As you no doubt know, the PlayStation Network Video Store is now live in the UK, France, Germany and Spain – I’m watching Dumb and Dumber on my PS3 as I write this.
So last night, in true SCEE tradition, we had a launch party to celebrate this fantastic addition to PlayStation Store and allow journalists and people from the film industry to try it out. We were lucky enough to have a fantastic venue in London’s House of St. Barnabas, and our events team decked the place out in its own inimitable style. Hopefully, these pictures give you an idea of their fine work.
Once the space filled up we had Mark Hardy, European Product Marketing Director, announce that the Video Store contains more than 2000 films, both HD and SD at launch and that weekly updates will contain at least 50 titles.
With the announcements out of the way, Little Boots arrived and gave a tiny, packed room a lovely acoustic performance on the grand piano. After that, Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac kept the music going until midnight when I got turfed out and a horde of people appeared out of nowhere and started dismantling the party.
I’ve been putting my feet up and watching some films. I’m thinking of watching 300… I mean the film 300, not 300 films. Is it any good?
I’m really sorry, but I won’t be around to answer any of your questions or comments, but I hope this post gives you a good idea of what a PlayStation house party looks like.
James.

It’s a shame that you can only rent HD films, not buy them. Still, I’m looking forward to watching Beetlejuice in HD.

Sorry for not replying as usual – I’m on holiday, escaping the clutches of the internet for a while. Know any good restaurants in Prague?
What can I say other than that every comment on this blog is read and noted, even though we can’t reply to every one.
See you in a few weeks, if you’ll have me.

Hi James,
can u tell me, when the Movies are available in 5.1 Sound. it´s no standard for a service like this that all movies only have stereo sound.
And another thing is, whats interesting me, will we get the possibility to choose languages. because ,thing is, that i really like to watch my movies in English. & i don´t watch them any in German…
synchronisation is almost boring as hell
Thanks
Samarotu

300 is OK, but if you can track down the documetary “Spartans – the last stand of the 300″.
Stero sound? That’s a poor effort Sony. £13 for Star Trek is then remarkably bad value sat next to the 3 Disc bluray with digital copy for £18.

Totally agree with Samarotu, I want to watch the movies in their original language. Only offering the local synchronised version is such a step backward from DVD/Blue-Ray!
It’s a pity. I was really looking forward to the HD video rental service but it is of no use for me yet =(

300 is a cracking film. In fact, as a translation from graphic novel to film it’s quite a decent attempt. I personally prefer Sin City but either way, 300 is definitely worth a watch.
Hey, hows this…
I let you borrow Sin City, 300 and Watchmen sometime – and I get an invite to these ruddy parties eh?
(P.S. Is there an open bar?) XD

@Bear
Who cares if there is an open bar, Little Boots was there :p

I agree with all the above comments. We’ve waited a long time for this service, so thank you and well done Sony for achieving it. However, before I use the service I want:-
1. Cheaper (more competitive) prices. I’m tired of rip-off Britain.
2. 5.1 channel sound on HD films.
3. Ability to purchase HD films.
Until then, thanks but no thanks Sony.

Why didn’t the Republic of Ireland not get the service as we did with the Vidzone?
Must have been a big problem, it was said at one point we were getting with the UK and other countries.

Posted on 20 November, 2009 at 2:09 pm by tbisley
I’ll be having a party when the prices the buy SD films come down to a much more reasonable price…i.e. the Renting price!
17
Posted on 20 November, 2009 at 2:09 pm by arnoo1
And now the other countries can wait a few years before they get this service, just like vidzone (which we finally get next month).

I agree with my German fellows. It would be REALLY good if we could choose languages when we rent a movie from your store. Until then my money goes to my old school , off line video store.

Dear Sony, if all you do here is announce stuff for and about the “big four”, you should definitely stop calling this the “European” blog… Maybe a quick chat with our new European President (Go Herman!!! Go Belgium!!!) would help you see and understand the error of your ways!?

Glad to see I am not the only one turned off by the pricing and the lack of 5.1 sound.

Sorry Sony, its to expensive. I can buy new HD blu-ray discs for lower prices then your SD-Sales with stereo sound. Also, my local video rental store rents BD’s for 2€ a day.

I was really looking forward to the video store but the rentals are just too expensive, sorry guys
If they were £2 you’re rental sales would be utterly through the roof.
I was never really considering buying films through it due to the restrictions – if i buy a dvd/blu-ray i can still take it to a friends house! – but they are hideously expensive to buy given that a quick look on popular online retailers lets you buy the blu-ray for the same price or less than the SD download version.

i like the vid store but all the films i really want to see are buy only and i wont to rent them like bruno is buy only and cloverfield
27
Posted on 20 November, 2009 at 3:49 pm by flegg
Must say, the price and rental aspect is pretty poor. I saw star trek in the cinemas and wouldn’t mind watching it again, but £12 for SD copy to own? I won’t want to own it, and I want it in HD and I have to fork out £12 for that?
Please Sony, sort out the rental’s, if you can buy a film, then you should be able to rent it, and as stated above, the price of rentals needs to drop drasticly to around £2 a pop for 24 hour rental. and the price of the films itself has to drop. If we’re going to purchase a film that we have to keep on our hard drive without case or cover or a way of making a hard copy of it, then surely the price of it should be less than what it is in stores that includes the cost of the media, the packaging, the delivery etc
C’mon Sony, you can do better than that!

