Hi everyone – it’s Dan (aka drexl) here with an update on PlayStation Home.
You’ll have noticed that we’ve moved to the new Home 1.3 client release. It’s full of new features, and improvements – we really hope you enjoy it!
This new release enables us to start offering new objects and items (including dice, hovercraft, camera and shrink potion) which mean that not only is the range of customisation and gameplay options increased, but that you can start to create your own games within Home, and raise the competitive bar with your friends when you’re hanging out in Home Square.
I’d like to point out that these items will be phased in over a period of weeks, so we’ll be starting with the camera first and adding new objects as soon as we can.
If you want to find out more information about what else is contained within 1.3, then the accompanying notes will be on the Home forums as well, so keep your eyes peeled if you want to get the full skinny about this new release.
In the meantime, for those of who haven’t been in Home for a while – come back and have a look at how we’ve changed! There is a lot more to see and do than ever before, including spaces for inFamous, Resistance, Burn Zombie Burn, and much more. Come and join the fun, make some new friends, and have a good look around.
Thanks very much and talk to you soon.
Dan (drexl)

Will it ever be possible to jump in home?
It’s a serious question, I constantly want to jump when I’m in there….

Thanks for posting an official blog post drexl but there’s still no information posted anywhere that the theatre has been updated to include social auditoriums too.
That was a huge feature that has gone unnoticed and unannounced.

Hi – a summary of features was posted on the forums, and our community teams will be encouraging some open discussions about the new release over the coming days. Hopefully this will get ideas, information and opinions flowing freely, and should answer all your questions.

I read that 1.3 was causing lockups on some PS3s with certain items to blame (i.e. the Fat Princess throne).
Has this been fixed?

Glad to hear the Camera is first to arrive. This Thursday perhaps?
1.3 > I like the idea of the queue, system. I am hoping it will be steadily implemented more into other in Home games such as Helicopter Hit, the Burn Zombie Burn Maze & (if it’s still on the way) the Sirens Space. It works well already for the pool and bowling, however joining teams of friends would also be welcomed.
Many Thanks

@Cursetheman : If your game freezes, delete Home (triangle on Home icon in XMB) then reinstall it. It’s a pretty common bug since the update.

Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 2:25 pm by KidHypeTellem
@Cursetheman go under network and press triangle on the home icon and delete it. When its done, back under network click on home and install it. Once its done, it won’t freeze again

I’ve given up – no plans to reinstall it again now!

Will these items take as long to be ‘phased in’ as the Picture Frames have taken? Any news on when they will be coming to EU Home and why it has taken so long to do add them when the USA has had them for months? Why should we want to pay £4 for a personal space when you can’t actually personalise it in any meaningful way?
1.3 introduced a few nice tweaks, but it’s still miles away from where it should be at this stage – it’s not even reached the potential of the original alpha build that was unveiled in 2006 by Phil Harrison yet! The EU version is even struggling to keep up with the US/Jap version which has seen substantial improvements to it’s ‘Central Plaza’ and core areas like the Theatre (there one actually allows social interaction while watching video content – which is the point of Home).
Is there a replacement to Ted_The_Dog yet, someone in place to help steer the EU Home back on track? And why must we be part of the clique that hangs around the Home forum to get information? Home updates should be as regular a part of the EU blog as SingStar and VidZone updates…
Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 6:37 pm by Daniel Hill
I’ve referenced this in recent forum postings already, but there will be a new Home community representative with you soon, and I’ll keep you posted as we progress…official introductions will be made nearer the time

Am I the only person who thinks PS Home is a baffling waste of time space and money?
I just dont get it.
Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 6:39 pm by Daniel Hill
We’re not making you spend anything in Home – it’s free to access…and we’ve got more and more content and things to do arriving all the time…I hope you’ll pop back in to see us soon – you might be surprised…

Hi Dan, i would like to do a good look around but the issue as you sure know is that home is almost unusable for german visitors as half of the content is censored and can’t be loaded due to Age Restrictions. I dont need Sony to protect me as i am 30 years old. Has Sony been working on a solution to this? It seems there is simply nothing happening to find a solution to this problem. Why cant i simply type in my ID-Cards number or something to prove my age. Sony could take the servers down for germany, it would make no difference at all. This is very disappointing for one of the largest video game markets in the world.
Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 6:42 pm by Daniel Hill
Hi Tojeka – I know all about the issues you are referring to and how frustrating they are. As soon as I know anything new here I’ll either get back to you personally, or let the (forthcoming) SCEE Home community rep get back to you with more info…

There seems to be alot of issues with this updated freezing up on the PS3. I had the problem when I updated to 1.3 and then later on. I ended up deleting the furniture data for my apartment to get in the second time. I don’t think most people know how or will take the time to get around these issues. A friend of mine said he can’t be bothered and said he would wait for the next update.

Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 3:14 pm by Apnomis
@ loonytoon1982, seriously? EU Home has social auditoriums now?! I’ve seen nothing about that, and I went on the Home Forum and read the release notes about the update – there was no mention of it.
I will give it a try tonight, I find it hard to believe no one made a fuss of that! Maybe there’s hope for the EU version afterall – I just wish the updates weren’t always several months behind US/Jap Home.

