Hello all – you’re all lucky people this week; you get a double dose of me (hooray I hear you cry)!
Following on from the post on the blog last week detailing the new PSN Cards, it made sense to us to compile some of our best loved content available on the PlayStation Store that may have passed you by – and being the kind, caring, and considerate person I am, I’m here to guide you through that content
I’m pleased to say that we now have over 130 games for your PS3 available via the store; and that number covers a wide range of genres, well known titles, smaller self published titles and a vast amount of protagonists to play as. From faceless blocks, to ships of differing guises blasting though waves of enemies, via ‘boy’ and his ability to eat everything around him (including his own tail), a Persian prince who has been given a new lick of paint, and soil living creatures with a crazy arsenal of weaponry, I think gaming on the PSN is looking like a veritable feast of goodness!
There are many great titles that deserve to be mentioned, but I don’t have the space to list them all (and you probably don’t have the patience to read them all) – so here’s a mere snippet, a taster if you will, of what you may have missed in previous updates.
For Your PS3
War should definitely not be glorified, however, when a multiplayer game looks this good it’s hard not to resist getting online and jumping into the trenches and taking the fight to the enemy guns a blazing! With a range of weaponry and vehicles to fight with, this is a great opportunity to challenge your friends to some brutal online action (made less brutal by the fantastic scenery and ever shining sun) and claim some bragging rights.
Flower is just as much an experience as it is a game, by using the sixaxis motion controls you glide with the wind collecting flower petals as you go. Peaceful, relaxing, and sometimes chaotic, this game is a unique demonstration of beautiful graphics and freedom, where you can complete each levels aims, and find the mysteries, or you can simply explore and float around to your heart’s desire.
Take control of Bruce and survive wave after wave of the zombie onslaught. The key to victory is linking massive combos, and utilising the various weapons scattered about the levels to ensure your success. Baseball bats, shotguns, lawnmowers and chainsaws are some of the tools for your victory, but there is also the use of fire to work with too! Fire makes the zombies faster and more dangerous, but also leads to better pickups and much higher scores; therefore, you need to manage the flaming zombies to master this quirky game.
Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Commander’s Challenge
For the RTS fans out there this game is a great choice – this standalone game from the Red Alert 3 world sets you 50 unique challenges to work through in order to lay claim to being a world class commander. It’s not often you’ll get to test you wits against Ric Flair (well actually he’s playing Commander Hill) so take the fight to him, and various other commanders, with a range of troops, including new ones such as the Giga Fortress, Desolator, and Cryo Legionnaire.
Take a thief, knight and magician, a magical trinket that binds them all together, and you’ll get the premise for Trine. Combine the talents of these three ‘heroes’, who all have different progressive skills, to discover hidden treasures, solve physics based puzzles, and battle various enemies. This is a stunning game which uses a physics based engine that ensures the game plays out with true physics based interactions, and it’s also a lot of fun to boot!
Others to try: Shatter, Outrun Online Arcade, PixelJunk Eden, Prince of Persia Classic, Ratchet & Clank: Quest For Booty, Worms.
As for the PSP, we have over 140 full games available at the moment on the store, and that number will be rising as we release more content each week, with more brand new releases coinciding with the retail release, as well as getting more legacy titles onto the store as the weeks roll by.
For Your PSP
The Forest Defender is back, only this time he’s portable. The game mechanic is the same, as the Forest Defender you need to save your offspring from the hordes of monsters; however this version brings with it new weapon towers, a new island, new music and a new mode. That’s not all, once you feel like you’ve mastered the single player modes, you can join a friend online and fight together in Co-op.
What needs to be said about our favourite god of war Kratos that hasn’t been said already? He’s the epitome of bad-ass, and you wouldn’t argue with him over the remote control that’s for sure, let alone trap Helios the sun god in the Underworld and risk the wrath of Kratos coming along to free him. Well that’s what has gone and happened, so join Kratos in this epic adventure and slay many a mythical beast in the process.
Pon-pon-pata-pon. Seriously, once you’ve played this game for more than a few minutes, you won’t be able to get the rhythms out of your head. Control the Patapon tribe with the ‘sacred drums’ by keeping a steady beat and you’ll excel in battle. However, if you lose the beat, don’t expect your tribe to pay much attention anymore. This game is a true test of rhythm, but is also a very unique take on the strategy genre. Pata-pata-pon-pon.
Another title that really needs little by way of an introduction, you should know the drill by now; start with a low ranked car, drive some races, win some cash, get a better car and start entering more challenging races, until you rise to the very top of the circuit. With over 800 cars available, and 35 tracks to test your skills on, combined with the glossy sheen of the Gran Turismo franchise, this is a great racing game to take with you whilst on the move.
Build your mental muscles with this portable version of the quiz show Buzz! You can test your wits in the Solo Quiz Challenge, or host your own six player quizzes and play with your friends on the same console. With over 3000 questions, it’ll take some doing to find all the answers, and will also stop your family cheating by memorising all the answers off the back of the cards (Trivial Pursuit will never be the same again, thanks Dad!).
Others to try: Fate/Unlimited Codes, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Numblast, Sega Mega Drive Collection, WipEout Pulse.
Finally, as a sneak peek into tomorrow’s update, I can say that Ratchet & Clank will be joining you via the medium of a dynamic theme, and as an added bonus, you can check out the video below:
It’s impossible to do justice to every single title on the store at present in one blog post, and that’s where you all come in; what are your favourite titles available via the store? Discuss your favourites in the comments below, and let me know your thoughts.

