Hi guys I’m Kevin, Online Community Manager at SEGA Europe and known to those in the SEGA fraternity as ArchangelUK (or AAUK for short) pleased to meet you.
One of my responsibilities as it were is dealing with our classic franchises, so I’m especially delighted to be able to at last confirm something that we’ve been working on for what seems like forever.
YAKUZA 3 IS COMING TO THE WEST!
Yes indeed, Europe and America will be getting the chance to take on the mantle of Kiryu Kazuma this time battling the Ryudo Ikka, and once again Yakuza will be an exclusive for the PlayStation 3.
Yakuza (or Ryu ga Gotoku as its known in the East) has a highly dedicated fanbase and the series has a very hardcore following over on this side of the globe. Yakuza 3 has already sold over half a million copies in Japan alone and whilst the wait has been long for our US, European and Australian fans you won’t have to wait much longer – the game will be out March 2010.
So yes your pleas for Yakuza 3 were heard loud and clear, I’ll allow Gary Knight – SOE’s European Marketing Director, to explain more:
“Yakuza 3 was one of the most requested titles for localisation by our European SEGA community, so we are delighted to be able to fulfil their wishes with this announcement. As well as delving even further into the rich narrative of the Yakuza universe, the development team have pushed the PlayStation 3 hardware to the limits to produce a beautiful and startlingly realistic depiction of the Japanese underworld.”
As part of the lengthy localisation work Yakuza 3 will feature full English subtitling, whilst maintaining the rich Japanese voice actors that bring an extremely engaging atmosphere to the game – this will no doubt please the purists out there!
Also using our incredible powers of persuasion and dark (blue) magic, we’ve been able to get you guys on the PSB.EU an exclusive interview with the developers of the game. So, if there’s anything you’d like to ask the team about the games production post it in the comments section below. We will then pick the best ones and send them over to Japan.
Yakuza 3 is coming – will you fight like a pussy-cat or more Like a Dragon?

Great news, really has made my day that i will be able to fully enjoy this game now and understand the story. Its also great that you are not dubbing and keeping the japanese voices and not dubbing.
Not too sure about the March release though. I’ll be buying day one, but there are some biggies hitting in March so its an expensive month.
I really hope this sells well and look forward to the announcment of Yakuza 4 coming westside

I have a question specifically for Yu Suzuki:
Sorry to beat a dead horse as it were, but is there anyway we could get Shenmue’s story resolved? Even if it sadly couldn’t be a game (though we all know there is a huge fanbase and a big cult following for the series), it could be a book, a comic/graphic novel, anything really.
I’m very pleased to see Ryo appearing in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and ecstatic that Yakuza 3 is officially announced for an English localization, but anything related to Shenmue would make my head explode from the excitement.

Yakuza 3 is an action-RPG, you don’t drive cars, don’t kill innocent people, melee fighting is the focus.
Aside from running around streets completing story and sidemissions, and mixing with criminals, it’s not really like GTA at all.

Releasing in the same month as Sega All-Stars Racing.. put Kazuma on a motorbike as DLC!

Having never played a Yakuza game, I’m still fairly interested in this.
Any chance of Yakuza 4 being confirmed for a Western release as well?

Thank you, THANK YOU!!!
This is exactly what our beloved european PS3 needed!
But will we still have the theme song (Loser) and the original karaoké songs?
And what about the DLC?
Again, thank you i will finally able to collect worms near the frontyard in english :p

Yes, finally! Thank you Sega and everybody that made this happen! Also, thanks for the orginal voice-over, I really hated the frequent swearing in Yakuza 1 and 2, which just felt inappropriate in the context.
Questions for the developers:
1. Why did you decide to do a spin-off as the next installment (Ryu ga Gotoku: Kenzan!), instead of making the direct sequel?
2. Would you be interested in making a Yakuza/Ryu ga Gotoku game taking place outside of Japan? For example, if Kiryu would come across the “western” mafia in the USA.
3. Was it difficult to go from working on the PS2 to the PS3, when developing the next iteration in the Yakuza/Ryu ga Gotoku franchise?
4. What is your favourite mini-game in Yakuza 3?
Thanks!

Thanks for your questions Icarus, some really good ones there

Is there any chance of the Samuarai version of Yakuza being localised? It can’t be that much work to create English subtitles compared to a full english language port from East to West? I’d love to play the Samurai version but there isn’t a chance with it being completely Japanese. Is it a possible? Silly question i know, i’m sure the answer will be non commital lol

This is great news, been looking forward to this^^ I’m one of the fans of the Japanese audio, so I stand with you on that decision
If I was to ask a question, I’d probably ask that from behind the scenes, who was their favourite character, and what was their reason for it?