I still have to wait and wait and wait and wait to go from one place to the other to get an enviroment where I can play a crapy game (that I do once or twice) and never come back to. It is completely useless. 1.3 doesn’t inprove on any of these.

Hi Daniel,
Can you tell us if picture frames are coming to the UK/EU Home? Some members of the official community forums have said that they wont be coming to the EU because of legal reasons.
One more question please! Will it be possible to use our Home avatar on our PSN ID? Why have a separate Home & XMB avatars when it could be simplified with a universal PS3 avatar?
Thanks for taking the time!

Does the update make all the Home spaces load faster? Out of curiousity I went into Home after I got my Slim after a long absence and it was still the same slow as molasses annoying loading screens and downloads. Reducing this and making it a more fluid experience should be the top priority.
Also after all this time there is still the same sterile atmosphere with the bird twitters and muzak. The place is the antithesis of cool. For the demographic it targets that is a complete failure. There should be a soundtrack of realistic ambient noise and the buildings filled with beats.
Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 6:44 pm by Daniel Hill
Regarding the sterile atmosphere – I’m sorry you feel that way, I find it quite relaxing! However, nothing ever stays the same – watch this space…

In my view it’s quite easy what needs to be done to make Home a success:
1) Add ‘Sony Bravias’, ‘Sony HiFis’ and Picture Frames to personal spaces to allow media streaming off your HDD with Friends. Maybe also ‘Sony Vaios’ to allow internet browsing from your personal space.
2) Add Sony Walkmans for you to have custom music playing while you walk around Home public spaces.
3) Make proper Home Game Launching compulsory like trophies are (what is the point of launching to a title screen and losing all connection to the people you launched with?)
4) Introduce ‘premium public spaces’ which are sort of paid for social games like your competitor’s 1vs100 game concept or make PSN avatar based games load into the Home world with your home avatar (like your game show based games – see the Buzz Space). And when you face up to the fact your average user age is 36, add some age verification and adult-only spaces – like a real money casino and poker room (see EA Poker Space).
Continued…

Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 3:29 pm by Apnomis
…Part 2
5) Fully support the new motion controllers when they are available.
If you’re not going to bring back voice chat then make sure all Spaces have background/environmental noise, it’s like walking into a morgue walking into some of the spaces.
6) Drastically improve load times/transitions of the spaces and load times of other avatars/textures.
7) Streamline the interface – reduce the number of clicks/screens it takes to get from the XMB to your Home Space (it should be click XMB, load, arrive in your personal space), and overhaul the stupid and clunky scattering dominoes navigation system.
9) Encourage more Game to Home links (virtual Home items etc) and maybe even increase the presence of your Home avatar on the XMB user profile screen…

All good points! Thanks for the post – but can I just say, I too know what I want to have in Home, but unfortunately I can’t just wave a wand and make it all happen. We don’t enjoy NOT giving you guys cool new stuff – we want it too! But we have to plan, and work together on this global project, and do as much as we can. I believe that in many ways Home is already a big success, and it can only get better as we go along!

Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 3:35 pm by Ivan_Krazy
Thanks for the update
Although I find the in-game launch so useless if it isn’t supported! I tried to get people to join in Call Of Duty World At War and we wanted to play together… but no that’s not the case. Instead the game loads up and that’s it… huh?! What the hell is the point of this? Total useless **crap** (sorry had to say that).
Hopefully you can resolve this and rather we should join in the lobby together otherwise it will be impossible to find each other to play online together!

At first my PS3 frooze at the loggin screen (ini.), but that went away when I reinstalled Home. But now I cant connect or the few times I mangage to connect I get disconnected within minutes (D35 errors mostly). I have to say that for me atleast Home is getting more and more unstable, I never got disconnected or had trouble connecting until a couple of month ago.

And please put more trailers in the cinema. I kind of like wathing trailers like that. Add several stories of trailer cinemas.

Hi, I can appreciate the amount of work that is being put into this update but I’m suffering problems with the new updated version, as when my screen reaches the initializing stage during the login to home my playstation freezes and I have to manually shut down the PS3 via the switch as the whole system operation locks up.

5 days after the official US post and it took that long to localise the above. I assume like most things the US will get the camera first and what happenened to the picture frames, as well as everything else thats either missing being localised or waiting for an update that other regions have.

5 days late
And no release notes on the blog
Still no word on the issues 1.3 is making
Etc
Sort it out please, ask Sony for more money or resources for the EU PLEASE
Or your going to get a shock one day k

“7) Streamline the interface – reduce the number of clicks/screens it takes to get from the XMB to your Home Space (it should be click XMB, load, arrive in your personal space), and overhaul the stupid and clunky scattering dominoes navigation system.”
Couldn’t agree with this more. Awful way to implement navigation. Add a map like Google maps or something.

