Hi all,
My name is Kevin Smyth and I am the SCEE Product Manager for Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time.
I’d like to give you some details about the Collector’s Edition we have planned, and answer any questions you might have.
The Collector’s Edition will come in a special foldout digipack containing the following:
- A 3D lenticular cover – and this isn’t like the dinosaur ruler you had at school, this features new 3D technology and looks awesome. Check out the video which gives you taste of how it will look, although to get the full effect you will need to check it out in the flesh (and please excuse my foot in the background
)
- An Artwork Book with exclusive concept artwork handpicked by Insomniac.
- A PSN Voucher, exclusive to the Collector’s Edition in PAL regions. This allows you to download the stellar Discovery Package, which launches you over to the Insomniac Moon, a special level that resembles the layout of the Insomniac Games’ offices! Scattered through this museum-like level, you will discover a moon’s worth of extra content that didn’t quite make it into the game.
The Collector’s Edition is available in the following countries in the listed stores. Please note that this isn’t all of the countries it will be available in, as some details regarding who will be taking the Collector’s Edition are still TBC.
- UK – GAME exclusive
- France – Available everywhere
- Spain – Available everywhere
- Italy – Available everywhere
- Australia – TBC
- New Zealand – EB Games
- Belgium – Game Mania, Smartoys (CLD), PlayerOne (BEMS), Consoles Fan (Horelec), Multimedia Partner (MMS), IPG (gameshop), Supra Center, Media Markt, consoleshop.be
- Holland – Bart Smit, Intertoys, Dexcom, Rigu, Bol.com, Consoleshop.nl, Toys XL
- Norway – GameStop & Elkjøp
- Sweden – GameStop & Siba, Media Markt, CDON, Webhallen, Nextstop, Discshop
- Denmark – GameStop & Others TBC
- Finland – Available everywhere

Steel books would be better than cardboard. Granted steel books are still prone to getting bashed in the post but at least they wont crumple when you’re trying to get the games out of them.
What I love most about the Collector’s editions is all the related memorabilia you get with them. Statue, art book, music, download codes are a fantastic way to support the series. Games like Fallout 3 and Assassin’s Creed 2 Black Edition are two great examples of how to do collector’s editions. Granted you would need the support of the developer and publisher etc.
It’s great to see more Collector’s / Special editions heading to the EU so keep up the great efforts Kevin. Any hints on what else will be receiving alternative editions?

I haven’t got any specifics but you can expect them for most of our upcoming big releases, I think you know what they are

As far as Collector’s Editions go, I’d be all over a really extravagant one. Not just a cardboard cover, a piece of DLC and an art book, but something like a plush Ratchet, or a model or something. Something that really pushes the boat out and really looks like a Collector’s item – take the Batman Arkham Asylum batarang, for example. Over the top, and a shame it was made of plastic, but it’s a very cool Collector’s item that only major fans would purchase.
I’m just throwing ideas out here. For the record, R&C is my favourite gaming series of all time, and I look forward to every game that Insomniac makes concerning the series. I’d embrace some top-quality R&C merchandise!
Oh, and and a Ratchet & Clank costume and level pack in LittleBigPlanet would be the best thing ever
I’ll stop now…

I love that we’re getting more CE’s for games.
I really love this one, my buddy at GAME has put my name down for pre-order for UC2 Special Edition and I’ll be sending him a PSN message here in a minute to pre-order this one for me too.
Can’t wait to see what you guys have lined up for GoW3 and GT5…I really enjoyed the Bugatti Veyron code I got with my Gran Turismo Edition PSP 3000 so make GT5′s CE a good one!

Any chance of having a choice between the Old Logo, and the new Logo PS3 Designs? Just read the comments, i hate the new logo as it is, and the new cases are even worse….
I prefer the Old Packaging myself

Really like who us Europeans are getting lots of love from the guys and gals over at Insomniac. It really takes out the sting of no Resistance 2 CE here. Thanks so much.
Now all I need is for the release date to come around. Shouldn’t be much longer should it? I’ve been in Media Blackout mode for lil’ over a month now.

Hi Insomniac. Just wanted to say that another Ratchet and Clank for PSP would be most welcome.

If it goes down to £45 I’ll jump on it. Mainly for the Moon. I still need to play Booty, maybe this weekend before Uncharted.
I’d definatly love to see some statue things in the vain of Bioshock. Also artbooks are high on my list of SE wants. RaC does have some georgous art. Insomniac should do a 2D PSN game with the funky art they used in their themes and some parts of the game.

Just to state my opinion as it was brought up. Steelbook casings are my favourite design for special editions.

