Many of you have been asking why we haven’t responded to your complaints about last week’s 3.0 update until now. Sorry it’s taken us a while to get back to you – this is obviously an emotive subject and there have been a lot of issues raised surrounding the release, so we wanted to make sure we could come back to you with a comprehensive response that answers your most frequently asked questions.
I don’t like the “Fizz”. How do I turn it off?
To turn the fizz off, go to the Theme Settings under Settings on the XMB, you can choose different themes from here. “Classic” is the default theme without the fizz.
Where’s the game start chime gone? Why would you remove it?
One of the reasons we removed the PS3 jingle is that it was created to indicate the start of a game, but now we’re offering non-game content such as Vidzone in addition to games. More importantly though, this change makes the loading time a bit quicker than before, which we think will be a noticeable benefit for all game users.
The BBC iPlayer icon hasn’t appeared on the XMB. How can I get it?
There are 2 criteria for the presence of the iPlayer icon on the XMB:
(1) A PSN account or guest account as a UK resident
(2) A PS3 console sold in the UK. If you don’t have either of them, the icon will not show up. You can access the BBC iPlayer without the icon, by using the PS3 browser. The quickest way to get around it, is to type “iplayer” in the Google search shortcut on the XMB and click “iplayer” from the search result. You will be redirected to the PS3 special site of iPlayer, where you can then press “Select” to add to your bookmark.
For a better experience in the future, we are looking at the possibility of removing point (2). However (1) is required to identify your country of residence.
I don’t like the size of the font and the icons. Why can’t I change it back to its old size?
Based on your feedback, we are looking at the possibility of making the changes optional.
The US and Japan have a few Dynamic Themes available already. Where are ours?
The Dynamic Themes were supplied to all three regions at the same time, but unfortunately, due to the complexities of the PAL region’s PlayStation Store publishing process, they missed our publishing window last week. (Remember, we have 29 stores across 25 countries, which require the use of 13 currencies and 8 languages, so it’s more difficult for us to publish last minute content than it is for either the US or Japan). We can confirm that some Dynamic Themes will be made available on the EU Store this week, and we have a little surprise prepared especially for our PAL readers that we hope you’ll agree is worth the wait!
I used to be able to surf the net and listen to music simultaneously. Now I can’t. Why?
The PS3 extended the upsampling capability to audio tracks stored on HDD and storage media with v3.00. Some function on the XMB such as the internet browser and photo gallery outputs with 48KHz only so you need to set audio outputs as 48Khz to enjoy music and net surfing.
The first thing I see when I turn my PS3 on is adverts. What does this offer me?
It’s not just about adverts — the primary role of the “What’s New” screen is to get you into the game more quickly. You’ll be able to jump straight into the last three games or applications that you’ve been using. It’s basically acts as a short-cut to the games that are resident on the HDD, so that they can be automatically booted up rather than having to go via the game selection icons on the XMB. In addition, “What’s New” will give you a chance to discover some of the best deals on offer, read about the hottest stories currently making news across the web or even give you a heads up about some exclusive content our own EU Blog. We’re planning to improve “What’s New” in the future with some exciting content and customisation, so we eagerly await your feedback and ideas.
Uncharted freezes ever since 3.00 was released. Is there a fix coming soon?
We’re aware of the problem with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune following the latest system software update and have a team working hard to isolate the issue. We’ll update further information here on the blog, as and when we get it. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.
–
Well guys, I hope that’s helped answer some of your questions. Thanks to all those of you who have provided positive feedback on 3.0.

Uncharted freezes? I’ve been playing it a fair bit since updating the firmware and haven’t had even one problem with it. So it doesn’t affect all PS3′s then?
Most of the firmware changes haven’t bothered me much and I like having the lil info at the top showing how many people online and if I got a pm since I turned off the notification thing cos it was always annoying me during a game or movie or something.
There is one thing though. The way that all items in the list not the currently ‘chosen’ one disappear after a few seconds. That’s really irritating for me, especially when I was trying to check play length times on videos and music files in the lists and I had to keep flicking up and down to keep the list ‘fresh’ so it wouldn’t fade.

