Hi Guys
The next system software update for PS3 will be available very soon. Update 3.15 is an optional update and has two key features which are explained below –
‘minis’ come to PS3:
We launched minis for PSP back in October but from the 17th December you will be able to enjoy these bite size games on your PS3 as well as your PSP. This firmware update allows the minis emulator to work on PS3 and we are working on getting the majority of the current minis ready for the PS3 from the 17th December.
Check out great titles like ‘Blast off’ (8.5/10 – IGN), ‘Fieldrunners’, “a wonderfully crafted casual nugget” (8/10 – Eurogamer) or ‘Kahoots’, “a must-buy” (8/10 – Videogamer).
If you buy a minis game from the 17th it will work on both platforms so if you have a PS3 and a PSP you will only need to buy it once and it will be available to download to your PS3 and your PSP.
If you have already bought a mini for PSP and want to get it on your PS3 as well, just go to your download list in the Store and download it again for free. The game will then work on your PS3 as well.
PS3 Data Transfer:
This feature enables you to transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.
Look forward to your comments and will reply to as many questions as I can.
Thanks
James

@ Bloody_Marcel Maybe this solution for upgrading the HDD works:
1. Make backup.
2. Install new HDD
3. Begin restore operation.
4. Hit circle to cancel restore at 98% (99% if you’re brave enough).
5. Follow on screen instructions to rebuild Database. (SUPER EASY).
6. Reboot and deleat the “corrupted data” in the GAMES menu on the XMB.

Guys, James was right – “protected saves can not be copied from one PS3 to another”, but it can be moved – protected save will remain only on one of the consoles, old or new.

Even though it now looks like copy protected saves can be copied (moved!) via this new utility it still doesn’t cater for the most common scenario – i.e. where people dilligently backup their data to external storage and want to restore it on a different/new PS3. Ok they can do it but copyrighted stuff is lost in the process. I still can’t see how useful the current implementation is – how many people are going to have two working PS3s?!?

Thanks James. A lot of us would like the suggestion of being able to move locked save games on-the-fly and/or via the backup utility to move to a new PS3.
For example if one’s PS3 is no longer usable. If it gets replaced via Sony, a backup will not restore the locked saves to a new PS3.
Now for publisher requirements, I think Sony and ALL publishers (including Guerilla games) needs to look at LittleBigPlanet as an example. All the DLC content is downloaded and saved via game data. The save game file is not locked and can be moved between other PS3s. So if the DLC doesn’t exist on the other console, it’ll just load like there was no DLC present.
Also Capcom has learned about locked saves because of massive comments from users at capcom-unity.com, they made a patch to remove the lock from the save game for Resident Evil 5.
Honestly, Sony needs to either remove this lock completely or re-evaluate how its being used because there are developers that are blatantly abusing this feature whether intentional or not.
Thanks for reading!

Are Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies compatible yet? as i tried both and they are both telling me they need to be copied onto a psp and not loading on my ps3.

My Fat Ps3 just died on me… it´s blu-ray drive stop reading Blu-rays disc…
I was playing Dragon age and my save game had something around 28 hours of game play.
Yesterday I bought myself a Ps3 Slim, hoping the backup utility would help me out….but nope… My dragon age Save game wouldn´t be restored to my new system…
LOST 28 hours of gameplay…
Why can´t the save be transfered and validated with my psn account, assuring the publishers that the copyrighted content is not been transfered over accounts?
But to the same account on another system?
I can imagine another ways to make this data transfer possible…but WHY MUST MY SAVES be LOST? Because of trophies? If yes, why not Bound the first use of them in another system into a validation of the psn account that “owns” the save?

Please add voice chatt so me and game buddies can chatt even before we start a game please. And a voice chattroom would be awesome.
btw.
I have noticed that trophies wont sync with servers for over a 2 weeks now. Is there anything wrong with sony servers? I do know that sony is getting alot of new users but this is not the fault i hope.
308
Posted on 10 December, 2009 at 2:03 pm by technole
@FlowStudio
Its not the trophies. Because they are locked to the PSN ID that it was created upon. This information is actually in all save data locked or not in the PARAM file. So one can’t just take a save data from one PS3 or the internet from another ID with 99% completed and expect to unlock trophies on their own account.
As for Dragon Age, I have a feeling it is based on my comment above. Some developers are abusing this feature for multi-path games. Since Dragon Age requires several playthroughs for the platinum, the lock could be used to prevent a backup by a user far in the game, then restore and take the other path. This is a poor excuse to use the feature. A way around this? Buy the PC version so you can back it up. So for Sony, this is a potential lost sale.
Killzone 2 save game lock is probably because of lack of attention or understanding of how locked saves work. The multiplayer data is saved on Guerilla’s servers.
Guerilla is the only Sony studio that is locking their save. You’d think they would learn a thing or two from Media Molecule and Naughty Dog about how saves should work.

@ RomanB No he wasn’t since at post 32, James wrote: Sorry but you won’t be able to transfer some game saves as they are protected by the publishers

I’ve installed 3.15 now.
I re-downloaded all my Minis but only one (BreakQuest) is working. Tetris and Pinball Fantasies don’t work.

Be careful with this upgrade, it’s turned my PS3 into a brick, I can’t get past the update screen now….