Thanks for the explanation about why Europe is lagging behind with the new covers. I’m glad you have some more special editions planned, hopefully for Heavy Rain, GT5, ModNation Racers and MAG. I would like to echo some of the comments already made, steelbook is really good to have.
I would like to make one request. Can SCEE drop the ugly PSN circles that have been used on Killzone 2, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, LittleBigPlanet, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Singstar titles, and many other covers. It looks really ugly, and doesn’t help promote the PSN service, especially with “PlayStation Network” now written on the new cover. If you want to keep it, at least make it a sticker, so that it can be removed.

Kevin,is this special edition will be avaible on stores of spain on October?

Posted on 6 October, 2009 at 9:22 pm by JohnoBoy
Nice looking package, but not sure if the extra content is worth the premium cost.
If I played the first game on a US copy, will I be able to unlock stuff with my save on the European edition or will I need a US copy of this as well?

First off i’d like to say it looks brilliant, a real nice CE that’s clearly had effort put into it not just a steelbook.
But will the CE edition include the other goodies from the other packages as well?

Posted on 6 October, 2009 at 9:57 pm by Ennkidu
ohh no, not another cardboard box special edition… seriously why cardboard, its soo fragile – i guess ill go for the regular edition then….
in the future do metal cases… they rock

Can’t wait for it.
Will the Space Package contents be available to people at a later date? I want Hot Rod skin for Ratchet’s ship and Ratchet & Clank PlayStation Home Avatar skin but I am getting the CE.

Kevin, why not a steelbook instead of cardboard?
Is this coming to US also?

Posted on 7 October, 2009 at 1:53 am by NintendoTim
Got this story from Kotaku, and I’m from the US, FYI.
Does Sony not like American gamers? I mean, it started with Infamous, then Uncharted 2, now ACIT. Paying £55 (that’s $90 for me, which is $20 too much for an SE of this caliber) for a game, plus shipping to import, is absolutely ridiculous.
Naughty Dog (Uncharted), Insomniac (R&C) and Sucker Punch (Infamous) are all US-based studios, with ND being the only Sony-owned studio. All their recent outings on the PS3 are getting UK-exclusive Special Editions for their latest games. Conspiracy?
I would have loved to buy the Infamous SE, especially for the GTA-style box art and the comic. I’m a huge fan of SteelBook cases (love ‘em). The Uncharted 2 SE is really cool (especially the case), and all the extra goodies for ACIT are good as well.
What the crap, Sony? Where’s the love for America?

Posted on 7 October, 2009 at 7:19 am by Wiwo
“Available everywhere” is much better han stores exclusives. I like to buy all my games in the same store, but sometimes I have to go to a different one just to buy an Special Edition.
About cardboxes, I don’t like them. If there is a Special Edition of a game I want, I always buy this edition (I’m going to pre-order this Ratchet’s special edition this afternoon, after work), but I prefer steel or plastic boxes (and between steel and the regular plastic boxes, I prefer the las ones).
I prefer special editions like Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Prince Of Persia or FarCry 2, that included the regular plastic box, but also some nice extras. My favourite one, the soundtrack. A full soundtrack is allways welcome.
I already have the other two Ratchet games on PS3 (both in BluRay, not the downloable version, and both since day one), and I love them. I can’t wait to play this new Ratchet.

they may be US studios but who got LBP first when that was made in the UK, F1:CE is another one…….

why are these special levels or items with these special edition always a code to download separately?
why can’t they just be put on the disc?

Posted on 7 October, 2009 at 11:28 am by whoismilan
Neat, I think I’ll pick up this version.
Btw, it’s good that we got an announcement about this before the game’s release. This year, there have been a few cases (inFamous, Street Fighter 4, …) where the collector’s edition was made available in Finland a few days after the normal version was released. Not fun when you pick up a game on day 1, only to a few days later find a collector’s edition that you would have wanted.

Am I the only one who likes foldout cardboard art cases? Sloppy Royal Mail handling shouldn’t stop them being made, I’ve personally never received one damaged and if I did I would take it to my nearest Game store and ask for a return/replacement on the grounds that it wasn’t packaged properly. A ‘collector’ is supposed to look after ‘collectors editions’ so damage to the box after delivery shouldn’t be an issue.
Steelbooks are OK, but they aren’t as ‘exciting’ as fold out cardboard cases IMO (and can get be dented by Royal Mail just as easily). Maybe it would be possible to make the same style cardboard art cases out of a more robust material, like some kind of laminate or plastic? Although I suppose that would make them too expensive to produce.
One work around would be to have a stiff clear plastic sleeve that covers the foldout cardboard inner – I’ve seen this done before and it looks very effective, you could even print the name and logos on the plastic to give a 3D cell-animation effect and that means when you remove it from it’s sleeve you get the full cover art work without being obscured by any cover logos/writing…

Damn, I already preordered from PLAY.com a while ago
If I’d know this I’d rather have had a version that contained another Insomniac Museum..
I know you said it was TBC if this would become DLC for people who didn’t get the Collector’s Edition Mike, but I really hope it will.. Could you let us know when you know something more about it?

