Many of you have been asking why we haven’t responded to your complaints about last week’s 3.0 update until now. Sorry it’s taken us a while to get back to you – this is obviously an emotive subject and there have been a lot of issues raised surrounding the release, so we wanted to make sure we could come back to you with a comprehensive response that answers your most frequently asked questions.
I don’t like the “Fizz”. How do I turn it off?
To turn the fizz off, go to the Theme Settings under Settings on the XMB, you can choose different themes from here. “Classic” is the default theme without the fizz.
Where’s the game start chime gone? Why would you remove it?
One of the reasons we removed the PS3 jingle is that it was created to indicate the start of a game, but now we’re offering non-game content such as Vidzone in addition to games. More importantly though, this change makes the loading time a bit quicker than before, which we think will be a noticeable benefit for all game users.
The BBC iPlayer icon hasn’t appeared on the XMB. How can I get it?
There are 2 criteria for the presence of the iPlayer icon on the XMB:
(1) A PSN account or guest account as a UK resident
(2) A PS3 console sold in the UK. If you don’t have either of them, the icon will not show up. You can access the BBC iPlayer without the icon, by using the PS3 browser. The quickest way to get around it, is to type “iplayer” in the Google search shortcut on the XMB and click “iplayer” from the search result. You will be redirected to the PS3 special site of iPlayer, where you can then press “Select” to add to your bookmark.
For a better experience in the future, we are looking at the possibility of removing point (2). However (1) is required to identify your country of residence.
I don’t like the size of the font and the icons. Why can’t I change it back to its old size?
Based on your feedback, we are looking at the possibility of making the changes optional.
The US and Japan have a few Dynamic Themes available already. Where are ours?
The Dynamic Themes were supplied to all three regions at the same time, but unfortunately, due to the complexities of the PAL region’s PlayStation Store publishing process, they missed our publishing window last week. (Remember, we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages, so it’s more difficult for us to publish last minute content than it is for either the US or Japan). We can confirm that some Dynamic Themes will be made available on the EU Store this week, and we have a little surprise prepared especially for our PAL readers that we hope you’ll agree is worth the wait!
I used to be able to surf the net and listen to music simultaneously. Now I can’t. Why?
The PS3 extended the upsampling capability to audio tracks stored on HDD and storage media with v3.00. Some function on the XMB such as the internet browser and photo gallery outputs with 48KHz only so you need to set audio outputs as 48Khz to enjoy music and net surfing.
The first thing I see when I turn my PS3 on is adverts. What does this offer me?
It’s not just about adverts — the primary role of the “What’s New” screen is to get you into the game more quickly. You’ll be able to jump straight into the last three games or applications that you’ve been using. It’s basically acts as a short-cut to the games that are resident on the HDD, so that they can be automatically booted up rather than having to go via the game selection icons on the XMB. In addition, “What’s New” will give you a chance to discover some of the best deals on offer, read about the hottest stories currently making news across the web or even give you a heads up about some exclusive content our own EU Blog. We’re planning to improve “What’s New” in the future with some exciting content and customisation, so we eagerly await your feedback and ideas.
Uncharted freezes ever since 3.00 was released. Is there a fix coming soon?
We’re aware of the problem with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune following the latest system software update and have a team working hard to isolate the issue. We’ll update further information here on the blog, as and when we get it. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.
–
Well guys, I hope that’s helped answer some of your questions. Thanks to all those of you who have provided positive feedback on 3.0.
As a wise person once said, “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time” — We love hearing everyone’s opinion so keep the comments coming!

Can we have better file/folder management options at some point too, for example;
You should be able to select a video/song and be able to select a pre-existing folder that you created to drop it into, instead of having to type out the name of the folder you want to move it to for each file.
The same for multiple videos/songs, select the ones you want to move to a pre-existing folder and batch move instead of one at a time. OR if the folder doesn’t exist, select multiple and be able to create the folder so that all selected files will automatically go into it.
And finally, if a video/audio file is being copied from a usb drive or via media server, give the option to select the folder the file will go in beforehand, so that it copies straight into it, instead of creating its own folder which you then have to change yourself after the copy.
User created sub folders would be nice too!

Massive fonts have to be changed. They look horrible now. Glad to see that Sony are actually listening to people though!

They aren’t listening. 16 pages of posts and only 6 replies, compare it with any other thread and you will see this one is clearly being ignored. They don’t give a toss what we want, they don’t care that almost everyone hates what they’ve done with the system. I want PS Store “shortcuts” removed, I want the friends list fixed, and I want my game startup chime dammit!!!
Come on Sony, STOP IGNORING US. Rather than try to fix individual things, lets just make it easy and say WE WANT ALL 3.0 CHANGES UNDONE.

