Hi Guys,
I’m James and I’m really pleased today to finally be able to share with you more information on the Facebook functionality which will soon be available on your PlayStation 3.
Hope you enjoy the video and I’ll speak to you tomorrow morning to feedback on your comments.
- James
Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3′s built-in web browser.
This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.
Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:
- The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
- The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.
I just want to clarify a comment I made to this post yesterday about Cross Game Voice Chat, which seems to have caused some confusion. I can’t confirm if or when Cross Game Voice Chat is coming, but as I said, when I do have some information to share with you, I’ll let you know.

good update guys. even i won’t be using facebook its nice to see free added content to ps3, and the friends list looks a lot nicer too, but as far as more improvements are concerned, having the oppotunity to change your PSN id would be great and would work exceptionally well if it was payed for too, i and many many other people i know would definately chage their PSN id if they had the chance. please sony make it happen.

Great News!
The system gets better with each big update. I especially like Vidzone and the Photo application which works a treat with my camera.
More PS1 games would be nice, but as it’s my Birthday today then a God of War III Demo code would do just nicely….

Awesome new Friends List, thanks.
Great little FW update.
Hoping a Twitter version of this Facebook implementation is on the cards, I would definitely use that one.
PS: I don’t care about cross-game chat

@150
did you even read my post?
What I am saying is that you should not have to quit a game, wait for it to close and then have to click back on the game to start the reloading process – so in effect it is the same as loading a different game.
I am not talking about uninstalling a game, just reloading it from the last save point

I guess this is great for FB Fans and Teenagers, but I don’t see myself using this…I mean who cares which demos I download.
The colourthingy is nice tho, hope to see more customization options in the near future.

Surely its your IP thats causing the Iplayer issue, as the consoles are not regionalised as far as I am aware.
Otherwise ill be buying a UK PS3 next time im over.

This cool, my 360 I use raptr to update Facebook/Twitter with my gaming activity, something the 360 doesnt do, but I bet raptr will be trying to tap into the feeds, auto feeds from PSN is better..I hope they dont over cross so I get raptr updating and PSN updating the same thing on my profile…

I know what you mean taking the “Soft reset” (L1+R1+L2+R2+SELECT+START) out was a bad move, some games aren’t so bad having a “quit to menu” option in the pause menu but not all of them have it.

Hi… I like what has been done with the ‘Photo’ section… will you do it the ‘Music’ section too? As i have over 100 songs on my PS3 and its soo anoying having to scroll through them all, it takes forever, and would be so much easier set up like the photo is now set up.

Cool update. Facebook could definitely be a good way to connect with other PSN members.
-I agree with some earlier comments about Game Status being updated and posted on facebook in a similar way as your friends list on the XMB – “Currently playing..”
-The purchases options seems interesting but something I probably won’t enable.
-I’m interested to see how the Trophy option works.
“Music” need an overhaul for sure. I hope that’s “In Progress” right now.
Custom avatars would be sweet too.
The video shows some browsing speed that I wish I had…damn.
If I could browse that fast, my PS3 would be the center of my entertainment universe.
I’m curious to see what else PSN will integrate with…
Last.fm?
Youtube – for in-game videos/replays, etc?

Sony cant do it all on their own. Open up the platform to other developers, create a free SDK. That way other companies can bring media services and apps on the system. Sony is to slow working on this stuff. But otherwise good update. However, the new UI design is really bad like many said. It does not look like a Sony-Product!

I’m liking the color idea of the friend Boxes
Could there be a way to place clips from films or trailers on our HDD’s on the background like a dynamic theme

James, why do you keep calling it FIRMWARE? It’s name is PS3 System Software! It isn’t a firmware and firmware isn’t its official Sony name anyway. This just generates confusion. Some people think that the PS3 SSW always modifies the logic of some device controllers in the PS3.

Please remove the censorship of text chat, in Spanish censor words as harmless and common words like “hour” or “goodbye”, and is quite frustrating, I hope you have in mind for this because we spoke Spanish (at least) is a nuisance …

I would love cross-game chat to, but I don’t understand why so many people here feel the need to be rude about it. I would be very surprised if not almost everyone at Sony knows that cross-game voice chat is a priority feature for users. And at the same time I would think it is obvious that Sony has not been holding it back just to be annoying.
In other words they must have had challenges implementing it, most likely system resource issues. One likely scenario I could think of it that in order to free enough resources they would have needed to reduce the resource usage of other running services, which is probably a both quite intrusive and time consuming task and thus something that has to be done gradually and with a lot of testing.
Do people here really want cross-game voice chat if the cost is lots of your games doesn’t work at all or increased stability and frame rate issues due to cross-game chat fighting with games over resources?
So guys, keep up the pressure by requesting this, but please stop the juvenile insults and insinuations, they just pollute the website and doesn’t help anyone.