Oops, put Mike’s name instead of Kevin’s. Sorry about that, force of habit. But the question stays the same

I have a question about the UK special edition – if I go buy the collector’s edition from GAME, does this mean I don’t get the skin for the hotrod ship and for the gun that I would get if I buy it from play.com? Or is this going to be unlockable during the game or a DLC thing later on?
85
Posted on 7 October, 2009 at 1:50 pm by Brocky_Christ
Will the normal editions include the Insomniac Moon as a secret unlockable like in previous games with the museum or is it strictly a collectors edition thing.
86
Posted on 7 October, 2009 at 1:53 pm by DANTE234
The only thing you get with the collectors edition is the discovery pack which is the museum, the other things are at play.com, they will probably release it as DLC later on, but these codes are for getting these things straight away

Finally, some love for the European market. After all, at one point we were reponsible for over half of PS3s sold. Now, we just need a PSN maintenance that happens at a bad time for the US. They have had it too good for too long

heya nice to see that there’s new cool stuff in the collector’s edition.
Kevin Smyth, can u tell me whether the other pre-order packs [power, bolt and space] will be available within the game or if they will make it into the PSN store?

@ addyjones1234 : LBP and F1:CE weren’t exclusive to America, or Japan, or anyone else; you eventually got them.
Besides, you should be more angry at Japanese gamers; they got F1:CE before we did…3 months, even. And LBP had a week span between US and UK launches. A week. That’s nothing. You can thank the whole issue with that song with the Qur’an lyrics in them for the worldwide release delay.

So, another thing the NA doesn’t get. How unsurprising.
We didn’t get the Killzone 2 steel book, though everyone wanted one. We don’t get the Uncharted 2 steel book “collector’s edition”, though everyone wants one. We didn’t even get an inFAMOUS collector’s edition. EU also usually gets betas at least a month before NA does, on occasion, they don’t even come over to NA. We also get demos as preorder incentives (which isn’t the greatest marketing scheme ever, defeats the purpose of the demo), whereas EU sometimes gets them for free, no preorder necessary (huge example: Killzone 2).
What makes all of this worse is that it seems as if no one at SCEE, nor SCEA, ever even cares to explain why. Does anyone at either SCEA or SCEE ever think about giving an explanation?
And, please, it’s not whining, just a simple, honest observation, with a simple, honest question. I don’t want NA to get this, and EU get this, I’d like both regions to get neat incentives to pay more and get more. Wouldn’t you guys like more money from us, as well?
95
Posted on 8 October, 2009 at 1:47 am by MB8214
Err in the second to last sentence, it’s supposed to read: “I don’t want NA to get this, and EU NOT get this, I’d like both regions to get neat incentives to pay more and get more.”
I don’t want anything to not be available to my European friends.

@ NintendoTim, i didn’t say they were or if i did didn’t mean that, i know they’re not exclusive as they’re both sitting on my shelf!!
what i meant is you get things far earlier than us AND mostly cheaper(consoles are a big example) Or actually get them when we don’t(AFrika)
I’m not angry at anyone i’m just saying when you moan about something think of everything else you’ve got early/cheaper/actually got.

Nice edition- IN THEORY. But having been a collector of games for years, I HATE cardboard sleeve editions. Over time they get tatty, I always feel ripped off that I’ve got a second-rate case over the original plastic ones (which protect your purchase FAR better than the cardboard ones) and they look terrible on my shelf.
Case in point: the inFamous collector’s edition. I paid more for it than the standard (bought online) but was I happy with it? NO! The cheap cardboard has done nothing but annoy me since the day it arrived. I don’t want to loan it to my friends as I often do (as I am sure many do, swapsies for a week etc) because it is just a fragile piece of nonsense. And it looks out of place next to all my other PS3 games.
To be continued…
99
Posted on 8 October, 2009 at 12:43 pm by Bumblebee
…Continued!
But the worst crime was probably the Batman special edition… didn’t even have a proper case, just a cardboard digipack thing with no proper cover, and it was DVD sized not PS3 case sized so doesn’t fit with the other games AT ALL!
The best Special Edition packaging is when you get the original case, or something like it, and lots of extras. Not a card case…
Card packaging = INFERIOR!
PLEASE, NO MORE CARDBOARD “SPECIAL EDITIONS”! They feel cheap, fragile and are disappointing. Steelbook editions are the way forward! Or just a normal case with a special cover. PLEASE!

Posted on 8 October, 2009 at 12:47 pm by Bumblebee
Also:
Having followed the link… £49.99! For a digipack edition?
You suck Sony… I LOVE Ratchet & Clank, have completed all the series so far, and will have to get this but that Digipack will annoy the hell out of me. And £49.99! Seriously.
£49.99! For a card sleeve that offers no protection for my purchase.
That sucks.