For those looking for RPG’s (besides FFVII of course) on the PSP, I’ll throw in Riviera as an alternative. I paid £20 to import that from the US and is one of the more reasonably priced games on the store, especially for a game that must have had a limited print run here. The game itself is good and something different from all the flashy graphics you see nowadays.
It’s £13.99 on the store and I was happy with the £20 I paid for it on import. Well worth a look if you like something different.
Crush is also worthy of a go at £11.99 (that has tempted me a few times) and Numblast is a cheap puzzle game at £3.99 but ultimately rewarding if it hooks you. Finally, get Everybody’s Golf 2 for the £9.99 asking price while there’s still time.
If none of that takes your fancy, you can always go through the selection of demos instead. If you do a search on the store for “demo”, you should get most of them. I would also recommend Patapon 2 instead of Patapon for the sheer amount of extra content the sequel adds.
I’ll shut up now because otherwise Mike will be wondering who I am

Yes, Mike, now look at the American PlayStation Store.

Grass is always greener isn’t it – it’s funny to read comments from US readers on their blog moaning about things we get that they don’t too.

Hiya Mike,
Yeah the US store really shows up the EU one. I own several PSN titles, pretty much the obvious ones…Wipeout HD + expansion, Flower, FF7, Shatter, Stardust + expansion, Captain Commando and Pain (in retail format). I’d be forcing myself to buy some of the other games on the store as there either overpriced (compared to Live) or just plain aren’t that exciting.
Its something which Sony really need to work on imo, don’t get me wrong I love my PS3 and its the machine which really gets played at the moment but I find it hard to spend money on PSN store where as on Live there are just so many great titles and they get it right in that its not so regionalised compared to Sony store.
Saw a story the other day as well saying that the average age of gamers is late twenties to early thirties, with that in mind Sony should be pushing more appropriate titles in their special offers not A Bugs Life, Hercules and the Little Mermaid games which weren’t all that great the first time round.

LOL It’s kinda sad that we don’t get that much content.
Someone needs to get fired @ SCEE.
Bring in some fresh blood.
Bring in someone who can get things done & on time.

ironic title much?
i can list some titles we’ve missed out on.
tomb raider 1,2 and 3, silent hill, most people did, mgs1, zombie apocolypse, critter crunch, switchball and namco museum to name a few.
i’ve been looking for blood omen for years but couldn’t find a copy, i see the us store has it, will we see it? knowing scee i really doubt it.
yeah i know you’ll say it’s up to the publishers, but do scee ever actually go to the publishers to get their games on the store?
does scee ever actively seek out games content?
because it doesn’t seem that way.
will we get the uncharted motion comic this week?
sounds like it’s going to be on the us video store which means without downloading a copy from some website it will be impossible to get outside the us.
putting english only content out obviously isn’t a problem for scee any more so you have no excuses left.