Hmmm Love the minis idea but Data Transfer whats that all about. I can already do that with my External anyway and glad to see you think we all got enough money to spend on a second PS3 seeing as there sold a such a blatent ripoff price COUGH!!!. How about something usefull like a bit more support for online media im so sick of “THIS APPLICATION IS NOT SUPPORTED” Drives me mad i mean even this site dont support PS3 properly i had to use me PC Unbelievable. Also would’nt hurt for you lot to be a little more Generous on the Playstation Store how about the odd free ps1 or ps2 classic now and again and maybe some new dynamic themes ?

A clarification post about protected-save transfer and mini on ps3 would be welcomed as poeples (including myself) seem confused.

@ technole
I undestand that…
In dragon age preventing u to save game because of the multipath is a poor excuse from the publisher since we can make multiple save in multiple places…reload them and achieve another twist in the story (and another trophy)…
This are the times that clouding saves would be nice…for backuping (only)

I just wanted to say that I love the updates that Sony has been putting out on the PS3. And that data transfer ability will come in so handy, especially since you only need a regular network cable to transfer the data.
Now that the PS3 can run PSP Minis, add functionality so that we can also run PS2 and maybe even full PSP games from the PS3. That added functionality will make the system sell like hotcakes. Look into that down the road please.

Useless update
1. Let multiple PS3′s share info over a LAN…. I would buy more consoles if I could access playtv etc over the network.
2. Make the HD swap straight forward as the current way is U/S
3. Make it absolutely easy to access anything that you have paid for. I’m never paying for downloadable anything online again. Buy the disk atleast you know where it is.
4. YLOD…. can we have a nice blue light to complain about.

Yeah, that Ps3 data transfer system would have been awesome back when I did buy a new Ps3.
If Sony made games like Kz2 let people transfer saved games on flash-drives like everyone else then I wouldn’t be fussing.
Nice job releasing the cross-game-chat!

Not sure if this was asked already cause I’m not going through 7 pages of posts, but DOES THIS UPDATE FIX THE BLU-RAY DRIVE PROBLEM FROM 3.1? I.E> CLicking, Drake’s Fortune Freeze, Trophy Synch problems.

Posted on 11 December, 2009 at 4:00 am by Mesmer1zed
This is sp pointless. Why go out and buy a LAN cable when you can just copy everything you want onto a simple usb device? You can copy game saved data, videos, music, photos, etc. Just not game data cause its software and not able to be transfered. [DELETED]. Way to go and be [DELETED]. what we really need is XMB voice chat. We have twitter and myspace and facebook n the browser.

I would be excited about the new features – but the update broke my Blu Ray drive. Great. Here’s hoping that Sony can fix this issue with another udpate ASAP.

“Look forward to your comments and will reply to as many questions as I can.”
“328 Comments 14 Replies” Ahahahaha….. Ahhahahaha….
14 replies on 328 posts is the best you can do? (even if it is only 1/4 with questions it is still only 14 out of 84).
I’m sorry Sony but you are making a joke out of yourselfs. Why is it that Sony never gives decent replies? The same happens when you mail to support or any other blog post around here. Do you guys even care about your customers? It is really dissapointing Sony…

@Vorlon, thanks for the link. just got a new slim today and want to transfer my dlc.
Just a quick question if anyone could answer it. When i do a transfer, does it transfer my accounts over too? Or do i have to create existing accounts on my new console and then do a data transfer?
Thanks in advance.
333
Posted on 11 December, 2009 at 2:43 pm by Vorlon
@ Lum26 – I think and hope all accounts are transferred. Just follow all instructions to the letter. I’m working up the courage to do it myself one of these days. (I already bought the 250 GB PS3)

Thanks for that mate. I’ll do it later today and let you know how it went. I just got the 250 gig version too. Its still sat in the box because i wasn’t sure about the account transfer.

the use case of the copy functionality is useful for ONE scenario. I wonder who designs this stuff at Sony … this is totally ridiculous and just cr4p

Posted on 11 December, 2009 at 7:46 pm by Vorlon
@ Cuthred – This update (if flawless) is great. It’s just what many people were waiting for to upgrade to a slim PS3 with a big hard drive. I was not very happy to have to delete game data every time I bought a new game. Minis on PS3 are a nice bonus.

Posted on 11 December, 2009 at 8:47 pm by Cuthred
@Vorlon
as I said, it is covering one scenario: upgrading to a different PS3.
What it does not cover:
- move your data if you use different PS3s (either at home, or transfering to a buddy you visit and want to play with over the weekend)
- if the PS3 dies and you made a backup, you will not be able to restore your protected saves to your new PS3 (different HW, correct me if I am wrong)
So while I am suprised that they may actually provide at least finally something, it is again half hearted and not really well thought through.

I’ve just done a data transfer from my 60 gig to my new 250 gig console and it worked a treat. It copied everything, even the browser bookmarks.
After doing the data transfer i checked my old ps3 and all of my families accounts were still there. All i had to do was sign back in and re activate them, so you don’t lose anything at all from the console that you do the data transfer from. It took about 2 hours to do the transfer and at times i wondered if it was doing anything at all because it stayed on 43% for about 30 minutes, but i left it to run its course. I was worried about losing everything by doing the transfer but i was suprised to see everthing on my old ps3 intact.
My dynamic themes got corrupted doing the transfer but all i had to do was re download them. Nice update Sony
