Hi Guys
The next system software update for PS3 will be available very soon. Update 3.15 is an optional update and has two key features which are explained below –
‘minis’ come to PS3:
We launched minis for PSP back in October but from the 17th December you will be able to enjoy these bite size games on your PS3 as well as your PSP. This firmware update allows the minis emulator to work on PS3 and we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December.
Check out great titles like ‘Blast off’ (8.5/10 – IGN), ‘Fieldrunners’, “a wonderfully crafted casual nugget” (8/10 – Eurogamer) or ‘Kahoots’, “a must-buy” (8/10 – Videogamer).
If you buy a minis game from the 17th it will work on both platforms so if you have a PS3 and a PSP you will only need to buy it once and it will be available to download to your PS3 and your PSP.
If you have already bought a mini for PSP and want to get it on your PS3 as well, just go to your download list in the Store and download it again for free. The game will then work on your PS3 as well.
PS3 Data Transfer:
This feature enables you to transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.
Look forward to your comments and will reply to as many questions as I can.
Thanks
James

Come on :-/ Why can’t i move my Killzone 2 save to a new PS3 in the Future for? Copy protected saves should be stopped really. I lost my Killzone 2 save months back because i could not back it up to a Memory card :-/ [I saved all my other saves tho, thank god]

“This feature enables you to easily transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another.”
It appears they have a different definition of “ALL” then what’s given in any dictionary. The transfer feature seems mostly useless…
Why does it delete source game data prior to transfer? This is idiotic! So the procedure will really be: 1) Backup PS3-A to external hard drive 2) Transfer PS3-A to PS3-B 3) Restore PS3-A from backup
Why does it require a LAN cable, what if both my PS3′s are already on the same LAN via Wifi? (or cable for that matter) Dumb!
It won’t copy protected game saves or DLC so we might as well just keep using USB sticks and redownloading from the internet…
*sigh*
The PSP Mini’s on the PS3 seems nice but why not all PSP games? Are they afraid of actually selling software? It’s not like they make money on PSP hardware anyway…
*sigh*

So if I transferred my saves from old PS3 to new PS3, will I be able to earn trophies using my existing saves or will I need to make new saves on my new PS3 to enable trophies?

Will the data transfer work over a LAN or do the two systems have to be directly connected?
Those of us with more than one system could do with some kind of LAN synchronisation utility to keep each machine up to date. Sometimes I want to continue a game upstairs and can’t due to locked saves etc.

I don’t mean to sound negative but this update is very disappointing! Why have Sony made it so difficult to back up your machine?
I have had one PS3 die on me already taking with it any locked game saves, (Killzone 2) I had a backup of the machine but when you try to restore it does not restore any of the locked saves.
Sony you really need to sort this out, why does the new transfer function have to delete the content from the original machine. I really don’t mind if game saves are locked but surely they should be locked to the user ID? You should still be able to copy them, so if I had two machines in one house as long as the PSN ID was the same they would work on either.
Why does this new transfer not transfer locked games, don’t say it’s the publishers wish. Sony you write the operating system, make it transfer them.
Why do you never listen to your customers, the people that are actually buying your products and keeping you employed!!

Why do people feel the need to post the same question over and over again? Can you lot asking about copying save games not read?? Nice touch with the minis though, Some of them are quite cool

my question. when transferring save data to a new ps3, do you need to delete it on the other account. can we start tethering save data to our psn accounts like on the xbox. i want to be able to move from ps3 to ps3 on the same save file.

thanks for your reply,
“you can’t directly transfer SingStar DLC but you can re-download the tracks on the new PS3 provided they are still available on the store. That should get most of them back and get you some brownie points!”
do i have to delete them off the old ps3? at the moment when i try to redownload the songs i get a message about them already been downloaded and i should check the usage rights.

Useless if my old PS3 dies! Update sounds pretty cool though! Minis sound meh, don’t use my PSP anymore, if they are priced REASONABLY then I will pick a few.

So if the protected saves cannot be copied over, can there at least be a system put into place where you could link the save to your PSN ID and to use it you have to log in to the PSN to verify yourself or something, allowing backups that will only work for yourself?
I don’t want to whine lol but this is essentially the only thing stopping me from upgrading to a PS3 slim.

