November 26 will be a very special day for all of us here at Guerrilla. On that day, exactly five years ago, the very first Killzone title for PlayStation 2 hit the shelves in Europe. Sure, the game had already been released in the US three weeks prior, but hey… Guerrilla is based in the Netherlands. We commemorate the 26th, because that’s the date that we were finally able to see the fruits of our labor in Dutch stores.
Of course, it would be a shame to leave this occasion unmarked – and I’m not talking about the champagne and strange Dutch snacks we’ll undoubtedly be having at the studio. We also want to celebrate it with you, the fans. After all, the Killzone brand wouldn’t be where it is today without your support. So here’s what we have in store for you over the next few days:
- Looking back at Killzone 1
Later this week on Killzone.com, Seb “Motherh” Downie and I are going to play through the first Killzone game for you. We’ll be commenting on our favourite sections and wallowing in beer-induced nostalgia.
- DLC download code giveaway
Haven’t checked out the Killzone 2 DLC map packs yet? You’re in luck, because Guerrilla is having a DLC download code giveaway. Keep a close eye on Killzone.com this week for full details!
- Killzone 2 retro tournament
This weekend (November 27-30) Guerrilla will host a Killzone 2 retro tournament, using only the Beach Head and Southern Hills maps from the second DLC pack. And there’s more to be gained than valor alone, because…
- Double XP Weekend returns
…the tournament will take place during a Double XP Weekend! Just like last time, any game created in the weekend of November 27-30 will yield extra XP to help you boost your ranking.
- Killzone 1 and 2 side-by-side
Killzone.com editor Victor Zuylen will compare various features of Killzone 2 with its predecessor next week, illustrating exactly how far we’ve come since the first Killzone game was released.
- [Update] Killzone 2 DLC Price Promotion
Between the 3rd and 17th of December there will be a price drop on the Retro Map Pack (from €5.99 to €2.99) and the Map Pack Bundle (from €11.99 to €9.99).
I hope you’ll join us in celebrating the fifth anniversary of Killzone! In the meantime, I’m going to put on my Top Hits of 2004 album and try to remember how I partied five years ago.
Eric out.

Just bought Killzone 2 last week (been creating a collection since I got a PS3 slim), the multiplayer is *excellent*. Single player is graphically lovely, but the plot is only decent – the script (Rico!) needed a little more
With news of adhocParty coming soon, I also bought Killzone: Liberation today. I’ll say more once i’ve been through it – the in-game killzone.com section is broken though, cant register to upload stats

I don’t know what it is about Killzone, but when playing it something feels just right. Pure fun.
Might have to try and get my hands on those map packs.
Wish I had my Ps3 on me now, I’d so be joining for double weekend!

Congratz for the five years I have the first and the second killzone and love them.
One question Eric, do you have any industrial designer in your team? Someday I want to be in this industry
Posted on 25 November, 2009 at 8:44 am by Eric Boltjes
Yes we do actually! Our visual design team (the guys that make all the pretty drawings and are the masters of the Killzone visual universe) has several industrial designers! So definitely it’s possible for you to get into our little industry if you work hard enough!

Congratulations on the 5th! I recently started playing KZ2 multiplayer again, and am (again) enjoying it a lot.
Now, if only there were more servers with hardcore FF on action…

more new map packs for KZ2 would be awesome!
it would bring me back to KZ2.. well i still play occasionally, but not as avidly as i did, got around 23000 kills or so. there’s been so many games (i still have 2 unopened!) and betas lately.. but probably no game until KZ3 is going to come close to the hours i played this (i have only 84% of the trophies though!
). unfortunately you picked a weekend where i have to work long hours so i can’t take advantage of double xp weekend to get closer to that 100,000. PS3 is my first console, so as others have suggested, a PSN remake of the first game would be great.. the beach head and southern hills maps look fantastic in the KZ2 engine.
gefeliciteerd!

Hehe… Killzone 2 definitly belongs to my top 5 of ’09 games!
Quite a shame I’ve never played the first Killzone. I never had a PS2. But Killzone: Liberation was one of my first PSP games, that one rocked
One of the more decent PSP games!!
Killzone 2 is just stunning
Just popped it back in my PS3 last weekend (after a loooonnng break :O). It still rocks
I was killing bots all weekend xD The Skirmish mode is pure fun ‘n’ relaxing when you’re not in need of human comptetition. Visuals are still stunning, one of the best or THE best looking game on my PS3!
I think I’ll be hunting for the DLC code to put some more hours in Killzone 2
Posted on 25 November, 2009 at 8:43 am by Eric Boltjes
You should try KZ1 just for the heck of it! Looking back now we’ve come such a long way with KZ2 and the PS3 but it’s always nice to remember the roots…

Killzone 2 is an awesome game, with a great campaign mode & Online mode, i’ve never been a fan of FPS games, but after trying the Killzone 2 demo i decided to give it a go and never looked back, now i look forward to the next installment.
There are very few games around that get the right balance between the single player and online modes, most people will be interested in one or ther other but KZ2 manages to deliver on both fronts and are equally enjoyable.
I hope to be lucky enough to get a map pack code.

