Many of you have been asking why we haven’t responded to your complaints about last week’s 3.0 update until now. Sorry it’s taken us a while to get back to you – this is obviously an emotive subject and there have been a lot of issues raised surrounding the release, so we wanted to make sure we could come back to you with a comprehensive response that answers your most frequently asked questions.
I don’t like the “Fizz”. How do I turn it off?
To turn the fizz off, go to the Theme Settings under Settings on the XMB, you can choose different themes from here. “Classic” is the default theme without the fizz.
Where’s the game start chime gone? Why would you remove it?
One of the reasons we removed the PS3 jingle is that it was created to indicate the start of a game, but now we’re offering non-game content such as Vidzone in addition to games. More importantly though, this change makes the loading time a bit quicker than before, which we think will be a noticeable benefit for all game users.
The BBC iPlayer icon hasn’t appeared on the XMB. How can I get it?
There are 2 criteria for the presence of the iPlayer icon on the XMB:
(1) A PSN account or guest account as a UK resident
(2) A PS3 console sold in the UK. If you don’t have either of them, the icon will not show up. You can access the BBC iPlayer without the icon, by using the PS3 browser. The quickest way to get around it, is to type “iplayer” in the Google search shortcut on the XMB and click “iplayer” from the search result. You will be redirected to the PS3 special site of iPlayer, where you can then press “Select” to add to your bookmark.
For a better experience in the future, we are looking at the possibility of removing point (2). However (1) is required to identify your country of residence.
I don’t like the size of the font and the icons. Why can’t I change it back to its old size?
Based on your feedback, we are looking at the possibility of making the changes optional.
The US and Japan have a few Dynamic Themes available already. Where are ours?
The Dynamic Themes were supplied to all three regions at the same time, but unfortunately, due to the complexities of the PAL region’s PlayStation Store publishing process, they missed our publishing window last week. (Remember, we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages, so it’s more difficult for us to publish last minute content than it is for either the US or Japan). We can confirm that some Dynamic Themes will be made available on the EU Store this week, and we have a little surprise prepared especially for our PAL readers that we hope you’ll agree is worth the wait!
I used to be able to surf the net and listen to music simultaneously. Now I can’t. Why?
The PS3 extended the upsampling capability to audio tracks stored on HDD and storage media with v3.00. Some function on the XMB such as the internet browser and photo gallery outputs with 48KHz only so you need to set audio outputs as 48Khz to enjoy music and net surfing.
The first thing I see when I turn my PS3 on is adverts. What does this offer me?
It’s not just about adverts — the primary role of the “What’s New” screen is to get you into the game more quickly. You’ll be able to jump straight into the last three games or applications that you’ve been using. It’s basically acts as a short-cut to the games that are resident on the HDD, so that they can be automatically booted up rather than having to go via the game selection icons on the XMB. In addition, “What’s New” will give you a chance to discover some of the best deals on offer, read about the hottest stories currently making news across the web or even give you a heads up about some exclusive content our own EU Blog. We’re planning to improve “What’s New” in the future with some exciting content and customisation, so we eagerly await your feedback and ideas.
Uncharted freezes ever since 3.00 was released. Is there a fix coming soon?
We’re aware of the problem with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune following the latest system software update and have a team working hard to isolate the issue. We’ll update further information here on the blog, as and when we get it. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.
–
Well guys, I hope that’s helped answer some of your questions. Thanks to all those of you who have provided positive feedback on 3.0.
As a wise person once said, “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time” — We love hearing everyone’s opinion so keep the comments coming!

Hello to the lads on over in Europe, since you seem more involved in listening and responding to the masses, I would like to relay to you what I took the time to redact and post on the US boards.:
Site referenced:
http://web.me.com/steven.shaw/PlayStation_3_XMB/PlayStati on_3_XMB.html
The following is a summary and very sound advice as to what you should do HONESTLY
Dear SONY
Here we are spoon feeding you EXACTLY what you need to do to make your system competitive… yes you dropped your prices, yes you have exclusives (so do the other guys) and yes you have a BR player in your gaming console… lets forget the pros and cons of those because truth be told I still use the 360 more for gaming (Hint buy one and see what the competition does better)
Now here is a COMPREHENSIVE list of items to be reverted/updated
1. Friends list: take off the gray boxes
*look at this guy’s design which is much more functional and much smoother than your whole design team could come up with over time:

1-1. On that same page you will notice that the prototype designer took off the annoying scrolling “News” (which is honestly only news thursday) which is incredibly distracting because while I’m doing something else and something pops in the top right corner I’m expecting a friend logging in or an incoming message (take that scrolling message off PLEASE just do it permanently NOBODY wants that)
3. Intro Screen: Black and glossy is slick and sexy while purple and sparkly is more childish and girly.
4. The chime: the little game jingle was a very nice touch signature of PS3, now, well you just get into the game (i liked it and already miss it) the 1/2 second lost actually builds on the suspense, trust me it really does! It’s much like the wife’s honey I’m home if you know what I mean. It’s the moment you tell yourself FINALLY IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN

2. Store icons: Take the new ones off they just make you look desperate for traffic. Give the classic shop location the functionality of the new ones in the way of the What’s New icon
*I will now refer to that guy’s prototype once more to point out the second page where he makes note on how to make the shop more appealing. Really since you update only on Thursdays most of this is basically useless anyways. The regulars make their rounds on Thursday in both Home and the store and that’s it until next week! We don’t want to hear more about it so just take it off the game and movie section
2-1. What’s NEW: You can keep that in the network section it’s OK it’s actually pretty neat and adds an extra little bit of functionality
5- Take example from the Xbox’s chat features and “party system” and in-game personal music and try to implement those in your system they will give you one less reason for me to prefer playing my games on the 360

DESIGN TIP: regarding the new style I’d have to say that roughly everything about the PS3 Slim wreaks CHEAPNESS. The old glossy finish of the hardware was sexy VS the NEW unpolished gray look. The slimmer look doesn’t give it any advantage really as long as it has the oval shape (the ps3 will still have to be on top of the pile or stand apart but now it looks like a toy unlike the FAT which looked like an artistic item amidst all the other machinery.
One more thing disabling the what’s new section from the syste does NOT disable the useless, annoying and aggravating scroll-bar.
Thanks for acknowledging that we believe that you can move forward while you show us the contrary in degrading the quality of your offerings.
Sincerely,
ME

Kenziedaddy the psn updates are usually around 17.00 uk time. But the update just before and after firmware 3.00 for some reason both had the updates around 20.00-22.00 uk time.
Go figure even the psn update gets punished by the new firmware

@kenziedaddy : the day has only started , it could arrive at ANY time today ie until midnight . Chances are the store should be updated before 5pm , shut up and keep trying you might get it . Moaning here wont make it come faster , its like watching paint dry .

i want the ticker to work as long as it puts relevant information on there on a regular basis or alternatively turn the ticker into a customisable RSS feed that people can use. at least then it would give extra functionality to it. I would luv to put my own RSS feeds on the ticker. would save me checking websites and give me more gaming time.

@ Dante_Zero
yes I totally agree..

@667
The ticker needs to be the main information section IMO, it should display ALL the popup info be it “XXXX has come online/gone offline”, “the controller needs charging etc”, you’ve recieved a message”, signed in/out” etc.
It should even put all battery levels and all other things like that in it, for example make the 2nd clock a power icon (the cirlce with 4 coloured lines in it or something) when you hit the PS button, this needs to be done so everything is in that section to make it more focused and so it’s an actual information section.
It’s very sloppy at the moment in that we have this section YET nearly all info pops up in the same old boxes as befor and cover it up, things like this show 3.0 was rushed out for the slim launch instead of actully being finished and released when it was ready.

by the way thanks for the reply to the thread. i appreciated that you do try to read all the comments but it takes me like ten minutes to read throught the pages. thanks for the free themes though and Kudos to you for providing them but please dont think that a few free themes will apease everyone. there are genuine concerns regarding the regular store update and thing not working. please take my ticker idea on board. also we need a fix for whats new as it didnt tell me the last game i played( arkum asylum) and as a result has kind of made itself redundant in the fact i have to come out of it and scroll to game and select the disc.

why can’t we have bluetooth stereo headsets enabled to listen music, play games etc. without disturbing other people. There are thousands of bluetooth stereo headsets in the market, Sony just needs to implement A2DP protocol…

as i say kudo’s for the free themes but at the end of the day all companys providing services/products want money. I want to spend money with you. more money to SCEE would allow more funding through the departments leading to me spending more money on games/ssoftware/hardware.
Im beging for you to release more PS1 classics such as the RE series, MGS is a must. you all saw the results of sales for FF7. also please make a beta scheme simular to Qore on the store to make it fairer for gaining access to beta’s and can we please have some more info regarding why God of War collection/LBP:GOTY/DEMON SOULS
are not being released into europe or at least not for a very long time. If you are not sure how these games would appeal to PAL audience then please tell me how many signatures i would need on a petition to get these games released earlier or released at all.
i promise you give me a number and i’ll get it for you. see you all after the update. lets hope i dont have to die a little inside again. lol

Free theme =
.
Mark mate, can you pass on info about the icon load up times please for the whats new section and extra store icons, i’ve heard nothing on it from Sony anywere, the new icons load there info instantly BUT every other icon takes a second or 2 (so you have time to scroll past them).
It is a minor issue i know BUT it now bothers me more than the jaggy big icons now as they always popup even when your just scrolling past them, all the icons should fade up at the same rate IMO.
Thankies.

How about background download content on everything.
It’s very fustrating having to sit their for up to an hour to download something. While there is a certain competitor of yours that implemented this from the start.
Sony, your really dropping the ball this gen.

also just an idea like but instead of getting rid of the friend boxes merge them with the online trophy cards that you see when you log into the main plainstation website. you wouldnt have to worry about adding customisation of the trophy cars because people would just do that online anyway.