First of all thanx for sharing som more light. But for some reason i dont think this explained all the stuff that was talked about the store last week? Some ex: Are you going to hurry up process to have avaliable products on each store at the same time or more demos, trial demo before buy etc?
Remember EU have a large community for Sony. So please show us that you support us in the same way you have done with others.

Thank you for interacting and communicating with the user community. That is truly a great way to handle “grass roots” public relations. It is great to see that SCEE does listen and react to user input

I’m posting this here because the Contact Us form is buggy (says “Image verification was incorrect. Please try again.” despite it being correct- Tried multiple times reloading the image).
Anyway, this is the message I’m trying to send you:
Hello there,
I just wanted to let you know that since the day the PS3 was released in Europe, the Italian version of the PlayStation Store displays the wrong procedure relative to how you are supposed to install a PS3 Theme.
Here is a picture of it.
http://i27.tinypic.com/fbg5s.jpg
It basically states the following:
1) Select Game icon from PS3 Home menu.
2) Highlight this theme and select it by pressing X
3) Push the Triangle button to access the Options menu
4) Select “Set as theme” and follow onscreen instructions to finalize the configuration.
As you can see, this is incorrect and it has been like this since forever!
Can you fix it? Thanks

@41
I’m also another refurb 60gb with an 04 serial number. Point 2 on the BBC iPlayer comment is the clincher.
Looking on the forums it seems that there a few refurbs AND people who’ve been sold a 04 PS3 in the UK.

Thank you for all of that information.
You were direct, open and honest.
Im glad you mentioned some of the hurdles you face compared to the U.S and Japan store in terms of getting things released.
Hopefully this will get a few people of your backs.
Keep up the good work guys.

Just to add to my existing post
The presence of a TV icon isn’t a clincher NOW, but it bodes badly for UK PS3 owners if future UK exclusive features can be held back through no fault of our own…..

Thanks for the update. It’s good to have an official response.
As regards the firmware – I generally thought it was pretty good.
I absolutely love the sparkles – they look so nice at the moment, late at night, with the purple and black (currently).
The only things I found a little frustrating was the lack of dynamic themes (which you are fixing this week – so thanks for that) and I think the numerous links to the store (currently two in the EU but 3 soon, presumably) is a little over-the-top.
But generally speaking, a really nice aesthetic update.
So thanks once again, SCEE.
Now all we need is some great new spaces on Home announced for this week (Namco, Siren, Ghostbusters maybe) and I will be very happy.

FW3.0 has grown on me over the past week, allthough the option to turn the fonts back would be very welcome
The one thing i still want though is the option to hide the PS Store icon under Game, it just doesn’t have to be there because there is another icon 2 clicks away!
I would also like it if when the video store becomes available, it isn’t just a PS Store icon, it is something different and more specific, such as a video store icon.
Thanks for the Q&A!

Can’t believe that this took a week to compile.
With regards to the Whats New:
“We’re planning to improve “What’s New” in the future with some exciting content and customisation, so we eagerly await your feedback and ideas.”
Why did SCEE not implement these from the get-go? You knew it was coming. Same with the PSN store bits getting pushed back each and every time. You can’t give out the same excuse time and time again.
I have a feeling that SCEE is trying to keep up with the rest of the SCE divisions but can’t; When is SCEE going to step it’s game up?
I dont like my last couple of posts on the blog here, they’re all very negativly tinted but I’m just getting fed up with the service you give your customers. Thanks.

I’ve noticed small freezes in Ferrari Challenge also, only lasts 1-2 seconds.
The boxes on the friendslist – they’re not that beutifull
The icons and fonts should be made smaller or at least make then customizeable so we can choose our own size.
The popup telling you that a friend has come online ot a message has been recieved – please make it smaller or making it more transparant.

Alot of unanswered questions. The real question isn’t really about why, it’s what you going to do to fix it?. Are you going to fix it?. I think we all know why you took away the chime but the problem is most never asked you to. I can get into a game two seconds quicker, big deal.

