Did you enjoy the first part of SCEA‘s behind the scenes motion controller video series? That’s a rhetorical question — I already know you did. So we’re happy to deliver the second part of the series, which Chris from the US PlayStation Blog will introduce below.
Last week, we introduced Part I in a series of posts focusing on the recently announced PlayStation motion controller. Senior Researcher, Richard Marks, shed some light on the PlayStation Eye’s camera technology and how the motion controller works.
We know you guys are eager to learn more, so this week we’re talking to Anton Mikhailov, a software engineer (and right hand man to Richard Marks) in SCEA’s Research & Development department. You may recognize Anton from the motion controller demonstration at this year’s E3 presentation. Anton was gracious enough to break down the new controller’s PVC origins and some of the possible applications for this new technology. Check out the video below for more details.
Next week, we’ll be posting Part III so be sure to stop by the PlayStation Blog for more exclusive motion controller info.

It’s impressive tech and you guys are doing a great job BUT (there always is)…
Please add an analog stick while there is still time.
It adds so much for core games. So many Wii titles are on rails and whatnot since it’s missing an analog stick on the remote itself. The PS3 motion controller should really be half a DS3 (+ motion and pointer functionality obviously).
Without an analog stick it’s destined to just function as a ‘Beta’ device (or prototype) for Sony’s next console.
Please add an analog stick so devs and gamers alike can enjoy the full potential here.

Looks like we are building up for a Big Controller announcement around TGS time. My money is on Sony announcing that the controllers will be out for Christmas, thereby capitalising on the current high sales of PS3 Slim. On top of that, it would be they are releasing their controller, 3-6 months ahead of Microsoft’s Natal.
I just hope if I am right, it is not rushed and you get a red bulb of death on the controller
.

Forgot to add: The lack of analog sticks on the wands means this is doomed to casuals only applications.

Hm.. I wish There would be games like Baldur’s gate or Champions of Norrath for PS3 .. with couple controllers like these..

Controller could be interesting. I really hope that more items use it as opposed to the PSEye which has nothing of real value! Why was the EyeToy games never updated for the PSEye?? My kids loved the PS2 EyeToy games but now the camera just sits on top of the TV collecting dust.
So please please please actually make something nice that uses the tech.

Looks like you painted a Wii Controller black and stuck a giant ball on the end.
Almost makes me wish you guys would just focus on your 3D fetish you all have at Sony.

The tech is looking promising and I’m hoping for some good coverage at TGS – including final spec, official name, launch games, and hopefully confirmed release date and pricing.
One thing that bothers me in these recent videos though is the emphasis on using one controller rather than two – this sounds to me that Sony are positioning it (like the Wii) that the second part of the controller is optional. If this is the case I would find it very disappointing and a huge mistake.
History shows that if you make something optional devs are less likely to adopt it – if the standard is that it comes with 1 controller then devs will cater mostly for that lowest denominator and things like the bow and arrow control are less likely to be developed.

[Pt 2]
Including 2 controllers as standard positions it as a really strong control solution – it allows the powerful use of the visuals that your arms become and extension of the in-game character arms (such as the bow and arrow demo) and this will look good in adverts when compared to Natal, and also it allows built-in ability to have local two-player gaming for simple games that only need one controller each – in fact two-player offline play for games like this would probably become the standard given every user has a minimum of two.
I suppose it’s a cost issue – but since when has that stopped Sony from releasing something? I’m sure people will see the value in having a 3-in-1 control system allowing complex two handed interaction, simple one handed interaction, and simple two-player gaming, from a single controller bundle. Even if they are available individually as well, the ‘Starter Pack’ should consist of the PSEye, two controllers, and a game compilation.
I personally think it is a mistake to move away from the dual handed concept which a lot of people assumed was the standard setup at E3, the solution looks more unique and compelling as a dual handed solution…

Why do people want answers about 3.0 when you have this. When is TGS?

People are so sad sometimes, this is about the motion controller, not 3.0. Jem already said it’d come today
Anyway, hello from America!

I must admit that after E3 I was more interested in Natal’s direction, ie no controller required. But every time I see Sony’s offering I am more excited by it. Tracking seems very accurate, even at this early stage. Fingers crossed that they can match it with some great software-the PSEye hasn’t had much support since launch, so it will be nice to have something to use it for!

Hey guys, I have a great idea for the PS Wand and 3D games, imagine, Killzone 2, you look at your left and there is a Helghast, shot with the Wand and you see how the blood splashes your face, Oh my god!! this is fantastic, can do great things by combining the two technologies!!