I haven’t been on Home since about a year ago now, but now I’ve got into it
I’ve bought myself a Lakeside Log Cabin and have to say, it looks gorgeous and the view is cool.
But ever since I stepped foot inside my new home, I’ve been looking at what I want to put where, such as a Flat-screen TV, a Stereo, a few picture frames, maybe a nice carpet or two for the 2 rooms!
But wait… I can’t do ANY of these because the UK Home is lagging behind the US Home as always, also I went onto the US Home and my Jaw just dropped at the vast amount of stuff that WE don’t have, it’s not fair, even some of the prices work out cheaper!
Sort it out Sony and maybe I’ll be hooked on home even more, but for now I have a half-empty Log Cabin waiting for things to arrive which I can add to it to make it “MY” Home like promised over 2 years ago!

how much bad feedback for home do scee need to get before they strt listening to ps3 owners . home is a utter disgrace in europe ad drexl you being head of home team should be trying to give us more if u want anyone in e.u to actually use it . ive deleted home since 1.3 as just showed me that scee are never gonna do their jobs properly and put money bk into our home rather than their pockets . no wonder ttd got sacked the guy was on 1 holiday after another . are you even gonna reply to any of us drexl that hve funded home with buyn loads of stuff yet ur team continue to give us nothing in return . is the home square in e.u ever getting updated as im sure a lot dont know we have the oldest build of all squares hence why we cant get any of the stuff u.s have and jap, listen at home , world map kiosks etc . scee home is a complete shambles .

Actually while I’m here I’ll say this:
Give the UK and all other english speaking continents its OWN Home server!
You have no idea how annoying it is when I stroll through Home and the vast majority of people who don’t even speak english!
But again, on the US home, I didn’t encounter a SINGLE person who DIDN’T speak english, what the hell?!!

Tried it twice at weekend and locked up initialising both times.
Pretty bad to have released it with this issue in the first place, even worse that there’s no acknowledgement of any issues here on the blog, especially as it released a couple of days ago and you’re only posting today.
So i’m supposed to hunt around the internet for a solution, one that suggests deleting some home save data.
Sorry, but i’m not doing that. I’ll just stay out of home until i read on this blog it’s been fixed.

nice, shame you didn’t feel the need to post anything last week when home was down almost all day without a word of explanation.
was it because scee don’t employ enough staff so that now ted’s gone, for whatever reason, you had to do it yourself
i mean, it’s not like there was a new ps3 launched recently that might mean loads of new ps3 owners that wouldn’t know about the weekly maintanence.
oh wait, yes there was.
and i agree that if you’re going to slice up home give us the option to choose where to go based on language not some imaginary line drawn up hundreds of years ago.
and another thing why has europe still not got the picture frames?
or the graphitti game in the infamous space?
the legal issues with the frames were cleared up months ago, so what’s the hold up?
this is arguably the biggest region for the ps3 yet we get the worst level of service in every aspect of what scee do, how long do you think you can keep getting away with it?
Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 6:52 pm by Daniel Hill
I believe the downtime last week was messaged across our forums, as per usual.
I am not “trying to get away with anything”. As I’ve said before, and above, we don’t enjoy not giving you stuff. We’re working as hard as we can to improve the service all the time.

@CodeMonkey_UK:
I think the only confirmed solution is deleting the Home Icon on the XMB and re-downloading it.

Posted on 5 October, 2009 at 4:42 pm by seany1
if this is what is going to keep happening west with e.u who have bought most ps3s might i add getting scraps in home ad outdated home squares while other regions get loads of stuff then they should defo scrap it as all they are doing is milking e.u for cash and making other regions better

When are we going to get decent codec support? IEven Mpeg-2 files aren’t prperly supported, you can’t scene jump them & FF / RWD is a olympic event. The same applies for m2ts files. When are we going to see an expansion to Mp4 files that can actually play on my Multimedia PS3? I’m getting real tired of seeing etrror codes & “..not supported” for HD .avi’s & h264 Mp4 files. Better still if Sony Playstation intend to keep video codec support limited then how about you release video conversion software gauranteed to produced playable video files for the OVER fussy PS3. Release a stripped down lite version of Sony Vegas …hmmm now there’s a thought

It great isn’t it one minute its refer to the EU blog for all your updates, now its back to refer to the forums, then it will be refer to the blog. Is anyone talking in that office. The only patch notes on the forum were posted from a forum member and that was copied from the US blog.
I’ve adopted a new policy. Check the US blog for updates (Thanks to the handy link at the top of the EU blog, dohhhh!!) read it and be amazed at the content update, with extensive blog details, then delete all excitement as we will not get any of it. Await a EU blog update whenever that might be, and be prepared for yet another week of disappointment. Genius.

This is for the discussion of PS home, not the Firmware in general.

Hey Dan
When we will get picture frames? As we are now the ONLY region without them, Home hasnt really improved much for the EU in months while everywhere else has had leaps. US got PSPgo’s to hold and Japan got model PS3 Slims to have in their apartments and we got nothing at all

@biosnova your forgetting the localisation on those psp and ps3 ornaments …. oh wait there isnt any or do you lot need lawyers to let virtual ornaments of your own products into europe
