Yeah thanks for answering all of the irish users about if we are getting the vid store too. A simple yes or no would have been good instead of finding out from people who seem to really enjoy the service. When yous decided to announce at gamescon that the store would be heading to ireland in november. Was that only to pull our legs. Well ain’t I very stupid. I’ve been fooled again into buying PSN cards for a service we are excluded from. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice and shame on me.

why are the latest films like star trek and wolverine not available to rent but only to buy . very stupid if this is way scee are gonna do video store , forcing the 12 dvds on people with no option to rent latest releases . wont be using it if thats the case

Do both or either SD and HD versions have 5.1 surround sound? If not then why not buy the DVD with full 5.1 (for less money even)?

Eh… Ireland? Weren’t we told that Ireland would be getting it too.

£9+ for sd films? are you having a laugh or what, you can buy 2 or more at that price from hmv or online shops and you get a nice box and can keep it forever, its just like the psp games, your chargeing more than the shops do, i think the rentals are fairly priced and convenient however i wont use the service out of princable of the overpriced other stuff.
Also wrong section and all. but my wipeout hd now has adverts in it that wernt there when i brought it, thats damn cheeky! so i wont be buying anything of the games store either from now on.
Just because your last place this gen and looseing money doesnt mean you should take it out on your loyal customers so blatently

Once again the benelux is left out,It’s a shame for Sony that Microsoft has beat them to the punch with their Xboxzune in the Netherlands. Why is it so hard for Sony?!!!Very dissepointing again!!!

can u explain how it works if u buy lots of films off store if ur ps3 was to break your basically losing everything coz even if you back up it doesnt let u watch films on any other console . this isnt right and needs sorted out as people could lose hundreds of pounds buying then console fails and u need to buy everything again

OMG this service FAILS so hard it’s not even funny! I was looking forward to this service but it’s a HUGE disappointment – if you get many users I will be amazed!
Were you high when you decided it was a good idea to charge £12(!!!) to own a SD compressed copy of a new release film with a TWO-CHANNEL(!) audio track? Last time I watched a movie in stereo it was on VHS, and the last time I paid £12 for one it was on Blu-ray! Even the HD rental versions, which are a frankly outrageous £4.50, only have 2 channel audio! And the SD rentals are £3.50, just to round of the collection of overpriced and under spec’ed options.
Your competitor has just launched instant-on 1080p streaming with 5.1 SURROUND SOUND and your response is to offer inferior quality films for a more expensive price? Right, because that makes good business sense… *face palm*

Bitter dissappointment!! Prices are scandalous! £4.49 for a HD rental??? If that’s not pathetic, £11.99 to own a SD movie! I was looking forward to this service, but looks like I will never be using it. You can’t even buy any HD movies, only rent, although if they’re charging £11.99 for SD, I don’t want to know how much they would charge to own a HD movie. If there ever was a more appropriate time to use the following overrated comment it would be now… EPIC FAIL!!

I have to agree with Apnomis above – for £12 I would expect 5.1 sound! Little bit embarrasing Sony!
Id also like to see an iTunes style pricing model. People will not pay £12 for a digital copy when they can own a Bluray for less money. Apple realised that people wouldnt pay £12 for an album of music in digital format so they released them at £7.99 to give an incentive. It should be exactly the same with video on demand. Offer us an incentive to go digital rather than giving us the same prices as physical versions (at lower quality!)
214
Posted on 19 November, 2009 at 7:21 pm by greekgoddj
well it looks like Apnomis already answered my question, no 5.1. The prices are far FAR to high. I can get SD (DVD) with 5.1 for £2-3!

Stereo ?
This is what I don’t get, Sony as a company has some fantastic products and over the years has been on the front line of innovation in technology, you have award winning TV’s, Cinema amps etc, even the PS3 itself is quite a technological achievement, think about what the company was achieved over the years, the world’s first portable music player, the compact disc, the 3.5″ floppy disc, the Cassette Walkman, the Discman, the list goes on and on, yet here we are in 2009 and your giving us Stereo only movies?, I think the last time I watched movie in stereo was over half a decade ago, what the hell is going on ?, why is it your company can do great hardware but anything to do with software is inherently flawed ?

