Sony Ericsson launches the Aino today, the first handset from Sony Ericsson to feature Remote Play which enables users to seamlessly access and control their PS3 media content anywhere, anytime using Remote Play with PS3 on Aino. We talked to Alex Cardon, Marketing manager at Sony Ericsson to find what benefits PS3 owners can expect.
What can a consumer do with their PS3 via Aino?
Using an Aino, users can:
- turn a PS3 on and off
- browse and control the XMB user interface
- access the internet and any DRM free media content saved on the hard drive
- sign in to the PS3 network and message friends
- shop for items in the PS3 store
- watch and record live television using PlayTV
Is it easy to set up the Aino to work alongside a PS3?
Setting up the Aino to synchronise with a PS3 is easy. Simply register Aino on the Remote Play settings of a PS3 and an eight digit code will be sent to the handset for verification. Input this into Aino and it will automatically connect to the PS3. If you connect through an internet router and find it doesn’t work, you might need to change your router settings. You will need to check the router I/M and the PS3 on-line I/M.
How do I control my PS3?
Once the Aino and PS3 are connected, you can control all the media content on your PS3 through the mobile handset. It’s very intuitive with Aino replicating the buttons of a PS3 controller on its unique touch user interface. For example “0” for O, “8” for ∆, making it quick and easy to control content from the handset.
What key features on Aino accommodate Remote Play?
Aino is designed to work seamlessly with Remote Play and includes the following features to accommodate this:
- 3 inch TFT display
- WiFi DLNA certification
- 3G HSPA
Alex is here with us in the office today and will be responding to comments, so let us know if you have any questions for him to answer.

£400?!?!?!?!
ARE YOU OUTTA YA MINDS?!?!?!
THE PHONES SOUND EPIC BUT NOT 400 QUID!
I may as well buy 2 DualShock 3 Controllers, ALL of the PS3 Exclusives cumin out this year!, Official PlayStation Bluetooth Headset, A LOT of PS Home Content and oh yh a PS3 SLIM!
Don’t say you can’t buy that under £400 quid coz YOU CAN!!
At Amazon, they’re selling a PS3 Slim with a DualShock 3 Controller and ANY three PS3 Games of your choice from the site, I suspect they have to be £40 or less, NONE over 40! lool = P
Plus I can get a PS Eye for say £9.99! (ALL HAIL EBAY FOR MY PS3 EQUIPMENT)!!!

I’ve been waiting for this phone to come out ever since it was first announced, and I mean long before it was announced here in the PlayStation Blog. As a PS3 owner who has to commute regularly to work and uni, this phone is ideal for me to be able to access all my media from anywhere I go.
On top of that, I’ve been using the same old Samsung D500 for nearly 4 years so I desperately needed a new phone anyway. Despite being capable to afford a contract I resisted the tempations of Blackberries and iPhones. So it would be an understatement to say I’m ecstatic that the Aino is finally here and I’ll be making a trip to an o2 store very soon to pick this baby up (coz I saw it on o2′s catalogue).
That said, even though I’m almost certain to get this phone, I still have a few questions, so here they are-
1) Does the Aino come with a Twitter app?
2) Does it feature any app to access internet radio, like ShoutCast?
3) Does it feature any sort of app store?
3) Does it have any built-in music store? If yes, which is it?
4) Will it support any PSN games or ‘Minis’ in the future?
Thank you and I’d appreciate your answers.

I would’ve upgraded to this phone but Vodafone didn’t have it on their website so I went with the Satio. Would be nice if I could install Remote Play on it though.

I would like a PSP phone. More and more people go with the iPhone which is equally, if not more powerfull than the PSP. Sony should open up the PSP Plattform like Apple did and create a PSP Phone with touchscreen, apps, GPS, camera etc. that would be an instant hit instead of the PSP go flop. I don’t want to carry 1000 devices in my pocket, i want a phone that can do anything and that is currently the iPhones/Androids, Symbian and WinMo Phones.

Is this phone available in the United States of America? And if you what companies have them? If not, will the Aino be released in the US?

I find my PS3 when using a PSP and remote play frequently unchecks the allow “Enable Remote Start via the Internet” setting on my PS3. Making remote play un-usable far too many times unless I manually re enable this checkbox on my PS3. Kind of defeats the point if your away from your PS3 for days, weeks or months. Reading the forums this happens to many others too.
So my question is, what have you done ( if anything ) to rectify this issue on the Aino? Else it’s Eh-no for me!

Why can’t you just make a Sony phone and turn it into a new PSP?

Posted on 13 October, 2009 at 10:20 pm by MARKix
PS. Just seen it on carphonewarehouse.com.
£399.95 pay as you go.
or
£35 per month minimum, min 18 month contract.
That’s me Eh-no, Hey-no, Aino whatever then!

Nice as Sony Ericsson OS phones are (and they’re seriously nice as far as Java phones go) my next upgrade’s going to run Android. Are there any plans to provide this sort of functionality on the SE Rachel?

I already own an iPhone 3GS. This phone looks cool and all, but the fact that it’s able to message friends on the PS Network makes me a bit upset. How come we’re not already able to do this on PlayStation.com?

Hi, so can I get this straight…you can or can’t stream movies from the PS3 to the phone? If you can, what codecs are available? I have quite a few movies on my PS3 that I’d like to be able to play whilst on the move. Cheers.

Any chance you could stop ignoring the iPhone questions???
How about saying if there any plans for an iPhone app etc?
Sony could sell an iPhone app for £20, £30, £40+ and a lot of PS3 owners would go for it.
If people already have an iPhone then they arnt going to buy a Sony Ericsson phone anyway.
And the comment about touch screens not working with remote play, that has to be a laugh doesn’t it? im a programmer and im pretty sure anything that acts as an input device can be programmed.
PSP phone, no chance, Sony is all over the place as a company, the departments dont co-operate and interact with each other very well, i was amazed when SE announced the Aino, maybe its a sign of better things to come from Sony….

I bought the phone unlocked here in the USA from CTINYC. I have to tell you I absolutely love it. I went to Tmobile to get a flexpay acct and sim card and a smartphone plan and its frickin sweet. The only though Tmobile does NOT have 3G with this phone as opposed to ATT. That said, I clicked the setting in the phone to get the MMS and the INternet to work and it synched with SOny Ericsson to get the settings right. I can now do text, MMS and Internet (Edge).
Everything else works on the phone and its frickin fantastic. I did change the SOny Ericsson page to read UK so I can keep up with the phone support etc. The USA Sony Ericsson page doesnt have the phone in there so you have to look at the UK page.

I hope that the remote play function will appear on Android with the release of the Experia X3 “Rachel”… I’m very interested in an android phone.
I’m not interested in an iPhone as it’s locked down and only any use if you’re happy for Apple to take control of your media with iTunes.
As far as using 3G instead of wifi is concerned, the only other option would be to use a PSP and bluetooth tethering to a regular phone. I’ve been considering getting a second-hand PSP for this.
PlayTV on PS3 is a fantastic product, so please please please Sony, please widen the facility to other’s.
