Hi Everybody,
I’m Joey and I’m the European Product Manager for WipEout HD Fury on Blu-ray.
I’m really excited to tell you that we will be releasing a Blu-ray that contains both the core WipEout HD game and the explosive Fury expansion pack for €24.99 as well as a digital bundle at the same price on the PlayStation Network!
For the first time people without access to the PlayStation Network can experience the thrill of piloting an anti gravity racer at speeds of over 600KPH!
The Blu-ray will contain:
- 28 reversible tracks
- Two campaigns (HD and Fury)
- 26 Individual Ship models
- 8 game modes (4 available for online play)
- Online ranking and Badge System
- 51 Trophies including a coveted Platinum trophy!
Now about those game modes:
- Single Race
- Time Trial
- Speed Lap
- Zone Mode
- Detonator
- Eliminator
- Zone Battle
- Tournament
- Playable online
The Eliminator game mode will allow you to release all that pent-up aggression as you use the full arsenal of WipEout weaponry to destroy your opponents. Forget those racing lines; this is all about destruction, with the victor being the first to reach the target score!
Zone Battle is about risk and reward! Acceleration is automatic as you swoop over zone pads to fill your zone bar. Your choice is whether to use the bar to increase your speed and boost your ship ever closer to the target zone or absorb it to replenish vital lost energy. Warning, avoid the ‘zone barriers’, obstacles left on the track by your opponents as they boost towards the target zone, hitting these can literally destroy your hopes of victory!
Detonator mode introduces a brand new ship model to the game that will test both your piloting skills and your shooting accuracy as you accelerate through as many as 14 stages. Score points by destroying the mines that have been strewn along the track and take out the bomb on each stage to earn additional points. The more accurate you are the more points and bonuses you will score!
Have a look at the screens below to see what WipEout HD Fury is all about
See you at the track!

What no SPLIT SCREEN 2player?? What a rip off… no point in getting this then cus i cant PLAY with my friends. Is it THAT hard to add 2player to these games nowadays?…what a SHAME…
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 1:19 pm by Joey Payne
Hi Microdroid,
no rip off here, just a mistake, of course you can play split screen mode with a friend !

Sort of weird to include “Playable online” as a bullet point there and you might want to change a certain “pay” to a “play” before people start worrying. ;P But otherwise, it’s nice to see this awesome game and bundle get the Blu-ray release it deserves.

So, is this any different than the HD and Fury game off the PSN? Is there any additional content?
And Microdroid, I’m pretty sure this will have splitscreen as the PSN download version has it
Posted on 18 September, 2009 at 4:32 pm by Joey Payne
Hi Rama26285,
this is exactly the same game
But obviously this is the first time it has been available on disc rather than just online
There is a great piece of WipEout art on the reverse inlay of the box

“For the first time people without access to the PlayStation Network can experience the thrill of piloting an anti gravity racer at speeds of over 600KPH!”
Thanks for the thought – but wouldnt be better just to give us PSN access? Then we can buy many more games not just Wipeout HD.

@NUFCRULE & Microdroid yes, the psn release has 2 player split screen, so i see no reason why it would be removed

@8
yes, both split screen and demo are available on PSN.
The release date? October 16th

Nice Racing Game but the difficulty is too extreme, one mistake and you’re gone.I would give the game a 8.4 rating boss out

Truly wonderful game. It deserves all the exposure it can get.

I knew this was coming. Glad I stayed strong and didn’t get it from PSN. Wipeout belongs on the shelf because it’s a staple Playstation franchise!

It isn’t cool releasing PSN games on disc.
Not only are the downloaders punished by not being able to re-sell the game when bored of it but the retail copy will drop in price after a while so the PSN buyers end up paying more that a lot of people too.
Not cool.

Yeah its not cool. Who cares about those countries who do not have a PSN store?

Will there be a big game install for the game?
I got Ratchet&Clank:QFB on Blu-ray and had to have a 4GB+ game install on my PS3? The reason i got the game on Blu-ray disc was not to fill up my PS3′s hard drive
Posted on 18 September, 2009 at 4:35 pm by Joey Payne
HI Carl-G,
there will be an install requirment nut nowhere near as much as 4GB’s
Thanks

Damn just got fury last week but I just know i’ll end up buying it again as like many people have mentioned, its always nicer to have the real game in your hands.
A game everyone should have in their collection.

Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 1:00 pm by Burkatron81
@ Carl-G
Fury and HD weighed in around 2GB of hard drive space if i remember correctly.

@15 I understand where you’re coming from, but honestly if WipEout HD was on blu-ray from the start and tradeable now, you wouldn’t be getting much back. And you’d be losing a great game, too. My local stores (EB Games and JB Hi-Fi) don’t even accept Resistance 2 for ‘trade 3 for a new game’ or ’2 and some cash for 1′ deals. Besides, this just brings it to more people. If stores have to drop prices to clear stock, they will do that and that is out of Sony’s control.
Thanks so much for the great work you’ve done on WipEout HD/Fury Studio Liverpool – totally getting my younger mates without credit cards to pick this up.