Stereo? Seriously.
Nevermind, I’m not going to even bother asking about the existence of DRM if it’s stereo.

alrdy knew we weren’t getting it this year all the small non important countries getting it 2010 sony doesen’t really care about us because, we bring in less money it’s the same with everything sony releases look at the PSN store it sucks ass hardly anything good gets ever released, i just hate it that sony lies about dates they always say europe getting vidstore 2009 while they meant 2 say is only 4 countries getting it 2009 the rest get stuffed and wait till 2010.

It’s cool
I just have one thing to add: won’t you give the chance to see the subtitled version of foreign movies (I’m talking from Spain). I mean, clearly there’s a way to have two audios (as some movies have Spanish 5.1 and Spanish 2.0), so why don’t put the (usually) English version and some optional subtitles?
Is this just at first, or it will be for too long like that?
“The Shining” Spanish dubbed version is quite horrible, so it’s ridiculous to watch it in HD and hearing a UnderSD dubbed version, good sound but bad acting.
Thx

Glad to see that im not the only one who is dissapointed. That Videostore is the biggest Fail i´ve ever seen. Come on… the Prices (in Germany and UK) a Big Joke! Example: Drag me to Hell 14,99 Euro SD, Stereo <– that so 1980s . I bought this Movie one minute ago at Amazon.de on Blu-Ray for 11 Euro. ANY QUESTIONS? Oh i forgot, you wrote “you can enjoy Megan Fox in HD” <- I think not!
Look at the US Video Store: Fair Prices, huge selection and afaik a lot Movies has 5.1.

I wanted to buy movies but they cost far far too much, i mean i could buy 3 movies on UMD for £10 from a store. I was looking forward to this massively gutted because of the great movies on there but they cost too much.

Can i make a GUI suggestion.
much like the frequently requested and all the time ignored demo’s section for the games section. i would request a similer nice simple but non confusing option for rental’s
its nice putting them all in one area but here was me thinking i could rent star trek. and nope purchase only. several movies that i thought i could rent were to own only. so could you be so kind as to maybe separate the sections. so i can have a to own, and a to rent section saves me trolling through getting excited about movies i cant actually rent.

I need to update this entry to include reference to the EU Video Store – prices are shockingly ridiculous, even by SCEE’s standards.
And 2ch stereo only?! What a very bad joke.

To those complaining about prices, they’re the same for the most part as iTunes. To get an HD rental on iTunes (for which you need an Apple TV of course) costs £4.50. To buy (only in SD, unless you’re in the US, where iTunes has a small selection of movies to buy in HD) then it’s £10.99.
iTunes does have special offers of course, and the catalogue is pretty huge now, but it’s been going for years. The new PS3 video service (well, new for us Europeans anyway, it’s ancient news for those in the US) is already much better in terms of depth of content than the 360′s Zune Marketplace. That said, the 360 does at least offer most films in 1080p with 5.1 audio…

I’ve had my PS3 since launch… video store and iview seem to be talked about a lot but still not on the AU PS3s.
Getting a bit tired of seeing everyone else get them (even NZ got their version of iview before Aus).
Well at least we had the (naff) music video clips (not Vidzone)before everyone else… gr8 NOT!
Come on Sony, come on Aus Govt, come on ABC get it together!
Good job the games are good… I don’t want to be tempted by the dark side!

This looks great, but currently I wont be buying or renting anything as usual, Sony hasnt learnt that A, not all people that live in a country in Europe are from that country originally and B, some people just want the original version of films and games.
I cant even select the language for my PSN account, yes I speak Spanish, but I want it in English, please please please sort this out!!

By the way Sony, around 70% of Broadcasts on Digital terestrial TV in spain are now broadcast in at least dual and sometimes tripple languages.
This enables people to watch in Spanish, catalan and English. Choice of Language should be available for films and games too.
Why do you think the UK sells so many games, apart from the exchange rate?

Really pleased that the films are finally here. Well done Sony.
Will films that are currently buy only (Star Trek I am looking at you
) ever be rental as well. I like the idea of renting stuff and will probably do this often. If I like a movie though I would rather have the media in my hands as it is much more flexible!
Look forward to hearing your response, I am really keen to watch Star Trek

While I am happy that the Video Store is finally here, I believe that once again Sony EU you have shot yourselves in the foot.
It’s been over a year since the Americans got their vid store, why the delay?
It was said that you were tryign to arrange localised content? So where is it all? I see nothing that wouldn’t have been here had you just released the store at the same time as the US one and just given us the same content.
Where’s all the HD content? Star Trek, out now on DVD and Blu-ray. Awesome.
Only available in SD through the Playstation Video Delivery Service. What the hell is going on?
Why aren’t SD, HD and rentals all available for all products from day 1?
Why are we being drip fed this type of content?
Once again, the EU sector is treated like the US sector’s forgotten brother. More PS3s than America in Europe, but we get treated worse.
I like you Sony, I really do. But you are really starting to try my patience.