My question on transfering my saved games info and other stuff, will I need to delete that information from one PS3, or can the information be on both?

I am absolutely against the so-called copy protected game saves, SONY can set rules to the publishers/developers. ‘One step forward, three steps back’ is Sony’s new slogan. If xbox 360 can set requirements for games why can’t Sony? Sony is simply too slow on everything, 3 years later Sony implements the xbox 360 achievements system, slow eh? Another 20 more years until we see the in-game music across the whole PS3 system and in-game chat

I am still waiting for any method, how to tranfer protected saves (only) from between my two PS3s. As I travel during my job, I play on both during the week, depending where I am.
For the last time I play only games with not protected saves, because I cannot enjoy the game if I cannot play it continuosly. Direct tranfer is not bad option in case you move to new PS3, but in all other cases it is useless.
If there is a fear of game creators for copying saves, there is always trophy-lock to PSN account (so other lock is for what?), but there should be help from SONY at least, something like “MOVE” function for such a protected saves. May be online user-storage (~20MB or 1 save limit) for moving/export saves in (remove from 1st console) and import for the 2nd system.
No major features in this FW for me, I can miss it

Hello -
I am thinking of buying a PS3 Slim, but I do not play video games. I plan on using it as a Blu-Ray and media player. My alternative was to buy a Blu-Ray player and separate media play like the WD TV Live. My kids have a lot of movies that they watch and the dvds end up getting scratched up. I would rather store our movies, music files, etc on an external HD drive and use the media play features of the PS3. I have numerous live music files stored in the FLAC format. Will the PS3 ever support that? How does the PS3 rate as a media player? What enhancements are planned for the 3.20 firmware update?
Thank you

Now if you were able to take the hard drive from a dead PS3, put it into an external case and plug it into a USB-port of the new PS3 to transfer your data – THIS would be really helpful.
On the other hand… still no word about a bluetooth-fix?
Need to keep nagging until there is an answer :p

As an owner of two PS3s, I would really like you to expand this feature into a synchronization between 2 PS3s. That would take away the headache of having to backup the PS3 occasionally and keeping game saves synched via memory cards back and forth. And backup my PS1 and PS2 gamesaves too!
It’s a step in the right direction, just keep going with this. I want a house full of networked PS3s that “Do Everything”.

WOW!! the data transfer sounds awesome! pity it wasnt around when the slim launched and many of us bought our 2nd PS3′s
i do have a question, with games and game saves, is there a way to transfer just 1 at a time? i think that is what i find most frustrating now that i have 2, i have to download everything twice. also are there any plans to make this transfer a little easier? i was thinking maybe transferring over the network.
congrats on implementing such a great feature!!

so i’m just adding to the voices asking for twitter, cross game voice, better web experience-browser for ps3 and psp, cheaper prices on digital content(see UMD’S compared to digital!).
Sort out these deleting not deleting data on different systems. Just make a proper backup thing!
Keep the firmwares coming, i’m disappointed because of the decline of playstation.

This data transfer sounds sweet, but a couple of questions questions:
“Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3.”
1) I have 2 PS3s, is it possible to transfer saved games from one to the other using this method without deleting the originals or am I stuck doing it manually still?
2) Do they have to be directly connect in order for this to work or is over wired LAN unacceptable? What about WiFi?

Each new game that I buy with copyprotected gamesaves brings me one new step further away from buying a slim. And i actually want one. The new feature is useless until it can solve this.

Hi
I’ve tried to find where to submit feedback for wanted features of my PS3 fw, but have yet not been able to find anything other than this blog.
So I’ll drop a few wishes here and hope you can answer me if I should continue here or put more elsewhere.
Password protected user accounts – As a parent, I want to keep my account away from my children who have created their own (with their own themes and PSN accounts). I want to set my account with full access but limit the childrens accounts with different age limits (so they must be protected by passwords too). A pain to change parentel level every time you want to use the system.
(Yes, I know kids will regard me as a bore by now)
Dissapointing to find out that my PS3 didn’t play HD files from my SONY Video camera HDR-CX105E when saved to a NAS. They play well when Camera is connected via USB port (and a beauty to navigate compared to on-screen).
Pls add support for more HD fileformats (at least those used by your own products)
Any chance of getting BRAVIA Sync on a pre-slim model (160GB)?
Any chance of getting SACD support (as was on 60GB model) and DVD-Audio?
And VidZone with HD videos and multichannel sound?
PSN in 1080p? (at least videos shown various places in PSN)

