I think it should be made clear in the Blog that the reward for buying the HD version of Angels & Demons will only be the SD version of The Da Vinci Code.
Like most I expected 2 HD movies for the price of one. A little misleading, don’t you think?
Posted on 19 November, 2009 at 4:39 pm by Olga Puzanova
OK yes you get SD version of The Da Vinci code (not HD – we only offer HD rental at this point, HD buy is coming soon!)

the price is a joke, isnt it?! i pay 0,50 € for dvd in my renal-shop behind my house,… and 2,50 € for blu-ray, each day…
this is going in the wrong direction, guys! like the umd-prices within the first years!! i though you wann make some cash, dont you?

WOW you are my favourite person today
ENJOY!
To answer your other question – we will be sending you the voucher for the Da Vinci Code early December. Will keep you posted on exact dates

@ hazel i may jump the gun & said the prices are okay i mean £9 for a SD film, the rent should be bit less i dont know what price i should set it
i do the maths: i go up town, i get the bus, i get a blu-ray film say about £22 & bus fare £2.60p so that £25.20
so it cheaper for me to start at home & i have not got HD telly
so it comes to choice use it or dont.
i be usein it i to like tv shows not british 1s we get that on bbc & itv etc for free. apart from the tv licence but its for all uk ppl
but tv shows like family guy etc not shown on british telly that i like.
Ps the videostore is now LIVE

I have issue with the price, i expected it to be cheaper! How about a subscription service like online rental where you can rent as many movies for a montly fee? I would be very happy to pay for that!

I’d rather yank out my eyeballs and gnaw at the optic nerves with my teeth than watch Transformers: RoTF again.
Super glad about the launch though, I’m hoping there’ll be some less commercial movies on there for me to enjoy.

@ Skookie30, yes you do that if you’re a fool. Or alternatively, you go online to one of the many Blu-ray e-tailers, without needing the bus, and buy the same Blu-ray for £15, and if you shop around probably get a 3 for 2, or a BOGOF, or some other internet discount. Then have it turn up at your door the next day. Or go to a Supermarket if they have good deals.
Only fools and rich people pay £25-30 for a Blu-ray at HMV, I would never pay that for one film just like I would never walk into somewhere like GAME and pay £50-55 for a game that can be had for £25 in other stores, or £35 online.
This goes back to the crux of the issue with monopolised digital distribution – they live in a World where they think everyone pays RRP, but that is not the case. Yes £3.50 would be a reasonable rental if the cheapest you could buy it on Blu-ray for was £25-30, but is it reasonable if I can get the Blu-ray, sometimes with it’s own digital copy, for £7.50? No, of course it isn’t! Just like £6.99 to buy an SD film might be good if DVD’s cost £20, but they don’t some DVD’s sell for £3.99 nowadays…
It’s no wonder piracy is so rife online.

I would only start using this service if they introduced NetFlix style subscriptions, e.g. £8.99 a month for unlimited rentals or something similar. Or just reduced the prices, an SD rental of a film should be no more than £1.49, TV shows no more than 79p…
Movie Studios can moan all they like about piracy and lost revenues and the need to cover their costs. But at the end of the day people pirate films because they’re not prepared to pay nearly a fiver for a 24 hour download. Reduced digital pricing = reduced piracy.
(For the record, I’ve never pirated anyting personally, but I know people that do illegally download for exactly that reason…)

Regarding the below, any idea when we receive the code once we’ve registered our new PS3?
“And if you are new to PlayStation we don’t want you to miss out! Just register your new console on PlayStation Network between November 19 and 30 and we will send you a voucher for Transformers movie. Yep, you can own Megan Fox in HD on your PS3 forever! “

To those moaning about launch Countries, a quick look at hardware sales (courtesy of VGChartz) makes it plain to see why SCEE start with the Countries they do. People can moan all they like, but at the end of the it’s all about which Countries have the largest userbase and which have the potential to drive new sales the most (the UK sold 10.5M PS2′s and the other 3 a further 20.5M – so lot’s of room to grow PS3 sales).
Console PS3
UK – 2.5M
France – 1.7M
Spain – 1.4M
Germany – 1.4M
Italy – 1.1M
Scandinavia – 0.7M
Australia – 0.6M
Other Europe – 1.9M
Just those 4 countries account for 60% of the SCEE PS3 userbase, it’s much easier to launch something like this in 4 ‘big’ Countries rather than 40 Countries, so why wouldn’t you make sure the MAJORITY of your userbase can access it first? Number of Countries is irrelevant.
If you look at VidZone as another example that now covers 83%+ of the SCEE userbase (as the Video Store probably will by next year) – so I’m sorry to Poland and Greece etc but in the grand scheme of things you’re really not a priority from a business standpoint. Complaining about it in the blog won’t increase your Country’s importance – buying PS3′s will…

£3.49 for an SD rental of a recent film, seriously? I pay less to see them at the cinemas on an orange wednesday.
I expected that price for a HD rental, and £2.50 max for an SD rental (of recent films, older films should be no more than £2).
175
Posted on 19 November, 2009 at 11:16 am by HazelAM
if you’ve got a cineworld near you just get an unlimited pass, 13 quid a month and see as many films as you want.

