gamers (and customers) but again some questions were forgotten…

Sony you answered about the font and you confirmed you’re working on it to make an option to change it but what about :

– The blur in the XMB menu ? It would be nice to have an option to disable it

– The ugly friendlist? Can’t believe you miss this one…

– The several PlayStation Store icons in the XMB Menu (game menu, video menu, useless)

Why did you delete the original pure black theme of the PS3? It was the best one…

Sony you responded about the chime but you have to let your customers the choice to activate it or not

This Q&A needed to be complete with more information and all the missed questions.

G-Force888 8 September, 2009 @ 7:47 pm   105

Thanks for the Q&A, I think one of the main reasons people were getting so annoyed was a feeling that no-one at SCEE was listening. While I’ve had my own issues with some of the updates (font size, PSN store shortcuts and What’s New leading to an increasingly cluttered XMB, when it’s simplicity was one of PS3s big plus points), I’d like to focus on a couple of changes I’m really pleased with. Namely the BBC iplayer. Not so much the icon (though I guess this would be useful for new ps3 users), but the improved video quality, interface and support for bbc news and sport in-page video feeds. Not sure how much was Sony and how much BBC, but it’s a great step towards a future where we can hopefully download BBC HD content to our PS3 HDDs to watch at leisure!
Finally, while “you can’t please ALL the people ALL the time” is a good adage, I’d argue that if you make the compulsory changes into “options”, you could do just that!

englishgolfer 8 September, 2009 @ 7:48 pm   107

sounds good that you’re looking into allowing us to change the xmb fonts. please do something about the friends list. an option to turn off the grey box would be great.

but the real pressing matter, for me, that needs to be dealt with is a weekly store update that is on par with the rest of the world.

My quesitons:

-Would there be an option to make the XMB Color BLACK?

-Can you guys add an option to eliminate the BLUR when you pick something? It mess up with some of the custom themes I’m doing, since I want the background to appear.

-Can you redesign the friends and top bars? I mean, the Friends bars is annoying, I know you guys did it so it could look as the Profile, but it doesn’t fit well. You guys should have gone with the original idea of Friends profiles info appearing in the side bar (when you press Triangle, the bar from the side). Same goes with the info bar, those borders just don’t fit the stylish XMB, remember guys you must keep the XMB Stylish! That is what I love about it, also keep it customizable (for Custom themes) friendly, since we some people like to make their own themes and make it look original.

aaljuma1 8 September, 2009 @ 7:48 pm   109

Good to know you guys always listen…
We need some feedback about whats going on every once and a while…

Quick question… Is there going to be an Arabic XMB & keyboard anytime soon…. or at all ??
I really hope there will be.. my younger brothers aren’t english speaker… and it’s quite difficult for them to get around the PS3… I hope a small effort can be put in this… It would be nice…
It’s kinda strange sony haven’t done this yet.. other products from sony like cameras, TV, etc. supported Arabic before any other company ever did…
I hope they could do something about this..

Cheers Mike..
And wise words in the end…
I repeat that in my head every time I read a comment.. 😛

Blasteroids 8 September, 2009 @ 7:48 pm   110

Please let the surprise be that SCEE have hired someone who can do basic math! It has been lacking for some time now…

Going Country Pack 1 : 5 songs * £0.99 = £4.95 : Pack price £5.25 : £0.30 more expensive!
Roadrunners Records : 5 songs * £0.59 + 1 song * £0.99 = £3.94 : Pack price £4.99 : £1.05 more expensive!
Rock Band Live : 4 songs *£0.59 = £2.36 : Pack price £3.49 : £1.13 more expensive!
Spinal Tap Pack 1 : 4 songs * £0.99 = £3.96 :smileytongue:ack price £4.99 : £1.03 more expensive!
Toby Keith Pack 1 : 6 songs * £0.99 = £5.94 : Pack price £6.29 : £0.35 more expensive!
Warped Tour Pack 1 : 5 songs * £0.99 = £4.95 : Pack price £5.25 : £0.30 more expensive!
Judas Preist Album : 9 songs * £0.99 = £8.91 : Pack price £8.99 : £0.08 more expensive!
Talking Heads : 5 songs * £0.99 = £4.95 : Pack price £5.25 : £0.30 more expensive!

-Also gives us the option to eliminate the Extra PStores, and the NEWS of Whats NEW in the Info bar. We don’t need Whats NEW news in the screen when we can just click in WHATS NEW.

-Can you change the THINK Icon to the water looking one? That one is better and can you add the Battery info INTO the INFO BAR, I think it should be always diplayed in there just as the PSP.

BTW, in SDTVs, when you go to PLAYERS MET, the [OPTIONS (/\)] Bar on the bottom right gets Overlay by the Friends BAR.

Croopnick_PL 8 September, 2009 @ 7:49 pm   112

ok now my questions:
1) what about this ***** useless PSS icon in Games? SONY I KNOW WHERE PSS IS!!!!
2) Why won’t you remove it (I bet Sony won’t do anything with it)
3) Change that ugly friend list…oh..that have to be question…
When you gonna change that ugly friend list?

cornflakes11 8 September, 2009 @ 7:51 pm   113

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 7:51 pm   114

Get rid of the new PS3 logo too! let us choose our own, looks so odd with the actual playstation 3 itself!(60GB, 80GB etc)

Fix the large font size and grey boxes and i’m happy.

Well you are an angry bunch arnt you? I thought only nintendo fans were this rabid!

Thanks for taking users feedback seriously and taking the time to address it (or at least some of it). Hopefully people can put this behind them and move on!

I have to admit after the initial shock of the XMB changes it’s actually growing on me – I would still take the option to reduce the text size if it was offered though. But I think the What’s New section could have useful applications and I can even understand the thinking that the PS3 starts when you turn it on and not when the game starts, hence why the start screen now says PS3 instead of Sony Computer Entertainment, I still think it would be nice to have some kind of brand splash though.

One thing you didn’t address – but really must change – is the PS Store icon in the Games section! Now I know why you did this (though personally I would have used a different icon and called it something like “Recommended PSN Titles”) but the is no excuse for it taking priority over disc-based games – fine when you have no game in let’s see ads for games we could buy – but if I have a disc in that icon should be ABOVE the Store link, and be the first thing the XMB lands on when you select the Game section.

fabiotust 8 September, 2009 @ 7:54 pm   118

Hi thank you for this post!

I would like to see a facility for text messagens in game. It’s much easier with firmware 3.0, but it could be more simple, just press the button PS.

Thanks for the Q&A!

“I don’t like the size of the font and the icons. Why can’t I change it back to its old size?
Based on your feedback, we are looking at the possibility of making the changes optional.”

Goodgood. I’d like to point out, at 720p at least, the graphics for both default themes don’t actually have the resolution/quality to support the increased icon size. Lots of rough jaggy edges except for the PSN icon and other icons designed to expand when you hit TRIANGLE.

I would also like some options or changes for the avatar/friendsonline/newmessages/date/clock/loading/newsticker interface:

– The border is ugly.
– The new clock face loading indicator is clearer but pretty ugly compared to the old design and I don’t want an analog clock face showing constantly when the digital readout is so clear.
– The tiny avatar, friends face, envelope etc. icons look quite messy and unclear at 720p but really I’d rather they only appear when I tap the PS button, like the battery indicator.
– I don’t get the ticker but if it ever appears, it’s pretty useless to me as I’m more up to date with news through my computer’s web browser.

The shiny-grey friends list background ‘bars’ are consistent with the *full screen* player profiles but not the rest of the top-level XMB where they actually reside. A translucent glassy effect or nothing would be preferable. When first opening the Players Met list, for smaller unselected players, the grey bar flashes full size very briefly which looks glitchy.

CapinChronic 8 September, 2009 @ 7:55 pm   121

(1)I want the “PS3 jingle” back I could care less about the extra 2 seconds of loadtime… maybe just update the logo on that “PS3 jingle” section with the new “PS3″ logo.
(2)We should have the option to have the “classic friends list” by pressing triangle on our profile by comment and status section, the new one is way to big and covers up most of my beautiful backgrounds… maybe just make the giant grey boxes transparent??.
(3)We need optional text size for the xmb the new font makes my xmb look cheap/tacky on my HD display.

Change is good but all the people that bought the system day one “11/17/2006″ should be able to leave the system with the same look and feel that we all have known to love.

Croopnick_PL 8 September, 2009 @ 7:57 pm   122

I forgot about one:
4) Why in “what’s new” are show played games? It’s completly useless if you play games only on Blu-ray discs.

Kenshin71 8 September, 2009 @ 7:57 pm   123

If you are having trouble getting out even a dynamic theme then maybe you should reconsider your publishing process. Maybe publish for the major markets first, UK, France, Germany, Spain and then deal with the others later. Seems a bit of a weak excuse.

Also disappointed that 3 years into the PS3’s life it is still not possible to do installs in the background.

englishgolfer 8 September, 2009 @ 7:58 pm   124

on your twitter you have trine coming out this week. is that our little surprise on the store???

Regarding the iPlayer link, you really need to learn the art of self promotion – people complained that the iPlayer functionality was ‘just a link’, and indeed some of the SCEE info about the update said the same. But today the guy in charge of iPlayer at the BBC is singing your praises about the work you did on v3.0 doing things like updating the Flash player, adding codec support, and adding hardware acceleration for full-screen mode etc – features that he says make the PS3 version of iPlayer look close to broadcast quality – why didn’t you say all this yourself when FW3.0 first launched?! He also said the PS3 iPlayer now accounts for 10% of iPlayer users, beating the MAC with 8.5%!

P.S. Which Countries have more than one PSN Store?! – “we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages” – I’m also surprised there are 13 currencies and only 8 languages, I had always assumed there would be more languages than currencies because of the Euro – but regardless it’s about time you streamlined your publication process for everyones sake!

I’d just like the chimes back. They gave the starting up a game a sense of charm. It was nice.
No-one asked for them to be removed.
No-one got grumpy because the chimes took 4 seconds.
No-one’s gaming experience was ruined because of them.
No-one ever had a problem with them.

It was to match the style of the rest of the PS3 interface? Are you sure? Where else in the update did you try and keep the PS3 interface the same style all the way through? Photo Gallery / Vidzone / Life With PlayStation / Folding@Home / Friends Lists / PlayStation Store are all main apps from the XMB, but all look totally different in style.

The chimes were nice.

loonytoon1982 8 September, 2009 @ 7:59 pm   127

The brushing aside of the BBC iPlayer issue doesn’t please me.

I purchased a UK console and paid the nice tidy sum of £425 for it. It proceeded to break and I paid SCEE (UK) £145 PLUS my broken console to have a replacement.

Now I have a console that does not originate from within the UK and therefore have no iPlayer icon. There shouldn’t have to be a workaround as the media promotions are all advertising the service.

I’m also wondering why on earth you have 29 stores in 25 countries.

4 extra stores?

dimososir 8 September, 2009 @ 8:00 pm   128

Whats the point of whats new if it doesn’t update. And there is no ticker for pal. Also if you fix this i expect not to update once in a week but daily as the blog. Please give it a try.I like this feature a lot. With the recently played games batman AA doesn’t work. The big fail for me is the multiple store icons.I am not an idiot i can find my way to the store especially with an easy to use O.S. like the X.M.B..If u are dissatisfied with PSN sales,it’s because the lack of content people ask for not because we can’t find the store.I don’t need an advertise for fat princess all over my X.M.B..Also when u send sony your feedback please mention cross game chat, after all ps3 is all about communication with other gamers.Last make vidzone and video store available for all pal territories,

Glitch321 8 September, 2009 @ 8:02 pm   129

@ 119

Yeah, it looks very unprofessional. I’ve seen user designs that look better. It’s a shame someone got paid to design that. Not many are complaining about it though. I guess we’re stuck with it.

Prem-aka-Prince 8 September, 2009 @ 8:04 pm   130

I’d just like to add my bit. I don’t know what these 04 consoles are, and I’m not angry about it, but it would be nice if they worked too. I can see the problems of opening it up to any UK account though. If 04 is different from any other console, maybe it could just be opened up to 03 and 04. Well, I don’t know what you’ll decide, good luck with that.^^

For those moaning about the cost of items on the store you should note that the UK national minimum wage is $2.21 more an hour than the federal minimum and at worst $1.07 an hour more than the highest US State minimum wage. You should remember than prices are not based on basic conversion and a concious decision by sony to “rip us off”

Darkos87 8 September, 2009 @ 8:05 pm   132

you forgot to mention the amazingly beautiful *nudge nudge wink wink* friends list.

loonytoon1982 8 September, 2009 @ 8:06 pm   133

Block it by IP like the US video store. Problem solved.

Ziggy-Moff 8 September, 2009 @ 8:06 pm   134

If you are going to leave things as they are can you please do the following.

Make the new icons (whats new, game section PSstore icon) match the other icons in terms of there loading times, every other icon on the XMB (games, vidzone, home, normal PSstore) bring up there info around 1 to 2 seconds after you stop on them BUT the new icons do it instantly, this means if simply scrolling along the bar you happen to go past a new icon you get a quick flash of the info, it’s quite annoying and should be fixed.

It’s a minor issue i know BUT all the icons should have the same fade up time for there info.

Also, if you don’t give an option for smaller fonts/icons can you at least give us better resolution ones, on 1080p the new sized icons tend to be a bit jaggy now.

I can’t vouch for others, but coming from lesser populated area (Finland about 5 million speaking the lingo) I’d rather have products offered in English and *In-time* than badly translated and late (if ever).

I know that there are some legal restrictions on selling products in EU without translated manuals, but it’s totally bogus to wait years to some goodies arrive.

Well i dont have the iplayer icon and i purchased a launch console in the UK which died
So sony have sent me a different countrys console back as a refurb. When i was told i would get the exact same model back which i havent

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 8:08 pm   137

I think we should just spam the comment section constantly until we get a reply. We could also just constantly put down what Bioeye wrote
which i totally agree with

did anyone complaining about the new friend list stop to think that when the new, premium avatars come out it might put a theme to the entire grey box….not just a little picture beside your name. just a thought yeno!

No more than one icon for PS Store in Network place, thanks.

racedriving 8 September, 2009 @ 8:11 pm   141

Please allow us to disable the newsticker (not yet launched in EU). The scrolling text is annoying.

Find a way to make the design of the friendslist more appropriate to the XMB.

I guess the main reason for removing the game startup animation is the rebranding of the PS3.
All traces of the Spiderman font are removed.

I appreciate that we got some of our questions addressed but I think you guys should really consider making all the cosmetic changes that were made with 3.0 optional. I think it would go a long way in making long-term PS3 owners happy.

Other than that are you guys at least going to hint on what’s going on with cross-game chat? 😉

wardragon989 8 September, 2009 @ 8:13 pm   143

Half the stuff i read here i already knew but i am a tad bit confused.

“29 stores across 25 countries” Erm where are the extra 4 stores? Is it for certain stubborn conutries with two langauges?

Oh, and i don’t find the benefit of save 1 or 2 seconds without the chime, this means nothing to me.

I don´t know what you what you seriusly think that “whats new” is. But to me it´s pure ads. – If i put the gamedisc in it just starts, BAM! If i played a DLC Title it´s two klicks away, BAM!

The Browser links are just ads (and surfing with the PS3 is not good anyway because it just issent useable) an so are the PSN Store Links.

I don´t need this.

The “Flick” only goes away wen the user logs in. Pls let me get rid of the sparkels on the user selection screen aswell… it makes my TV look like a girl that is using her first make up at age six. It´s just terrible KITSCH.

TheFloyd1978 8 September, 2009 @ 8:14 pm   146

Glad you’re now looking into some of the issues!!!

With regards to the i-player / tv icon feature, you state in criteria two that you must have a PS3 sold in the UK. I do have a PS3 that I bought in the UK except it’s an ’04’. A nuber of people have also unknowingly bought ’04’ models from a number of big name stores recently to find they can’t get this feature. My ’04’ may be the EU model but as all the manuals are in English and only refer to the UK and it clearly states on the back of the box that this console is for use in the UK as well as other European countries it’s fair to say this IS a UK console. Why bother even having ’03’ and ’04’ consoles when Sony are making the ’03’ models available in the UK and then issuing an update that excludes these models?!?

Glad you’re working on it but it shouldn’t be a ‘possibility’ but guaranteed that this will happen.

Anyhow, appreciate you taking the time out to respond to the questions.