Yes Dante_Zero, the free Wipeout theme is a dynamic theme

So by way of a thank you to us (as you aren’t even gracious enough to actually apologise) we will recieve a free Wipeout HD dynamic theme?
So you are thanking us by allowing us to advertise your game on our consoles?
I don’t even care about the theme.
The fact remains that all your stuff on the store and in Home is ridiculously over priced and 3 years in we have no cross game chat, a handful of titles (if that) which allow custom soundtracks, no games I can think of that support screenshots, way behind every other region for content, Home is a joke and a PR department that has no idea who it’s customers are or what they want.
Every, and I mean every step Sony have made with the PS3 turns out be another mind boggling fiasco and I am sick of it.
Posted on 10 September, 2009 at 2:36 pm by Mark Bowles
Hi ProphetofRage, I see you have a very fitting name;-) Sorry to hear you won’t be downloading the Wipeout theme. Thanks for your comment though, as I say we appreciate all feedback – positive and negative.

I am seriously flabberghasted at the completely over the top reaction to 3.0 and the “assault” on Sony that has followed.
The only issue with 3.0 that is a genuine problem and needs fixing is any conflict with exsiting software – eg Uncharted. Personally I’ve had no problem with running Uncharted alongside 3.0, but if there is an issue, it must be fixed.
I quite like 3.0, but I know that further choice in customization could only benefit things. If Sony give people the choice to change settings then I would hope that the many detractors would calm down a little.
The one thing I would like to see in further firmware updates is additional music player visualizations. If you can provide those, i’d be particularly grateful.
Cheers

One question. I’m not sure if you actually do this already, but do you have a beta testing program with “real” members on the PSN? If not, perhaps this is a direction you can go in to better gauge public reaction.

Studio Liverpool for the rescue, eh? Those guys are amazing, I’ll give that to SCEE. Wipeout HD is one of the few games that really push PS3 and utilizes its features. Now we’re given a free dynamic theme from them, eh? I can already see all those US guys making European accounts just for it, lol.
Anyway, Mr. Bowles – please understand that this update didn’t work out. I can’t stress this hard enough. Stop thinking that only the friends list was destroyed. It won’t end well if fails of 3.0 will remain. I’m guessing some hermetic Japanese team is behind the updates and it’s hard to communicate with them since they live in their own world but really, this can’t be taken lightly. 3.0 must fixed from top to bottom – a few patches won’t make us happy.

Since you’re talking about 3.00 (unlike the US blog which is now as crappy as the Sixth Axis/Major Nelson for shrilling products instead of blogging about Playstation…):
What would improve 3.00:
-Font change for people unhappy about fonts.
-Remove ticker under the info bar that came with 3.00 that you… get this… CAN’T TURN OFF. CAN’T TURN OFF. CAN’T TURN OFF. No, I don’t give a crap about the RSS feed and no, I don’t want it. Sony said it would be able to be turned off (just like the “Whats New” tab was able to be turned off when it was a simple RSS feed before this update)
-Friend List box color change ability/make transparent like pre-3.0 (!!IMPORTANT!!)
-Font color change so certain themes look better/XMB is readable on certain fonts (!!IMPORTANT!!)
-Removable PSN store icons so it’s just in my PSN XMB tab like before
-Custom PSN store icon for the theme creator

No matter what people say, I think it’s great that you actually read all comment and respond to some, as I don’t think many companies would do that, i.e Microsoft.
698
Posted on 10 September, 2009 at 2:18 pm by Sekoku
While I’m at it:
-Dynamic Customer Theme creator (that isn’t copywrited/SDK-required). It can’t be hard to let customers make custom .gifs for backgrounds that aren’t ZOMG 3D POLYGONS! like the Afrika theme. But hell, letting users that know how to do 3D themes that move should be given the option. Custom themes kicked 2D non-moving pay-for themes asses when that option came out. Which is why I guess Sony doesn’t want to give it to us.
-Subtitles in PSN store downloads (like Pulse) (!!IMPORTANT!!)
-Qore to give Free yearly give-me stuff at least a year in advance so you aren’t paying for a $22 mystery bag of stuff that you may already have a copy of and since Qore isn’t subbed is pretty useless for your deaf ass.
Come on, Sony. Can you think a little when you brainstorm stuff?
At least the EU blog acknowledges the freezes of Uncharted (but other games have glitches/problems as well, what the hell?) along with peoples dissatisfaction with the 3.00 update.

i had a thought while i was out today.
these changes you made to the xmb, the larger icons and the grey boxes around the friends list.
makes me think you’re trying to change the ps3 into the wii, if so, please don’t.
i don’t mean literally change it into a wii, i mean make it more like the wii.
if i wanted something like a wii, i’d have bought a wii.