This wasn’t a list of content we haven’t got Hazel – it was for content that actually HAD been released.
Without you knowing our business model you can’t really comment with knowledge on why publishers cannot be forced to give us content. Believe me if it was as simple as giving the publishers a list of content and saying ‘give us this’ do you really think we’d miss out on purpose? The answer is no. Not only am I passionate about the store and getting as much content on it as possible, I am a very passionate gamer, so from both aspects I WANT to see great quality content released every week.

I know this is a bit off subject, but any news of when the video service comes to Europe in the store. I heard before it was November but there hasn‘t been a buzz about it yet what with Sony normally being a leeky bucket and all… I can‘t wait to download some hi-res movies and hopefully (fingers crossed) TV shows like in the US, Breaking Bad, Dexter etc…

i know what the article was about, but given the title i felt compelled to make a comment.
yes, it was a bit petty, but if it gets the point across.
and no, i don’t know all the ins and outs of scee’s business but i think i know enough to know there’s a huge gulf between forcing somebody to do something and actively pursuing them to get them to do it.
does scee actively pursues ps1, ps3 and psp content?
or does scee passively wait for content to come to them? and them take their time doing QA on it.
much as i criticise, i don’t think scee deliberately misses out on content, though there have been times i’ve began to wonder, but i do believe that scee doesn’t do enough to get the content.
and this was not an attack on you mike, you might notice i’ve stopped saying you when referring to scee, if i’m talking about you, you’ll know it.
in actual fact you seem to be one of the few passionate people in scee, certainly the only person on the blog who actively engages with us, the fans/customers.
but the rest of scee don’t seem to care, maybe there is the odd person here and there who cares but there is an air of apathy surrounding scee.

It did get the point across…
The teams here do try and get as much content as possible, and yes at times we can’t publish content in Europe for varying reasons – usually legal issues that cannot be resolved for one reason or another (and I do hate to trot this out) but these are the barriers that we have to work with. Hopefully we can make some headway in knocking these down though.
I know it’s not an attack on me, if it seemed I took any personal offence then that was not the case – if I were able to enter the store via some kind of matrix type effect and make everything available, then we’d all be very happy
Until that is possible, I’ll do what I can to raise the service we on the store provide you all.

Sorry to drift but being as playmartelli has brought up the topic of the video store… PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you ask the department responsible to get the pricing right! I will part with my £ to rent films if they are reasonably priced but if they ask top whack, it’s not gonna happen.

Hate to be so negative all the time, but there are still huge gaps in what is on offer as far as downloadable PSP games goes. My Go is largely sitting unused at the moment as the games I was in the middle of aren’t available. It’s nice to know that there are good games on offer, but I’ve pored over the contents of the store many times hoping that something has snuck onto the listings without me noticing.
Thanks for listening though.

I wanted to try Burn Zombie Burn, just to confirm it was right for me, but then found that there wasn’t any demo.
I (wrongly) assumed there would be one, for that kind of game.
Buying blind is only something I do very rarely, so, you lost a sale. I hope Zombie Apocalypse is available soon.
As for Trine, each time I see it on the Store, I just wonder where the justification is, for charging as much (it must be one heck of an experience to command a price in line with that of Wipeout HD! ) and then suspect that, likely enough, that probably isn’t there. Again, a demo would be a great tool for you, there.
I’m looking forward to Critter Crunch, though, so hopefully that joins the ranks amongst the other fun and inventive puzzlers that SCEE has offered, to date.

The only reason anyone might “miss” something on the PlayStation Store is because it is so badly organised. Often new PSN games need to be searched for?
BTW, what part of “we want a Demo section are SCEE to stupid to understand?

Things I nearnly missed: the MAG themes in the first frame of the video! and also is that custom firmware? Dev FW maybe? or is it 3.10? no box, or ticker, its a dynamic theme, so it has to be at least FW 3.0 right!? Am I a genius?