Rammstone 8 September, 2009 @ 8:14 pm   147

This wouldn’t even have been necessary if it wasn’t for you blatantly avoiding the issues people are having here. Top issue: Friend’s list.. cubes.. boxes.. dunno whats more fitting, I couldn’t look at them long enough to judge properly. This has been everyones concern and you haven’t even mentioned it. Can you at least tell us what you were thinking? That’s really the most interesting part of it, because even if I intentionally tried to ruin 2.80 I wouldn’t even have thought of putting boxes behind friends list. No matter what.
“Thanks to all those of you who have provided positive feedback on 3.0″
– Who was that, your sales division?
Since you claim to love hearing everyone’s opinion, heres mine. I’ll give you a little insight of the point of a FW update. We’re lucky enough to have evolved such in time that we have the possibility of getting better software some time after the hardware has been released. The reason for this is so that you through feedback can learn what your consumers would want. It’s from about this part of the line you’re doing it wrong. The point of you having the job of updating the FW is to fix the prospective broken stuff, AND giving us new features.

Rammstone 8 September, 2009 @ 8:14 pm   148

Let me show you the definition of “update” in the dictionary.
“# updating – the act of changing something to bring it up to date (usually by adding something)”
See now. That didn’t say “Exchange every working part with visuals similar to a kindergarden’s pillowroom” fw3.0 is a big number. A big step. And what you give us is boxes, intro sound that sounds like a rabbits first gasp, floating tinsel, a dedicated spam tab, and bigger font size that was slightly too big as it was. This barely qualified as fw2.81. You could have at least given us the opportunity to _not_ take part in any of this. Are you seriously proud of it as a firmware? It would be greatly appreciated if you added a “reset all visuals to classic” in a soon to be released fw fix. And remember, a fix doesn’t give you the right to call it fw4.0 Its amusing how you’re so ignorant to all our comments. So now you need a Q&A to the already FW3.0 Q&A to make up for this.

As a wise person once said.. (yeah ok it was me) “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you can also change it and please no one”

hasj1990 8 September, 2009 @ 8:15 pm   149

guys is the big suprise this…

It says that a tweet from playstation says Trine will be releasing this week, but also on the site it says only for US…not sure tho.

I want to remove PS Store icon from Game tab!

EmpireNO 8 September, 2009 @ 8:16 pm   151

Hi Sony! :)

I like FW 3.0 pretty good. What I don’t like is;

– the new friends list
– I don’t like that the menus fade away. When I’m browsing through my music or videos they keep disappearing and I have to keep scrolling to see them. This should also be optional.

Firmware 3.0 is a horrible mistake ….

Please Sony,

Cross Game voice chat, ingame music changing option and PS2 compatibility
and PS3 would be PERFECT :)

Dante_Zero 8 September, 2009 @ 8:19 pm   154

that was absolute tosh. all the stuff i expected from SCEE.

Release the themes to different regions but due to complexities wiht publishing. ???? you are joking right these are dynamic theme not bloody games. localization rules surely dont apply.

i just think typical SCEE respons.e you have final sold me on buying everything being bought from SCEA in future.

And still not answer to LBP:GOTY and God of WAr collection. that Q&A was pathetic.

Worst Q&A ever!!! How about the rest people caomplained about!?

You guys are unbelievable, always throwing dirt to people eyes with “there will be something exclusive for EU bla bla bla”.

We don’t need and we don’t even want… WE DEMAND!!! Yes, we demand, why? Because Fw 2.8 was pretty damn fine and you’ve ruined it with 3.0, put it back online.

– We don’t want this horrible friends list;
– we don’t need 3 shortcuts to store;
– we want the size of the icons to be optional (and text too);
– we want, ate least, one FREE dynamic theme like japan;

Just put it together once and for all sony.

Also not confirmed yet is Trine on the US store this week, are we getting it in the PAL/EU regions too???

VitalogyPJ 8 September, 2009 @ 8:23 pm   159

Aren’t you used too already? This isn’t living, this is sony!!!

It says PAL region for the surprise so it cant be if its US only

an updated browser would be nice

@cc_star-post 74

Wonderful post the best post I have read on the blog and it hits the nail on the head.

I have serious doubts about the brand manager ability at his job with such a condescending quote and wholly misses the level of negative feedback on firmware 3.0.

If anyone at the company I work for (in any position) ever said that to a customer they would be sacked for inappropriate conduct.

hana_fubuki 8 September, 2009 @ 8:25 pm   163

Please give us the chime back! Make it optional so that everybody will be happy (though I refuse to believe people are so ADD-riddled that 2 or 3 seconds would significantly impact their experience).

Those who are used to hearing those three little notes – who have heard them hundreds of times over 2.5 years – now miss them. I know it sounds silly, and it’s really quite insignificant, but it was one of those little things that many people really liked, and that shouldn’t be too difficult to put back (this isn’t in-game XMB or cross-game chat level of programming, is it?).

It’s not just the devil that’s in the details, it’s also the charm.

Liamario 8 September, 2009 @ 8:27 pm   164

Nice Q & A. It’s not something that you had to do, but it is much appreciated by the sane members of the community. Can we get those grey boxes removed from the friends list. If this is not possible, could we have gamercards in place of empty boxes?
When can we expect new avatars?

CMB_DAREDEVIL 8 September, 2009 @ 8:28 pm   165

A good update but somthign i dont understand is :-

Why dont i have the bbc iplayer serveice i am from the U.K using a U.K PSN service and a U.K broadband provider and i purchased my PS3 from game in england. Guys we put up with enough crap where we are mistreated by sony. But if im from the U.K and i am not getting the only U.K exclusive thing i will be upset…

I bought a ps3 in addition to my xbox,and like it,BUT:

Online has to improve with a few things..

– better status of the players (what they doing)
– Cross voice chats
– GAME INVITES (its so much better on the box)
– Speed up the Trophystats (need years to load)
– Music while doing settings or playing games

I think the xbox has the better onlinesystem at the moment, but i hope the ps3 improve more and more – would be fantastic

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 8:29 pm   167

I have a feeling Sony thinks this is going to just blow over, Eventually a there will probably be a petition asking for many features to be brought back/ Taken away.

KingOfNexus 8 September, 2009 @ 8:30 pm   168

I live in the UK, bought my ps3 in the UK at launch, sent it for repair and have got a refurbished one which I assume is from the continent as I don’t have the iPlayer icon. Please remove the second requirement so that I and people like me can have the benifit of a link to the iPlayer on the XMB.

May I suggest that the ‘What’s New?’ section not hijack the ps3 background when hovered/selected on. I.e keep the current selectable icon layout, but keep the ps3 backgorund to whatever is set instead of making it all orange.

DarK_EviL 8 September, 2009 @ 8:31 pm   169

Sony deleted the chime only because they changed the PS3 logo with the Slim PS3 so they don’t want the old spiderman logo anymore for the PS3 it seems…

But what Sony forgot is that they have to LISTEN to their customers first before delete stuff.
I thought an update was made in order to improve something but with Firmware 3.0 they removed good stuff.

Is it too hard to listen to what customers and gamers want?
Is the team who worked on the Firmware 3.0 has console? I really doubt about it when I see the Firmware 3.0 result…

makingdamage 8 September, 2009 @ 8:33 pm   170

It would be interesting to hear why the friends list had to change because it still shows the exact same information!!
If you planning to show more info about one´s friends please do tell us because then we might be able to overlook and even appreciate the awful design of it.

mmmmmhhh no comment on the horrible friendlist and stupid PS Store icon on games menu! raaaaage 1/5

im in desperate need for a function so i can adjust video delay cause my samsung led has 50ms delay and it’s just impossible to play some games, like zen pinball.

GrimNebulinX 8 September, 2009 @ 8:37 pm   173

Since 3.0 I am having hard system crashes playing games such as Uncharted and FarCry2 that have left me unable to turn the PS3 off, that cause the light to flash red.
The font is too large and infantile. Dont pretend that a font isnt important, just look how keen Sony is to distance itself from the “spiderman3″ font by deleting the PS3 game launch chime replacing it with a black screen of nothingness.
You make no mention of the detested friends list boxes, they are exceptionally poorly designed.
The sparkly theme looks ok at night with the dark background an option to have the darker look in the daytime would help.
I want to be able to turn off the horrible “whats new” section, the current option of turning it off does not turn this off.
The award winning, sleek, uncluttered, adult looking XMB that was the envy of your competitors has been degraded by the factors listed in my feedback
I understand SCEE has a complex market, yet the reasons come across as excuses at this stage almost three years into the PS3s life SCEE customers continually suffer. The fact that you couldnt get a theme to our store on Thursday was really quite bad

Generally us europeans find it very hard to agree on anything , look on the bright side here is SCEE bringing us all together as a community, unfortunately for the wrong reason but hey to quote another wise man “You cant win um all”

It would be good to allow gamers to choose on the size of fonts and icons like you said, can’t go wrong with giving us more choice and customisation.

Also making the grey boxes behind the friends list slightly transparent would make them a bit more attractive!

It would be good to see your friends’ latest activities in the “What’s New”, e.g. when a friend has started a new game, come online, sent you a message etc.

Additionally, the Sign in and Out message boxes should have a PSN logo instead of the friends list one. 😉

Another suggestion is to set the XMB to fade after a given time so only the amazing dynamic themes are visible.

hana_fubuki 8 September, 2009 @ 8:40 pm   176

Sorry for the double post, but please make the grey boxes optional, too.

I imagine they’ll be used for something, but I honestly don’t care. Whatever it is you have planned, I don’t want extra information being displayed right there on the XMB – if I really want that info, just give me a menu option. Avatar + name was perfect for me.

I’ve always loved the XMB (ever since I got the PSP at launch) because of how slick, stylish and sparse it was. Please don’t turn it into a billboard, please!

That said, I appreciate this Q&A enormously, because it does answer a lot of questions that have been floating around.

One thing you should maybe have included is the “Display [What’s New]” option in the Settings (it decides whether the PS3 starts up on the “What’s New” panel or, when the option is turned Off, on the Game branch like before).

Amherst_Wind_4 8 September, 2009 @ 8:41 pm   177

I want to believe that the surprise theme will be free, I really do… but I’m going to be realistic, it won’t be.

Matthew_117 8 September, 2009 @ 8:41 pm   178

Any chance of reverting back to the original boot up sequence? ie Sony Computer Entertain instead of PS3 and the original orchestrial score? The new one sounds like a mess compared to the soothing tones of the first 😉 and the new PS3 logo doesn’t match the launch PS3 I have so that’s why I’m wondering about the start up

Dannehkins 8 September, 2009 @ 8:42 pm   179

Thanks for the answers and the time taken to reply some issues that have arisen.

I enjoy the what’s new section. It tell me well basically what is new. It keeps me up to date with some of the things on the store. If you were going to call it advertising, I would probably call it advertising at a bearable and acceptable level.

I think what always gets overlooked is the difficulties in managing so many stores in so many different languages. We have to be realistic I feel and I think there is a lot of pressure on SCEE to generate the quality and quantity of what other regions offer, nevertheless I hope that SCEE are continuing to try and find faster and more efficient ways of dealing with this.

Thanks for the Q and A 😀

Enforcer_X 8 September, 2009 @ 8:42 pm   180

I wish SCEA did a Q&A.
Although you missed one of the biggest questions and that is the Friends list redesign, I enjoyed the Q&A!
Glad to see the options idea is under consideration as I don’t mind any changes if the major ones at least have options to turn back to before the update.

As a wise person once said, “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time” — Actually i believe the original quote the word “please” is replaced with “fool”
Um more fool SCEE

People can also try the different fonts if they don’t like the new larger fonts – it looks much nicer in HD – just my 2 cent.

The most important questions weren’t answered :(

The questions about the friendlist and avatars.

But thanks anyways.

thanks for the Q&A
now are you gona do somthing with the big grey squares around our friends?
like display trophy level?
that would be a cool feature

TKC-Muzzer 8 September, 2009 @ 8:46 pm   185

The BBC i player logo not appearing is not as simple as you make out. A lot of people are reporting that the refurbished consoles Sony send out for faulty ones are in fact the European version and not the UK version meaning things like this don’t show up. surely this would be better going on IP address. Plus how does it effect these UK owners with future content? At the end of the day it is Sony who sent these consoles back so a better solution is required. Personally i like the larger text but you should have known that options make good PR.

MalcolmHB 8 September, 2009 @ 8:46 pm   186

Awesome to hear about the font-size option but please lose the grey boxes as well, they just are not nice. :(

X_Weapon 8 September, 2009 @ 8:47 pm   187

I know that is more difficult release content on the EU Store but it’s not a excuse for not submit game/DLC.
Contact the developers (Konami, Square-Enix, etc…) and talk about it.
And if the personal of SCEE in not enough, assume other people.

Remember SCEE, More content More money. Wake UP.

Spurvugle 8 September, 2009 @ 8:48 pm   188

I hate the 3.00, is it posible to downgrade?

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 8:50 pm   189

I emailed sony about that, they replied that it would void my warranty 😀

parker-94 8 September, 2009 @ 8:50 pm   190

Sony, whatever you changed with that Output Frequency crap, change it back.
Now I’m forced to have it at 48khz if I want to do anything with the PS3. The problem with 48Khz is that its quality is serverely reduced. It sounds a lot less clear, and the quality is a lot less.
To listen to my music in High Quality again, I have to change the settings to the other Output Frequency – but the downside is that I then can’t use the browser or XMB. This is an epic fail.
Fix it.

wallhugger 8 September, 2009 @ 8:51 pm   191

He is probably talking about both belgium and switzerland since both have more than 1 official language .
In belgium they speak according to most spoken dutch french and german and if im not mistaking in switzerland both french and german.

Rude_Sparthan 8 September, 2009 @ 8:51 pm   192

..thanks.. but this is quite UNACCEPTABLE… you know very well that we’re are looking more info about cross game voice chat, and friend list (info and layout) .. well.. this seems a joke.. this must be a joke.. but not funny at all

incredible, and frustrating

CondorMcG 8 September, 2009 @ 8:52 pm   193

First the logo doesn’t rotate on the slim,
Then you make it so my boxes don’t match each other,
And now you remove the little chime at the start of the games?

You’re killing me here Sony.

ShowerMan23 8 September, 2009 @ 8:52 pm   194

Love the update when will we be getting the new avatar.

P.S sparkles are gay

@Mark: Thanks for this Q&A. I havent installed the firmware myself yet, but I’m planning to do so soon. I actually had a question too…

I heard Uncharted is not the only game that freezes during playing the game… Is that true?

1) Please make the grey boxes on the friend list optional. I can see where they might be useful with some backgrounds, but they aren’t necessary for the default background or many others.

2) Please make the additional PSN Store icons optional. These really serve no purpose.

3) Please make the ticker optional. It rarely updates and is just simply annoying.

4) While I want the ticker optional, it would be more useful if you would allow users to add their own RSS feeds.

AzYWaSCrazY 8 September, 2009 @ 8:53 pm   197

One thing I dont get is that US and Japan psn get updated whenever it’s needed with new games, themes and so on.
I noticed that japan gets new games almost every single day so why do we in europe need to wait one week before we get anything which is about 30-50%% less new content than the japanese customers get?
I didn’t even know there was a capcom classic package out before I checked the us psn.

@ Croopnick_PL, Disc based games do appear in the What’s New menu, but I’ve got a feeling (like most new features) it needs a patch to work. Batman Arkham Asylum doesn’t have an icon, but LBP after it’s latest patch does leave an icon behind. Presumably all new games will require this function in future…

@ Those complaining about the What’s New menu, I thought you could turn this feature off? I’m sure there’s an option in the Settings section for it now.

@ SCEE – there is one word you should take away from this storm and that is CHOICE. I’m all for regular firmware updates and additional features etc – but when it comes to substantially altering existing functionality or the XMB it can’t be that hard to had an option in the settings menu – there should be a “User Interface” section in Settings dedicated to the XMB layout…

theHEENAN 8 September, 2009 @ 8:56 pm   199

Well at least we’ve had a response. I guess we are being listened to and that’s encouraging. It seems the new firmware has really divided the community. Personally I don’t like a single one of the changes but I accept some do. So why not give us the option to have the old XMB instead? Suddenly you have pleased all of the people, all of the time.
If not then can Sony provide me with a new slim PS3 to match the new startup?

Also why are people given refurbs? When my xbox died it was repaired and returned to me.

localisation was the reason we didn’t get any themes?
tell me that’s a joke.

Sponge-worthy 8 September, 2009 @ 8:58 pm   201

Abraham Lincoln:

“You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.”

good update cheers.

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 9:01 pm   203

@200 SCEE have cracked many jokes in their time! *sarcasm*

Chance_Splinter 8 September, 2009 @ 9:02 pm   204

A tip for that “What’s New” thing:

Go into the System Settings menu. Scroll down ’till you find “Display [What’s New]” and turn it to “off”.