Hi, I am confused now about the HDD backup and the comment on only being able to restore to the same PS3. I use an external HDD and run the normal backup option, keeping this in case my PS3 dies. If I bought a new one I was under the impression I could restore from my HDD backup to the new PS3 without any issues. I understand the problem with the protected game files, but excluding those, are you saying I will be unable to restore everything else to a new PS3 by simply using the restore option ?.

What would be really nice is to be able to access my saved games from over the network. I use 4 PS3s (Living room, theatre room, office, and bedroom) and it’s always a pain to get a USB drive, copy a save, bring it to another PS3, copy it to the PS3 and then repeat the process again. How hard would it be for the PS3s to see another PS3 on the network??

SIMPLE QUESTION,
DOES THIS UPDATE ADDRESS THE CONTROLLER SYNCING ISSUE THAT SEEMS TO OF BEEN PLAGUING THE SLIM SKU’S SINCE THE 3.10 UPDATE ?

Posted on 9 December, 2009 at 12:25 am by bigdaveg
This update is useless due to the fact that most people needing to get a 2nd ps3 are doing so by having to get a reconditioned one from Sony for a rip off of almost £130. By this time the old one has died of ylod and as such cannot be used to transfer the data! (Talking from recent personal experience here guys so no I’m not an xbox lover or anything)
It would be much better to devise a way of retrieving your data from a previously used ps3 internal harddrive by simply taking it out and plugging it into the new one. (Even if only your unprotected personal data could be read such as photos etc)
This way, ps3 owners would only have to back up data protected content such as game saves and drm stuff like singstar etc. Other stuff can be re-downloaded from the store if buying a new ps3. Hope this is read by Sony as this issue has really frustrated me over the last seven days and I now face a ps3less x-mas!!!!!!

hi james thorpe, sorry not going to ask if i can copy protected game save data, but wether or not there are any plans to add any new music background visuals, the earth one is absolutely amazing, the other two not so, but it would still be great to have a new one though.
also i enjoy the “life with playstation” app will there be any new channels in the future?
thanks and merry christmas

The data transfer option is pretty redundant. it does not do anything an External HDD can’t. In the case of replacing a broken PS3, any protected data backed up should be recoverable to a new PS3 and re-registered once logged into the network, in a similar fashion to Xbox Live.
surely there are legal issues around the availability of Music Game tracks, if they are not available for re-download, can the user receive a refund for the lost tracks? Probably an issue for the publisher more than Sony though.

Pretty useless if you can’t backup your copy protected saves in any way whatsoever. What’s the use in using the backup utility to back them up to the same PS3?
I don’t back up my PC, delete all the data and then put the data back from my backups, that’s just stupid. I back it up in case of emergency and that I need to back up onto a new one. Same with PS3. The inability to backup copy protected save files is ridiculous and shouldn’t exist in the first place.
Capcom undid copy protected saves when lots of people complained, and rightly so. Sony shouldn’t allow copy protecting of save files. So some saves get passed around, who is it hurting? Nobody? Thought as much.

Posted on 9 December, 2009 at 12:49 am by Bloody_Marcel
James Thorpe is wrong about copy protected saves.
It’s true they can’t be copied. But they can be MOVED (as in, they are copied on the new system and deleted from the previous one) via the new back up functionality.

not being able to backup ur hard earned “copy protected” gave saves and old downloads not available anymore in the psn store, makes this LAN “data transfer” really a “partial data” xfer and useless. Its ur PS3 and u should control where and what u do with any data. until then, this just eliminated the HDD for a back up!!!! what if i buy 3 more PS3′s and i want all of them to be able to have the exact same downloads, games saves etc? ill tell u what, ill stick with 1 ps3! and HOPE I DONT get the yellow ring of death again! Dont get me wrong, i love Sony and the PS3, but this has to be corrected if Sony cares about its core consumer.
