Hi, my name is Robert Karp and I am here to give you latest news on Hustle Kings.
Over the last year VooFoo studios and Sony have been combining their skills with some good old fashioned elbow grease to help make Hustle Kings the best. We have been packing in as many features as possible, whilst at the same time adding so much polish that you can almost see your own face! Check out these balls if don’t believe me.
There has been a lot of discussion internally about how we can do something a little different with the trophy system and we finally decided to make one of the silver trophies a little bit different from the rest… This trophy can only be unlocked by playing online and beating someone else who already has it – Sounds simply enough? Now the best part is that the developers are the only ones who will start with it and that means the only way to get it is by beating them at their own game!
Now to bit that I hope you’ve all been waiting for… (Drum roll please)
Release date: 22nd of December 2009 (That’s today!)
Price: £6.29 (€7.99)
If you’re a fan of turning your skills into (virtual) cash, then Hustle Kings is for you. With graphics, a physics engine, a whole host of offline game modes including (but not limited to) career, trick shots, local tournaments, as well as an online hustle mode and topped off with an intuitive control method. Sometimes when I’m at the pub playing pool, I think to myself… “I wish I could be playing Hustle Kings right now!”
We have tried to take advantage of everything the PS3 has to offer, so we’ve included XMB music (although I’d questions anyone’s taste who doesn’t like the eclectic mix we have on offer), uploading videos to you tube (to show off your greatest jump and swerve shots) and much more. Are your ready for the total pool experience?
Hustle Kings will be available exclusively on the PlayStation Store, so if you haven’t already signed up to for a PSN ID, you’d better do so now!

I suppose I could do that. I do have a UK account already.
Wish there was a way just to buy a card from Sony in the US that could be used elsewhere.
Does not seem like the Sony wants people to be able to do this.
IMO, a sale is a sale. But then, it takes away sales from SCEA or vice versa. Certainly one of the issues they don’t want I would guess.
Look forward to more impressions at least. Keep ‘em coming.

the lighting on the balls etc. looks really impressive on this. i find pool/snooker games can be very hit or miss – the world championship snooker was awful for example, but the videos for this look good, and the price is fairly reasonable, so i may just pick it up over the next couple of days.

Been playing the game pretty much non-stop for the last four hours, I’m very impressed with it. I don’t seem to be able to buy chalk though, the store window pops up but no items are displayed.
Two minor things: The “chalk cue” sound effect is VERY loud, it would be nice if that could be turned down by about 50% in a future update. It would also be good if the camera was free roaming in replays, or least allow that option in the settings somewhere, some good shots tend to be missed because the camera is too far away etc at the moment.
Overall, a fantastic game and I will be recommending it to friends and family.

Hi SiRobertson,
Thanks for your feedback and glad you like it. There is an issue with the chalk at the minute which should be resolved first thing in the morning.
If you save your replay, you move the camera as you see fit. I will speak with the team about decreasing the sfx for the chalk.
Thanks,
Robert

Another suggestion for a near perfect game, how about being able to use your PSN-avatar as your ingame avatar? That would offer a much more personalized experience when playing online etc.

will hustle kings be gaining support from PS home much like gravity crash is at the moment. if i could get me a hustle kings neon bar apartment with the ability to play freeze ball with invited friends then launch into the full game. also be able to stream recorded vids into the space and customizable frames for screenshot would be fricking awesome. you know you guys and Sony would have an instant win.

I got the game it’s well good.
Apart from that it’s worth every penny
It’s just the ‘fine-tuning’ seems to be to be a bit to fast tho

I read at another forum that you can use the D-pad to “fine” aim. They said it worked better in their opinion?
Don’t have it myself (US here).

Picked it up and it’s fantastic! Loving the game. The visuals, the sounds (great mix of music!), the physics, just brilliant!
Snooker DLC would be very welcome.

If you press hard on the ‘Circle’ button ‘fine-tuning’ is better(i.e Slower)
1 thing im not to keen on is shaking the DS3 pad all the time to ‘Chalk’ the Cue? Saying that i have been playing it non-stop for hours! ;D

It seems the AI is still somewhat “unhumanlike”, aka either doing insanely perfect shots that are just impossible to calculate by humans, or it’s just giving you a chance at random by not even trying. (It always seems hard to dumb the AI down enough to seem humanlike in these types of games). But like this the hard cpu opponents kinda force you to play without any mistakes, which isn’t great in career mode where you have to pay millions everytime to start a game (which you’ll lose). I’d be okay with that if the AI was doing real-world human-calculable shot.
The online multiplayer is where this game shines though, it’s a lot of fun and I’d totally forget about career mode if that didn’t unlock other stuff.
Bytheway, besides using circle to slow down the aim, using the d-pad instead of the analog stick helps a lot for finetuning as well. And the analog control method is way easier than the skill meter, especially with the difficult shots.