Now when you start up your PS3, you start at your game – just like you used to.

Dannehkins 8 September, 2009 @ 9:05 pm   205

I presume an answer was not actually given on the backgrounds seen on the friends list because they don’t have anything significant to tell you.

I think that is something to look out for in the future.

Just a quick question, would it not be able for SCEE to provide a small download on the UK store for BBC iPlayer so that people may still gain the link?

AzYWaSCrazY 8 September, 2009 @ 9:06 pm   206

HazelAM it is a joke when he says “they missed our publishing window”. Why can the japanese psn store keep getting updated every single day and the european once a week?
Kind of makes me feel like we haven’t bowed to the mighty sony people enough times even though it’s thanks to us they sold so many ps3’s.

t22design 8 September, 2009 @ 9:06 pm   207

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the FW3.0 update.

The larger font was a big improvement for me, but giving users the option of a few sizes would be seem to please everyone.

The BBC iPlayer shortcut is handy, and the improvement in playback quality makes it a very useful function. (Please fix the problems for people with replacement consoles)

I also like the new start up logo, and I have no objection to the ‘Fizz’ (it’s actually pretty cool). I hadn’t noticed a lack of chimes, so they obviously don’t matter to me.

The store icon spamming is moderately annoying, and I don’t use the ‘What’s New’ thing.

For me, being able to customize what elements of the XMB are visible, would be a brilliant feature.

The “What’s new” feature does not work in several EU countries, can I ask why? Why do I have to be a Western-European resident to be able to see some Playstation-related news? The Information Board worked before, and now it’s replaced by a service I can’t use.
So, my PS3 starts with a blank “What’s new”, it’s taunting me each time I start the console :( .

Croopnick_PL 8 September, 2009 @ 9:07 pm   209

Sony is to busy to watch how PS3Slim sells than read our comments.
I’m tired to be a European gamer, everything delayed or never announced(GoW’s pathetic to not relase it in Europe!)
I’m starting to think that Sony is just a bunch of i**ots…

I got MGS from US Store, I will
get all my future stuff from there (Resident Evil 2 and 3 etc), cheaper and faster.

Croopnick_PL 8 September, 2009 @ 9:09 pm   210

@ Tundra–believe me it’s useless, so you don’t have to regret that you don’t have it.

onlineatron 8 September, 2009 @ 9:10 pm   211

207 posts… no response.

DakiLund 8 September, 2009 @ 9:11 pm   212

You still havent mentioned anything about the number one critique about 3.0, the butt ugly friend list. And for me I cant understand how you can think that the line frame around the “info thing” up in the corner lokks nice, removing the frame would make it fit much better into the style of XMB.

Rude_Sparthan 8 September, 2009 @ 9:11 pm   213

..I’m totally disappointed about those informations.. you know very well wich are our real questions.. (voice chat/friend list) .. but at least SCEE, you’ve tried to do something for us.

So thanks.. …but I think this will be useless.. I think US blog will stay in silence

ShadowPelican 8 September, 2009 @ 9:12 pm   214

You guys missed another HUGE question:

-Why did you add the UGLY bright grey background behind the friends list?!

-And obviously, what’s the status on in-game/cross-game chat?

Dannehkins 8 September, 2009 @ 9:12 pm   215

I agree with t22design, more freedom to customise what someone wants to see on the XMB would probably be a nicer addition. Almost like your own google homepage, you can say what you want on it and what you don’t.

I love the new sparkle effect and the chime.

Dannehkins 8 September, 2009 @ 9:13 pm   216

I don’t understand this cross chat thing. This Q and A was about 3.0, why would they mention anything about cross chat if it wasn’t in the update?

DakiLund 8 September, 2009 @ 9:13 pm   217

And get rid of the fading of text when browsing folders and files, it makes DLNA setups a lot worse. And you are saying that ps3 does everything

WhiteWolfDK 8 September, 2009 @ 9:13 pm   218

@ apnomis – Some countries has more than 1 language as an example Switzerland has 4 if my memory isn’t playing with me, regarding the languages I also thought there would be more I could easily count to 9, with 4 Nordic and German, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Portugese added to that.

west1980 8 September, 2009 @ 9:15 pm   219

localisation is the reason we got no Animated theme last week OMG. thats just so pathetic.I have a cech 04 model and all I want is the icon and make the xmb icons a touch smaller and I am happy!! but a week for this official reply is also pathetic..getting tired now of sony crapping from a great hight on eu gamers now.

Thanks Mark. This is very much appreciated.

Anyway, i would suggest to implement these Q&A sessions every time there is a major update, because now i realize there are a lot of “hidden” features we didn’t know…in this case, i refer at the upsampling thing for netbrowsing/listening music.

Another thing, i would suggest to increase the deals on the store.

They didn’t answer why the PLAYSTATION 3 thing that popped up once you begin a game is gone, but not replaced by one that says PS3… other than that pretty good Q&A

You will be redirected to the PS3 special site of iPlayer, where you can then press “Select” to add to your bookmark.

my god scees admitting they make a mistake… oh wait no, no apology about shipping foreign ps3’s to UK consumers. i mean you could of at least added that in.

VitalogyPJ 8 September, 2009 @ 9:20 pm   223

Oops… they did it again!
A bunch of comments and ZERO replies.

That’s right sony, keep ignoring the people who makes your jobs possible.

AzYWaSCrazY 8 September, 2009 @ 9:20 pm   224

The whole thing about this is that I dont think there is a chance I will buy a ps4 when that comes out if we europeans keep getting the shaft over and over again.
If we can’t get the same treatment as the US and Asians it’s not worth it at all for me.

Chubster2010 8 September, 2009 @ 9:22 pm   225

Thanks for the update.

I sincerely hope that you will alter point ‘(2) A PS3 console sold in the UK’ in regards to BBC iPlayer.

I bought my PS3 console in the UK…but Sony replaced it with a European one when it broke…. I know I’m not alone in this.

It seems a little harsh that us poor Yellow Light of Death victims have to suffer further indignities…. 😉

Croopnick_PL 8 September, 2009 @ 9:24 pm   226

@White Wolf–yeah! some countries have 4
language in Store, some countries have english (like Poland), and some don’t have PSS at all!

StevenHibs 8 September, 2009 @ 9:25 pm   227

Firmware 3.0 has been a complete farce, why cant we just get what we had before, I mean who gave feedback to the firmware team to change the friends list, most likely no one, and yet the go and change it, and make it look disgusting, yes I believe that Sony is working on some sort of dynamic avatar or something, but seriously, I thought Sony’s goal was to give the consumer the best possible experience, well if that’s true, then surely we can have the option to customize our XMB! Get rid of the PS Store icons, so we just have one! Smaller icons and font thanks! Just give us the option to do what we want, And the fact that us Europeans get the worst possible store, just goes to show Sony aint going to change, and yet it’s us that are leading in the console sales. It’s shocking! What about the chance of a UK localised store, probably not possible, but we would get content alot quicker than the rest of Europe. So please fix this disaster, and give us (the consumers) what we want, which is our own unique experience.

Dannehkins 8 September, 2009 @ 9:25 pm   228

As I said earlier, would it be possible for SCEE to be able to update the store and place a BBC iPlayer download so that those with refurbished consoles would be able to actually have the icon?

azy, sorry, not typing all that in, not with that capitalisation anyway :) i asked about why they persist in this only update on thursdays thing when we had to wait weeks for the conference videos.
but no answer was given then, of course the problem was made worse with that because it seems like scee do nothing all week and then it’s a mad scramble on thursday to get everything done, which is why scee always mess up every week.

and with regards to the firmware update.
how about for once sony listen to it’s customers and do what they want instead of what it thinks they want and let us change the colour of the fonts, like we’ve been asking for for nearly three years.
seriously, only nintendo ignore their customers more than sony do.

That was helpfull. Thanks a lot. Hope we can see some dynamic themes soon on our store and hopefully the uncharted problem will be solved soon aswell :)

Croopnick_PL 8 September, 2009 @ 9:28 pm   231

Maybe we get “Q&A why Sony doesn’t replay in comments” LOL

somethingatt 8 September, 2009 @ 9:28 pm   232

Game opening chime not coming back??
There were rumours a new opening will début with Uncharted 2, please make it so!

10+ years of PlayStation gaming, and all the consoles had a game opening chime! You can’t change that now!
0.3 seconds faster loading without it isn’t a good enough reason.

Dannehkins 8 September, 2009 @ 9:32 pm   233

If you’ll point your attention towards the first page, Jem has already stated that Mark will be making some replies to our comments tomorrow morning. Just a bit patience.

DarK_EviL 8 September, 2009 @ 9:35 pm   234

I agree with somethingatt, we want the Chime to get back when we start a game…
I understand Sony want to forget about the old spiderman PS3 logo since the new Slim PS3 arrived but it’s not a reason. At least make a new chime with the new PS3 logo or better give us the choice to activate it or not!

And why did you delete the original pure black XMB theme? Bring it back too!

The grey boxes around the friends was also a major complaint I think you should have commented on. (Apparently many users, myself included, appreciated the previous clean, stilistic and uncluttered look of the XMB.)

st0rmbr1nger 8 September, 2009 @ 9:37 pm   236

How can I report a annoying firmware bug thats crept in somwhere (it was in 2.80 and it’s also in 3.0)

if you have a new PS3 and want to sign into an EXISTING PSN account, in the Account Management page, where you enter your existing email details, the entry form initially has a character limit. My email address is too long, and you can’t complete sign up. However if you close the onscreen keyboard and open it again, you CAN sign in with long email addresses.

If Sony care about the number of PSN signups, they really need to fix this glitch.

Pentavus 8 September, 2009 @ 9:38 pm   237

I don’t like the new firmware. I want to have the old options and stuff back. :(

AzYWaSCrazY 8 September, 2009 @ 9:39 pm   238

Hazel that nintendo comment was gold hahaha 😀
Zaphloo the question we should get an answer to with this firmware update is who the hell came up with it and who tested it and said people will love it ? 😛

PanixATK 8 September, 2009 @ 9:39 pm   239

im happy with the update. i have no problem whats so ever. i got iplayer on xmb alright. i can play music in the background while browsing the net.

What’s im very happy with is “multi-audio output”. i can turn on my optical 5.1 surround on without having to go to audio setting on xmb. Excellent work! (that wipeout fury soundtrack was awesome)

the only thing im not so happy with is, friend list with grey boxes. I think sony should remove those grey boxes.

the surprise will be that you guys will have to pay more for the dynamic themes because apparently at 2.99 U.S, it’s just not enough to cover the development cost lol, as if!!!

west1980 8 September, 2009 @ 9:42 pm   241

@ S-E-G lmao…your probs right

FacanferPSN2 8 September, 2009 @ 9:49 pm   242

That dynamic theme to be available in ps store will be free or will be about 2,99€?
When we have a new update?
Sony has forgotten that PS3 have a browser? I use it but dont have the latest flash version, no java and no pdf reader!

st0rmbr1nger 8 September, 2009 @ 9:50 pm   243

I suppose the more time they waste tweaking little niggles, the less time they have to implement bigger things like XGame voice chat, and Skype integration etc.

You might want to bear than in mind before crying about small things you don’t like..

You didn’t answer the most important thing: The friends list!

a pdf reader would be very cool actually, could read the heroes comics on my big tv and not on some little pc monitor.
but then with the comic book thing coming this year, until they delay it at least, they might not add a pdf reader.

Grind_Axis 8 September, 2009 @ 9:52 pm   246

Thanks for the swift response SCEE, and it’s nice to see you’re taking the community’s complaints seriously. (even though some are pretty darned insane)

AzYWaSCrazY 8 September, 2009 @ 9:53 pm   247

Here’s a spoiler for you guys.
The dynamic theme will be a US sackboy and a Asian sackboy pointing and laughing at European sackboy for paying more and getting less 😛
*note* for the simpletons that this was meant as a joke!

DeadSancus 8 September, 2009 @ 9:53 pm   248

but that game start chime was awesome, I miss it. :(

FacanferPSN2 8 September, 2009 @ 9:54 pm   249

If there are many people asking for these features maybe they go to the track! How we get the flash 9? Asking!

Please give us options to change color and opacity of the gray boxes in friendlist.
Please don’t put any ticker in the clockbar for EU region with the next update, ’cause i’m glad not to have it yet.
If you do so, i have to disable the autologin into PSN function.
I dont like your advertisment in MY XMB, yes it is my XMB not yours, because i have to look at it and not you.
Usually i skip away every type of advertisment in any type of media (TV,Newspaper, Magazines, Internet), and so i’ll do with the Playstation 3.
You should recognize that it’s not your Playstation 3, it’ mine because i spend money for that.
Imagine you will buy some green T-shirt, i came up next day and color them grey while telling you that grey is the better color, how would you feel?

but stormbringer, part of the problem was them messing about with the little things that didn’t need changing instead of the big important stuff that is still missing.

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 9:59 pm   252

“You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time”

Problem is, its not just some its about 1% of the userbase who are pleased with the update.

you said:
“The first thing I see when I turn my PS3 on is adverts. What does this offer me?

It’s not just about adverts — the primary role of the “What’s New” screen is to get you into the game more quickly. You’ll be able to jump straight into the last three games or applications that you’ve been using. It’s basically acts as a short-cut to the games that are resident on the HDD, so that they can be automatically booted up rather than having to go via the game selection icons on the XMB.”

thanks SCEE for the update and i look forward to being able to play uncharted again, and to change the XMB text size. however, i think your excuse about not publishing the dynamic themes (and other content we always seem to miss out on i assume) is due to the number of stores that you have to publish to is pathetic, slack and shameful that you would use such an excuse. Seperate the Store territories into language territories and release the content for languages that you look after when they are available. Australia should be taken from your umbrella and put under the American store if this is too hard, as it is frustrating to have to wait for content whilst you translate text and currencies.

Dannehkins 8 September, 2009 @ 10:03 pm   255

Another quick question on behalf of those who have not took a likening to the new friend boxes – I actually quite like them.

Will Sony be addressing this issue and is there any word on how they will address it to suit people’s wants and needs?

I’m surprised SCEE released a Q&A at all.

Not because they’re bad at their jobs, but because no matter what they try, what they say, or what they do, people just comeonto the blog and whine the house down.

After this long, if there’s no cross-game chat, no PS2 emulation on the PS3 and none of the other garbage people keep crying for, it’s just not comeing.

If I worked on the Sony blog staff now, my main gole would be to shut it down. Recently, the activities of the PS3 fanbase have shown that there’s just too many bad apples screwing it up for the rest of us.

AzYWaSCrazY 8 September, 2009 @ 10:14 pm   257

It’s not so much about dislikes Dannehkins.
It’s about Sony making promises that they cant keep.
It’s pretty basic knowledge not to promise anything you cant or wont be able to do.
It’s about Sony not testing their updates enough or give more options in with their changes so people who dont like a certain thing can change it out.
Sony said after killzone 2 that they wont delay anymore games and blablabla.
They keep doing it over and over.
That’s why people including me get frustrated.
They make a huge mistake and they wont fix it until the next week or they cant put in a simple dynamic theme because they missed a “publishing window”? It’s their own freaking store they should be able to decide when something goes up. It’s not a retail store out in the city with diffrent shipping dates it’s all digital so I dont buy their excuses since this problem doesn’t affect us or japanese psn stores.
I downloaded the africa theme from the japanese psn store and it doesn’t need to be remade for diffrent languages it’s a picture with grass, cloudes and zebras walking 😛

Have to say that the Q&A is a bit weedy to be honest!

And the dynamic themes wern’t released because of the complexity of the store? There’s an answer to that and it’s split the stores up if it’s going to improve the delivery!

Any chance you could make the grey box on the friends list optional? That thing really is hideous…

swcoruscant 8 September, 2009 @ 10:17 pm   260

It’s funny they didn’t mention the friendslist, which for me is one of the most important problems.

can you get rid of the stupid advert rubbish at start up and put it back to how it was (starts up and shows what game is in the ps3) and can you get rid of the link to the ps store from the GAME heading because it is in the way when you want to check trophies ingame.

tomoe-chuu 8 September, 2009 @ 10:22 pm   262

I’d like to be able to remove the grey borders and new PlayStation Store links.

MrHabushi 8 September, 2009 @ 10:24 pm   263

I also wish the game start chime was at least brought back as an option, I’ve always liked the two-stage design of the PlayStation start-up branding. I can understand why it’s gone – it doesn’t fit with the PS3’s new branding of having the logo displayed on console start-up – but the old start-up sound and chime fitted-in really well with the whole experience. Now all we get is the slightly weird new sound, and then…silence.