“The BBC iPlayer icon hasn’t appeared on the XMB. How can I get it?”
Right, as explained loads of times, peope who don’t have the icon have EU consoles supplyed by sony via replacement, it’s kinda stupid that your possibly removing options 2 as YOU NEED TO!, you have UK customers without an advertised feature and we don’t have it on our XMB because YOU didn’t send us back UK consoles. Don’t possibly remove the featue just remove it so we can access it via the XMB just like you’ve advertised.
—
Also as others have said, you’ve once again ignored the most complained about things and just answered with “maybes”, tell us for a fact you are fixing things that have been complained about please.
—
Also. i find it kind of insulting you say “Thanks to all those of you who have provided positive feedback on 3.0.”, so people who supply negative feedback about 3.0 get no thanks?.

I’m satisfied with these answers. But I hope that dynamic themes are priced appropriately, anything above £2 and I won’t be buying any.

Thanks for the update I look forward to getting some good themes this week.
One thing about the BBC iplayer is that it should be in Ireland as well. The RTE player would not be as much use for me as I watch less than 5 hours of RTE a week and some of my favourite shows are on BBC.
They broadcast all their shows here as well so I don’t see the point of not letting us use it.

Well it looks like Sony has turned into nintendo, They haven’t listened. I want the spiderman font back as well as the jingle, i dont care if there is a split second loading time faster, at least give us the choice. This is the same with the Playstation Store on the game, and soon to be video, there is NO need, only an idiot would not go on the playstation store regularly.
Next time, dont get the marketing team involved with the update

“As a wise person once said, “You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time”
It must be pretty hard to pee off almost everybody the majority of the time then.

@73, be quiet about that, that’s the one bonus we have over the US and jap sections, they are forced to see it all the time and have no option to turn it off, we at least dopn’t have it at all atm.
Plus the only info scrolled is the same exact info that’s in the whats new section.

Hi thank you for this post, it is a start
I for one like the update but not the friends list!
But can you explain what the language got to do with the delay of content like themes?
For other content Why not release it in English for people that do not want it in their own language, with an setting in the store or maybe you could do checks like iplayer on language settings of the ps3 and present the US. store updates to everbody with the language set to English..

I would just like to say thank you for this post, and also I think the changes in 3.0 was awesome. Even the friendlist is nice where you now don’t need to scroll down to see what people are playing. It would be awesome if you could add trophylevels there in the future.

Well, i certainly enjoyed the amusing comments above.
It is certainly a hard world be live it and only made harder now that it doesnt flash up “playstation 3″ when i start a game….
On a more serious note i do have one small but iritating issue.
- When i go onto the web browser it opens up full pixel, this seems to have been implemented since the iplayer was introduced and is iritating for wesites like wikipedia which display widescreen and are now slow to navigate.
Other than that more options would otherwise be welcome as always, if people dont like bigger icons let them have the small ones, same goes with the screen flash. Im sure the friends list alterations are part of future updates i just hope these come sooner rather than later.

what crap, these should just be put into the help forums or whatever, this is no real Q&A, you havnt answered the more important questions, like someone above stated, you answered very selective questions.
i bet this thursday will be another poor update, they will just give us a few themes, i gurantee its nothing special.
never going to trust what SCEE say, have to see it to believe it.

Thanks for updating us on this. There seem to have been a real shift in the ammount of information given to customers and that can only be a good thing.
Is it reasonable to assume (as you have not commented) that the Playstation Store icons will not recieve a toggle option and that the boxes around the friends list will remain? I think everyone would appreciate an update as to the reason for the grey boxes.

Thanks for the answers to *some* queries.
The Friends List is the easiest thing to fix. 99 percent of people hate it. It simply requires the graphic to be removed – no localisation involved for menu options or functionality. Please, can we just get rid of them or can you perhaps give a hint as to their placeholder nature because that’s what they look like – placeholders.
For shame!