Well, it’s nice that it finally arrived. But I can’t see how I’d ever use it. It’s competing for my money on the same TV screen against the XBox movie offerings and Virgin’s on-demand movies, and it’s by far the most expensive option. There are movies on there that I could go down to Tesco and *buy* for the price of a rental on the PS3 movie store. Just a bit disappointing.

Im having a few problems with the new store
1st thing – yesterday i couldnt access the store at all. It was no where to be found on the playstation store.
2nd thing – it has now appeared under “videos” on the store (100% certain not there yesterday) and i can view the movies for rent/sale but when i click on them gives the following message – “This content cannot be accessed on your account”.
Oh and when i just went in to double check what the “error” message was again the first time the option to access the video downloads had disappeared. I had to exit and re-enter the store and then I was able to access them again (still getting the same error though)
Im in the Isle of Man which is part of the United Kingdom but I remember myself and a few people from IOM and Jersey/Guernsey having similar problems when vidzone was first released. We were able to download the app but for the first few days we couldnt view any videos.
Olga, could you find out whats going on please.
Thanks

The Service is WAAAAAAAAAAY too expensive! Especially for an SD film that can be picked up for slightly less on DVD with extras.
The prices need a dramatic drop!

Someone will soon start talking when they realise that no one is downloading from this service.
I was really looking forward to downloading some stuff from here, but now I won’t download a thing.
I’m no business person but surely it makes more sense to have reasonable prices and a larger volume of people paying, rather than relying on a few drunk people to download at weekends when quite frankly the most ridiculous of things seems like a good idea.
Can we please have a response from the person in charge of setting prices and formats because you have one or two disgruntled consumers waiting [not so] patiently..

new releases only available to buy is pathetic bt thats the scee way . it should be other way abt rental 1st then buy a week later or heres a thought why nt do what u.s store does and let people rent or buy at same time . this only having new releases to buy at 12 quid is a joke tbh if it doesnt change fast enjoy wasted efforts with little income

they’re so dumb, hancock in SD £11.99 – dvd off play.com £3.99!
we rent 4 blu ray discs a month for £7 some of the HD rentals are £4.50 each !!!
it’s not even funny how far off the mark they are, it’s a shame as loads of people will never use it.

As a big fan of movies and TV shows I was excited about your announcements at Gamescom 2009 in Cologne, and I was totally looking forward to the launch of your video service in Germany. Actually, I expected the perfect addition to my PS3 and PSP, and I even thought it might let me switch from Lovefilm rental service and from purchasing DVDs/Blurays in local shops and amazon.de.
Of course, rental prices could be significantly lower in the PSN video service, OTOH, PSN is more comfortable and faster available to me than my existing sources.
However, what really turns me away: there is only the annoying German dubbed track available. I can’t rent/buy the movies in the original language and with English / German subtitles switched on, like I can do with DVDs and Blurays. I never watch US shows or movies in German television for this, so I spend considerably much for DVD/Blurays.
I think, this lack of original language and subtitles is turning away many other heavy users. Adding this feature to PSN video store, you could get a very profitable target group.
So, I will not buy or rent movies in PSN, except of the original German movies, until you add this feature.

Rented Cold Mountain (wanted a Natalie Portman film) in HD, but haven’t fully download it yet. In terms of file size I went and picked the worst, a 2 and a half hour movie! I’m a little disappointed that we can’t buy HD from the off – I try my best to avoid SD stuff these days – but I’m sure they’ll sort it in the end. Good to see stuff you can’t currently get on Blu-ray atm such as The Exorcist on there too. I think TV series will be a good inclusion to the service.

In your original post you said “Just register your new console on PlayStation Network between November 19 and 30″ but later on you replied to someone with “Anyone who registers for a PSN account using their new PS3s between 19th & 30th November 2009″
So which one is it? Cause I registered the playstation itself on the 19th.