It’s not a feature that most users or developers will care about so it’s safe to say the chime is gone for good, but it’d still be nice to have it back somehow. It’s the subtle things that can make all the difference.

I have a UK PS3 and a uk ps3 account, obviously. Yet no iplayer xmb icon.

Also, ‘whats new’ is garbage, i want to control what i see on my xmb, why am i getting forced into seeing glorified adverts and junk. This is what happened to another well known console, ‘spotlight’ and all this rubbish where 50% of the xmb is dedicated to adverts.
It isnt clever or in anyway helpful, it just clogs up an otherwise streamlined interface.

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 10:29 pm   265

@263 I think you’ll be suprised at the amount of people who actually want the chime back. Its annoyed me how sony have introduced the new logo etc to the old PS3’s as its just is so odd, as if they are just forgetting about the fact the old ps3’s do have a different text!

The chime needs to come back- PLAYSTATION 3 (spider man Font) for Big Ps3’s)
PS3 (new logo) for the slim Ps3
as default, but then users can change if it wanted.

sully1311 8 September, 2009 @ 10:29 pm   266

can you bring back the original start up screen and music plz?
also we need itv player, 4oD and five on demand!!!

Takehaniyasubiko 8 September, 2009 @ 10:31 pm   267

This Q&A is a lie. It’s not funny anymore. We’ve been told we’ll get straight answers to the burning questions and all we have is PR nonsense.

It’s crazy how this Brand Manager guy babbles. Just look at that 48 kHz crap – we are forced to use that option and all he says is that we are forced to use that option!?

PS3 can’t handle music output of better quality!? What is this? A 486 CPU PC?

The truth is that the firmware team FAILS. They just can’t code well. Their software reeks of cheap and 3.0 is a perfect example of how bad their skills are. Life with Playstation is a far better app than the whole XMB… It’s pathetic…

sully1311 8 September, 2009 @ 10:31 pm   268

it’s pretty much pointless to comment or even make requests for future firmware upgrades people, it’s been 3 years that we have been making request and it seems like they are not listening to us and so far all updates have been about what Sony want’s, and that’s our money, when they get there milking process well setup then maybe we will finally get what we’ve been asking for. and that’s a big fat MAYBE!! we now have multiple shortcuts to the Store, soon to be able to access the store from home, once that’s done, we should get what we’ve been asking for, unless they figure out other ways to milk us then that could probably delay what we’ve been asking for again.

twistedintoform 8 September, 2009 @ 10:32 pm   270

covers several things, but:

1) the friends/players met list – it’s an eyesore, and scrolling through the players met section causes some weird ghosting of the images. this was probably one of the most common complaints, and hasn’t been addressed.

2) what’s new? i have no problem with it per se, except that it should display your theme background, but the short cuts to the last three games is pointless if they’re all based on disc sitting on a shelf.

3) the PS store doesn’t need to be in the games section.

4) i don’t want the text of other xmb options to disappear when i’ve paused on one.

if anything, this should have indicated that no future changes to the xmb should be made wholesale, and customisation is the way to allow people to make the xmb how they like it. we have to look at it, and everyone has their own tastes. i think apnomis nailed it in his comment when he suggested a user interface settings option, and future changes have an on/off toggle etc.

twistedintoform 8 September, 2009 @ 10:34 pm   271

other stuff:
some countries have more than one official language (eg: flemish and french in belgium) so have more than one store.

the iplayer is not an app, so you couldn’t really download it from the store. you would have to make a FW update probably to fix it. the BBC has ip blocking anyway, so even if the link was available to you, and you had a UK account, it still wouldn’t work if your ps3 is not actually in the UK.

i’m quite surprised sony hasn’t implemented ip-blocking for all its stores, as they have done for the US videostore.

what’s the point in asking stuff totally unrelated to FW3.0? and as for cross-game chat.. they’re hardly going to say “we’re working in it”, because then there’ll be a 1000 questions every week “when’s it coming?”, or “you said it was coming 6 months ago”, and if they say “it’s not a feature currently under development”, they’ll get bombarded with abuse.

geezadr8n 8 September, 2009 @ 10:35 pm   272

I can no longer use remote play since I updated. What’s that about?

I can connect ok at first but after about thirty seconds the screen starts to break up and turns green.

I’ve tried several fixes but nothing works.

Any chance we could get the pre-game chime back

“You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.” P. T. Barnum.

Just saying.

For the dynamic themes, if you could make one that is the style of the playstation 2 system menu, the swishing circles, that would be fantastic. The iPlayer intergration is so half-arsed that you really shouldn’t have bothered! It should have been fully intergrated into the console and not a rubbish web link. Also, the XMB background when you select the iplayer is a horrible grey. If there could be a scrolling list of what has recently been added and most watched, that would be great. Adding the option to change the xmb icons back down to their small size is wanted, as I really don’t like the bigger icons. Seperation of gained and ungained trophies would be nice, as well as listing all trophy games in alphabetical order. Cheers!

Sorry I wrote so much, I purchased a new Vaio the other day and typing is lovely!

casper1967 8 September, 2009 @ 10:47 pm   277

please reply to this,

could you tell us if theres anymore information on cross game voice chat?
can you tell us if its at least being worked on as its the most wanted feature on the ps3

but back to the topic, i love the new update, i just wish people would stop complaining

RBMaurice 8 September, 2009 @ 10:50 pm   278

For me it’s still of a personal dislike of putting the new PS3 logo on our “old” PlaySation 3’s, I liked the “Sony Computer Entertainment” boot-up and the game start-up chime. For me that was the “face” of the fat PS3 and it should always have stayed that way for the ‘early-adaptors’ who liked it as an option!

Personally I think the non-gaming applications and the game start time is not really that much of an issue, as in my knowledge the logo wasn’t shown in the case of VidZone anyway. And otherwise it shouldn’t be to hard to program it in such a way that non-gaming applications boot without the chime…

RBMaurice 8 September, 2009 @ 10:51 pm   279

Other than that, thanks for clearing up some things Sony! :)

damienmcnugget 8 September, 2009 @ 10:51 pm   280

I like the update at large, especially that the network suddenly is stable and stays connected for hours and hours, as opposed to the previous 10-20 minutes! Kudos.
I enjoy being able to tell in the What’s New XMB if new arrivals are in, rather than logging on to PSN every 10 minutes on a thursday night.

My main dispute with 3.00 is that while the “Display all” function for music, picture and video folders displays immediately and with a tenfold of subfolders as always, the direct link for the respective categories now takes 3-4 minutes to index before any files are shown on my external USB drive, one subfolder level down.
Why not just implement the Display all functionality directly to the category top level in the XMB?

Oh, and MKV/x.264 compability would be nice, and the possibility to turn off/soften the startup BEEP when powering on, it wakes up my girlfriend (I’m an insomniac), and I have to cover the PS3 up in blankets before turning it on at night.

The new slim is great by the way, I traded my 80 GB in at Gamestop here in Norway. A bit louder/whinier than expected though.

Kitty-Wali- 8 September, 2009 @ 10:52 pm   281

I would thank you for good thread , but will we get mkv player application in next firmware?

better folder options would be really good and region unlock DVD playback. As it stands the PS3 cannot really claim to be a one box in the living room solution if you have to have a region free dvd player and cannot plug in an Ipod etc.

kenziedaddy 8 September, 2009 @ 10:56 pm   283

i was annoyed about the themes but now i know ur sorting it im glad i want to know wen we can start listening to our own music on games i love the work ur doin keep it up and can ppl stop moaning its sony they done a great job so far u all know its better than xbox so let them get on with it thank u

Firmware 3.0 is great for me!

Only thing is you should be able to change the friends list to a different color or something, Teh grey is ugly.

kenziedaddy 8 September, 2009 @ 10:59 pm   285

yep i agree

kenziedaddy 8 September, 2009 @ 11:02 pm   286

does psn update every thursday does any1 know

compatibilidad con mkv para la proxima actualisacion, y poder tener el sonido tanto por HDMI como por salida digital(optica) sin tener que entrar a cambiarlo, gracias.

i updated the other day watched a bluray last night worked fine and now none of my bluray disks will load at all or any of my ps3 games either this update is a curse!!!

This Q&A told us nothing new that users from all over the PS community have already found out.

This Q&A is no less equal to a bloody politicians answers. Wheres the stuff that the community actually wants?

You know like

In game music for ALL games
Cross game chat for all games.

This is what the majority wants not some bloody links to stores and short cuts that might save all but a few micro-seconds on navigation and stupid fluff like sparkles.

Is this really what the software engineers is being paid for?

Theres a reason why Microsoft is beating you, take bloody note and give the majority what they want or at least stop the procrastination and offer an excuse why you cant give the community the features they soo desperately yearn for.

waypoetic 8 September, 2009 @ 11:11 pm   290

The grey boxes in the friendslist Sony, the grey boxes… It’s ridiculous that wasnt mentioned in your Q&A, ‘cus you know that the majority of us users hate them. It’s great that you’re going to give us the option to change the font size on the XMB, but that’s only one out of three issues that has been mentioned : too large fonts in the xmb, the PSS icon in the games section and first and foremost : the grey boxes in the friends section. I’ve sat and looked at those awful things and tried to figure out Why they are even there and what sort of purpose they could possibly serve, and yet nothing. I liked how it was before, it was clean and neat. The friendslist is fine they it WAS, but not now. Now it’s hideous with those grey boxes.

I hope SCEA makes a thread about this too, so i can post this at that thread too.

MJHAYLETT 8 September, 2009 @ 11:13 pm   291

I do have a UK PSN Account and I bought a UK PS3. Sony replaced it when it died with a CECHC04 console, so I don’t get the BBC iPlayer Icon. What is Sony doing about that? It is no fault of mine that you gave me a refurb Euro console and not a UK one.

PLEASE please please let the Dynamic theme be the Afrika one, that would deffo make up for the delay :)

Keep up the good work on the firmware and i am looking forward to many more years with SCEE.

LukasDave 8 September, 2009 @ 11:21 pm   293

Please! for the love of god, all i want to know is that you please ignore the people who are moaning for the reappearence of the spiderman font and loading game chime!!

I understand that people are entitled to there own opinion and i respect that to a certain extent but when there just being pathetic i have no sympathy. Adding these back would not be of any benefit what-so-ever to anybody and would infact slow it down again but going from past experience it always seems to be these silly little pointless things that Sony concentrate on and they avoid the big problems which is where all the flak that they receive comes from.

The fact that it seems you are starting to actually listen to your customers is a good start and were all really hopeing that it continues to stay that way and further improve to a level it should be at, especially in the EU.

While I am happy we have this Q&A now, I still miss some answers and hope you maybe have the answers for us..

– The pore situation the playstation store is in compared to SCEA/SCEJ
– No LBP GOTY why????
– No God of War 1 & 2 for europe why???
– What’s new is not being updated regularly why is that????
– Pricing is just crazy it should be the same for everyone I don’t expect to pay € 8 more for a platinum re-release of a game!!!
– Videostore release date when?????
– Why do certain Special editions never reach our shores…????
– Demo section in the playstation store why don’t we have one???
– Why does it take forever to get certain trophy patches here?? personally waiting on 50 cent: Blood on the sand.

LukasDave 8 September, 2009 @ 11:22 pm   295

^^ To add to the above – personally i thought the 3.0 FW update was great – little unsure about the friends and extra store tabs?? Concerned that its taken 3+ years to get it to this state. Thats a seriously long time for what it is. Peoples brand loyalty is starting to run very thin with playstation these days.

The whole dynamic themes issue im not really fussed about. themes have been round for many years and we have never been charged but the excuss that they didnt reach the EU store due to localization is just rediculous. What part of a theme needs to be localized – absolutly nothing!!

Those kind of answers are what angers your customers the most!

Munkeh111 8 September, 2009 @ 11:30 pm   296

Thank you for this, great to see that you are taking our feedback into a consideration, now as a thank you, can we have some release dates confirmed?

hindahouse 8 September, 2009 @ 11:30 pm   297

@ 294 Its not pathetic, no opinion is pathetic. Many people want this feature back, it was just much more professional. And I agree with you on the fact sony concentrate on the little things etc, but you relise that this was something little in the first place, what was the needed to take it away, which shows sony aren’t concentrating efforts on the real features wanted. Either way i still want the start up back

I have a fix for the Grey Userlist Boxes.

I have deleted all my friends and no longer suffer from this problem.

Scooby4ever 8 September, 2009 @ 11:31 pm   299

some ideas how you could do In future system updates:
Why not just add a customize option to those things you changed so people can add back orginal boot logo, orginal start logo before game start, bigger or smaller font or icons, old or new friendlist look?

Future wishes?
– Please add option to play your own music in games pleaseeee…
– Join a friends online game by just clicking on him and choosing JOIN GAME?
– PSN STORE UPDATE. Add so we get same games as US and JAP stores?
– Improve your EU store so we get same stuff as the US and JAP at same time. Get more people on it or re-organice your rutines, please just do it!!!

Sweden dont even have DIRT2 demo to download? Many people dont buy anything they havent tested. Iam one of them.

bluem00se 8 September, 2009 @ 11:32 pm   300

In addition to making the font size optional, PLEASE make the wallpaper blur effect optional as well. It’s nauseating and I don’t like not being able to see my wallpaper very well whenever I click on something.

endurodog300 8 September, 2009 @ 11:32 pm   301

i really like the 3.00 update and thankfully not had any problems. but please sony, bring back the game start up jingle and platstation3 logo when starting up a game, as an option would be fine… just not playstation without it. everything else though is great. thanks……

if your going to keep the extra store icons could we please be able to edit them in theme maker

Takehaniyasubiko 8 September, 2009 @ 11:33 pm   303

We’ve just been told what we already knew. Sad to see this company being in such a big denial. Instead of admitting their mistakes, they prefer to act as if nothing happened.

You won’t please everyone but this update is the biggest flop ever! Roll it back or fix it ASAP. Those empty words won’t change anything. PS3 Brand Manager is killing the PS3 brand with such stupid entries.

AzYWaSCrazY 8 September, 2009 @ 11:36 pm   304

kenziedaddy the european psn always updates on thursdays between 17.00 uk time. But ever since firmware 3.00 came out it’s been after 20.00-22.00 for some weird reason.

Fr34kyUK just get a japanese psn account and get that theme for free without having to wait for god knows how long.

HeartBreaker2k 8 September, 2009 @ 11:38 pm   305

Please give us the old friends list – the grey boxes are really ugly and spoil the lovely XMB!

AzYWaSCrazY 8 September, 2009 @ 11:38 pm   306

Fr34kyUK on a sidenote don’t get the africa theme btw.
The dynamic theme is so bright that you cant even see the icons you are going to everything goes really bright light and you pretty much get blinded by it 😛

Excellent, thanks for the update. Overall I’m happy with FW3 but share those same core complaints which tends to ruin it. So will be much happier when the fonts/icons sizing option is applied
I hope your looking at the other main issue to – the friendlists, surely it’s not going to be left as is??? It seriously ruins the appearance of the whole XMB – tone those bars down at least with more transparency

Speaking firmware and obviously they won’t be concentrating on it now with the bugfixes but I would luv to know if and when we’re getting Bluetooth A2DP. The code must be similar to the PSPgo so I’m hoping sooner rather than later?

guyvernoid22 8 September, 2009 @ 11:40 pm   308

Much appreciated.

But why do i get the feeling this supprise is not going to be as good as we all think.

ive lost alot of trust with SCEE, sorry to sound harsh but its true maybe SCEE needs more man power i dont know, its not just the Store but HOME aswell is a shamble and even though no employee at SCEE would openly admit on here!

im sure many will agree with me that we need more help to try and make our service just as great as Japan and the US.

ill eat my hat if you can prove me wrong SCEE. 😀

TheNarrator 8 September, 2009 @ 11:41 pm   309

cool, mixed bag of nice interesting answers in there, greatful for them for sure :). awesome work!

although saying “we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages” is less of a reason and more an excuse.

why cant you, like, improve your system? we dont really care about the workload, or legal stuff. we care it still takes forever to get to us. you should be working on making it as streamlined as possible, not just throwing us that quote as an excuse everytime.

that sounded so harsh, sorry. meant to sound playful, yet with a point, hehe 😀

BuboBriff 8 September, 2009 @ 11:44 pm   310

PLEASE add MKV support. I’m sure you’re aware Samsung have added it to their players and future TVs will support it. You will sell many thousands of units just by adding this alone. HTH.