It feels better to surf the net with the latest Internet Explorer with a ten year old entry-level PC (quite irritating but still better) that it is with the PS3. Any update on this front ?

The facebook integration is useless, you still have to open a web browser, which lets face it, is awful on the PS3. Why not integrate it inot the XMB itself, like Xbox Live has done on their dashboard! Integrating it into the XMB would be soo much better than the web browser. On Xbox LIVE it allows you to leave comments, update your status etc from the dashboard without the need for an web browser, why can’t PS3 do that with PSN??????
And the friends list needs a serious update guys, why aren’t you looking at this guys work for reference?
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=124148306403
This is way, waaaaaayyyyyyy better, adding the ability to see your friends home avatar as well as the artwork for the game they are playing on their profile page or friends list would be a fantastic bonus as well IMO.
And last but not least, where the hell are cross game invites and cross game chat!!!! i thot they were coming in this nw update, stop telling us it’s definately coming and tell us why its not here yet!

I look forward to the colour change and I might be interested in the facebook functionality, I will give it a try. I have to say though, I am waiting on those new avatars and cross game voice chat(I’d be complete with this one feature). At the minute I can’t get my trophies to sync up which is jolly annoying, keeps getting an error. Anyway, I don;t want to sound like the many annoying moany gits that plague this site, always demanding more because I’ve seen the progress the PS3 has made since launch. I’m very pleased to see the evolution of this console and hope that it continues as it goes along. Good work sony.

Well.
Maybe a facebook account may have to be open.
A lot of ranting about X game chat.
Would it not be better to have In-game Skype as a more productive application.
Being able to have this should not be hard to implement. Should it?
Would be a new addition to “It does everything” ad campaign.
Play HD games
Watch HD movies(soon a movie store)
Listen to music.
Browse the internet.
Now Facebook.
With Skype intergration then it would b,
And Talk to ANY other PS3 user, PC user, Skype enabled Phones……
Now “It does everything”

I’m not a big user of Facebook, though I do have an account… and this is a nice feature.
I hope this is another step towards Sony opening up the PS3 stats data so that we can make use of 3rd-party sites and features such as Raptr.com. I personally would rather have that than cross-game chat, which for me is an irrelevant feature that I would never use.
And absolutely brilliant news about the Friends list. Only having the box around the selected friend is excellent, and how it should have been from the beginning. It shows that Sony do actually listen to what their customers want.

nice little update look forward to it, but lets not forget CROSS VOICE CHAT & CROSS INVITES is what we need not just the cross chat so please SCE we have been waiting 3 years i think this is long enough time to be waiting for these features.
thanks for the efforts to bring us new things its much appreciated.

why, as the owner of this console can i not choose which firmware to run without being effectively banned from going online or to the PSN Store? it’s like not being able to use the internets if you don’t upgrade to Windows 7 on your PC.

It’s cool that you can change colour of your profile on the friends list, but it’s not enough!!! You should be able to buy on ps store some backrounds (I’d love Uncharted one) to decorate your profile. That would be awesome and very profitable

Any word on being able to remove the bar from the top right (The bit with the clock and number of friends online)? It looks really messy, also still waiting on the theme that makes the text and icons smaller again. In other words, make it look like it was before 3.0

Great but the XMB is still a little too big for my liking. Are the features in the video the only features in the update? Also I’m sure you don’t need reminding how much people want some other social networks on PS3 too
I find that the PS3′s browser loads a bit slow and sometimes pixelates fonts when I zoom in, its in need of an update! Thanks!

This blog needs an edit button! In my other post I meant to say why not remove the boxes completely and replace them with just a line box like the one around the clock. It could be semi-transparent through the colour the user chooses, I find the bubble boxes look cheap and not like the professional PS3 look.

I think it good that you continue to improve the system even if the progress is going to slow.
One thing that could be made a whole lot better is how you connect to you´re friends to play a game online. It´s a mess today. I who have used the system for several years now thinks it complicated, it must be a nightmare to the people who is new to the system.
There really should be a standard system of how you connect to a game. That would make the online experience so much easier and better.
I cannot understand why you get a message when someone invites you to play a game and then you need to start that game and figure out how to get into the game (lobby, server) your friend is playing. Waaaaaaay to complicated. It should be a no brainer to get into a game with your friends!
Instead you should be able to just click a button which says “join” and takes you directly into your friends game (even if you´re not playing that game at the moment) when you receive an invite from a friend. So much easier!
Please make the online system much easier to understand and operate.
