Hi guys I’m Kevin, Online Community Manager at SEGA Europe and known to those in the SEGA fraternity as ArchangelUK (or AAUK for short) pleased to meet you.
One of my responsibilities as it were is dealing with our classic franchises, so I’m especially delighted to be able to at last confirm something that we’ve been working on for what seems like forever.
YAKUZA 3 IS COMING TO THE WEST!
Yes indeed, Europe and America will be getting the chance to take on the mantle of Kiryu Kazuma this time battling the Ryudo Ikka, and once again Yakuza will be an exclusive for the PlayStation 3.
Yakuza (or Ryu ga Gotoku as its known in the East) has a highly dedicated fanbase and the series has a very hardcore following over on this side of the globe. Yakuza 3 has already sold over half a million copies in Japan alone and whilst the wait has been long for our US, European and Australian fans you won’t have to wait much longer – the game will be out March 2010.
So yes your pleas for Yakuza 3 were heard loud and clear, I’ll allow Gary Knight – SOE’s European Marketing Director, to explain more:
“Yakuza 3 was one of the most requested titles for localisation by our European SEGA community, so we are delighted to be able to fulfil their wishes with this announcement. As well as delving even further into the rich narrative of the Yakuza universe, the development team have pushed the PlayStation 3 hardware to the limits to produce a beautiful and startlingly realistic depiction of the Japanese underworld.”
As part of the lengthy localisation work Yakuza 3 will feature full English subtitling, whilst maintaining the rich Japanese voice actors that bring an extremely engaging atmosphere to the game – this will no doubt please the purists out there!
Also using our incredible powers of persuasion and dark (blue) magic, we’ve been able to get you guys on the PSB.EU an exclusive interview with the developers of the game. So, if there’s anything you’d like to ask the team about the games production post it in the comments section below. We will then pick the best ones and send them over to Japan.
Yakuza 3 is coming – will you fight like a pussy-cat or more Like a Dragon?

Honestly this is the best news I’ve heard in a long time ! Yakuza 3 being one of the few Playstation originals/exclusives left really strengthens the brand and makes PS3 that more desirable. Along with Last Guardian & Heavy Rain, next year is gonna be amazing …
My question to the Japan team is: will the western version be cut or censored in any way from the Japanese version ???

“Where did the devellopers took their inspiration for the gameworld from and what were they focusing on while creating it?”
I don’t know Japan that much but some trailers show some great and lifely environnement, were just wondering how it differs from reality.

Having played and loved the first two Yakuzas (well the second one more than the first) I am a very happy gamer.
I had almost given up on hope on ever seeing this and had been considering taking Japanese lessons just to be able to play it, as we know the story is quite important in Yakuza.
However and I’m surprised not more people have asked for this:
I would absolutely love to see Yakuza Kenzan translated as well. You could even call it Samurai Yakuza (which is quite incorrect but in the land of marketing that doesn’t matter) and increase your sales significantly.
Why?
Samurai are some tough bastards.
Yakuza are some tough bastards
Samurai*Yakuza = Infinitely tough bastard.
That sells.

Fantastic news, so pleased this one’s subtitled. I played Yakuza 2 before 1 (don’t ask me why) and found the english audio jarring. Please bring back Shenmue.

A couple of questions I’d like to ask the development team…
If/when PS2 games start arriving at the PS Store are we likely to see the first two Yakuza games available for download? And if so would it be possible for the US and EU to get an undub of the first game featuring the English subtitles with the Japanese voices?
If Yakuza 3 were to sell well here would you consider localizing Kenzan or go straight to 4?
And is it likely that you’ll work on another spin-off title such as Kenzan?
I’ll be pre-ordering this as soon as it comes up on Amazon, I hope it’s as good as Yakuza 2 (though I think 2 was so good that it’s gonna be really hard to top).

Oh and one more, Yakuza 3 in Japan had lots of downloadable content, 29 downloads in fact, will we in the EU and US get these on the disc or will we have to download them? And if we have to download them will we have to pay (as they were free on the Japanese PSN) or is there a chance we simply won’t get that content at all?

Wow! Fantastic news! If only publishers realised there is a market here in Europe for Japanese games.
I’ll be getting this the day it is released. And how about releasing Ryu Ga Gotoku: Kenzan? Another game I would buy on day one.
Also really pleased it’s going to be subtitles only and not a horrible dub. This is definitely the way to go with any future Japanese releases.

I cannot wait for this March 2010 will be an excellent time gaming on the PS3. Japanese voices with English subtitles is the only way to do it as far as I am concerned. Thanks Sega & Sony

Hi!
Is it true that the game will come censored in some parts?, like the gestion of the night clubs.
Thanks.

Hi Martin
Any word on when Sega will be able to answer some of our questions from above?
I would really like to know if Yakuza 3 will be different in any way to the Japanese original?
I would also really like to know if there is any word on a possible European release for Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan! or would Sega advise me to import it instead?
I would definitely buy both these games on day one and I’m sure many others would too, particularly if it was made known the latter scored 37/40 in Famitsu magazine.
I must have both these games, preferably with English subtitles. It’s really eating me up LOL.
Many thanks