I am a UK resident and as such have a UK PSN account and my console is a referb unit that Sony sent me to replace my launch model that developed a fault with the Blu-ray lasers. Yet I don’t have the BBC iPlayer icon on my XMB. Whilst I really don’t mind as I don’t use the service it does make me wonder where my console came from??? Surely it would have to be a European model for the icon not to appear?

On a seperate note I think the grey boxes round peoples names on the friends list should remain…just to pee everyone else off.
Why it’s such a big deal to people is completely beyond me! I spend my time on the PS3 either gaming or watching films or listening to music and not studying my friends list. I’d much rather Sony spend their time on important issues and not pandering to peoples petty gripes about cosmetics.

GrimNebulinX 8 September, 2009 @ 11:47 pm   312

I just wanted to add to my earlier long list of things i hate about this firmware
I also hate the blurring effect that has been added whenever you click on something. It makes me get a headache.
Who made this horrible firmware 3.0 ?
Please give us the option to upgrade back to 2.8
I am not a moaner, This is the first time I have ever been unhappy about a PS3 firmware update

waypoetic 8 September, 2009 @ 11:47 pm   313

@ 299

“- PSN STORE UPDATE. Add so we get same games as US and JAP stores?”

Det beror inte på Sony, det beror på utvecklarna. Det är inte Sony’s fel att Metal Gear Solid ännu inte har släppts på den europeiska shoppen, däremot är det Konami/Kojima Productions “fel”.

PYTHON101 8 September, 2009 @ 11:48 pm   314

Will we ever see adhoc on the PS3?

PYTHON101 8 September, 2009 @ 11:50 pm   315

More video codec would be great since I watch a lot of media on my system.

AzYWaSCrazY 8 September, 2009 @ 11:51 pm   316

Bluepip big changes for sony take a couple of years as you noticed and people dont want to waste their time complaining about stuff sony wont do anything about.
Instead they complain about the small things that maybe, just maybe sony might make changes to :)

REZBERLIN 8 September, 2009 @ 11:53 pm   317

thank you for the much needed update!

While I understand most of your responses, I cannot believe, that you would castrate the PS3 Game Start Chime for something Non-Game-y (and ADVERTISING-OOZING) like that stupid piece of software (with the most uncomfortable UI ever) VidZone!

If I wanted to buy a Mediaplayer of some sort, I would have gone somewhere else. I bought the PS3, because I wanted to PLAY GAMES.

I think that leaving the Game Start Chime out is a big mistake, which makes the PS3 less “individual”, less special. No matter what price, no matter what game.

Also, I agree with others here, that your OVER-USE of marketing messages in the new UI (e.g. “What’s New”) may backfire and leave you with gamers ignoring them altogether.

Please, the PS3 is not aimed at kids. We are not kids. I’m 33. I have a degree in Marketing. I know, when I’m being fed marketing messages…

LAClennell 8 September, 2009 @ 11:53 pm   318

Hang on 1 minute, You still haven’t told us if and when we are getting a party system (or cross game chat). That is why people are leaving the PS3 for the FAILBOX 360. SORT IT SONY. And please don’t give me that ‘Localisation’ Crap, I want a decent answer

guyvernoid22 8 September, 2009 @ 11:53 pm   319

just thought I would post a link in here! I found a post over the eu forums.

I suggest takin a look at it the OP has hit the nail on the head with the design of what 3.00 XMB should look like.

A friend has been complaining that his usb ports aren’t working after the 3.0 update. Is anyone else having this problem?

waypoetic 9 September, 2009 @ 12:01 am   321

“You still haven’t told us if and when we are getting a party system (or cross game chat).”

That doesn’t belong in this discussion, read the topic next time – “Firmware 3.00 Q&A”

I’m tired of seeing people spamming every news thread about that cross game stuff.

The things I like about FW 3.0

Whats new. Even if it is just a glorified ad I like it. Especialy the on/off setting.
Bigger Font. Great!
That the system rememers what picture I have set as wallpaper when I change theme.
Battery/whatch overlapp fix. Looks realy good.

What I don’t like
Ps3 start up screen. The old was special, I realy dislike the new start up.
PSN store in games. We already have one icon and don’t need another. It realy messes me up when I want to check troophies in-game.

Will there ever be BRAVIA sync on the “fat” ps3 or is there a hardware limitation?
Please remove the second psn icon, make the whole screen grey if you want to but please remove it!

Tommy012345 9 September, 2009 @ 12:02 am   323

“we have a little surprise prepared especially for our PAL readers that we hope you’ll agree is worth the wait!”

I wonder what that’ll be?

Hi Mike, thanks very much for your responses. I think you have addressed some of the most common gripes with the new interface. That’s good news that you’re looking into have the font sizes customisable for us.

I have a comment about dynamic themes. I hear that it’s not possible to create one without a devkit. This means that we’ll only see professional developers producing them and it also means that these developers can keep charging high prices for them.

Please let us, the consumers have the possibility to create our own dynamic themes.

Please remove point (2) on the BBC iPlayer. I bought my PS3 in Spain (’cause I’m spanish) but now I’ve moved to the UK and have got addicted to wathing Top Gear and Dragon’s Den on iPlayer.

I think a simple IP check is enough. What’s the point of having a PSN account with a UK address if the IP is not a UK one?

Smegzilla 9 September, 2009 @ 12:05 am   326

So, from what you’re saying, you removed the game startup time because you felt like it? I’d like the chime back, starting up a game does feel pretty empty now. It’s very very noticeable that it’s not there when it’s been there since I got my PS3 way back when.

Also, the “What’s New” section doesn’t work properly. Sort it out please. For one thing Batman: AA doesn’t show up in it, so it’s useless if I’ve been playing that. Also you might want to try actually updating it, it’s been showing the same info since day one as far as I recall. A bit useless really.

I’m not sure I buy your excuse for getting us no dynamic themes either, you should have known they’d be coming and been prepared.

Thanks for looking into the option to reduce the oversized text and icons, they really do look ridiculous in HD. I also appreciate you looking into fixing Uncharted (and hopefully the various other instabilities in 3.0).

AzYWaSCrazY 9 September, 2009 @ 12:06 am   327

I honestly think we should let the angry video game nerd review this firmware update and have a talk with sony 😛

Smegzilla 9 September, 2009 @ 12:07 am   328

On another note the surprise better not be some game everyone’s already been waiting for, that wouldn’t be a good surprise. Something people haven’t been expecting, asking or waiting for would be a surprise.

im sorry but with no Jingle, it save all but 4 odd seconds

There are 2 criteria for the presence of the iPlayer icon on the XMB:

(1) A PSN account or guest account as a UK resident

(2) A PS3 console sold in the UK. If you don’t have either of them, the icon will not show up.

For a better experience in the future, we are looking at the possibility of removing point (2). However (1) is required to identify your country of residence.

It should be more than a ‘POSSIBILTY’ of removing point 2, after all it’s SONYs fault you replaced your Faulty product with one that DIFFERS to the original.

Again, OPTIONAL FONT sizes SHOULD be STANDARD, not a ‘possibility’. Why ruin a gorgeous XMB with icons/text for the blind?!

And no mention of what must be the most hated part of this update, the friends list. No surprise there then.

onlineatron 9 September, 2009 @ 12:23 am   331

I know we give you lot a hard time, I would hate to be in your shoes as it must be a tough day at the office when you get a bunch of comments like this. But you have to understand where we are coming from.. as consumers, many of us who invested large sums of money into your consoles, we feel jaded by the lack of support given to PAL regions when compared to SCEA and SCEJ.

I hope all becomes clear in the morning and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us on thursday! =D

Please fix the friends list its ugly. No one wants the grey boxes around our friends list.

bunimomike 9 September, 2009 @ 12:27 am   333

@4 posted “Game start chime should be at least optional!!! I loved it and it’s really hard to live when it’s gone”

Get real… It’s a tiny jingle, not your overly-touchy Uncle!

onlineatron 9 September, 2009 @ 12:27 am   334

Also, just been over to the US blog.

Can we expect any news of a public MAG beta here?

The possibility exists that we can create our own dynamic themes in the future?

In any case, ps3 users would appreciate a response.

Ragnarok-NZ 9 September, 2009 @ 12:45 am   336

Well all this talk about Firmware 3.0 for the PS3 is nice and all, but what about the PSP?
What the heck happened with Badman and Fate/Unlimited Codes? They both got pulled off the PSN.

And what about a firmware update for the PSP? Are we getting one?
Also, arent we supposed to be getting “hundreds” of games for PSN before the launch, or at launch time for the PSP GO?

It’s these questions that im interested in Blog team. Hope you can answer atleast one of those questions. Thanks again.

P.S. Any news of Dissidia or Soul Caliber heading to PSN?

Very dissapointing response from you guys, did not even tackle the main thing everyone doesnt like the GIANT UGLY GREY BOXES on the friends list.

* I Like the original “Sony Computer Entertainment” & “PLAYSTAION 3″ Logo @ console startup & before a game executes on my UK 60GB & JP MGS Hagane Machines, I understand the “rebranding Stategy” but I have not as yet purchased a PS3 Slim, why FORCE the slim’s Logo on me?
* The font Issue is understandable on certain Large TV sets, I don’t (yet) have this problem, but the new font size makes the text too large, again why force this wholesale change without options?

The update on the whole was fine and well received however for some users it seems as things that were not issues have been “fixed”

You would need an SDK for that.

Dave-The-Rave 9 September, 2009 @ 12:50 am   340

Any news on Avatars.

Also when they are ready will they only come out on Thursdays or when they are ready?

Dante_Zero 9 September, 2009 @ 12:51 am   341

it will probably be a free theme or something along those lines. wouldnt surprise me if it was a free God of War theme just to rub our faces in it. localization issues with themes? really? do i look like im an eight year old that would believe that. dont think so.
its the same pathetic excuse used for not releasing GoW collection or LBP:GOTY in all teritorys. does Andrew House and SCEE not want my money surely they do right? no?

still think its stupid we dont have a scheme simular to Qore to gain access to betas. i really luv something like that buts whats the likely hood. all ive seen on the Q&A is excuses and stating what we already know. if someone at SCEE thinks im gonna be bought off with a free theme then someone is wrong.

Von-Alucard 9 September, 2009 @ 12:51 am   342

It would be nice to toggle off the new friends list. I hope you can do something about that.

forcefullpower 9 September, 2009 @ 12:52 am   343

When using PS3 media server when I browse my films if I leave it for a couple of seconds all the names of the films disappear apart from the one selected. This is really annoying since I have a long list to look through.

Thanks for the Q&A.
I do have a question though regarding the What’s New feature. The problem I have with it is that out of the 4 suggestions made (the other 2 items being Store and We recommend), I already own 3 games (WipEout Fury, Shatter and Fat Princess).
I don’t understand how it makes sense to suggest me to buy games I already own ?

Thanks for this nice q&a. I hope we can have more (or get some tips sometimes)

Getting feedback like this is very appreciated.
I actually don’t have a problem with update 3.0 but it’s obvious many do?
I do believe however that considering the vast majority of PS3 sales are in PAL territories that SONY must invest more time/resources into having similar services to what SCEA, SCEJ provide.
Excuses like language, currency licensing issues etc are wearing thin. It is up to SONY to work around these issues with the greatest expediency.
Everyone in every PAL territory looks at the USA/SONY relationship and feel a little sickened… and annoyed. I’m convinced that where SCEA is a well oiled machine the relative PAL (UK, Aus, Ger…etc) arms of SCE are only just keeping up?

I love my PS3 and look forward to inclusions like PlayTV, Movie Store, ABCiView etc. I just wish SONY would communicate more openly with us.

So, many of the most important question was unanswered..

* When will cross game voice chat come?
* when will party system come?
* when will a MUCH improved web browser come? (barley works whit many of the flash heavy sites etc)
* In game music on all games??

Should be an great way to show that you listened to the community to answer these questions and give an reasonable time frame.

I have a feeling the “surprise” won’t be as good as we all think it will be. As a friend said most of the surprises SCEE think is great turn out to be quite the opposite for us :/

hey Sony PlayStation Team! 😀
thank you very much, for this quick and informative Q&A. overall i really liked the FW 3.00, the sparkles are beautiful! the enhanced copy and paste is perfect, now i can even send web links to my friends! plus all the other good new stuff.

the only minor “problem” i’ve with this update is the HUGE fontsize. it used to look sleek on my hdtv the way it was before. but now it’s simply too big, and doesn’t look styleish anymore. it’s anoying that now a lot of my longer named video files “have to” scroll in the video name area.
so thank you very much for working on it, hope it becomes somewhat optional.

and hey one long ago taken out feature i really like to be optional aswell, is the ability to let videos running while you navigate through the xmb. i always liked the feeling of doing that. cause if i really wanted to pause the video i just press “pause”.

so have a nice day in the office guys, you’re doning a great job! keep those exciting updates comming. 😀

The BBCiPlayer is a piece of trash anyway so don’t worry about the trash people!

Also you can listen to music while surfing the net, I tried it and it worked:/

redknight4 9 September, 2009 @ 1:27 am   353

I found the news tiker to be a prolem especialy when it doesn’t get the current headlines form the psn blog us or eu and only the old info from what’s new that bearly gets changed at all. and the turn off whats new setting in the system menu only tuns it off when no internet connection is available. Would like to be able to turn the tiker off compleatly.

hasj1990 9 September, 2009 @ 1:37 am   354

also how are us EU ps3 owners meant to be able to get into the MAG Beta, the US has Qore, which puts them into the Beta, they also have this pre-order thing from gamestop, which means whoever purchases a pre order of MAG from gamestop, will automatically be put into the Beta?, what the hell!?, a poles!

Remove the other PS Store “shortcut” no need for it if we have a “What’s New” section :/ now your just being rude and in your face. :( plus Grey boxes should go (Don’t you see how it slightly obstructs the view of the “dynamic” themes…) :/ but keep the white box around the comment and instead of highlighting the I’D to see the comment just make it permanent like it does with seeing what game your friends are on and if it’s “difficult” to see it under some theme’s/wallpapers you can add box to fit around the games title as long as it doesn’t make it look bad. This can be done! Apart from that it’s a good update.

Hope you Read it 😛

I think it’s only logical that you give ppl the option to switch between the new visual stuff and what has become familiar to them over the past few years (much like wipeout hd vs fury).

The jingles need to make a come-back. The console has a strong identity and mustn’t turn it’s back to that so easily. It used to feel like coming home, and now there’s just a black void.

tony5176 9 September, 2009 @ 1:45 am   357

sorry for double post i made a smaller icon set theme, its on its just gray icons no wallpapers

smokeypsd 9 September, 2009 @ 1:46 am   358

A great clarification on the firmware. (I’m 1 of the few ppl who actually like it seems haha).

I did however feel tremendously embarassed after starting up some music, with it delayed and then not able to go back into the XMB. I proceeded to rant on the forums what the hell is going on!!! Only to find i needed to change the very option ur talking about here… My opinion of the firmware immediately improved after this, lol.

The_Man_Spirit 9 September, 2009 @ 1:59 am   359

Thanks SCEE for the detailed reply.
And for highlighting the extra, and necessary, processes involved in releasing PAL PSN content.
Please take the many comments found in the blog with the most positive frame of mind.
As without intonation, some can seem overly harsh.
I look forward to the option of choosing a smaller font for 1080 users, though I understand the current v3.0 font helps 576 users.
I hope the SCEE team hasn’t given up on Bravia Sync for PS3 ‘not so slim’ users.
Bring on the next update, and big ups to all those involved to bring it to us, I say!

AshAbuse 9 September, 2009 @ 2:07 am   360

I like 3.0, so long as you get rid of those grey friend boxes, and make the icons smaller. Plus I hope the thursday surprise is SCEE exclusive (for a short while) and free.
Go here for my view on things. This dynamic theme thing is the first step to SCEE playing equal with the rest of the world. Which is good news.

woobieizer 9 September, 2009 @ 2:19 am   361

Concerning Uncharted: Drake’s misFortune:
Did Sony test this game prior to 3.0 release? How is it that Sony is just now finding this, If Sony didn’t know prior what the problem is how could one say Sony knows anything about anything?
Concerning Ticker/What’s New:
Did Sony read their own directions for use? Disabling it via Account Management seems a moot point.
Concerning Auto Launching:
Did Sony test game autolaunching when booting a system w/gdisk?
Concerning Dynamic Themes:
Seems to me the public liked developing there own themes. If Sony have such difficulty publishing content for the world, I surmise that dev’ing for the smaller PSN Stores must not be too profitable for SONY. Why pee in the wind?
Concerning the XMB:
Prior to 3.0 the XMB had a single purpose. Look for the function.
Now it has a different purpose.. AVOID the redundancy!
You should consider changing the name to XRB.
Concerning System Software:
If Sony considers 3.0 release material, Sony should logically consider Monopoly money legal tender. Thank you for Sony’s patience.
We hang on every little hint of a whisper on Sony’s feedback. But by then we’ve already figured it out for Sony right?!