[To add to my post]
Good job SCEE anyway, there are a lot of films on there and at least the option is available now
I didn’t want to be all negative in my previous post but its just a bit more expensive than I would’ve liked and unfortunately just over impulse buy price for me, so I can’t really see myself using it.

Question to Sony.
I have a Jap PS3, which I bought out in Tokyo many moons ago. I was wondering if the video service will work on it after the update. Obviously its in the UK now and I only have a EU account.

Could you tell us if this is coming to Ireland this year/soon/the far future?
Please respond, I have got no word from anyone yet. The original press release said Ireland will be obtaining this service, yet I don’t seem to have it in the store…
Thanks!

+1 for the rest of Europe.
I’ve been waiting for some easy way to rent movies I don’t wanna own on DVD and am too lazy to go watch in theaters for a while. I hope you can bring this feature for the rest of us as well, especially since NetFlix doesn’t like us either. ;P

@apnomis
I think you’re right. Sony should keep on showing interest only to the 4 main European countries.
I don’t even understand why Sony even care about trying to sell their products in Scandinavia, Poland or Portugal.
Sony shouldn’t even bother developing the video store in Sweden.
We already have a VOD service that actually works very well through the web browser: http://www.headweb.com .

I was hoping to get more than one language as an option… Seriously, for almost €2 less I can rent movies and watch them in their original language. The PS video store has failed.

Why there is not just one PSN for whole Europe? do they have different stores for Texas or California in US? NO! there is one Europe with “just” a different currency what shouldn’t be a problem if we all pay with the card. And in video store will be the same movies which already exist on DVD or Blu-ray so there has to be files with subtitles somewhere. . . . so where is the problem? what we are waiting for if everything is available?

There are Zero films to buy in HD, repeat 0. Is that right or am I looking in the wrong place. 149 titles to rent in HD for between £3.49 and £4.49 but none to buy in HD.
Also how come you are giving away Transformers RoTF but it is not listed in the store to buy or rent?

Hi,
I’m using the PSN in France and this is great news that the Video store is coming into the PSN.
However, I’ve just looked at it and I’m so disappointed. As every VOD service (all consoles or set top box), you don’t offer the choice to the customer to rent/buy the movie in ENGLISH! All the titles are in French… Yes, I live in France but I’d rather prefer to watch my movies/TV shows in English…
Plus, the movies are not even available in dolby digital 5.1!
So disappointed by the service and I was really eager to use it…
Hope this will change…

“I think Sony should have made sure the whole of SCEE had the blessed zone BEFORE launching these apparently overprized(sic) movies.”
the “big four” account for 2/3 of all PS3 hardware sales in europe (and more than 70% of all software sales). setting up a digital videostore in europe is not that simple (xblm video marketplace and itunes video store aren’t widely available in europe either), because of the myriad of film licensing and distribution deals that exist. certain countries are considered key markets. i know that puts a lot of people’s nose out of joint, but all of these companies are in business to make money, and they will target the biggest markets first even if it disgruntles some of their customers. they’re not going to wait and lose even more market share in its biggest user base..

I couldn’t agree more with Fonou. Vive la VO!
No matter what the language, I *always* watch my movies in their original language. Call me annoying, but I just can’t stand dubbed films. Please give us the option!
I was eagerly looking forward to the video store, but in its current state, it’s useless to me… A real shame.

fcp10, I think you missed the point. What brihar was saying was Scandinavia (which Sweden belongs to), Portugal and Poland should get the services just like the other countries.
I have to agree with (or at least understand) Apnomis point. For as much as we want the services, we will only get them if it makes comercial sense to Sony (or any other service from any other company).
Also, fellow Portuguese, VidZone was announced for Portugal next week. You could at least read the blog

hmm.. so some HD rentals are actually £4.49. what a bargain, not. plus they seem to be 6gb-9gb from what i can tell.. that’s a 12 hour download for me. prices of SD to own seems to vary between studio and how recent the movie is. £6.99 (ok, i guess) to £11.99 (for a few quid more i could buy it on blu-ray!).
but good grief, what is wrong with the previews?. they are ridiculously slow. it took about 15 minutes for me to get a 2 minute preview. i know i don’t have the best broadand speed around, but it is more than good enough to stream SD in realtime! first day teething trouble? insufficient bandwidth capacity for demand?
