First of all, an apology. You might have been noticing an increasingly frequent and increasingly annoying amount of adverts in-between videos recently. This was due to a bug and was certainly not intentional and we have been working like dogs to fix it. We would never overload you with adverts like this and we apologise for any annoyance and also ask you to keep using the service (and tell your friends) as this has now been fixed.
Now to the fun stuff…
Since VidZone launched back in the summer of love 2009 (Wow time flies when you are having fun) we have been asking all of you to let us know what you think of the service. What you liked, what you hated, what you thought was good but needed improving what you thought was rubbish and needed getting rid of completely, what you loved so much that you can’t live without… etc. We have had teams of people compiling all correspondence from the various tweets and blogs and Facebook messages and worked out what you all wanted the most…
Long story short we have a major update for you that makes VidZone better than ever!!
Pre-roll advertising will be shown no more than once every 15 minutes – No more adverts after every video, guaranteed!
16:9 support, true full screen display – This means that if the video is shot in widescreen, it will display in its full widescreen glory on your TV.
Virtual Keyboard is now supported in Search – Use your external or the standard PlayStation virtual keyboard to type instead of scrolling through each letter.
Search is faster and improved – Faster searching and you are now able to search for special characters (ie you can now search for P!nk etc)
Start up time is reduced – No more waiting about to get partying!
Audio volume on music videos can now be normalised – Each video will play at the same volume meaning no more volume control surfing
PlayStation Network presence now shows the music video being watched in VidZone on the XMB™ friends list – Your friends will now know what you are watching so no more secret Celine Dion video viewing sessions!
Support for PlayStation Store purchases in Download menu – Videos will link to equivelant RockBand track in the PlayStation Store with more game/product links coming soon.
Default settings are now saved – If you have turned the clicker off, it will remember it for the next time you open VidZone.
Cache has been increased – VidZone will store more of your last viewed videos on the PlayStation’s hard drive so you don’t have to stream so much data.
Help screens are available in Settings menu – Having issues? Try the new help screens to answer your questions
Settings menu has been reordered – More logical ordering of the setting menu.
As well as a load of other little bug fixes to make your VidZone experience a much more pleasurable one.
So that’s what you have all been waiting for I think. Of course we will continue to update both content and the application until it is perfect but hopefully this will keep you happy until we update again.
We want you to keep suggesting improvements to the service so below are all the channels of communication for you to get requesting.
1. Reply to any blog entry that is posted here on http://blog.eu.playstation.com
2. Twitter us www.twitter.com/vidzone
3. Email us playstation@vidzone.tv
4. Facebook
For any problems you having with the service please e-mail ps-problems@vidzone.tv
That’s it I think, and this is me signing off once more. Let me know what you think and I will be back to write about more exciting stuff shortly.
Keep it real
Ben

Thanks for the fantastic update, and gotta say loving the service.
May i request 1 feature, can we have the ability to open and use the web browser when the app is running?, i would assume this would be possible as certain games have a similiar feature, it would be a great way to listen to the music and also surf the web at the same time.
If not it’s no biggy.

Music request.
Can we get an old school drum and bass feature sometime or possibly a hardhouse/dance feature, i would love that,

what would be nice now is some sort of upscaler when 16:9 support is on and off. I seem to still get black bars on my sony bravia telly because i have my tv picture settings as full pixel i usually use this setting as it shows everything on screen when gaming so which one is right (Full pixel or normal-16:9)
Someone help me please
Thanks.

Feature request.
Can we have the ability for the service to begin downloading the next song on a playlist/coming next if the now playng song has fully downloaded.
I think some songs may already do this (i may be wrong) BUT some don’t, i was just listening to a playlist and a song was a quater downloaded when the now playing song had finished playing BUT the following song after that hadn’t downloaded at all even thought the now playing had finished downloading a good 2 minutes before the song had finished.
If this isn’t already done can it be looked into as it would be a great feature.

Wow, this is really quite spectacular! Thank you very much team. My only wish now is for VidZone to be rolled out to every other country so they can use it too! Oh, and will non-widescreen recorded videos be stretched to 16:9?
Posted on 14 September, 2009 at 5:47 pm by Ben Creasey
Hi Raider197
No, all 4:3 content will displayed as normal, but 16:9 content will switch to full widescreen mode.