“It’s not just about adverts — the primary role of the “What’s New” screen is to get you into the game more quickly. You’ll be able to jump straight into the last three games or applications that you’ve been using.”
Or alternatively you could have left it so that the playstation just loaded the disk that was in the tray like it used to do. How can this now be a quicker process like you are saying? It loads up this “whats new” screen, has to wait while it conects to PSN and then come up with the games that you last played. Meanwhile if I hadn’t updated my firmware i’d already be playing my game at this point.
I don’t need to know that super smash tanks is now available for download every friking time I boot up my console. Its anoying and pointless.
Please also take the Playstation Store Icon out of the Games list. Whats the point in having 2 of the same thing??
As far as the friends list goes I recomend taking a look at post 700 and his video. That is one great idea for the friends list.

For those of you on here who have the same problem as me (a PS3 since the update which is only any use as a book-end – doesn’t read any DVD / blue ray / game) I thought I’d mention the following
Watchdog are doing an article next week on Playstations, and although they didn’t say specifically what, I think it’s something to do with the cost of their repairs. I’m hoping they’re going to incorporate this issue too and have sent them a long e-mail detailing our problems and Sony’s unhelpful reaction to it. It would support the case if as many people as have had “isolated problems” with the 3.00 firmware update also get in touch BEFORE GOING OUT AND BUYING A NEW PS3 AND MAKING SONY RICHER!!!!!!!
This is the link – you don’t need to long in or anything:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/gotastory/
Come on – let’s get this sorted out!!!
If, in the meantime, I get any response from Watchdog, I’ll post on here what they have to say.

I dont get it people. Alot of people seem to be asking for Cross game chat and custom soundtracks for all games. This i about firmware 3.00. none of these features were slated for this firmware release.
Also someone said that (in Jest) that they think the SCEE is trying to turn the PS3 into a Wii. but it seems to me like most people want to turn it into an Xbox360.
They are different systems people. Just because one does something dont expect all to do the same.

Any chance, in the next firmware update, that there is an option to back up all game saves in one go? Backing up Grid is rediculous. It has about 60 + saves of different things…

Thank you for the chance to speak our minds. I play on a 65 inch TV and the font size is a major issue for me. It is so large that it is a strain on the eyes to look over some items – I would really like to have some control over the font size (even if it is small, med. and large).
I do really miss the previous ‘spiderman font’ and game start chime – but I realize that those are broad changes that are here to stay, so OK. (it is a real shame that my catalog of 55 disc games for PS3 will look odd on the shelf with different spine designs, but again – OK).
You mention looking into the friends list changes – I like the way it stands out from the background so it can be read more easily, although I never really had a problem.
Finally – I would like the option to choose a different font color – many themes and backgrounds make the white text totally unreadable.
Thank you again for the chance to add my 2 cents.
Keep up the GREAT work – I LOVE the PS3,I’ve had my 60GB since launch and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Firmware 3.00 has been a disaster for Sony.
From a PR standpoint, how such an organisation can ignore customers for such a length of time is staggering, especially so given that representatives of SCEE are actively replying to other posts (which I deem to be less important) on a daily basis.
My confidence in Sony has taken a big hit since the release of 3.00 and the subsequent mess.
767
Posted on 11 September, 2009 at 4:44 pm by Laurie47
The blog post states that Sony are aware of the issues and are working on fixing them.
To suggest that we are being ignored is very short sighted.
I think you can safely assume that Sony are still working hard on fixing the firmware without them having to post here saying ‘we are still working on it’
It will be ready when it is working and finished and no amount of complaining will make it happen any quicker.
I too am disappointed as a lot of people are as I have only just bought my slim and Uncharted and would love to be able to play it.
I will not however be posting rants on here asking Sony to do something about it when they have already stated that they are working on the solution.
What do you people want?
Be patient.

People would be much happier if a Sony rep would take three seconds and post a quick “we’re still working on it today”. They could have avoided this entire backlash.
Might I add that the length of time they have left this without a patch or even a progress update is outrageous. I hope Watchdog pick up on this on Thursday.

Yes it is becoming clear that this Blog, like Firmware 3.0, is all about advertising. Not about having your say or getting any useful information from Sony. Only 6 replies to what is obviously a major issue. I guarantee that if they were trying to sell us Singstore crap or something with this post, there would be tons of replies. But no, this post is concerning something important, something the community would really like some information on, so not a word is said.

Thanks for taking the time to reply but…
What about the controller issue? Can you say SOMETHING about it? I mean… it was intentional to leave all those people who were victims of a scam out of the system? It’s true, seems that the controllers from Hong Kong have a really poor quality. But is this problem a bug or is it on purpose?
There are 30 pages of people complaining about this in the forums. Can you please explain the situation? All we ask is an explanation. I someone going to fix it? or not? Is not that hard to give us some feedback about real problems.