Thanks SEGA, with this decision you’re back on track to become again one of the best videogame makers in my eyes. I will be sure to buy this the day of its release.

Hello
I have been a huge fan of the Yakuza franchise from the first hours, and frankly am enormously excited to hear that SEGA is bringing the game over here. Herebelow are my questions:
1) After completing the game and unlocking Premium Adventure mode, will we have the possibility to start it and complete the side missions by keeping our game statistics, or do we start from ground zero?
2) Will the DLC available in Japan also come over to the West? If so, how long after its release will they hit the Playstation Store?
3) What is the maximum level that can be reached by updating Technique, Body, Wind and Mastery?
Thank you,
aat08

it’ll probably sell like crap anyway it’s out in march, the month of Final Fantasy XIII for crying out loud, Sega obviously don’t expect it to sell and are covering it up, this way they can say “well we did have Final Fantasy XIII to contend with”, btw ain’t God of War 3 also out in march? seems I couldn’t have got it anyway

Great news!
I recently started playing the Japanese version after completing Kenzan!, which was great by the way. I’m going to get this version as well, just to make sure that we’ll get 4 localised by the time as well.
Looking forward to it!Thanks for listening SEGA!
My question: Why no sign of a localised Kenzan! ? That game was as good as any other one.

FINALLY! Thank you, Sega, thank you! Seems like there’s still hope of gaming not turning into just Call of FIFA Duty Final Hero of NHL Fantasy Mario DJ and this one’s going to be a day one must buy to support that cause. Just plain awesome news!

I’m glad they kept the japanese language.
but I do with it was in English too, as subtitles distract me too much from whats going on.
But really just so glad we’re getting YAKUZA 3!!!!!!!!!

Question to the devs:
Will there be any content changed?
(music, scenes, videos, censorship, … added or removed)
Will the game still require an installation?

If anyone hasn’t played the first 2 games (not a requirement for part 3) both Amazon.co.uk and play.com have copies via their 3rd party sellers.

Very Good News indeed. here goes my question that i hope gets an answer. so now that Ryu GA Gotoku 3 finally gets released here, will there hopefully also be a release of the Ryu GA Gotoku Kenzan too? and if its not too much trouble too i would love to know anything regarding a possible ShenMue III as that story is to rich in emotions to be let unfinished like so if Yu Suzuki-san or anyone at SEGA can shed some light on that, alot and i mean ALOT of people would be happy. Domo Arigato for any reply at all.

Played the Demo from Japanese store and liked it. It had some unique feeling in it so Ill probably give it a try. Maybe ill understand more about the game too since I am very poor with moonrunes (Japanese H/K/kanji).

Thank you so much for this news! This news has certainly made my year. I’m not kidding, either. I have enjoyed games this year, but news alone of this game reaching the US/EU has really made my year.
Question: Has anything been added (minus English subs) or taken away from Yakuza 3 to enhance the experience? Even if it’s just correcting some issues with Yakuza 3 that was released in Japan earlier this year?
Thanks.

Wrong blog, Shenmue elegies are elsewhere.
As for Yakuza 3… first I find out I have a job for a year longer. Then this. 2008 has been the year for great news. Here’s to number 4 coming out here (Japanese VA and English subtitles, naturally).

Excuse me but…YAAAAAAHHHHHUUUUUUU (in a cowboy voice) Now that’s out the way I can’t wait for this after hearing so many positive things about the game. I think I’m gonna have to buy a PS2 and the first 2 games. I’ve been putting it off, thinking these and various other games I didn’t play, would become downloadable but my hand has been forced. The first 4 months of next year are bloddy jam packed with games. God can’t wait

Brilliant! I’ve been hoping this title would come out for some time. I especially love that you are keeping the original voice acting. I’ve played Shenmue II on Xbox and really loved the atmosphere, but I felt it was let down by the Western voice acting.
I gave away my PS2, I just a PS3 slim so I can’t play the PS2 prequels, will the game have any sort of story recap, or will the originals be made available over the PSN?!!!
Posted on 9 December, 2009 at 9:56 am by Martin Snelling
Hi VenomUK – Yakuza 3 has a series of catch-up videos that can be viewed at any point in the game.

I really want to play Yakuza 3, but Im very disappointed with the “English only” thing. Come on Sega! Spend the money you saved with the japanese audio doing subtitles to other languages. Why is the first Yakuza in Spanish but no the third one?
Dont get me wrong, Im a big Yakuza fan and Im buying the game, but I cant feel the work complete if my main language is not supported.
Hell, I think I must be thankful, at least I can understand English, but I know Im not going to be 100% happy with the game

I absolutely love that we’ll get the voice-acting in Japanese instead of English. English would’ve ruined the feel of the game.