Is there another way to chalk your cuetip ?
My hands are gettin tired.
Also what are the prices for the chalk ?
And why in gods name ask extra money for it.

Only $12.95 (Australian dollars)..
Purchased, thank you very much

lol@64, maybe you’re using it too much. But yeah, better just be HKcredits only for those special chalks…
I like playing with the camera in the replays, but why doesn’t it use my camera position when uploading to youtube? Please add the ability to use a fixed custom camera position? The automated move the camera does makes any cool swerve shots harder to notice, and a there are many better fixed camera positions that would make a better clip, like getting really close to the action or low on the table with jump shots etc.
I’ve also noticed some replays get messed up, I’ve got one that kicks the cue ball off the table rapidly on every turn (and no that didn’t happen on that match).

Well done Hustle Kings developers!!!
IMHO, you have just taken Wipeout HD’s top spot on the PSN store. Best value, Best Looking and Best function supported title available.
It’s a steal a £6.29.
Everyone buy it now!!!!

My self and friends have had quite a few ‘freezes’ over the course of the evening last night. I say ‘freezes’ as the game froze and we were unable to do anything, even though the XMB was still able to be pulled up and also the ingame menu ‘start’ button. Are you guys aware of this?
I have to say also that ‘fine tune’ needs fine tuning, i was pressing the button into the controller as hard as i could last night and it was still waaayyy to twitchy.
I understand video chat has been left out at the moment due to issues but why no voice chat in the mean time? or is it available and i haven’t found it? Text chat option in game would have been a good addition (text entry each time other person is taking their shot).
Apart from those gripes I love the game, well done, now get these niggles sorted and get video chat working pronto!

Really enjoying the game so far but I have a few criticisms if I may…
1) Is there really no voice chat online? Its hard to believe that its nearly 2010 and we still get multiplayer games without voice chat.
2) The computer a.i. is horrible at times in career mode. There have been a few times where the cpu has deliberately hit the cue ball nowhere near another ball resulting in a foul.
3) Most people know how to play 8 ball, but how many people know how to play cut throat, etc? I only found out the rules after hunting and entering exhibition mode and seeing a brief explanation there. It would be nice if the rules of the type of game you were playing were on the loading screen before the game.
4) The trophies!! Win 100 matches online?! Win 1 million credits online?! I don’t mind working hard for some trophies but wow!
5) Fine tune isn’t precise enough. I had no idea that it was pressure sensitive for fine tune until reading about it elsewhere but the rotation doesn’t feel slow enough.
It probably sounds like I’m having a major moan about the game, but I’m really enjoying it. I just wanted to give some feedback
Merry Christmas to the team at XDev.

Hello Robert,
Great game!! And thanks to VooFoo, I got a silver trophy! :’)
Anyway, after playing 4 hours online yesterday (haven’t touch the career yet) I can say it’s the best looking pool game around, and physics is pretty damn good too, the nice touch of slow ball rolling is near perfect when many other pool games can’t seem to get it right. Anyway, I like to get this chance to mention a few things that should be fix, because it’s just unnatural on a real table.
1. The first positional breaking into the (UK black) pack will always generate a pattern of 3 yellows and 3 reds near the end of the cushion, almost the same pattern every time, all my breaks will end with the same pattern of balls near the back cushion, and I always pot either the same red or yellow, or both balls, off the break. the physics is top-notch, but the breaking is definitely not right.
71
Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 10:41 am by yuukun_uk
2. When you apply a lot of power for a short distant shot, it’s 90% the ball would bounce out from the pocket when the ball is millimetres away from the pocket edge. In a real pool game, the chances of a ball jumping back out is very rare, unless it a very hard shot, or a kick, or the target ball hit the pocket side with a small kick. Either way it’s very hard. Although in Hustle Kings, it’s almost guarantee you could do this every time. Which is very annoying when you try to apply alot of screw back with power (not full strength) and seeing your ball bounce out.
Haven’t said that, Hustle Kings is by far the best pool game on any consoles, the online works like a charm, graphics on the table and balls is beautiful, and physics is fantastic. But those two problems I mentioned is troublesome because it can directly affect each game.
I will continue playing it, because it’s too good and loving it. Just need a bit of finessing. Either way, thank you VooFoo (even if you don’t fix it). :’)
.yuukun_uk
P.S. The second problem I will look deeper into it, it could be more to do with cue control, although the pocket does give too much impression there is a spring inside the pockets. ;o)
72
Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 10:48 am by yuukun_uk
P.S.S. On the 2nd question, Unless I need to buy those special chalk to stop kicks/jumps when potting close shots with powerful screw back?
Either way people, these are my nip-pick, hope I didn’t put anyone off from buying it, because it’s the best pool game around.

