Hi Guys
The next system software update for PS3 will be available very soon. Update 3.15 is an optional update and has two key features which are explained below –
‘minis’ come to PS3:
We launched minis for PSP back in October but from the 17th December you will be able to enjoy these bite size games on your PS3 as well as your PSP. This firmware update allows the minis emulator to work on PS3 and we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December.
Check out great titles like ‘Blast off’ (8.5/10 – IGN), ‘Fieldrunners’, “a wonderfully crafted casual nugget” (8/10 – Eurogamer) or ‘Kahoots’, “a must-buy” (8/10 – Videogamer).
If you buy a minis game from the 17th it will work on both platforms so if you have a PS3 and a PSP you will only need to buy it once and it will be available to download to your PS3 and your PSP.
If you have already bought a mini for PSP and want to get it on your PS3 as well, just go to your download list in the Store and download it again for free. The game will then work on your PS3 as well.
PS3 Data Transfer:
This feature enables you to transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.
Look forward to your comments and will reply to as many questions as I can.
Thanks
James

We all know there’s a premium PSN service coming, here’s one thing due to the copy protected saves I would pay for:
ONLINE STORAGE OF ALL SAVED DATA WITH ACCESS VIA PSN ID ONLY.
Just throwing that out there.

THANK YOU! I just upgraded *cough* downgraded *cough* to a slim. So this will make the process a lot quicker for me

@201 yea I would pay for online storage. Even tho the download quota would kill me. I have lost my saves way to much due to dead ps3s.

I am sorry, but the Idea of loosing Savegames and Contend that i have payed for dos not sound like a “next gen” concept to me. – I can still play my old game cardriges today and i would like my PS3 games and DLC contends to do just as good in the far future.
DRM *****!

another top on my wishlist, is a function that copies every savedata (which is not protected) with a push of a button! something like: “save all to ‘usb’?” … will we get this – someday?

This back up feature isnt really all that helpful unless you have TWO PS3s at the same time.
What we really need is a way to back up our files to a new HD if you upgrade from a smaller drive to a larger one. If I’m going from a 120gb drive to a 320gb drive there’s no way to perform this. it potentially forces you to re download possibly a 100gbs of data from the PSN store. THIS what they need to create a feature for.
Or better yet a way for anyone that has a system die on them and needs to rescue their data from the harddrive because when they fix or refurbish your system it wont recognize your old data. WHen My PS3 Yellow lighted It wouldnt start up again and All my data on the hard drive was lost even though I’d done a back up. I had to spend a week re-downloading all my games, installs and DLC because there was no way to use the data on the drive I already had after I sent in my PS3 to be fixed/refurbished.
PLEASE ADDRESS THIS.

WHAT THE HELL!?
AS SOON AS SOMEONE ASKS ABOUT THE BLUETOOTH CONTROLLER SYNC ISSUE ON THE PS3 SLIM with the 3.10 update, James Thorpe CLAMS UP AND IGNORES THE QUESTION!!
This is BS- Why does SONY ignore serious problems and give us ”new features” that most people couldn’t care less about? How about answering people with real issues and not just people that praise you for all the new stuff?

+1 Help out those with YLOD sony should offer to transfer all your data to the repaired/referbed system for an added fee or included with the 150 they already charge you I know id pay for it rather then loosing all my game saves which i did when my 60 gig YLOD twice in the past 6 months stop hurting the early adopters and help us out sony

so will this fix the sync issues im having since the 3.10 update?
i rang customer support and as usual they just acted dumb and pretended its not happening.
i did not pay 100 bucks for a wired controller, if i wanted that i could of bought a $10 PS2 adapter and used that.
ive got a good mind to go back to EB and demand my money back since im not getting what i paid for.

@James
you always answer “No, copy protected save data can not be transfered due to publisher’s requirements”.
I doubt the requirement is to stick the save to one dedicated PS3 but I assume that the requirement is to protect it from manipulation?
The way it is right now may fit the requirement of the publisher (which I doubt, see above) but it does NOT fit the requirement of me as a gamer, namely to play my current game states on any PS3 I choose.
Sony should seriously rethink their design, as there are solutions where you can have both requirements.
Pleas elaborate.

Great update. I assume this is emulating the PSP in someway… makes me wonder if emulating the regular PSP Games is something Sony is considering.
We know the PSP Hardware sells really well, but the software not so well, for reasons i won’t mention here. But we don’t know if that would change, wonder if sony would be willing to take that risk to allow PS3 owners to buy the PSP games and play them on their console?

