Modnation Racers Beta Coming Soon + Creation Walkthrough Video

Hi everyone. My name’s Liam and I am the European Product Manager for ModNation Racers! I wanted to share with you some exciting ModNation info. Below is a hot new video from the development team. At Gamescom we showed a video that highlighted track creation and this time you get to see the Character and Kart customisation which is looking A-MAZ-ING!

Plus I have some EXCLUSIVE blog news. We are planning a localised BETA test for 2 weeks in early 2010. This is going to have exclusive European content and give you a great taster of what is to come from ModNation. Watch out for a blog post in the next few weeks about how you can sign up to be one of the first BETA testers.

I’ll be online Tuesday morning to answer any questions or comments you have. Hope you like the video and that little bit of exclusive news.

Be Good

Hello everyone!

Rob Oliveira here. I’m taking a quick break from work to talk to you about some more character creation features in ModNation Racers.

In today’s video I’m going to give you a very brief walkthrough of our sticker and layering system. I’m going to create something using one simple shape, several layers, and some color changes.

Once you’ve seen what I do with one shape and a couple of layers, you can easily imagine what can be done with hundreds of stickers, and hundreds layers at your disposal. Our system allows you to move, scale, skew, rotate, flip and change the height and transparency of all these stickers. We’ve also created many “physical” stickers like rust, mud, and dents. Like all of the parts in our game, you can change the color channels, and material properties of each of these. I hope you’re starting to see the possibilities!

Don’t see that Chrome Dragon sticker you’re looking for? There’s nothing stopping you from using one of many primitives and gradients as brushes to create it in the layer editor. Use the material properties to change all those stickers to chrome. Our layering system allows you to group those layers together, so you can move, scale, rotate or change colors as a group. Once you’ve created that Chrome Dragon, group the layers together and paste the whole thing a few more times, or save it as a Sticker Set to your PS3, for use later.

The Creation Station team here at UFG have worked really hard to make this system easy to use, but incredibly powerful. Whether you decide to create characters quickly and casually, or dive in and spend hours and hours, we know you’ll be able to create some truly unique and unbelievable characters!

We are incredibly excited to get ModNation Racers into your hands and see what you create! Start planning now:)

Did you enjoy this?

That’s pretty awesome! Just thinking of the possibilities is half the fun, i’m already thinking of Kratos is Modnation form :D

    Liam Quigley 8 December, 2009 @ 10:38 am

    That would be cool.

I keep thinking about all the possibilities, the game’s creation tools make the options pretty endless.

It’s up to you how much time you want to invest ;0)

Not sure if this has been considered for modnation Liam but will it be possible to create clans/teams it will be good fun making team designed cars and racing other teams

    Liam Quigley 8 December, 2009 @ 10:39 am

    Hey Ne0N_420

I’m sure the dev team are reading all the blogs and comment boards :0)

halfaworldaway 7 December, 2009 @ 10:22 pm   25

How do we sign up for the beta? i have never had the chance at a beta, but this game is something that i am really interested in.

    Liam Quigley 8 December, 2009 @ 10:43 am

    Hey halfaworldaway

Keep watching the blog. maybe subscribe to the RSS feed so you are the first to know.

This is clearly another case of “BETA” being a pseudonym for “demo”, right? :P

GuttermouthSIN 7 December, 2009 @ 10:33 pm   27

Awesome! :) Here’s hoping I snag a key.

Fix the browser SCE, it’s got to be kinda embarrassing to not be able to view PlayStation blog videos on your own console’s browser.

Munders12 8 December, 2009 @ 8:32 am   37

Do you guys really have to be told again?
Fix the PS3 browser or your blog so vids can be viewed.
It’s embarrassing that PlayStation can’t even make their products & services compatible.

kinda reminds me of the editor in forza, if you can create similar results then i can’t wait to see what people come up with.
hopefully the designs will be shareable.

“here’s a date you’re going to want to mark down on your calendars. December 18. That’s the day we open up the ModNation Racers Beta to you. The Beta runs through January 10, and you’ll have the chance to score a Beta voucher right here on the PlayStation Blog!”

suddenly we don’t feel so special after all.

    Liam Quigley 8 December, 2009 @ 10:50 am

I want you to feel special HazelAM

That’s why we are getting exclusive European content that is worth the wait.

Understand the US share our language but for non English speakers having the Beta in their local language is important hence a little wait.

Believe me it will be worth it.

found this quite patronising really all things considered. do SCEA and SCEE like inciting the “them and us mentality”?

    Liam Quigley 8 December, 2009 @ 10:53 am

    not at all Dante_Zero.

we want you to get the best from our products especially when we want you to test and shape the product.

Oooh i hope i get lucky :)

FlexmanUK 8 December, 2009 @ 10:40 am   42

Viideo doesn’t work on Playstation3, says application not supported.

Sweet cant wait to get my code

RadioactiveMouse 8 December, 2009 @ 11:13 am   44

Sounds great. Looking forward to having a look in at one of my most anticipated games of the Spring 2010 line-up.

I’m guessing it won’t be before the first store update in 2010 due around the 7th? :P

Still nice to see it making it’s way over the the Atlantic. Felt a bit left out with the whole give-away in the LBP Game of the Year edition in the US.

Galvanise_ 8 December, 2009 @ 11:15 am   45

Thanks Liam. Have the development team toyed around with including loops in the game?

I can’t wait for this game, looks really good!

However, why do I need to be a saddo with no life or job to get a beta! I want to play games not look at the PS blogs all day, also, why not give first dibs to PS3 owners here since day one, reward loyalty n’ all that!

VitalogyPJ 8 December, 2009 @ 12:50 pm   47

@39 HazelAM
Nothing that we’re not already used to, am I right? And this “exlusive content” thing they talk about its nothing but localized language, so there’s nothing new here or even anything that US won’t get too.

I also think that this localized language thing is some excuse they’re giving for releasing the beta late (after US) in EU, ask whoever you want and they will tell you: “I don’t freakin’ mind to play it in english, just release it at the same time as US”; This is my anwser and probably plenty more too.

    Liam Quigley 8 December, 2009 @ 3:02 pm

    Hi VitalogyPJ,

There will be exclusive European content on our Beta. It won’t just be localised language.

Will Australia be getting this too? I, too, have never had a chance at anything first.. gaming wise.

I’ve already signed up on the Modnation site but even if I get a code, I don’t have a US PSN account. :/

Hey i need a beta code of modnations race . XD

SiRobertson 8 December, 2009 @ 5:00 pm   50

ModNation Racers and GT5 are at the top of my must-buy list, really looking forward to both of them.

One question: If all of the characters and vehicles in a race have HUGE amounts of decals, and the track is heavily detailed, will that cause the game to slow down (drop frames etc)?