I just had to comment this game. AWESOME thx for releasing such quality pool game. I have waited years and iam not kidding for a pool game that holds this standard.
Merry Christmas to the whole team you have saved my christmas because whole family wife and kids and me included are having a blast with your game. Thx.
PS. I agree that calk sound is a bit high and the fine tuning is a bit fast or to sensitive. Fine tuning should be slower but in overall one awesome game.

Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 11:30 am by yuukun_uk
Hey Robert,
I found an example how this pattern generate on every break. Take notice on the 3 yellows and 2 reds at the end cushion, centre.
The first 20 secs shows two breaks, both break have the same pattern.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch0k9bUKeus
I watched quite a few breaks on youtube, and this pattern seems to happen on UK 8 Ball (only).
Also I like to mention about those who wanted Snooker, this is Hustle Kings! The name indicate purely as a pool game. Snooker should be another stand alone game, thats my opinion anyway.

Oh and I agree the chalk sound is a little too loud, especially when the other person online insists using it 5 times in a row on the same shot.

Hi again.
Had quite a few games now, thanks for the tip about the fine tuning, the game certainly didn’t make it clear that pressing Circle more firmly had more of an effect (unless I missed it!) but the aiming is perfect now.
It’s a fantastic game, wouldn’t have looked out of place as a full title on ps2 with the amout of features etc.
One thing I’m quite dissapointed about though, is the lack of a free mode. I fancy just smacking some balls about and trying wacky shots but there is no option for a practice or free play mode. Playing ‘continuous’ should be available to play on your own.
I REALLY hope this is added in the future. For a game to be based a lot on funky shots I’m really suprised this isn’t in. We need a mode to play without rules or the CPU.
Cheers. (I’ll definately be buying the snooker DLC!!!)

Bought it last night and had some games in career and online. Enjoyed muchly. No problems with it whatsoever. Think I finally found me a game I can play when I’m just a bit too tired for action stuff like Uncharted 2 (ok maybe it’s all the games of Uncharted 2 that are tiring me out but still). It’s nice to have a game I can play while just laying on the couch relaxing and this fits the bill perfectly. Lovely looking too, and lots of features for a relatively low price.
Very happy with purchase.

Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 12:38 pm by Leicesterfan
Oh, and the ‘free-play’ mode could allow us to select all the balls and move them in order to create our own trick shots etc.
These ball layouts could be saved with instructions and then posted as challenges for other players to complete.
I may be going a little overboard here but I’m not sure how much support you will be offering. IE some games are made and left on the shelf, others like PAIN have been updated almost every week since release.
I probably sound like I’m moaning, but honestly this is the best PSN game, and I have 29 of them!!! A free play mode would be the icing on an already very tasty christmas cake.

The game looks great and is really fun to play. Definitely worth the money even though i’ve got a few negative comments on it.
It’s by far the best pool game out on any platform at the moment.
I’ve two gripes as a serious american pool player, the AI plays like all other pool games in the past. The AI will repeatdely pull off ridiculous shots that you would only try in exhibitions, never in a match (particularly in the 9ball game)
Secondly, there are issues about the ball bouncing out of the pockets at moderate to high speed even if you sink the ball in the middle of the pocket, this shouldn’t happen on high quality tables in real life.

Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 2:29 pm by RevolutionBlues
Looks great, lots of cool features and an awesome physics model but one problem I feel: the “fine tune” option is not a great improvement on normal aiming. Took me a minute to line up one shot (really) as the line veered either side of where I wanted to go no matter how gently I tried to adjust the line or how hard I pressed ‘O’.
Tiny enough movements of the left stick to get super accurate lines are very difficult, and regretfully it’s ruining the game for me a bit. Please please please can you update with a less sensitive response to the left stick when pressing ‘O’?
Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 4:15 pm by Robert Karp
Hey, try pressing the the Circle Button quite hard but using the D-pad to get finer movements. I find this to be more accurate when trying to line up intricate shots.
82
Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 2:35 pm by RevolutionBlues
PS Can I add my name to those suggesting a “free play” mode in which one can move the balls to any position on the table, e.g. to set up trick shots. Also, some game descriptions: I have no idea how to win Cut-throat!
Right, I’m off to go hunting for THAT Silver trophy!
83
Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 2:44 pm by blesshim
Guys, the rules of cut throat are easy (when you know them!)
You are assigned a colour of balls (in the game, in real life it played with american pool balls and you get a number range)
The object is the pot everyone else’s balls, not your own!! The game ends when only one set of coloured balls remains on the table.