Frost_Senpai 9 September, 2009 @ 2:38 am   362

I want to be able to change that opening jingle to something like a female Voice saying “playstation 3″ that jingle should be customizable and maybe change the opening picture maybe music to to play when is start or a proper screen saver

Frost_Senpai 9 September, 2009 @ 2:40 am   363

oh and to customize my avatar would be nice thank you

Ghost_Assassin11 9 September, 2009 @ 2:47 am   364

Firstly thanks for the slow response to everyones concerns? Especially as the american blog had only 250 odd comments & they gave an acknowledgement that they where looking into said problems thier customers were having! Within a couple hours! At my last count you recieved 786 comments! Look I appreciate that 3.00 has not met your or ours expectation & not conforming to the Sony’s, vision or great plan! And was probably designed for the new slim. Could you please look into my previous comment concerning game freezes, @ 0200hrs this mornning,I can not get pass the notice on WAW I’m not sure whether it’s a problem with associated game freezes or Duel shock controllers that has occured since 3.00? Yours very not happy! By the way don’t ask for comments, if your going to treat them as postive and negative? I belive all comments are postive, otherwise you wouldn’t have got all this very valuable information! ” THE WHEEL THAT SQUEAKS THE LOUDEST IS THE ONE THAT GETS THE GREASE” Also I’m not 5, keep your condescending surprise & fix the wheel!

Frost_Senpai 9 September, 2009 @ 2:52 am   365

a lot of things the ps3 should do it doesn’t but I stick it xbox can go to hell if I could wipe them from the face of the earth but it’d be nice if you guys would think a little harder when make updates no disrespect thanks you all of you

What about Black as a color option, is it gone forever now?

Fox-One-1 9 September, 2009 @ 3:30 am   368

Please make the size of items on XMB optional. Old style was much more elegant. Thanks for hearing our opinions out – that and your hard work made PS3 successful. It was first time that I heard of “complexities of PAL Playstation Store”, even thought the evidence is all around us. What makes it so complex? – Translation work to many languages? Contracts? There are millions who use english PS Store. I wish you could take it as priority for releases… And make it as successful as US and JPN stores.

I can live with most of the changes but i HATEHATEHATE seeing the psn store icon in the video area when i don’t even have access to a video store as I live in Canada …

and there’s no way to get rid of it

fix por favor

SpyDudeFX 9 September, 2009 @ 4:09 am   370

The chime should be optional, I want it back. Regarding font/icon resizing, this is an absolute must. It shouldn’t be that you’re “looking at the possibly” but rather, are working on correcting this. No one requested larger “visually impaired” icons and font, so Sony needs to scale this back or quickly implement the option to do so. It’s dreadful!

bluebottle4077 9 September, 2009 @ 4:13 am   371

make the jingle optional.

Chrisius 9 September, 2009 @ 4:17 am   372

Lame excuse for the chime. It only chimed when you started a game anyway, there was nothing wrong with it. If it was about the logo, then change it to the new one and keep the chime. A lot of needless pointless changes in this “update”.

Oh, and fix my now ugly friends list please. I liked it the way it was.

Chrisius 9 September, 2009 @ 4:18 am   373

Oh I almost forgot, fire the people that thought these were good ideas the were “implementing”, or rather removing just for the sake of it.

yeah i would also really like to be able to enable the game start chime. i dont care if it adds a second to the load time. its classic and its cool. i would also like to be able to enable the old playstation font instead of the new ps3 logo.
also the auto fade really sux.
the first 2 probs that i have listed… as many others have… we could probably get used to in time. shouldnt have to but whatever. the auto fade though, that really need to have an option to turn that off. it is really annoying! when im scrolling through my media server i want to be able to pause for a second and still be able to see what is coming.
all in all its a great update. just a few small niggles that some of us have.

Bastrd11 9 September, 2009 @ 4:30 am   375

Thank you so much for addressing the public’s concern.. it goes a long way to even just acknowledge the issues raised let alone address them. Maybe you guys should share with your friends over at SCEA this novel concept! :)

Thanks a lot for the updates and answers.

However, my main issue with the firmware update was always with the added PSN store bags. These are awfully annoying, and only one is necessary. The ‘What’s New’ icon and the store ticker box in the corner is plenty of extra advertising by itself. Please make the ticker and the extra PSN bags optional like the text size. I don’t mean to nitpick, but these were really annoying changes. Other than that, this update is fantastic. Well, other than the hideous friend’s list boxes, of course…. Thanks for listening.

When an update changes existing settings, PLEASE inform people! There were people everywhere who had no idea why they could no longer play music while web browsing. I think it is just good manners… don’t you?
The PS3 extended the upsampling capability to audio tracks stored on HDD and storage media with v3.00. Some function on the XMB such as the internet browser and photo gallery outputs with 48KHz only so you need to set audio outputs as 48Khz to enjoy music and net surfing.

Boldizzle 9 September, 2009 @ 5:03 am   378

@Ti_Dus: I agree, I miss the PS start chime and if that were optional, it would be awesome coz then both sides win.

3.0 seemed to be annoying for a lot of people.

I have 2 PS3 at home, and I went through most of the games people are complaning, like Uncharted, BF1943, Killzone, and I must say that I haven’t encountered any problems on both of my systems.

Now I’m getting used to the new firmware.
I like the What’s New, acting as shortcut for most played games. The Ps3 schemes, grayboxes and glitter doesn’t bother me at all(the last one solved with themes).
What a really didn’t like is making a big deal out of dynamic themes, and releasing only one, at U$ 3,00. It should have been for free, so people would get to know what it is all about.

Although I didn’t have much problems with 3.0, I appreciatte that Sony is listening to the community and came up with this Q&A.

Thanks guys

I want the firmware “feature” of blurring the background and making the rest of the non-selected text to be the way it was before, or atleast make it an option…I like looking through my music, video, and picture selection in a list, but since the update it just repeatedly disappears until I move the controller again. There are quite a few things that irritate me about this update, but that one is the most bothersome. I dont like the way the friends list has boxes around it either. I didn’t like the information bar before and liked the option to disable it, but I HAVE TO read the new “ticker” at the top NOW that I updated. Clock, useful. MSG alert, useful. MANDATORY ticker, not very useful, I remember back around 2.0 update you people (Sony) told me to turn off my information bar to “fix” it from slowing my system down, but now you make me have it.

My only gripe, and it’s probably already been mentioned: I’d like to be able to turn off the scrolling announcement text at the upper-right of the screen in the XMB. It’s annoying, distracting, telling me things I already know, and ruining an otherwise clean and attractive interface.

Oh yeah – what A2theC said, too! 😀

I’d be happy if the other lines of text didn’t fade away completely.

NiGhTHaWk830 9 September, 2009 @ 6:13 am   383

I appreciate you guys giving us notice that you are aware of a problem with Uncharted and other games and are working on a fix, but really, I’ve had my PlayStation 3 since Thursday, September 3rd, and as of today, have been unable to advance past Chapter THREE of Uncharted, amounting to not even ONE HOUR of playtime.

This amounts to a total of SIX days, and counting, that Uncharted has been almost completely UNPLAYABLE for me.

Absolutely unacceptable, Sony.

There are still some things to do:
– The RSS options are GONE!
– The amount of PSStore icons doesn’t make the playstation experience any better! It feels VERY pushy.
– The explanation of why the start game chime is gone is not that satisfying. It really made the experience better to see the Playstation3 logo at the start. I believe it is not that difficult to turn it off only for nongames servieces. And 2 sec of faster load time? C’mooon….

Accordiny these things the 3.0 FW made the playstation experience feel cheaper… a lot cheaper…

B1355R0K 9 September, 2009 @ 6:26 am   385

I don’t have a problem with any of that. I like the glitter, I don’t miss the chime, I’m not currently playing Uncharted. What I want to know is why ever since I’ve upgraded I have system freezes when I leave the web browser or from watching a DVD? Hmmm? Answer me that Sony rep.

Gibbz4887 9 September, 2009 @ 6:52 am   386

Please add trophy level to the friends list, its kinda stupid that its not there!! AND PLEASE BRING BACK THE GOD DAM CHIME WHEN YOU START THE GAMES,KINDA STUPID BUT IT ADDED SOMETHING TO THE CONSOLE!!Thanks for changing the font size back tho : )

I hope one of the Dynamic Themes is the LittleBigPlanet Theme I heard about.
The next Update may be out in November (for Movie and Comic Store).
I’ve got one question to ask Mark.
Will I need to update my PSP for the Comics and Movie Store(as I don’t have wireless connection).
Please answer this question.
Thank you.

MikeyMui 9 September, 2009 @ 7:20 am   388

Glad to know they are attempting to make some of the new changes optional. I’m definitely looking forward to reverting back to the original font and icon size. I hope they decide to reduce the amount of PSN store icons from three back to one. It’s a bit annoying to have the PS3 start up with the “What’s new” icon as the default location. It was better when it started off at the games column, with the disc icon being the default location. Now, when I’m going between the different sections, it feels like Sony is trying to shove the store down my throat by hoping that the higher amount of store icons will increase the likelihood of me checking out the store and buying something, which actually makes me avoid the store even more. I’m hoping the option to revert back to v2.8 setting will make it into the next update.

HEADSTAR 9 September, 2009 @ 7:21 am   389

hey foks, you are abel to split the theme you downloaded
use the icons from the theme and use the couller ther are
in the ps3 system.

im using this theme and the whit colour and -2 or -3 in light kontrol
now my bacground match the grey boxes you all hate

i dont care about footbaal team, cars, cod4 clan pictures or anny at all
just the icons

MikeyMui 9 September, 2009 @ 7:34 am   390

I completely agree with you about the blurring/disappearing when going through music, video, and any other files. I forgot how annoying that is. That needs to be addressed as well. It’s very annoying to be looking through your music to have all the names disappear in two seconds. I think any changes made to the UI should ALWAYS have an option to revert back to the original setting. I think that’s why most people didn’t have a huge problem when the RSS feed was originally introduced because there was an option to turn it off. The forced nature that Sony is implementing is not befitting them.

Skookie30 9 September, 2009 @ 7:50 am   391

the 4 exta stores are special for reject of games that no-one cares about it also sony pawn shop (cash converters).

i can guess the surprise, the surprise is……….

DarkFame 9 September, 2009 @ 7:53 am   393

I turned off the previous RSS news feed scroller before the 3.00 update, and now there is no way of turning it on or off. For my account it means that it’s permanently turned off.

What about the new friendlist look? It seems like many are not happy with the new look.

Sutorcen 9 September, 2009 @ 7:58 am   394

Who on earth didn’t like the chime when a game started? We loved our games and apps starting with the chime. A few secs of booting time can’t replace the chime that has been with us throughout all of the Playstation brands history. By removing it you removed a piece of history.
Who thought that putting the PS Store Icon almost in all categories is functional? It clutters the XMB with something that’s pretty much useless. Especially when you don’t have a Video Store in your country. The more options a Bar has the more time it takes you to scroll through it. So I can’t see where you saved as some time.
If you want to save us time. Fix the web browsers speed and give as subtitle and Matroska container support for crying out loud. Don’t clutter our XMB and remove the PS3 chime. At least give us the option to choose what we want.
Also I find it very hypocritical that you give us Dynamic Themes only to charge us 2 Euros for each theme. Haven’t we paid enough to MM for LBP? Was it so hard for them to release the LPB Dynamic theme free to the people as the first ever Dynamic Theme? Is this the way we are going to pay for the PS3s price cut? What a rip off.

Wow, reading some of the comments on here you’ve got to wonder what’s missing in people’s lives that they can get so upset about a games console user interface.

If the firmware update had broken everyone’s games, no controllers worked, made the audio sound like it was being played through a 1950’s radio then I’d expect Sony to get some fierce criticism.

But no, a few minor UI tweaks later and people are posting how much they hate Sony, how Sony have ruined their lives, how Media Molecule (who have brought PS3 owners one of the most exciting, unique video games for many years) are trying to rip everyone off….

Wow, I hope none of you every suffer a real tragedy in life because I’d worry for you, I really would.

I’m generally happy with 3.0, with only a couple of minor niggles.

Firstly, a functional thing – now that the iPlayer icon is on the PS3 it seems a shame that you cannot use the Bluetooth remote to do anything like Play/Pause. Not sure if that would require a change from the BBC or Sony though so that one is just an idea.

What I can’t stand though is the new friends list. Those grey boxes are the ugliest thing I’ve seen on my PS3 since the time you guys stapled a big orange ticker box onto the lovely and beautiful XMB. Please either change this back or make it an option.

Dynamix81 9 September, 2009 @ 8:17 am   397

I’m really gonna miss that startup jingle!!! Can’t you guys just enable it for games?!? The primairy purpose of a PS3 is still gaming…

Just so my questions don’t get buried under all the comments here.

– Why does it take forever to get certain trophy patches here?? personally waiting on 50 cent: Blood on the sand.

why is it the QA always pick up on things like themes and demos that have been working perfectly for the us for days, weeks or months yet you fail to spot when you sell a demo or you put the wrong region’s version of some dlc dlc up or you fail to notice that the firmware required to run a demo has not actually been released.
if the scee quality control is so strict how do you miss such fundemental errors as those listed.
among the problems people are having with the firmware i’d like to reiterate the need for an option to change the font colour, and size of course.
as it is any light theme, like the afrika theme, renders the xmb unusable as the text becomes virtually invisible.
so you’re forced to keep a dark theme for the xmb.
i like the afrika theme actually, but i cannot use the xmb while i have it on, so please, pretty please, give us the option to change the colour of the text.

Sutorcen 9 September, 2009 @ 8:22 am   400

Ps1 had a logo and chime when a game started. Ps2 has it. PSP has it. Now PS3 suddely doesn’t need it?

I very much agree with neozeo.

– The amount of PSStore icons doesn’t make the playstation experience any better! It feels VERY pushy.

Accordingly these things the 3.0 FW made the playstation experience feel cheaper… a lot cheaper…

NOZonline 9 September, 2009 @ 8:24 am   401

PROBLEM with the what’s new section, Batman arkham.. Will not apper in the section after playing it. Every other game I have shows in this section so why not batman, but then agian Batman has some issues….. Like when quiting Batman it sometimes freezes my ps3 in the worst way posable- it beeps three times and freezes with a black screen and the only way to turn off is to hit the switch at the back. That can’t be good for it, I’ve had to do this 4 times now. I think I’ll leave Batman alone till this MAJOR ISSUE is fix.

you have to wonder what’s missing in some people’s lives that they get so upset about what people are writing on the internet.

and it has broken games and it has stopped controllers working.

Cpt_Ramz 9 September, 2009 @ 8:28 am   403

the chime is wicked, id gladly trade 2secs of load time for the jingle. i do wish they bring it back even if its with the new logo

Thanks for the response. Especially would like the option to change back the text, and hopefully also the friendslist (which surprisingly, you didn’t mention at all).

Ross_K91 9 September, 2009 @ 8:34 am   405

This is what should be done with the XMB and the friends list problem.

I love these mock ups!!

Ross_K91 9 September, 2009 @ 8:35 am   406

^^^ well that link dont work :(

I for one didn’t update my PS3 to the latest firmware why. Because it removed the cool features that actually made the PS3 “PS3″.

I want the chrome “gling” sound back or at least give us the option to make it “on” or “off”. I don’t mind the extra second as you guys use as one of your excuses or that “we now offer non-game content”, cause that’s not true at all I for one don’t have either VidZone or BBC iPlayer. Why you ask? Because they are NOT AVAILABLE IN MY COUNTRY. That’s stupid man, you can’t say we offer now non-game content when the iPlayer is only available in the UK and the VidZone is only available in some PAL territories (UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia and Ireland) And I want the new boot-up “PS3″ logo off my screen, it looks really bad and stupid since most of us already have the original font. Or at least give us the options to whether have the classic boot-up “on” or “off” . I really don’t mind the rest of the update, what I really wish there was more of is MORE CUSTOMIZATION.

What about the ugly friend-list? Are there any plans to improve or change that?

Not sure what i was expecting from waiting a week for a Q&A
All seems pretty basic stuff that we all knew but I suppose it is still good to hear it being recognized.

Not sure how they managed to ignore the ugly grey box friend list thing?

My only guess is this is some feature that will show trophy totals etc in the future at some point or maybe fancy avatars??

