Hi Everyone
My name is Phil Lynch, UK Software Product Manager for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
I’m sure you guys have read Thach’s blogpost on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, if not pop over and have a look.
I’d just like to share with you guys some of the UK marketing and advertising for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves that you’ll be seeing on your screens over the coming weeks.
We’re sponsoring some great TV over the next 10 weeks, this will feature ‘Uncharted 2: Among Thieves’ branding and footage on all Sky One & Two Movies, including Mission Impossible 2, Hunt for Red October and Beverly Hills Cop. In addition the sponsorship will cover adventure programming on Discovery across four channels (Discovery, Discovery Shed, DMAX and Quest) including new episodes of Deadliest Catch, Whale Wars and Bear Grylls. The movie and adventure sponsorship angle obviously fits Uncharted 2 perfectly.
Along with this sponsorship, we’ll be running our TV ad, including great spots in both the England World Cup Qualifier against Belarus on the 14th and the UEFA Champions League match between Chelsea and Athletico Madrid the following week.
You’ll also be able to catch our ad in cinemas nationwide in movies like Saw VI, Jennifer’s Body, Triangle, 2012 and Zombieland among others
Along with this we have a big press campaign and a competition running on www.benathandrake.com, where you and a friend are in with a chance of winning a real Himalayan adventure and follow the footsteps of Marco Polo (and Nathan Drake of course) on a 19 day holiday in Nepal. UK residents only, sorry.
That’s it from me… let me know what you think of the campaign and if you have any other questions or comments.
Take Care, enjoy the game and I’ll see you guys online
Phil

I hate the narrator’s voice. It just doesn’t sound very professional at all. Makes me wanna punch that guy more than anything.
That said, the ad itself is pretty good. Mainly because it actually shows some gameplay footage.
In any case these ads will only have any significant impact if they run for at least a few weeks on all major TV channels instead of just a few days on a select few channels. Everytime I turn on the TV I see some stupid Wii or DS ad. Hell I even saw more 360 ads about frickin Sky and Facebook than any PS3 ad! What the f–k!?!
C’mon Sony, Uncharted 2 is the biggest PS3 title so far this year. So spend all you have to and promote the hell out of this game!

The ad is great but the voice and the paper cut-out look really doesn’t fit with what uncharted is.

The ad is quite bad imo.
The voice actor is doing a bad job, also any casual gamer wouldn’t be able to figure what game it is.
Advice: Put that Uncharted ____ 2 with that black background at the start of the ad like 2 seconds long.

@ MARKix, I agree about putting the ad during things like The Gadget Show and The X Factor etc, but maybe they will do that – the deal with Sky One & Discorvery is sponsorship not the ad, i.e. the little clips at the start and end of each ad break. Personally these are the only ads I watch nowadays as they are my cue to start fast forwarding and my cue to resume playback! They should do some more of these on Sky One’s big shows like Stargate Universe and Lie to Me etc.
If someone asked me to name some adverts off the top of my head I would say – TalkTalk for The X Factor, Swift Car Insurance for Sky One Sci-Fi shows (*very* annoying they were too), PC World for The Gadget Show etc. For me show sponsorship is far better than traditional ads now a big chunk of people use a ‘+’ box from any of the main service providers…

i preordered uncharted 2 and i will get it tomorrow but i met a guy in the beta that said he worked for ND and he had the ND logo next to his name when he played. he said he lived in LA and his PSN was Rogon but is he working in naughty dog?????

@ kenevert, yes Rogon is a ND dev – all the dev team have the paw print logo next to there name (which AFAIK can’t be faked) and I think they also have exclusive character skins too. Some others you may come across include NDI-richard and Winged…

I think the advert is crap really.
It would have been better using a cinema trailer style. This type of advert is ok if you want to advertise a console, but for a game, especially as good as Uncharted 2 you should advertise the game more.
Maybe have hinted towards the story or gameplay?

I got the game today, and i must say ‘wow’. This is by far the best game on the PS3, the best game in console history! I have a 42″ HD Ready tv, and my jaw dropped from the very beginning. The graphics is amazing! And the gameplay, camera, etc. is so good, i fell completely in love. And also the multiplayer part is brilliant. The hole feel of the game is just positive and impressive, unlike f.ex. Gears. I fully understand why Uncharted 2 has received a 6 on the dice from every major newspaper here in Norway! All my friends is also getting it.
I made a wise decision selling my Xbox, and putting my resources only in the PS3!
Love it, thanks Naughty Dog, you made my life som much better!

great trailers, great beta, rubbish ad.
people who have seen the trailers have only seen them after actively seeking them out online, in which case they don’t need to see any ads as they are up to speed with things and know whether or not they are gonna buy U2 anyway.
seriously, U2 deserves better. if they just showed the cinematic trailer with a nice big “UNCHARTED 2: Among Theives” before the trailer, then a FRAKING MASSIVE “EXCLUSIVELY ON PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” after. easy.
SCEE: sort it out.

oh and BTW “Mission Impossible 2, Hunt for Red October and Beverly Hills Cop”?
1, Who are U2′s target audience?
2, What stuff will they be watching on TV?
3, What’s our budget?
4, How can we get this really, really wrong?
this seems to be how the marketing guys think. it wouldn’t surprise me if there was a 5 and it said “Has anyone figured out we work for Microsoft?”

Why is that lemon of a narrator talking over the game? Uncharted 2 is a game that speaks for itself, should have simply edited one of Naughty Dog’s trailers and run with that instead…
Also, you have to laugh at some of the european grumbling about a UK Only competition, anyone for irony?

Well thanks to Royal Mail my LCE copy from Game arrived in the post this morning!!! Either Game posted it out yesterday because of demand or they were expecting it to take longer with the stikes, but either way I’m not complaining!
That’s the second time a game has been delivered to me in under 24 hours from despatch by Royal Mail, last one was FIFA10 from Tesco.com, ordered lunchtime Friday – delivered Saturday morning!