I had to find the rules to cut throat on wikipedia!

Hi,
I just want to say that the team and myself really appreciate everyone’s feedback and are glad that you are enjoying the game. In the new year we will be looking to address some of the issues and problems you have had so far, as well as getting more features in and perhaps some DLC, if you lot don’t have too many gripes!
Have a merry Xmas and a happy new year!

Loving the game but no voice chat really, i wouldve rethought my purchase if i had known this from the off as me and my friends like to chat during online play it adds alot to that pool like playing in pubs etc. I hope they patch this in or it wont be getting played by me and my friends half as much as it would be otherwise.

Greets from Germany. Love this Game!
1.) No Voice & Video Chat? The Description in the Germany Blog says the Game has Voice & Video Chat? Where is it? Vocie Chat would be nice.
2.) Buying Special Chalks don´t work. There is after presse Select and Buy no Chalk to choose.
3.) No Game Descriptions! I dont know how to play cut-throat
4.) Every time you start the Game and want to play Online i must accpet the EULA. Is one time not enough?
5.) The Circle Button is not accurate enough sometimes. Speed is to High.

Shouldnt have to buy chalk (with real cash) IMO …

Question: When i buy Chalk with real Cash, can i use it forever or can i use it a couple Times and have to buy a new one? It´s very annoying that Players with Cash can take an advantage.

Fantastic game, thanks! I was really looking forward to this, and I am also really looking forward to the Snooker update. I was initially worried that I’d find Pool too boring to be honest, but I’m quite liking it so far, with all the variations and the very nice award system for trick shots (great idea!).
I also tried an online game tonight, and that worked great too. However, as others have said, the lack of voice chat is a really big letdown in that department, especially with the game originally announcing even video chat.

Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 10:54 pm by niwrA
I really hope that this was just a matter of wanting to get the game out before Christmas and that we are getting the voice chat in soon. If so, then this is going to become a very popular go-to game for me and my friends to play and chat, and I may even be able to pursuade my Dad to get a PS3 just so we can have the occasional pool / snooker and chat in.
And I’m loving the in-game music, the youtube upload, the almost perfect physics, beautiful graphics, etc.).
Kind regards and congrats on an otherwise near flawless game (the other flaws I noticed have already been mentioned here too, like the chalk sound being a bit too loud – I really liked the sample used for Jimmy White Whirlwind Snooker on the Atari ST – do you know that game? Still my favorite snooker game ever, by Archer MacLean).

Man, people complaining about no chat.
How about No Hustle Kings for me as I live in the US and SCEA decides those in the US are not yet worthy to have this game?
I would be enjoying it if I had this. Chat is fluff. Its all about the core game for me but then, I am kind of different when it comes to stuff like that.
VooFoo will fix it.
Oh, and merry christmas VooFooo Studios. Looks like a wonderful game you all got. Can’t wait to play it.
Someday.

Posted on 23 December, 2009 at 11:56 pm by yuukun_uk
Come on people, give VooFoo a break! A Christmas break, then after New Year we whip them back to work. lol. ;o)
Seriously though, after reading stuff in the US PSN forum, this game would of been delayed if you wanted video Chat, it was on hold because VooFoo was fixing it and debating if it should release with or without this feature (video chat for future update in a later date), the majority voted release without the chat.
As for the speedy aiming, it’s pressure sensitive, just hold circle harder and the aiming line will move slower and accurate. It’s perfectly fine.
As for cut-throat rules, I used wiki, only takes a few minutes to read it.

@AB101
I understand your frustration as this has happened to me time after time as it is very common for SCEA release a game (or anything) in the store while we (SCEE territories) have to wait a long time for the same product.
98
Posted on 24 December, 2009 at 3:35 am by webb0001
With the aiming line could we please have a normal straight line just for aiming?
The short and long line option still tell you the trajetory the balls are going to take very accurately including bounce ect which makes it a bit too easy.
Just a straight aiming line option would be fantastic especially when you shooting across the table it can be hard to aim with no line, apart from that great game so far though it takes WAY too much money to unlock the extra balls they look so awsome I want them now!

Awesome!
I was waiting for a realistic, serious pool game on the PS3. Initially wasn’t sure whether to buy but the mention of future Snooker DLC did it for me [bought it last night].
Nice graphics, impressive physics. Coolness…
Keep up the good work!

Can you plz awnser the question about the chalk.
Do we have to buy it again when we used it 10 times?or does it only mean we can use 10 times every single game?
Little bit weird to pay 25 cent (real money) for it everytime,i dont mind to pay for it once.
Overall great game hope to a lot DLC for it.
Cheers