I have a question. I already have WipeOut HD. What if I buy the HD/Fury bluray, and install that on my PS3, will I get to keep the progress I made in WipeOut HD???
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 1:50 pm by Joey Payne
Hi Polypinoon,
sorry but because the download version and the disc based version have different product codes you cant use a saved game on one from the other
Thanks

Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 1:03 pm by oggob
@ Carl-G
I’d say it would be the same, all PSN games that hit Blu-Ray end up installing onto the HDD and played from the HDD, the game is required to be in the unit still…
HD weighs in about 2GB, so it’s not as bad as R&C:QFB…

Is there any chance we’ll see the disc version in the US?

26
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 1:07 pm by Nostromo74
Well I bet that with PlayStation 4 games will be download format only.
27
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 1:24 pm by MobileTone
“as a digital bundle at the same price “….
well, that’s a blu-ray copy sold then. plus you can bet it’ll be cheaper too once the IRL Stores knock a couple of quid off. why would you buy the digital copy for MORE than a hardcopy with all the wonderfulness that entails.
28
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 1:32 pm by NUFCRULE
@26
possibly , but thats ages away and they will probz end up coming with like a 5tb (5000gb) HDD
could you imagine having uncharted as a download , 47gb some ps3′s couldnt even hold it lol
also where is todays store update ???

Not to bring down a post (as this is great news) BUT this clearly shows how bad the EU blog/Store etc is, this news has been known for over a week now and has been reported on various other sites etc and yet it only got posted on the OFFICIAL blog today, that’s pretty poor going IMO.
Anyways, great news as the more people who get to play this great game the better, i have just one question, now that this is getting a retail release does this mean you won’t restart those horrid adverts on the loading screen?, i really think a retail game with loading adverts would be pretty shoddy (well not as shoddy as putting them in an almost year old product in the 1st place without warning
).

Pity that the game saves are not compatible
33
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 2:06 pm by Mok_ojin
Thats a real shame about the save games not being compatible
maybe this can be patched to allow users with the psn version to use there saves.
May pick this one up still. It’s always nice to have the physical product.
34
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 2:19 pm by swcoruscant
This is good because I like to have it as a physical thing rather than as downloadable content.

Confusion?! Far out I got the PSN Store version. Bleh. Would like to have the disc version… oh well that sucks bad time

@26 – i think disc-based games will still be around for PS4, assuming it will here on or before 2015. penetration of super-fast broadband (20mb/s +) is pretty poor, at least in the UK anyway, and the infrastructure capacity just isn’t there, so downloading of full disc-based games is not practical for most people, and won’t be for quite some time. especially since some developers are starting to talk up the big advantage that the blu-ray disc has and can offer over the competition since it can fit 50gb onto a single disc (and higher capacity prototypes exist), and as developers push the limits of the technology more and more data will be needed. on regular ADSL connections it could take anything from 1 to 7 days to download that much, plus the majority of the UK’s internet subscriptions are data-capped (unrestricted & unlimited usage is rare these days). consoles would need massive hard-drives and also the ability to back-up games, plus the videogame industry needs the retail sector, it would be short sighted to cut off the hand that feeds. i also think there’s still a large section of the fanbase who will prefer a physical product, just as there are millions of music fans who will always prefer LPs/CDs to mp3s.

If the reason it’s coming to blueray after the fury expansion is for people without online does that mean there will be no more DLC for it?
38
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 2:54 pm by Slarth
@31 – Thanks, I might pick this up now
39
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 2:56 pm by jfsebastian
I too would like to understand the logic behind selling the downloadable game at the same price as the BD version. Surely the whole point of downloadable games is lower costs with the lack of a physical disc and packaging. What incentive is there for consumers to download rather than buy the disc?

Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 2:58 pm by somethingatt
Hey guys, I love Wipeout HD and own it digitally with an intention to buy the expansion pack when my loan money comes in (heehee suckers think I’m paying for books :p)
BUT
I gotta ask- What the hell is up with the PS Store and lack of news/ updates?
Microsoft had it’s update up at 10am (UK) so c’mon guys, prepare it Wednesday night, have it up early Thursday.
All the PES2010 fans are flocking to the 360 now because you are at [currently] 5 hours later than them.
41
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 3:02 pm by krioto
@39 – wipEout HD was released as THE premium game for the PSN.
I think that maybe now given the success of the game and the fury DLC, and given that many fans do not have access to, or a unwilling to download full games, are being given the chance to grab the game.
42
Posted on 17 September, 2009 at 3:10 pm by twistedintoform
@39 – they’re the same price because of something called retail integrity. all very well and good in principle, but anybody who can’t find this (or any other game) below the recommended retail price isn’t really looking hard enough. unfortunately there’s no such freedom for the digital download, so the retail integrity argument is flawed.

Thank you. That’s what I was waiting for. I don’t like DRM Downloads, but now it’s time to get WipeoutHD
.
I guess like all(?) other BD releases of PSN games a HDD installation is needed. How big will it be?