Posted on 14 September, 2009 at 6:23 pm by RBMaurice
Maybe a stupid question, but as I haven’t been able to checkout VidZone yet(because of my location) I am really wondering if there are any Game Soundtrack playlists? Games like FIFA and DiRT both feature pretty all-round artists for their soundtrack and for the people who play the games it would be pretty fun to stay in the mood while they are not playing… As most times it’s a good chance to hear some new cool artists which in case of DiRT2 are hard to find the title and artist of the music.
Aswell as it might prove to be a small promotion for the game itself, which on it’s turn could also be linked to the Demo in the PSS and stuff like that!
Anyway great update! And hope to see it soon in The Netherlands
Posted on 15 September, 2009 at 10:11 am by Ben Creasey
hi RBMaurice
Thats a good idea, we have had a couple of game playlists in the past but there is always room for more.

All video should be stretched out to 16:9 it makes everything neat most HDTV has this feature inbuilt when watching freeview or sky.
Posted on 15 September, 2009 at 10:14 am by Ben Creasey
Hi Macbelonwu10
The two options for making 4:3 videos widesreen is to either stretch them (which in my opinion looks bad) or to cut off the top and bottom of the video (which in my opinion looks bad too) the decision to keep 4:3 videos in their native format was chosen instead. This may be reviewed at a later stage though.

gosh… you guys were listening after all!
Although i’m still not enthusiastic about interrupting the flow every 4 or 5 vids with an advert which clashes with the mood i’m trying to create, i’m impressed by news of the update. I can’t complain about the adverts too much i guess considering it’s a free service but the update addresses most of the issues that made me un-install vidzone so maybe it’s time to give it another go…..

Fine, I found the search and keyboard thing I report first day, I’m glad to see it’s done
It will surely improve the enjoyment, as sometimes it was a bit uncomfortable spend a lot of time to search a video and making the playlist, I will use it much more now.
I like the 16:9 you put too, it was something this generation had to have.
I don’t know by the way but… have you or will you add bluray remote control use? I have one and would be great to be able to use it
More than that, the remote control is shouting for something so… obvious and useful “I have a Play, Pause, Stop, Rewind, Next Video button, etc, use me please!”.
Thank you for all the improves, I understand they take time, but you did it and in a correct time. Perfect Vidzone Team

Thanks Ben for the great update but I’ve still got a problem with the content…there’s too much rap and dance going up but hardly any rock…u no I see it a lot over the blog that people are asking for rock like linkin park and green day and slipknot and stone sour…u don’t even have any guns n’ roses or thirty seconds to mars! I think u need to listen a bit closer or at least give us a reason why they aren’t up…u talked about wanting vidzone to be perfect but if that’s the way u want it, these bands have to be there. Period. Bit of paramore wouldn’t go amiss either…my god Hayley is hot…:P
Posted on 15 September, 2009 at 10:20 am by Ben Creasey
Hi nemesisND1derboy
The reason we don’t have these artists are becuase we are still negotiating with the labels that these bands are on. It takes time for everything to be worked out but we assure you we are working as hard as we can to get all the videos that you want.
Hopefully i will be able to give you some good news soon, don’t worry we haven’t forgotten about you rock fans.

Hi,
I finally managed to come out of the ADSL wilderness as a certain Spanish telecom company finally got their act together after 4 months of waiting and I downloaded this on Saturday. I really liked it a lot and the improvements are for sure better, especially the search.
No maybe I haven’t studied it enough but how do you play the whole playlist? It seemed to play one song from the playlist and then jump to another random song. I could only play one at a time from the play list. Am I doing something wrong?

“We always said we were listening to what people wanted.”
That’s wonderful news, Ben!!!
So…since the 2nd week of Vidzone I have been requesting some Disturbed content, and other people have been asking about content they would like so…have you been doing anything to secure THESE wants or have you just been dealing with the aesthetics of the program itself and not the actual content?
Posted on 15 September, 2009 at 10:23 am by Ben Creasey
Hi SpiderMike_X
The reason we don’t have these artists are becuase we are still negotiating with the labels that these bands are on. We are working getting all labels but it does take time to negotiate (especially withthe major labels)
We are trying out hardest i promise.