Please stop shoving the PSN store down my throat. I buy enough stuff off of it that I shouldn’t have to put up with you spamming the icon at me. Let me customize that big-icon thing and put what ‘I’ want to go there, not what you want to go there.
The friend list sucks.

When will we get new firmware that at the very least fix all the things that 3.0 has broken? WHEN?
This is not fair play! I want to use my PS3 as before, this is a great shame.
Dualshock isn’t working, most of the games crashes or freeze.
Do something Sony, better yesterday than tomorrow, PLEASE.

Sony i have a complaint. I have a copy of sturmovik birds of prey. Everytime i play the game the whole console freezes up after the second level.
Ive tried it in my brothers PS3 and it plays fine. This is my 3rd PS3 in two years and now im worried that my playstation 3 is at fault.
If i cant play this game on my PS3 then i want to send it off to be refunded. I will only know if its specifically my PS3 or a firmware bug when you finally get around to updating the firmware.
I have a limited amount of time to send the game back before its too late and possibly i will be stuck with a game that doesnt work because i have yet another faulty PS3.
Please sort it out SONY

Hi.
I use a external harddrive for my music folders since the PS3 manages my files in a way that I dont like.
With FW 2.80 this worked really well and with FW 3.0 really bad.
Takes FOREVER for the PS3 to spot all files…

To be perfectly honest the only disappointment I found was the lack of a new music visualisation (sure the ‘wavy line’ vis gets the XMB’s sparkles, but is hardly a substitute for an entirely new one), the PS3 has only three of them whereas the PSP has…. at least ten(?).

Please give back the old friends list or at least give us to option to make those ugly grey boxes transparent or remove them entirely.

First of all i would like to say thank you **MARK** for replying to all of these posts.
secondly (directed towards all the people posting). He is only 1 man he cannot reply to every single post, he will browse the posts every day or so and take not of re-occurring issues then make a post on their stance to the issue. so if you don’t receive a post every 5 minutes don’t think your getting the cold shoulder.
thirdly (towards **MARK**) i know there are issues with FW 3.0 i to have been suffering from these which i will mention later. but on the whole i like 3.0 although the new way games start is a bit weird it seems as though something is missing in that 2 seconds blank screen, you could consider in the future to fill it with some sort of advertisement.
Last of all just wanted to mention that out of all the game bugs, XMB dislikes the problem that affects me most is my 3rd party controller as i like to play coop but at the minute im snookered, if you could maybe address this it would be much appreciated, i can wait for the game fixes but not the controller. excuse me but i need to do some hard core killing on resistance 2.
Thanks again Mark

I own a 80GB PS3 (old design).
My Wipeout HD Fury freezes every now and then ever since I installed FW 3.00 It maked this precision-heavy game unplayable! It seems like the PS3 is working on some background tasks, that force the foreground game to stall momentarily…
Also, rendering in Flower has become choppier, less fluent. Again, it seems like the console is busy with other things..
Is it just me, or have you been using your PS3 LESS since FW 3.00????
I really hope that SONY finds both a satisfying and clever solution in the very, very near future!

My PS3 hasn’t been so enjoyable since FW 3.00.
Dont get me wrong, I love the FW but now when I play games My (replacement) 80GB PS3 freezes. It’ll just lock up sometimes when loading a level. The only way I can shut my PS3 down is via the switch on the back.
I’ve encountered this problem with both Mirrors Edge and Resistance 2. And frankly its really hindering my enjyment of the cosole.
Please tell me you guys are working on the problem.

Using it less? C’mon now, that is ubsurd.
I’ m using my PS3 for almost anything now. The web browser has realy come a long way (all i need now is an encoding tool embedded in the xmb!)
I haven’t expierenced any freezes (60gb), but they said they would fix the bugs anyway.
The whole thing with the updates is a proccess guys. A work in progress. You think it will stay the same for another 5 years? Have some trust.

Stop complaining guys, the firmware is actually very good there are some things that i don’t like but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that sony gave us a very good product and the Psn Friend’s list looks a thousand times better now, especially if you have lots of Psn Friend’s .

Nice to hear that you don`t have problems with FW 3.0
But we do have them!
I cannot enjoy the FW cause Uncharted greezes every 5 minutes.
This FW is definitely no good products.
And in my opinion taking more than one and a half week for fixing fw bugs like the Uncharted bug and not answering to this topic for 3 days is a shame!

It does seem like bad timing to release the firmware at the same time as the new slim PS3. It could well hurt future sales as the word spreads of these issues. Its hard to see how they did not get picked up during testing of the new firmware.
I have yet to play a game on my new PS3 due to this issue.
I do feel that everything that can be done to fix it is being done.
Why they don’t feel the need to keep us informed I don’t know.
And I think its a fair point to ask for an update on progress.