The funniest part was reading how they didn’t have time to get the themes out due to the constant issues SCEE and all its stores present…… not heard that for a while!
How on earth did they manage to release the slim console world wide but can’t get a theme uploaded??

Skookie30 9 September, 2009 @ 9:05 am   415

it looks like Sony slip up Again.

no trine this week it was……

Update:The Sony Playstation Twitter account just tweeted to say that it was an error: “Correction: Trine should NOT have been included in our PS3 new releases Tweet this week!  Apologies for the error.” So no surprise there then. 😛

GunstarHeroX 9 September, 2009 @ 9:13 am   416

Appreciate the update. I would like the following fixed/made optional:

– The game startup chime/logo.
– No extra link to PS Store in Games section.
– Friends list boxes.

Other than that I like the update for the most part. Can’t believe how much I miss that damn chime. 😛

I see no mention of the XMB freezing issues I and many others are experiencing on both the old and new PS3 models since the introduction of 3.0. In game freezing is mentioned but not the XMB home screen.

My controller disconnects from the PS3 (4 lights flash on the controller) and the PS3 is unresponsive to any press and hold of the power button and can only be reset by unplugging from the wall. Also when exiting some games the system will crash and remain on a black screen, again a power cycle is the only cure. I hope this is something Sony are investigating too.

Thanks alot for all this fancy bling bling stuff.

pleas reply on this!

myiagros 9 September, 2009 @ 9:26 am   419

That really answers very few of the critasisms, completely avoiding some of the most important.

Sony it is possible to please many more of the people much more of the time if you make the completely arbitrary purely asthetic changes optional.

By all means tell us the virtues of them, but let us choose whether we want them or not. If they don’t add functionallity then don’t force them on us.

myiagros 9 September, 2009 @ 9:27 am   420

Has anyone else noticed that since 3.00 the images of the last 8 trophies earned, in the user profiles screen, take an absolute age to load, if they load at all?

balaenidae 9 September, 2009 @ 9:47 am   421

Is it right that cross game invites will be availible with Dirt 2? Is this due to 3.0 or just a feature not implemented by developers before?

StrongerThanYou 9 September, 2009 @ 9:56 am   422

This is about the ticker…

Now on my PS3 the ticker doesn’t display latest information as it normally did before v3.00. How do i get it so it doesn’t just show the time, friends online and messages?

How do you turn of the fading-away thing when browsing videos, photos or music??

Thanks for the update or should I say response.

I thought the update wasn’t too bad, in fact in my book any update is good as it’s like an early xmas present.

1) However, the whole font thing I think is based on user preference and also the size of TV, distance and eye sight. So rather than just turn the changes on/off; offering a selection from various size options would be better.

2) Also can you make the XMB text Inverse or something; against some of these themes the text become impossible to read (try the Africa theme for example)?

3) When will the PAL/EU ticker service work?

4) Any chance of an update to the Music players search/selection function? Trying to select a single track from thousands is off putting,

PS. You can’t please everyone all of the time 😉

FacanferPSN2 9 September, 2009 @ 9:57 am   425

Is from the game itself, when i had update 2.80 and play the demo of Dirt 2 the cross game invites were working.

So Jem, is it morning yet? Did you see Mark come in the office?

Posted on 8 September, 2009 at 9:18 pm by Jem Alexander

That would be telling!

I’m replying to this comment so that you all see it — Mark will be replying to more of your responses in the morning.”

Sogaard, I’m afraid you can’t. Imagine opening up Windows Explorer and having the rest of the files that your mouse isn’t hovering over disappear or clicking an icon on your desktop and finding your fancy custom wallpaper goes all blurry hurting your eyes… That would be completely stupid wouldn’t it? Who would want such a crazy feature?

Can someone at Sony PLEASE explain why this has been implemented? It serves no purpose, is detrimental in many ways and is absolutely UI design lunacy! It really has to be optional. The problem isn’t so bad with the default theme but any other wallpaper – it’s a nightmare.

Yes just the thing I was wondering.. We got a lot of our more burning questions that need answers if it’s possible to answer them at all. :(

Please help us out here..

Stargatefreak 9 September, 2009 @ 10:07 am   429

Thank you for the answers!!!

loonytoon1982 9 September, 2009 @ 10:12 am   430

Yes, I noticed the exact same thing yesterday. Usually it took no longer than a few seconds to show the icons but now it’s taking upwards of 90 seconds to show all 8.

As for the “can’t please everyone all the time” comment, I find that derogatory and insulting towards your customers. The fact is that you SHOULD be trying to please all of your customers all of the time. Also thanking people for all the “positive” feedback could be taken as “negative feedback isn’t welcome”

SmoggyPhil 9 September, 2009 @ 10:20 am   431

Right, i’m one of the people to criticise SCEE for a lot of issues, but if you people are complaining over a 2 second chime and logo, it might be time to see your psychoanalyst.

And get some fresh air.

Stonesthrow 9 September, 2009 @ 10:26 am   432

First of all, its good to hear that PAL players are being thought of and get a little surprise, cause I for one am sick of always feeling ‘discriminated’ as a European gamer, games release way later out here, the EU store is pathetic compared to it’s American and Japanese counterparts, just stuff like that..I realise it’s harder out here with all the taxes and all the different languages and all that but still..sometimes Sony really gives an impression that Europeans can just ‘wait it out’ you know..So it’s good to give us a little something extra once in a while..

That being said, about the firmware..: I personally hate the cosmetic changes you made..especially the font size and the new friends look (EVERYBODY thinks its ugly..)
Also, why is there a second PS store right above the Game icon :s I prefer having the Trophies there so u can just click up and see your trophies during the game..Which brings me to another thing : can’t you make a quick button for quiting a game when using the xmb during gameplay, its annoying having to find the ‘quit game’ option all the time..

I had all my downloaded content on the hard disc organised in my own custom album folders – full games, demos, PS3 Eye games, PS1 Classics. When I updated to 3.0, everything was thrown into one giant mess of a folder. Pressing square only organises into PS3/PS1. What happened to my custom folders?

I got to agree with above statement..

There are a lot of importing things SCEE should be tackling

– Pricing regarding the different stores in some countries the difference is way to big. for example €8 difference in a platinum re-release.

– The poor state the European playstation stores are in. yeah okay you need to manage a lot but the cure should be hire more help. And if that does not help why not move each respective store to its country. So the people in that country are responsible for localisation.

– The videostore
– Vidzone not yet available for everyone
– Cross game chat

And a lot more that has already been mentioned.

woobieizer 9 September, 2009 @ 10:33 am   435

Main article: New Coke

On April 23, 1985, Coca-Cola, amid much publicity, attempted to change the formula of the drink with “New Coke”. Follow-up taste tests revealed that most consumers preferred the taste of New Coke to both Coke and Pepsi, but Coca-Cola management was unprepared for the public’s nostalgia for the old drink, leading to a backlash. The company gave in to protests and returned to the old formula under the name Coca-Cola Classic on July 10, 1985.

Just FIX IT.

Bloody_Marcel 9 September, 2009 @ 10:34 am   436

That’s odd Bavels. I had my games organized in the same way, and while 3.0 did put them in “one giant mess of a folder”, pressing Square restored everything to how it was before the update.

Thankyou for keeping us up-to-date! For me the best bit of info was the 48K output rate info 😀

Pathetic. You make us wait until Tuesday for that!

– People want the chime and logo back before a game starts.

– The lack of iPlayer icon is totally Sony’s fault. Most people with one of these European units have one because Sony sent it to them following their original UK system breaking. Absolutely terrible.

– Regarding the XMB fonts/icons, “looking at the possibility of making the changes optional” really isn’t a good enough answer. It’s one of the most popular complaints and it needs to be fixed NOW! I also want an answer regarding the horrible blurry background and filenames dissapearing after 2 seconds. You’ve also completely ignored the requests to remove all of the extra PSN Store icons that no-one wants.

– The answer regarding playing music whilst web browsing is just pathetic. It worked before, so fix it.

– The answer regarding themes is typical corporate rubbish. I’d love to know what needed translating in a dynamic theme. Also, why was this content last minute? Surely it’s been ready since 3.0 went ‘gold’?

– Uncharted isn’t the only game having problems. There’s also the problem of certain controllers not snycing, both of these points have been completely ignored.

So there you have it. You haven’t given people the answers they wanted, and you’ve selectively decided which points to answer. I suppose anything that isn’t covered is here to stay as that’s what Sony have decded in their infinite wisdom.

Hi what about those of us with models numbers ending in 04 (mine’s a refurb) will we have any problems with the video store when it launches? I would actually rather have another replacement back to an 03 model tbh

Maybe adding small spacings between the friends “cards” would make it look a little bit better

I’m not so concerned regarding the firmware update – although you have turned a pleasant, clean xmb into a dogs breakfast.

The issues I have are with the pricing that SCEE continue to apply to PSN items, and how much of a rip off they are in comparison to US/Japan prices.

Also, the disparity between what SCEE PSN has available, compared to US/Japan is a complete joke. No one wants excuses regarding translation/leagls etc – we want a great service, comparable to the other PSNs!!!!!!

And why oh why is GOW 1 and 2 not coming to SCEE this year – just rubbish rubbish rubbish.

It’s almost as if you do not want our money!!!!!!

Also I want the start up tune back the abbreviated version stinks big time!!!!

Is there a sollution for the heavy blowing of the cooler?
When playing Assasins Creed, after about 5 minutes of play, I can’t even hear the sound of the game clearly anymore, because of the noise the cooler is making… :(

And PS: please, please change the PS3 icon back to Playstation 3! Why change such a beautiful logo, in something so horrific?

Is there any chance of Sony adding the option to group friends???
Lots of teams and clans for different games, so grouping them would be of great help!!! we can group music, videos and games, so why not friends???

FreakerUK 9 September, 2009 @ 11:15 am   446

Thanks for the update Mike. Personally i liked the 3.0 update. I cant see what all the fuss is about with the friends boxes, i mean, to me they just look like the top of everyones gamecard, and no one has moaned about how that looked. Im guessing they will be adding more info into those boxes over time, like quick look trophy (like your portable ID’s you can create on this site.)
I think they should put the email notification icon that sits next to your freinds name actually on the card instead of to the left of it like it originally was though :)
The ‘whats new’ panel is good (a bit large if anything) but more regular updates to it would be good.
I like the way its lists your 3 last played games (would be nice to have that info in your friends list boxes too), and reminded me of something i wanted to see in for a while. To be able to collate a list of all your games as you play them, and add it to a tab in your gamecard, so friends can see what games you have.
Cant quite understand the need for 2 store icons though.

Waiting patiently for cross game chat, and party play 😀

Shift_Breaker 9 September, 2009 @ 11:20 am   447

Is there any chance of future updates allowing us to change the colour of the font for the XMB? What’s the point of downloading a theme as pretty as the afrika one, or even something simple like the Mirror’s Edge one when you have to squint to see the writing with the given backgrounds, even with the increased size font of the new update?

when is odworld, odworld abes odessy and pandemonium coming to the australian PSN store?
i would happily pay 50 bucks for each of them, its money in the bank what are you waiting for?

Is EAs FIFA09 online sufferring similar problems to Uncharted since the latest update.

Was playing online last night and a couple of times the PS3 just frooze and rebooted back to the XMB. I have posted on EAs forums but juts wondered if its a common problem?

but keep up the good work looking for ward to new themes,,,

twoofclubs 9 September, 2009 @ 11:33 am   450

Just a quick message to say I don’t hate the 3.00 additions but I think more options would be useful for the friends list background, icon/text size and maybe even to get the Playstation ‘plink plink plink’ intro back for games. The last one I’m not too bothered about but it seems some people miss it.

Also I’ve just seen some great design work for the friends list via Just have a look at the comments, pictures and video and you’ll see that it’s pretty impressive and something you might want to take into consideration.

See, no abuse, just friendly pointers. Good luck with discussing the firmware with the ‘Powers That Be’ and have a lovely day :)

Can you please find out why Australia is included in the EU? Can Australia please be put under the US region?

1. Before firmware 3.0 it was possible to have an audio chat without a cam. It’s now impossible : you must have a cam to make an audio chat !!! Why ?? Where is the improvement ??

2. Thanks to improve the PS2 backward compatibility of 60 Go models : there is again some games who doesn’t whork fine (Jack and Daxter The Precursor Legacy for example). And give backward compatibility to all models if you want to increase the PS3 sales !!

Thanks to listen your faithful custormers.

‘Mark will be replying to more of your responses in the morning.’

it’s 11:45…
Mark, you’ve got 15minutes left to answer questions and comments…. you’ve only done one so far.

I know I shouldn’t be surprised, you are a member of SCEE after all, but seriously!
How on earth can one company get so much wrong when so many people are telling them how to do it right?!!!!

As much as I like the community created XMB ideas, SCEE are not the ‘Powers that Be’ and they do not control what is included within any FW update. They can only make suggestions. So, SCEE, by all means offer our ideas though your feedback tool.

While you are at it, why not push for a worldwide community contest to design the best XMB interface. Sony can then pick and choose the ideas that best fit the business plan. Not only does this appease the community but it also builds on Sony’s Play, Create & Share motto. (dang, I should be in advertising) LOL.

I know SCE have stated that they designed 3.0 for the casual gamer but as you can see, the casual gamer is not here asking for change, the casual gamer does not care what the XMB looks or works like. That’s why they are casual. Us hardcore gamers do care and want a service that reflects the awesomeness of the PS3 as a whole.

Please read/Please consider.

I don’t like the “Fizz”. How do I turn it off?

To turn the fizz off, go to the Theme Settings under Settings on the XMB, you can choose different themes from here. “Classic” is the default theme without the fizz.

Don’t know if everybody already mentioned it, I am not in the mood to read 457 comments, but when you turn the “Fizz” off by choosing the classic theme, then you choose an other theme and then you start a game, well when you quit the fuzz will be back, just a moment, before your theme is loaded and when you are browsing the internet you can see the fuzz in the background.

Kung_Fu_Russ 9 September, 2009 @ 11:51 am   462

“we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages, so it’s more difficult for us to publish last minute content than it is for either the US or Japan”

– SCEE keeps using this as a reason for problems….CHANGE IT! Xbox manages just fine, without a billion different offices across europe!

Also, why doesn’t Europe get a news ticker under the clock?

I give up, apparently my comment was too long and now it’s gone. There was praise in there too, albeit a small amount.

Fix the friends list, it’s hideous and embarassing.

Give us the option to go old school with the start-up, the truncated symphonic warm up is painful to my classical ears.

Sort the media list disapperaing after a few seconds.

Have the artist name visible on album list view.

you may need to copy and paste, and watch out for the spacing, the blog adds some…

Hi Guys,

Quick question to the PS3 team,

I have just come back from the states, & purchased Batman: Arkaham Asylum & Fight Night Round 4. I have a canadian PS3, but a european account, & have downloaded the DLC for both games, but none appear to be working. The main point I would like answered, is does any of the DLC on the euro store, work for games purchased in the USA? My reason for asking, is as I’m unable to get anything I have downloaded to work, especially after purchasing the fight night content. Is there a way to get these to work?

Many thanks

@ Abs_Big_Boss

DLC only works when it’s purchased from the Games original region.

You will need US DLC for it to work.

TheSabreman 9 September, 2009 @ 12:12 pm   470

@ 452

It looks great simple design and with common sense ideas of how to present the store rather than SCE’s spam the xmb with so called shortcuts to help navigation.

If SCE want to us to spend more on the store put good games on at fair prices not inflated ones when compared to the US, your biggest competitor does it easily without spamming the console.

Abs_Big_Boss 9 September, 2009 @ 12:17 pm   471

Hi Danlisa,

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

IS there anyway to download the content from the US store (mainly Batman DLC)?

The batman dlc is free so just set up a us account head in to the store download and install should work.

Abs_Big_Boss 9 September, 2009 @ 12:23 pm   473

Thanks MrLopes, will try that out.

Mousieboy 9 September, 2009 @ 12:29 pm   474

Is there any chance of getting the iPlayer icon up on refurbed models? I suspect not and it’s not a huge thing in all honesty, but as an early adopter who’s been there since the early days it does feel like another little burn, albeit not deliberate.

BlackMage3 9 September, 2009 @ 12:34 pm   475

I’m sorry but this response tells me nothing, in true Sony fashion.
We know or can guess why most of the changes regarding the additional functionality were made or omitted.
(Advertising, EA’s more than likely influence etc.)
What we can’t understand is all the cosmetic changes that we feel is ugly and totally unnecessary.
Don’t speak to us as if we are naive children.
If you can’t be bothered to give us what we ask for and respond in an informative manner, then we will not be bothered to buy your console in the next gen.
We are telling you what we want. If you can’t provide it or can’t be bothered, then we will get it someplace else.