Hi James great update for starters, I was wondering why do you even allow the developers to copy protect their saves in such a way that when your PS3 fails (I’ve had this) and you want to backup all your data, it just refuses because of this protection on the saves?
I lost my Killzone 2 save, which was right at the moment that the end boss comes from behind his protected area, due to this mechanic.
I can’t describe the amount of frustration that lead me to not even start up this game ever since.
All the accomplishments and positives of the single player campaign were for nothing because I painfully couldn’t back up the save and after sending in my machine (for the second time!) I got another refurbished PS3 back, which meant formatting the HD that I used in my previous unit and loosing that save game.
Please remove the copy protection, or find a better backup scenario… like zip the whole shebang to an encrypted file that can be decrypted by another PS3 for restore.

Does this also give the possibility for copying all (not protected) save games to external HDD / usb-stick in one click instead of selecting all save games one by one?

Will you be adding support for example for 127kbps mp3 audio? At the moment PS3 can only play 96, 128, 256 etc bps mp3 audio.

That’s a fine updates mini’s are soooooooooo cool will there be any sort of related trophy system for minis?
223
Posted on 9 December, 2009 at 8:46 am by FluBBa
Yeah add support for savegame encryption in the FW/Devkit so the developers doesn’t have to invent that for every game and we gamers can backup all our saves (so that we can buy a new PS3 and transfer our saves when our old PS3s break down).
Also, you’ve got to be kidding about bought Singstar songs no longer being available for download!!?! When I payed for my songs it clearly said _BUY_, not play/rent/lease/licence etc…
Now that we can play Minis on the PSP emulator, how long till we can play all PSP games on it? And when can we expect to play PS2 games on the PS2 emulator?

Hello James,
this new update is nice and all but i still can’t sync my trophys.
So it would be nice if Sony listens to their costumers because i have this trophy problem for over 2 months now!!
I’m a big Playstation fan and never want anything else but i have to say (with pain in my heart!) that Xbox achievements are way better and faster when you sync them.
So 3.15 will fix this problem right?
Thanks in advance,
Tom

What’s the point if copy-protected save files are not included in the transfer. It’s this that keeps me from buying a 250 GB PS3. If the files on the original PS3 are deleted, why aren’t these protected saves copied? The rest we can already backup to an external HDD or flash drive.

Posted on 9 December, 2009 at 9:37 am by CoolTails
If someone could explain how this is at all useful or better than than the backup option thats already there, then i’d appreciate it,cos i can’t find any logic or sense in this as an update at all.
Also what is the point of psp minis by remote play, isn’t the psp go,with its 16GB and normal psp’s meant to do this standalone anyway??
Unless theres some background stuff going on that is building on this foreground stuff is just ,well, useless to most people.

Out of interest, if one happens to have 2x PS3s and they are on the same Home network, will this feature allow the two PS3s to transfer data between them that way, or do you have to do a direct LAN-to-LAN hook-up?
And if not, could that be added? For example, if I have various files/music/video/games etc. on my downstairs PS3, could I access or transfer it to an upstairs PS3?
Don’t want to sound greedy, but it’s just a thought…

WAIT A MINUTE! James please can you clarify your earlier replies – what do you mean it can’t transfer copy-protected data? [DELETED] is the point of the utility if it does nothing more than the old backup/restore option?!
I just want to MOVE my content from an old PS3 to a new PS3 – I don’t want to COPY anything, so I don’t see why COPY-protection should be an issue!!! It makes no sense – this process should simply populate the new HDD and delete it off the old HDD – what is the harm in that? Even if it was a separate option that populates the new PS3 with content/settings that are identical to the source PS3 and then completely formats and resets to factory defaults the source PS3 – same user, one set of content, just a different PS3 – no harm, no foul.
I want to give Sony my money to buy a new Slim, I really do, but I am NOT prepared to lose the games, content, downloads and saves I’ve amassed over the last 2.5 years. All I want to do is MIGRATE my data – this really shouldn’t be an issue with anyone – no copying involved, just a simple move of data.
Until Sony allows this I will be sticking with my Fat PS3!

