Hi Guys
The next system software update for PS3 will be available very soon. Update 3.15 is an optional update and has two key features which are explained below –
‘minis’ come to PS3:
We launched minis for PSP back in October but from the 17th December you will be able to enjoy these bite size games on your PS3 as well as your PSP. This firmware update allows the minis emulator to work on PS3 and we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December.
Check out great titles like ‘Blast off’ (8.5/10 – IGN), ‘Fieldrunners’, “a wonderfully crafted casual nugget” (8/10 – Eurogamer) or ‘Kahoots’, “a must-buy” (8/10 – Videogamer).
If you buy a minis game from the 17th it will work on both platforms so if you have a PS3 and a PSP you will only need to buy it once and it will be available to download to your PS3 and your PSP.
If you have already bought a mini for PSP and want to get it on your PS3 as well, just go to your download list in the Store and download it again for free. The game will then work on your PS3 as well.
PS3 Data Transfer:
This feature enables you to transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.
Look forward to your comments and will reply to as many questions as I can.
Thanks
James

Wow. Two brilliant new features. Looking forward to being able to play the minis on my PS3 (my PSP is too busy with Disgaea
) and it’s nice to know you can transfer data between PS3s if you need to. Great work guys!

@DarkStyler
Backup and restore only works on the same PS3 – i.e. when you install a new drive.

The data transfer isn’t actually going to be that useful in real-world terms. Most people that require this facility (me included) only do so because they have experienced the YLOD – this transfer is only any good if you have two WORKING Playstations.
Obviously these free updates are useful, but a better/faster/offsite backup facility would be more so.

Hi James, sounds like a great update to me as I’ve already bought quite a few PSP minis. I’m just wondering, if I play a mini on my PSP, will the save be transferable to the PS3, and vice versa? This is already possible when I play a PSOne Classic I downloaded from the PSN store on my PSP and PS3, so I’m hoping the minis emulator can do the same. If it can’t it’s no biggie but it’d be cool for games like Breakquest or Fieldrunners where I’ve unlocked a lot of the levels.

Hi James can you tell us if this fixes the sync problem with the bluetooth that many owners have been getting since update 3.10? Also why is this update an optional one if the answer is yes to the sync problems? Nice to see the transfer option allowing you to move the unmovable saves as well as copying others files to your second PS3, its a very nice touch!
keep up the good work!!

The PS3 data transfer is a GREAT idea!
I really hope the new update finally takes care off the trophy synch problem. I hope it, because I still haven’t been able to update my trophies since the problem occurred. I can’t get any further then 10%.
Keep up the good work

@DF_2K9 – have you ever used twitter?
seriously though as a few people of said there is a browser to do that kind of thing; however i’m all for EVEN MORE FEATURES…
cross game chat , smb ‘samba’ network hard drive support (not just the already supported dlna/upnp media sharing) & itunes sharing/streaming support <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< these can be too hard for the firmware team to do, after all their open standards and dlan was easily incorporated….

baby steps as always for ps3 firmware upgrades
can you please tell me if there is more then one person working on these firmware updates, i can’t believe in all this time the ps3 exists, we still don’t have what we have been asking for, all updates are simply for Sony to milk us in every way possible or use us to advertise your games, it’s our turn now, throw us a bone please?

1. Does this mean that other PSP games will be playable on the PS3 lie God of War : Chains of Olympus?
2. Are Sony planning on improving PS2 compatibilty support as well or just recreating all the PS2 games as HD versions?
3. Any news about a fix for the Trophy syncing error quite a few people are getting. My son’s gets to about 14% then gets a 8002804 error!
Looking forward to all the great exclusives next year!

Lol while i was reading rumours about this on another site i missed the announcement.

This is awesome, thank you James and everyone at Sony who worked on this.
Some of those minis are seeming more attractive already, you crafty beggars
I own 2 PS3s so the data transfer is going to be very useful.
I’m still hoping the browser has been tweaked….

I’d also like to know if you can transfer single protected game data from an old PS3 to your new one. My Killzone 2 data is stuck on my old one.

Hey James,
Since you guys are implementing a “mini’s emulator” of sorts, are you guys ever considering implemnenting either a ps2 or psp game emulator?
I’d love ta buy the gta psps games an play em on my ps3 personally.
Any feedback is appreciated.

Well, here we go again, with the LIST (in priority order):
- MKV Support
- Cross Game Voice Chat
- SkyPE Support
- (maybe?) PS2 support via some kind of an emulator?

Its an optional update so I don’t see the point for myself to download it until the next update. I assume these features will be included as well with the next update if you decide “not” to download 3.15?

as someone who recently lost thier 60gb to a flashing light of doom, but luckily have a back up, i was distraught to find a lot of content (notably PS2 saves and a few ps3 save) had not restored. If I restore after this update will I get back me and my gf’s Persona saves?
Also neat on the Mini’s that makes them far more attractive, but I’d LOVE to see all PSP games on the ps3, that way I’d gladly part the cash for them (even some that I own on UMD!

“we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December”
What does this mean? So not all minis will work when the firmware update is released?

A-N-O-T-H-E-R crappy update -_-, first of ALL fix the damn Sync problem with the Trophies and the “System Activation” Problem!!! After these problems add more features.