@ BlackMage3

Don’t talk such crap. All you complainers have been doing is whineing since the dawn of time with the PS3.

You won’t “Get it someplace else” because anyone with half a brain cell would see there’s no reason to accomidate the PS3 community in the state it’s in now.

And people have the indecency to complain about the XBox community.

AzYWaSCrazY 9 September, 2009 @ 12:42 pm   477

jonhilt it’s not like people are complaining for no reason.
They payed money for this console.
It’s like you paying someone to redo your house the way you want it and the guy you hired does it the way he likes because he heard this is what people like to see.
I dont think you would appreciate that so dont start trashing people for complaining when Sony say that they are community based and always listens to their consumers and releases something like this that makes people extremly furious.
That means that they need a wakeup call which they are getting :)

Well the morning has come and gone no more then 2 replays in this topic. They must be in a big meeting or something yet again we are almost around the 500 marker… I would like someone over there to wake up and tell us what is going on…

“now we’re offering non-game content such as Vidzone in addition to games.”
No, you don’t. You’re going to, in select territories. Most countries won’t. I honestly don’t care about the jingle – but why does that explanation even make sense?

“It’s not just about adverts — the primary role of the “What’s New” screen is to get you into the game more quickly.”
And the multiple store- icons serve a purpose as well, I suppose..?

“Well guys, I hope that’s helped answer some of your questions. ”
No, that answered the questions you wanted to focus on. But nice try.

“Remember, we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages, so it’s more difficult for us to publish last minute content than it is for either the US or Japan”
Most of the stores have item- descriptions in english. And you’re not using hand- calculators to find the price- points.. I hope. They’re also typically the same countries from release to release. No need to check the Atlas every time.

So as usual – why is this an issue? How come it still doesn’t make sense to translate items targeted at perhaps younger audiences, family games, etc – at the same time as simply releasing the other versions and items earlier to the stores that will never see the other language versions anyway? Playstation has been happy to spite us by never releasing games in particular regions for two generations of consoles now. But that’s apparently not enough – you need to hold up content that isn’t localised as well?

Hi Mark,

Any chance of talking to the ‘Powers That Be’ about introducing file creation and management for photos and movies please?

Clone_501st 9 September, 2009 @ 12:55 pm   482

More than any of the other issues, I’d like the playstation chime back. I hope it’s not removed from the PSP either.

sowasred2012 9 September, 2009 @ 1:06 pm   484

I’d quite like to see some more visualizers for the music player, but other than that I have no real complaints. Well, besides cross game chat.

All these other things, complaints about the sparkles/fuzz and the grey boxes, they’re cosmetic, as long as I can still play my games and my other media, what’s the difference?

elephant_stone 9 September, 2009 @ 1:13 pm   485

Its really good that SCEE are addressing our questions and I dont think firmware 3.0 was all that much of a disaster like some people are making it out to be…anyway…

Please please please can my two questions be answered:

1) Can an option be implemented so that I can tell a piece of software to start upon boot up? It would be even better if each user of the PS3 could have their own setting, so I could boot right into Home and the girlfriend can boot straight into PlayTV.

2) Is Bravia Sync ever gonna come to PS3 Phat? or does it need different HDMI hardware?

Keep up the good work you scamps!

As a Play TV customer, is it possible to move the PlayTV icon back to where it was?

Its very annoying now because I always go to play the bbc iPlayer instead of PlayTV!

The old theme changed with the time of the day, but the new theme is always purple (Or another color chosen in settings). I would like to have the old feature back!

predator_2199 9 September, 2009 @ 1:31 pm   490

I jus don’t like all the purple everywhere and wished you don’t complain to us you have so many stores. AU & NZ prefer 2 be NA region. Where is Namco Museum (Siren)Space?

MetroStar1974 9 September, 2009 @ 1:32 pm   491

I don’t like the design of the friend list as it is very confusing. The bar around the nicknames, which are not selected, should be removed and remain also at the selected friend in the list.

In addition I still miss the possibility to order my friends in certain categories, which could be created by myself.

As I have lot of PSN nicknames in my friend list I get problems to know for myself, who is the person behind the nickname. Maybe it could be also a solution, if I have the possbility to leave a personal comment for each user in my friend list in order to maintain a better overview in big friend lists.

The comparison of trophies should be also improved. The user should have the possibility to see all games and trophies of each user, but also the possibility to fade out the games, which the the querying user does not have in his game portfolio. This could help to see faster the same games to play probably together…

BlackMage3 9 September, 2009 @ 1:34 pm   492

@ 476

If you can’t understand English then keep your opinions for yourself. If I paid for something and it doesn’t work like it used to or doesn’t give me the functionality I want, then I have a right to complain.
Nobody is going to do something about the current console situation, please don’t state the obvious.
If you actually go and read and UNDERSTAND what I wrote, you’ll see that what I’m saying is that I’m not going to stick with Sony in the next generation unless they change their attitude.
If you want to be an idiot and accept all the nonsense they are talking then go right ahead.
I’m sure you also believe that dualshock is an unnecessary previous generation function and totally overrated.
I encourage you to go and spend lots of your hard earned cash just be told next gen that you can’t use it anymore.

Gengar91 9 September, 2009 @ 1:36 pm   493

I want to play Uncharted!!!! It’s been almost a week since I bought the game, and it STILL hasn’t been fixed! I don’t care about what the XMB looks like, or the sound it makes, when I turn it on – I bought the PS3 to play games on. Aesthetic preferences will always be subjective and thus, yes, there’s no way you can please everyone on that front, but releasing a patch enabling us all to play a game on our GAMING console, is not likely to be met with much opposition. In fact, solving that problem would probably garner universal appraisal.

Fire_Fly_2317 9 September, 2009 @ 1:37 pm   494

Whats happening about the dualshock controller problem, if its not going to be fixed please let me know as i need to arrange a refund and then buy a new controller.

2 replies, and one of thise telling us there will be more replies.

I give up (again)

west1980 9 September, 2009 @ 1:48 pm   496

let us customize xmb they way we want it not you! hey sony you do realise your helping xbox360 sales by letting us down week after week and loosing unhappy customers and they go and buy a xbox360.

Fire_Fly_2317 9 September, 2009 @ 1:49 pm   497

basically what the majority of ps3 users want to see is :-

1. all game issues fixed (freezes etc, these games were fine on the older firmware)

2. fix the faults that stop some dual shock controllers working (some of which are 3rd party, but this shouldn’t be a problem as you could buy controllers from any were in the world and they would work with ps2.)

3. give users the option to turn on the ‘whats new’ section and also the option to disable some of the new features. I for one prefered it when the background colour changed depending on the time of day not a fixed colour as it is now.

Also what might be an idea is to find the most occuring problems and send out a poll to find out which problems need fixing the quickest in the next firmware.

Thanks for listening.

Please bring back the game start chime (or make it optional), you only save like 2 seconds by not having it and you dont seem to realise that its Playstation tradition to have that logo sequence. It sets you up for the game and reminds your using a powerful piece of hardware.

The same goes for the consoles new boot sequence, I really hate the new PS3 slim branding on it (seeing as I own the original PS3) and I also miss the original orchestral score.

You guys make the argument that this console is not longer specifically about gaming which is why you removed the ‘Playstation 3′ game chime but yet the console now boots with PS3 written instead of Sony Computer Entertainment… Thats very hypocritical.

I am glad you are sorting out things like the font size but there is so much other UI stuff people hate about this update like the friends list and the ticker bar. Please just make the whole 3.00 look optional, there was no problem with the 2.80 look.

As for iPlayer I hope you do remove critera 2 because I am a UK resident with a UK PSN but my console is imported.

Thankyou for reading what I have to say. !!! We have to keep copying that link, maybe they’ll notice ;D

Has their been a confirmed issue with 60gb models and 3.0? =/
There seems to be a sudden increase of YLOD. =/

GunstarHeroX 9 September, 2009 @ 1:57 pm   501

Only one reply today? You need to get serious about this Sony, your customers certainly have. We need more information than you have given, half the complaints have not been addressed. You’ve ruined the interface I’ve enjoyed using since March 23rd 2007 and I want it fixed! Nobody asked for these changes. Don’t feel you need to fix things that aren’t broken.

Does the lack of responses mean you are going to wait in silence, hoping this just blows over? Come on! The game startup chime must be returned, the PS Store should not be shoved in our faces everywhere we go (we know how to access it and we know it’s updated on Thursday – that’s all that’s needed!), and all other 3.0 “upgrades” should be made optional or done away with completely. The PS3 is a shadow of it’s former self, and all it took was a single download.

Look at the overall response to 3.0 all over the internet. You’ve upset easily 50% of your customers, if not more. This is an issue that requires immediate action! Please. Thanks.

Englishman 9 September, 2009 @ 2:03 pm   502

I really like 3.0 . I love the sparkles and dynamic themes (I’ve even nabbed my unsername in Japanese to get the Afrika theme). I like that things can still be deselected if you don’t want them – eg I don’t want to boot into What’s New, but I do want to be able to go to it when I want to.
If you look at how the PS3 has improved since launch (Day one, 60Gb BC version) the firmware updates have been immense. Thanks SCEE, now go demand some respect for the EU PS3’ers with your overlords!

Bloody_Marcel 9 September, 2009 @ 2:04 pm   503

@ Vince_The_Biker

I can do voice chat fine just like before. No camera needed.

Skookie30 9 September, 2009 @ 2:10 pm   504

they could fire SCEE for the UTTERNESS to answer & content.

Me mum could do better (sarcasm) 😛

woobieizer 9 September, 2009 @ 2:17 pm   505

3.0 US user manual..see if the shoe fits

Mark. This might make it easier for you to answer more than one question

Overlord.. HA!

Love how this post completely skirted over the issue which most people have objection to – the grey boxes. Sony Diplomacy Robot, activate neutrality mode!

Hey, Mark. This guy has some brilliant ideas could you ask “the powers that be” to fire the current monkeys working on the design for firmware and hire this guy instead?

patate12 9 September, 2009 @ 2:28 pm   509

In firmware 3.1 I whish there would be :

* Filling in the few missing extended latin characters in PS3 font

* The ability to select Vietnamese as spoken language (in PSN profile)

* scrobbling support

marco261 9 September, 2009 @ 2:38 pm   510

the friendslist ist very very ugla, CHANGE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! back to the original

woobieizer 9 September, 2009 @ 2:40 pm   511

You noticed that idea man too.. well they might just take your advice and fire the guy that was working on this as a scapegoat.. cause only a guy that registers his name 8/25/2009 and has one post with such dramatic XMB experience can only be either a mole, or a XMB_super_secret_wiz_kid. SonY!!!!????? pickup the phone…

The ‘what’s new section’ is all about adverts; the very first row that appears isn’t my recent games it is adverts.

An example; today I took inFamous out its box started my PS3 and inserted the disc. After I turned the TV on and the first thing I saw where the two week old adverts for Fat Princess etc. I then tabbed across to the games menu where I got the PSN Store icon and had to tab through that to get to my actual game. So I had to pass through two pieces of advertising to get to my game.

I actually think the idea of PSN Store links to specific parts of the Store is good. But, they should be at the bottom of each menu structure not above the actual content i.e. below the game I’ve already bought and want to play. Even better allow users to select how menus are ordered, or create custom XMB menus.

My problem with 3.0 is that the advertising is very intrusive, in my example your adverting gets in the way of my gaming. The ‘what’s new menu’ doesn’t even allow you to set the period how far back you want the adverts. Hence we’re all still seeing two week old advert, which if anything demonstrates how sparse the EU PSN Store content is. Please tone the adverts down, just a little.

What is the use 500+ comments just 2 replies.. this is really disappointing. :(

stlthriot 9 September, 2009 @ 3:34 pm   518

I am one that likes the “fizz” and you covered the things about the fonts/icon sizes but I have some other things that weren’t covered in the blog post:

– An option to remove that box around the time & info area in the upper right hand side of the screen.

– I like the blur when selecting things but maybe options to tweak it with different levels of blur.

– Random question regarding dynamic themes: I’d love to see one similar to the PS2 clock with all the wicked reflections and refractions, would look awesome as a theme! 😀

Thanks for your support Mr. Bowles and company.

I have a question though. Ever since I’ve bought my first Ps3, one feature I’ve always wished was optional was the ‘beep’ noise once you turn it on. This can be especially annoying if the unit crashes, and I have to listen to it go off 3 more times in succession.

I really like to sometimes play my ps3 late at night, or early in the morning when everyone’s still asleep. But when Uncharted or the internet, etc crashes, these beeps can be really ear piercing when no other noises are goin on.

Can you please make it optional in a new firmware release? I just don’t understand it’s purpose…

Thanks again.

The freezing problem is not only with Uncharted, it is with LBP and some other games as well since the latest update.

Where’s the game start chime gone? Why would you remove it?

It is a reasonable decision, but it should be made optional for the PS3 owners to have that chime or not. I think that makes everyone pleased. =)

Dante_Zero 9 September, 2009 @ 3:38 pm   521

do worry people im still fighting the good fight, i have a feeling we wont get any more responses till they post up thursdays surprise in the hope that it will epease everyone. i know for certain it will not epease me. not till i get a self date for LBP:GOTY or God of War collection. While you at it SCEE how about a date for Demon Souls and White Knight Chronicles???

Mousieboy 9 September, 2009 @ 3:39 pm   522

Hells yeah! Get rid of the on/off crash beeps!

Heshmagray 9 September, 2009 @ 3:42 pm   523

Mark will be replying to more of your responses in the morning.

11 pages of comments and only 2 replies!

hindahouse 9 September, 2009 @ 3:47 pm   524

Unbelievable, Still no REAL replies.

SCEE really do have the worst PR team.

Give us what we want. We pay, you provide. end of.

Really like the new Firmware. Had no problems with recent games ive been playing.

Dynamic Backgrounds is a nice feature, although the default one is not really the best color :) (btw: Why is there still no chance to choose a black background? think the color fits the ps3 so good ^^)

As mentioned the only thing that should be changed are the grey boxes in the friend list. they look… yeah you know, not really good 😉

SpiderMike_X 9 September, 2009 @ 3:49 pm   526

To be honest I like 3.00 and I understand decisions were made to please certain groups, however they should have been released with options to negate the changes for those unaffected by how they layout was before.

On a different note, it should be clear by now that no matter what whoever is in control adds to the FW it isn’t enough so my suggestion is that in future you ask the community what they want, take THAT to the chalk board and put it in. WE’RE the ones that are using it, playing it, living with the system, and not a bunch of suits in an office merely “talking” gaming, so ask US what we want, we’ll give you feedback and then you just toddle off and develop it.

Bish, bash, bosh – everyone is happy for a time.

Its either that, or you throw a bunch of random stuff that merely amounts to window dressing, that nobody really cares for and you then get a torrent of disrespect on the blog and the forums, all saying pretty much the same thing – “We hate it”.

Have a think about it.

amusedpenguin 9 September, 2009 @ 3:58 pm   527

Has anyone else reported game saves being lost or altered following Firmware 3.00. I was rather annoyed by my fairly complete Fallout 3 save reverting to level 1 where I was just leaving the vault. No idea why else this could have happened.

Just thought i’d check.

Back2funk 9 September, 2009 @ 4:05 pm   528

If any of you idiots stopped moaning for one second you might realise that: –

a) 500 people moaning on a forum does not equal over 50% of PS3 users. The vast majority are happy

b) They may have plans for those little grey boxes around the friends list… Whats to say that they are not connected to the premium avatars we are due to get? Maybe they will not always be grey!

c) A missing chime is not the end of the world as we know it…. I would spend less time on worring about the chime and more on getting a life.

sandystrachan 9 September, 2009 @ 4:10 pm   529

I have a uk psn account , i have a uk ps3 still no tv icon or iplayer icon . !!!!!!!!
So that info didnt really help much , more help maybe please . thanks

quarkquest 9 September, 2009 @ 4:18 pm   530

I just wanted to comment on the quote you put that you can not make everyone happy. I fully agree on that. However, you can maximize the happiness of people by being flexible. The wonderful thing about software is you can provide options to choose. For example, give option to users to change the size of fonts, color and so on. Let users to even customize xmb how it displays, for example xmb is place on the top horizontally, you can provide options to set it bottom horizontally or left vertically or right vertically. The BEST solution to make most of the people happy to give them options, possibilities, and customization. This way not only you will improve the experience and usability but also get less complains.