Copy-protected game saves or profiles on my PS3:
Brain Challenge, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Crash Commando, Dynasty Warriors Empires, High Velocity Bowling, Killzone, Locoroco Cocorecho, Lord of the Rings Conquest, Namco Museum Essentials, Red Faction Guerilla, Smackdown vs Raw 2010, Tomb Raider Underworld, Wheelman

They are good ideas but what are the chances of a person having their old and new PS3 at the same time? Ususally people trade in their old in exchange for new.
The transfer option seems a little superfluous seeing as it does what can be already done with an external hard drive and a USB cable.
This whole method with PS3 A to a TV and then PS3 B to a TV seems a little long-winded with something you can do with the ‘copy’ function in the ‘Game Save Data’ folder.
Any right-minded person with a PS3, PC or any other console should already have an external HD with their precious game data backed up on it, I know I do.
And if you can’t transfer over copy-protected data, then whats the point? I worked really hard on Resident Evil 5 and I still have a few trophies left to get, and it can’t be transfered.
Anyway, the Minis idea is a good one, I like how the gap between PSP and PS3 is being bridged by such ideas.

“Specifically – you should be able to save your user’s save-files and replays quickly to a thumb-drive.”
unfortunately, we will probably never get such a feature, sony is only interested in giving us useless features that are a waste of space to install. this is the number one feature that would be actually USEFUL for the ps3 users it’s tedious having to backup each save file one by one especially if you have around 50 games like i do, it becomes very tedious, that ethernet thing is exactly the same as the backup data utility it’s completely useless, i bet you cannot transfer game data and game updates to the new ps3. something the backup utility fails to do.

oh and people stop supporting developers who lock their gamesaves on your console, just do not buy their games! i know i will not, i already lost street fighter 4 data and resident evil 5 data because of copy protection!

Aaah another great update! But the thing I miss most is a application to check my free disk space. A sort of summary of the things that use my disk space on the PS3. So James are you guy’s currently working on something like this? I would really appreciate an answer!

Games run like a charm funny enough.
But, yea this 2 new feats sound good to me.

I wanna backup protected saves…
I hope the PS3 get’s a Hacked custom fw soon that let’s us do this.
(I’ll be happy to test it).
Could not care less about anything else.. Full backup should have been there from the begining what a joke! Probably over 60% of PS3 owners have lost saves due to copy prot.
1-2 trophys from plat. and you get a YLOD then you have to start the game over again!! Or power out while saving, save failed and you have to start the game from scratch…

Can’t you already do this with the existing backup/restore utility? Loads of people have upgraded their hard drive and providing it’s performed on the same PS3 there’s no issues accessing copyright saves etc.
Agree that this update for transferring between PS3′s is relatively useless tough. I don’t understand why if I move my hard drive to another PS3 I loose all the copy-protected stuff.

Awesome and better late then never if anything. I like the idea of the minis on the PS3 now the next time i buy myself a £20 game card i’ll download one of these. I haven’t said it before so i’ll say it now thanks SCEE for bringing us the PSN cards,
I’ve spent £40 so far on them as their better then the microsoft points or the nintendo points, i like how while nintendo and microsoft hide behind points that sony come right out and tell us how much money the Downloadable Content cost, it comes across as proof as the companies honesty and is something that’s always convinced me to buy the PSN cards over the other two.
The reason i bring this up now is becasue i’m been complaining a lot and i know i don’t mention when the SCEE get things right so it’s only fair that i do. This update is awesome (TBH i wouldn’t use cross game chat anyway as none of my friends have a PS3).

Why exactly does any game, bloody any game have copy protection? Geez! All it does is hinder our ability to backup our precious gamesaves properly. I personally am not interested in downloading other people’s gamesaves to unlock and cheat on trophies, but there is a solution to that… rather than affect everyone, Sony should be coming up with solutions that only affect those who cheat trophies (like how about a search system that seeks out when a player’s profile has several trophies unlocked at the same time/date stamp, indicating they’ve cheated their trophies, and send them a PSN message asking them to explain).
Just when i think an answer to my problem (forgive me for wanting to actually BUY another PS3! I wanna get a Slim, and move my phat to my bedroom, but wanna transfer EVERYTHING over to the slim.. and Sony is limiting me from doing that, even after this 3.15 update comes out) For godsakes, please atleast convince Guerilla to patch their game so gamesaves are free from this bullsh#t that is copy protection. Same goes for the music games etc.

Ohh and does the transfer feature atleast work over a standard network hookup? Or does the PS3s HAVE to be hooked up directly? I’ve got both my PS3s hooked up to the same modem/router, and will upgrade the link to a gigabit switch eventually. It would be awesome if there was any network features between PS3s on the same network.. things like streaming off the others hard drive for things like movies, music and PlayTV recordings.