I loved the first one and the liberation. I like Killzone 2 a lot, but for some reason I feel like there is something missing in there. Anyways, I would love to see PSP remake of the original, with improved physics and fully customizable controls! Please make it!

Double XP weekend! Awesome! Now I might finally get the commander in chief rank. Only 15k points to go
And I just want to thank you guys for making one of my favourite games of all time. Everything just works perfectly in Killzone 2 (exepct little lag in multiplayer… Warhawk style dedicated servers to Killzone 3 please). As someone stated above don’t care what these “journalists” says. Killzone 2 is the game of the year 2009! Keep up the good work Guerrilla Games!

i always wondered why game makers don’t use the maps they made for the first game and add it for online play of the second game (+the maps of the second game) i know that beach head and Southern Hills is from the first game (i am right, right?) but i bet their were allot more maps on KZ1

Wow Eric, 25 Replies! I think you hold the record for the developer with the most replies to a thread. 33% reply ratio! Well done.
I played MAG last night and I must say, it really reminds me how much I miss Killzone 2 and my old KZ2 Clan. I’ll see if they are up for a quick reunion this week-end.
I hope we get some Killzone 3, or what ever other project you guys are working on, information soon. Keep up the great work.

I sure want to play the game… But I can’t
My PS3 is the 80GB version, without the backwards compatiblity!
Although I haven’t played Killzone 1. I’ve seen a lot of the game. Prior to Killzone 2′s release, I’ve watched some walkthroughs and cutscenes from Killzone 1. Just to get into the universe and it’s story.
Poor Helghan men, and awesome Visari speech!

Oh.. uhm @ Eric Boltjes (again).. The commenting section on your news items (on http://www.killzone.com) seems to be down and out. Since there are no comments and I’m not getting through either.
But I guess you’re already working on it

“Gaan jullie bitterballen, frikandellen en kroketten eten?”
i don’t know how you dutch people eat that stuff!!
@r1dley
“Everything just works perfectly in Killzone 2 (exepct little lag in multiplayer… Warhawk style dedicated servers to Killzone 3 please)”
warhawk doesn’t have pure dedicated servers (otherwise why would there be a gold trophy for hosting a game for four hours?!). it does have servers which manage statistics and stuff. i’ve played around 800 games in KZ2 and it’s never lagged for me (and only disconnected twice), and my broadband is nothing special. it uses a pretty clever server/p2p setup in order to work (i’ve read that it only uses about 20KB/s of bandwidth), and works great. plus it offers regionalisation – something MW2 desperately needs, because the infinity ward matchmaking system is CRAP. about 80% of the time that game is unplayable for me and i have to quit out because it seems to think i’d rather play mexicans and south americans with a 300+ms ping than with anybody in the UK at <50ms..

I hope you going to read this. If you are based in europe why you release the game first in USA. I hope that the next KillZone you going to make exclusive for Europe for some time maybe for a month. And make the online trophy a little bit simpler.
KillZone is a graet game and I am relly happy that is done in Europe. Keep up a good work and suprise as in Europe. THX.

You guys rock.
I have been crazily playing warzone ever since the game released. Thanks to exams and all i have not been able to play warzone or any other game for that matter between oct-december5th.
I will be back in december guys.
And
@Mr Eric Boltjes
Sir hats off to you. Each and every time i play warzone i end up playing every match with that big fat smile because i appreciate every little detail and effort put in warzone. And i was awed when i came to know that your the only fps developers who managed to maintain the same graphics fidelity between single player component and the multiplayer component. In december i would be back to the good old days of Killzone 2.I am like a big killzone 2 fan from India.I was like very very lucky in owning the Steel box edition of kz2 way back in Feb.
To Guerilla Games
You have made the best killzone 2 game, as a diehard playstation gamer i wanted a game which can beat the rival consoles sci-fi based fps game and by the gods you guys have pulled off a visual show piece to watch and play. Thus i want you guys to make an fps game which will be set in earth, having US marines,British army fighting against terrorists and stuff and show earthly environments.Happy birthday KZ