Posted on 20 November, 2009 at 4:02 pm by Dreadknux
Hey, I’m in one of those pictures. =D
To be brutally fair, yeah the prices are a bit steep, but I think you gotta blame the movie industry for that one, not Sony. Music/Movie industries are really out of touch with new delivery services, and it’s amazing Sony got any of them on board with this at all!
iTunes was the same when it started off; sub-CD quality downloads at a larger than usual markup to appease the labels and publishers. Once Sony’s Video Service takes off and proves its worth, I reckon movie studios might be a little bit more complacent with its pricing (your duty to push them to do this though Sony!
)

It’s a shame you’re ducking out of reading/answering comments, if you weren’t I would have asked – why on earth is all the content, even the HD content, only 2 channel stereo?!
Pricing is pushing on the expensive side as it is, particularly new releases, but if the titles don’t even have 5.1 there is no way you should be charging that much for them!
This is a classic example of why I laugh at people who think physical media will be dead in a few years – the majority of people are unwilling to pay a higher price for an inferior and more limited product…
The video store may prove to have a niche for people that used to buy UMD’s for their PSP, and the rental service may prove popular for people that don’t have surround sound. But for a console that was positioned as the centre piece of your home entertainment setup and provider of cutting edge HD entertainment like Blu-ray and Uncompressed sound over HDMI 1.3, the lack of basic 5.1 sound on your content falls far short of the mark.
Let’s hope you can catch up to your competitors in this space quickly…

@ dsl278, will our new European President be standardising the laws and legal systems across every EU Country and unifying the ratings bodies across every EU Country and making licence and distribution contracts applicable in every EU Country and making sure content owners and distribution licences match up in every EU Country etc etc?
No of course he won’t, and that’s why you will have to wait for the Video Store. They can create as many figure-heads as they like but the fact remains the EU is still a cluster of separate and independent Countries that have shared interests – it is not and never will be a collection of states within one ’super’ Country.
There is no European directive on unified pan-European digital distribution so whether you’re an EU Country or not is completely irrelevant in this instance…

So why didn’t Ireland get the PS Vid Store then?
Are we not basically the same as the UK Store minus the currency? Can’t be that difficult to do.
We’ve had enough dissappointments from Europe this week we don’t need another Sony get it sorted and fast!!!

Posted on 20 November, 2009 at 4:51 pm by Robert-Ninja
I agree. What’s up with leaving the Irish out of the loop – Pft, always getting the short end of the stick.
Even notice on Tekken 6, at the online screen, they have lights indicating all the people online in the world but none in Ireland. >___>
Meh, I have 13 movies on my PS3, anyway. Not in HD but big deal. They were free.

I really hope the Blog team is soaking in all this criticism; it’s ok to hide behind a wall and ignore it all, but your going to loose a lot of support from your users.
The PS3 has gone from strength to strength, but recently, the attitude towards the users and lack of transparency is disappointing, even some of the comments from the PS Blog team have been a little disappointing.
Take all the comments regarding price to heart, people don’t want ripped off, and you ARE ripping people off. There is no justification for those prices and there is NOTHING you guys could say that could convince me that £8 for a stereo SD file is definitely what you should be offering. DVDs cost next to nothing WITH extras, your films and tv shows should cost the same as the Rental Price with an extra pound or two for the HD version, not £8, not £12, not £16.99. They are digital film files, not physical copies.
It’s the same problem with the games. Give us transparency and we might learn WHY you price them at a really bad price point. If not, we will continue to be disappointed.

Lack of 5.1 sound..can only rent HD films..
There must be some redeeming feature..but wait! A quick check on Amazon, Play or ANY OTHER GOOD ELECTRONICS RETAILER will show that the PRICE for a PHYSICAL COPY is much LOWER, even for NEW FILMS
That and leaving out the Irish without an explanation!
Chalk up another footbullet for Sony. Don’t you guys get tired of giving the finger to the EU/AUS fans and shooting yourselves in the foot?
Cause we certainly are

Hello Sony,
I was very pleased to see the new video service. Good work and well done Sony, it was well overdue.
I must agree with all my other PS3 customers that the price for buying a movie is far too expensive. I do not understand how I can stroll down to any store and purchase a hard copy of a movie for a lower price.
The rentals are on the same level as blockbuster and our local video store but I must add that paying £3.49 for a rental on HD is an a bit of a joke as all movies for rental should be the same price. Could this be for the storage space on your servers?????
Thats my grind with Sony today on there video store.
Paulo.
PS: Why do Sony have SOE , and why is there games not avalaible on the PS3? Is it the same company? Please let me know.

My main problem with the service is that you can’t rent the new releases. Seems that the studios (including sony) are trying to force people to buy the films.
Had to laugh, Twins is on the video store to buy for £8.99, you can get it on amazon for £1.75!

I was there. Oh the joys of being a Journalist.
Was a very good night though and I think that the Video store works well for what it is.
@Bear: Yes, there was an open bar but they ran out of beer very quickly.
And it was Italian Plumber beer too (That’s peroni beer btw)