The data transfer is a nice feature… It’s a pity they didn’t make it available when the slim came out as my 60Gb system died (permanently after the 4th repair) about a day after I got the new one (probably felt rejected). So even though I tried a backup / restore between the two boxes it did nothing. I managed to move my non-secure game saves but I lost 60 hours of demon souls and my killzone saves as they couldn’t be copied.
Lets hope this firmware fixes the problem with synchronising controllers and BD remote to PS3 slims.
http://loot-ninja.com/2009/12/04/major-bluetooth-issues-with-ps3-firmware-3-10/
I’m also getting some odd HDMI dropouts after the system has been on for about 5 hours+ in 1080p mode, since I swapped my 60gb fat for a slim so there are some definite issues with the new hardware, that needs sorting.

Posted on 8 December, 2009 at 4:03 pm by mcwildcard
Very useful update, I’ve no doubt it’ll come in handy for the future. When I went from 60GB to 80GB unit it was a massive pain to re-download everything, I’ll probably be upgrading to a slim in the next few months, so it’s a relief to know I won’t have to go through that all again!

Posted on 8 December, 2009 at 4:03 pm by Ceph01
Unfortunately the transfer utility is only useful as long as your old PS3 still works. Couldn’t you please include an option to create a complete backup on an external hdd which can be transferred to a new PS3 in case the old one dies? That would be so much more helpful.
Thank you for continuing to improve PS3!

Firmware updates almost ALLWAYS have hidden features not listed in the release notes.
Why not wait until AFTER the update is release and if the issues which nark you so much haven’t been rectified THEN have a moan.
Moaning in advance when you don’t know for sure whether or not something has been included in the update seems somewhat premature

“So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content.”
LOSE.
Also this seems to be a tacit admission that the YLOD problem is more extensive than Sony let on. Sony should do the right thing and extend the warranty for 3 years or at least agree to fix YLOD consoles for free since it is a design flaw of the console.

O.o
Another C-R-A-P-Y Update -_-
You dont have any other work to do than putting unuseles features?
Try improving the Damn Errors (Trophy Sync and the God Damn System Activation Error).

So..no Cross Game Chat? No Trophy Sync Fix? But we get…….Minis and the opportunity to stream data from one PS3 to another but only if the first isn’t YLOD’d (Basically turning this into a dud unless for some reason you’re allergic to external HDDs)

The data transfer seems like a great new feature – not sure that PSP Minis are for me though…
More important to me is whether or not this new firmware update will fix the controller sync issues that I have been experiencing since updating to firmware v3.10?
Thanks.

2 quick questions. Where will the minis save data be saved, in a new folder or in PS3 save utility? And will the PS3 mini be separate to the PSP one, or will you play the PSP one, and press triangle to copy it?
Just wanted to repost this because you probably skipped it or didnt notice it

Maybe a “synchronize systems” option could be better than the “copy from” and “copy to” new features.
The idea is to have the newest data in both consoles, right? but sometimes you have a mixed set of old and new data(savegames mainly) in both consoles, so you will have to copy one by one and choosing the right direction for each of them(with the new feature) instead of just synchronizing both devices(just one step).
Just a suggestion.

Hi james again
Well one simple question and really James i would appreciate an answer .Next week i am going to buy a new ps3 slim 250 gb for my living room.I was going to back up my fat ps3 and recover everything on the slim. With out need it to erase everything on my fat one.So in other words why do i need to delete my stuff on my old ps3 with the new feature ?I mean i don’t buy one and sell the old i just need my stuff on all my ps3.If you get my point.
Thanks James.

Once again the internet rumour factory came up trumps!!!
I think this is a great update as I’ve wanted both of these things to happen!!!!
Having Mini’s on PS3 is great as it gives PS3 owners access to cheap indie games, and makes getting a PSP a little bit more tempting if you already own games for it.
And the lack of data transfer was the one thing that was stopping me from upgrading my launch model to a Slim – I’m not going to be able to resist getting one now that you’ve made it so easy!
My 160GB upgraded HDD in my launch model is getting a little full, so I’m thinking a nice 250GB Slim will do the job, probably coinsiding with a game I was going to get anyway – a 250GB God of War III bundle perhaps?!
Thanks Sony!

How? If you get a YLOD there’s nothing in this update that will help you.

Suggestion for a future update: The ability to link photos on the PS3 to website forms thus allowing the upload of photos. So, you go to a site such as Twitpic (the upload page) and when the “Browse” button is clicked we get a list of the photos on our PS3.
Off-topic: The camera in Home is pants, the image quality of the photos is terrible and it takes way too long for the photos to be generated/saved.

Very good! Are there any other changes like bug fixes etc, or is this a feature adding update! It’s great that your adding loads of new features, ones that I hadn’t even thought of but still seem very useful thinking about it! Is there any way of stopping the grey screen inbetween the XMB and a game starting, even if the game is in the same resalution as the XMB I still get it. Also what about game DLC data transferring?
93
Posted on 8 December, 2009 at 4:21 pm by Apnomis
@ DarkStyler, copy-protected materials like games and some save files etc are locked to a specific PS3, so you can backup/restore to the same PS3 but not restore to a different PS3.
It makes sense if you think about it, otherwise pirates would simply be able to clone copy-protected content on PS3 after PS3.
You can still redownload content on up to 4 other PS3′s that are activated on the same user account though, so data transfer everything to your new PS3 and redownload the selected items you want to keep on your old PS3.
The new data transfer process won’t erase everything by the sound of it, only copy-protected materials that wouldn’t ordinarily be allowed to move PS3′s using the original backup process.
